Born of shadow magic. Gifted with the power to control the flame that burns within her. A master strategist. All will be tested by the mysterious Collector. As Carth travels south, wanting to solidify her growing network, word of attacks in the south leads her to a distant city with a strange past. While searching for answers and attempting to establish a presence as she has in countless other cities, she finds power that rivals her own and a challenger who might be not only more powerful than her, but an even more cunning strategist. Carth must save her friends—and the city—before the plan set in place by the Collector succeeds.
This is an excellent story. I really liked the heroine, Carthenne (Carth) Rel. She tough, powerful yet loyal and compassionate Cat the save time, while also definitely being quite a bit kick-a**, something that I tend to find in all of my favorite characters. Her shadow magic back story and ability to control flame are skis pretty darn nifty. But more than that, this book has an excellent plot to test Carth, and an excellent opponent in the “mysterious Collector” (insert ominous music here) for her to deal with. Add to that a top-notch supporting cast and strong writing. The result is a real winner to enjoy.
The author leads off with a powerful female protagonist. We come to discover that she has surrounded herself with other powerful women. As the story progresses we discover that her goal of saving people has pulled her supporting cast around her. She is an idealist who would save the world, but all is not as it seems. The more we get into the story, the more this is true as events twist and turn. The reader wonders, as do our main characters, are events causation or coincidence.
Plenty of magic is involved to make lots of action. But the reader never does get the entire story. This is a trilogy, so perhaps more will be revealed as the forces push forward.
Summary: Entertaining read, plenty of action and plenty of confusion to keep the reader guessing, but the plot moves on quite rapidly. An interesting premise, I suspect more would have been explained in the predecessor series that I have not read. The heroine is just too perfect for my taste
Plotline: One of those simple but very complex stories as we learn more but can't make much sense of what we learn
Premise: Interesting premise, it sort of works, I suspect more to learn
Writing: Simple descriptive, the reader is right their in the action
This is a good series but also has been frustrating. The first series of this same character ended without any conclusion to the story line. When I started this series I realized it’s all new people except the main character. Unless I’m missing something I don’t understand the jump in story line and the mention of the background to the new people’s connection to the main character. It feels like there should have been additional books to the previous series or beginning to this one to make sense of the mentioned stories of these people.
Lots of mystery. All our heroine, Cartheene Rel, wants to do is help the city of Keyall regain their merchant business but it seems everything and everyone is resistant to allow her to help. She uses her totally unique magical abilities of gathering shadow around her to hide and her S’al magic with power of a flame burning within her for other strengths. I am very interested with how Mr. Holmberg develops this series and plan on reading all future books he creates in this world.
This trilogy must be a spin off from something else because even half way through I was still confused. There should have been more detail explaining the storyline. Also there are numerous typos and grammatical errors. Finally much of the story is repetitive (i.e., Linsay,s inability to "play" the game as well as Carth)
As with all of Holmberg’s books I enjoyed this but this is a follow up series to the Shadow Accords and there are things missing. The last book of the Shadow Accords left some things hanging which this book does not complete. I read this as if it had nothing to do with the previous story and enjoyed it, interestingly characters, magic (which could be confusing if you haven’t read the other books) but overall good.
This book was not as interesting as the Shadow Accords series. The grammatical and typographical errors were distracting. It really needs better proofreading. If those were corrected, the book would be easier to read. I have already downloaded the other two in the series and am hopeful for better proofreading and editing in those.
It's no problem if you read this as a separate series, but if you wanna see the story from the beginning, go back a few books and start with Shadow Blessed (Shadow Accords series).
Now going to the review: If you've read the previous books, you know what to expect. It's just as fun as the previous ones, so I don't really have anything to add. You're reading, like, the 6th book or so, you already know the characters and the writing and all that.
