The gift of the padfoot cost Ripley Kent everything.
As a girl, she was chosen by the death dog. In one week, she lost everything. Her parents, her brother. Even her community of shifters shunned the power she sheltered.
She swore she’d never return to their prejudiced hatred, but when her uncle dies, Ripley is called back to Troutdale to settle his affairs. She thinks she can get in and get out unaffected, but Joe Elliott has other ideas.
He needs her, and it’s not in all the old ways her body remembers so well.
His twin brother has been bitten by a rabid wolf, and as the death glow overwhelms the town, Ripley’s padfoot gift explodes into the curse she’s always feared.
Ripley owes these people nothing after the way they’ve treated her. But that’s the thing with gifts. Sometimes they cost more to ignore. Love is only one save-of-the-day away.

The book occurs at the same time as Big Bad Djinn.
What a great read! Poor Ripley had grown up feeling an outcast in life, her town and her own family. In a town filled with shifters she was *just* a human. Her father and uncle were the town padfoot, and her big brother was being trained just in case a current padfoot passed away, it would choose him. Although Ripley too wanted to learn, she learned fast that her father would never train a mere girl as he was convinced only men would be chosen. Padfoot can see death.... Some call them devil dogs.... But they can see when death is imminent. The only person Rip had to make her feel good was Joe. The boy she loved and her best friend. All that came crashing down one day in the library when her dad had a heart attack and the padfoot chose HER and not the golden child brother. With no training she kept quiet and didn't tell anyone... Except she saw death on her mum before she was even told cancer was stealing her away too. With her spells getting more frequent, feeling like the town outsider, and not wanting to drag Joe down she did the only thing she could..... SHE RAN. Until today. With the death of her uncle she'd come back to lay him to rest and to hightail it out of town before anyone else became the wiser. Or so she thinks lol. Fate is a tricky thing indeed. Talk about a whirlwind. For someone who runs from emotional confrontation yet faces death head on daily, Rip has a heckuva battle ahead. She sees death in Joe's twin brother Brett.... Who has NEVER been nice to her a day in her life (much like their bigot mother). Does she help Joe save his identical twin, or leave him to his destiny? Can he even be saved? So much to uncover and learn.... Why was she chosen as the padfoot? Who got chosen as the second? Could she gain some equal footing on how this padfoot thing works? Always the outsider, what will it take to make Ripley take that step toward trust with Joe? So fierce in her daily life.... Yet the emotional wounds from her past keep her frozen. An amazing story of love, friendship, family, warriors and the unknown. Part of the equally brilliant WHISKEY WITCHES series by S. M. Blooding... You don't necessarily have to have read the books first to understand what's happening here.... However I HIGHLY suggest you check them out as they're some kind of awesome. Indo love how this author writes fierce women who kick butt and take names!! Here's hoping we see far more of Ripley in future books! I voluntarily wrote this honest review in exchange for a complimentary copy of this book.
Ripley was chosen to become the padfoot at a young age. She wasn’t trained because her father assumed it wouldn’t pick a girl. Ripley had to learn how to cope but it doesn’t happen until she goes back to her hometown for Jib’s funeral. While there, Tuck gets Ripley to man watch when she chooses to help Brett find a cure to get rid of his rabies, with the help of witches since he was bitten. During that time, she learned that’s she’s accepted by most everyone but Joe and Brett’s mother. Ripley eventually realizes that she’s finally where she belongs.
I enjoyed reading this book. It's ideal for mature readers (around age 17+) due to a few incidents of a slightly graphic nature that deal with intimacy. I wasn't aware this book is based off a separate series, but I was able to enjoy it as a standalone without feeling lost. I'd recommend this book for fans of shifters and paranormal romance.
As a child, Ripley's father chose not to train her to accept the Padfoot- believing that it would never choose a female - Turned out dad was wrong - To prevent herself from harming those she loved Ripley ran - Now she has been called home to attend her Uncle's pyre - to her dismay, it turns out that is not the only fire Ripley has to tend to - A lot has changed within her small town - One that is seriously divided in its beliefs -can Ripley bring them together long enough to save Joes brother or will she once again only be the harbinger of death?
This is a wonderful expansion of the Whiskey Witches! This is one of those reads where you easily get pulled in - each character leaves a definitive mark on you-you either want to hug them or knock some sense into them or possibly a little of both I look forward to more in this series I received advanced readers copy for review consideration.
Fantastic series starter. I am still not quite sure about the Shadow Sisterhood. I understand they are some sort of power group to keep the paranormal community under the radar, but that’s about it. I love that it is in the Whiskey-verse and full of people we already know. I actually had to look up what a padfoot was. I wasn’t sure how to feel about Ripley when she first arrived. She is sullen and distrustful and so not a people person. I can understand her insecurities, so it became easier to relate to her. Once into the book, she made me laugh a lot and most of it had to do with her reaction to Leslie Whiskey and the kids. I loved that the feelings between her and Joe were still there and how good it would be to have him in her life. If only she would accept it and if he would stand up to his mother. She hated Ripley and her family. Things got complicated when she and her padfoot had to take out a rabid wolf and Joe’s brother got bit. Talking to Joe about his bear was probably the best thing she could have done. It gave her ideas about her padfoot that I thought were terrific. In my opinion, she has a better handle on her gift than her ancestors because of it. By the time she got over her prejudices and talked to Leslie about saving Brett, time was getting short. I loved how Juliet took to Ripley so quickly and was impressed by her padfoot and even stood up to Joe and Brett’s mother defending Ripley. This was so exciting and funny. I LOVE Leslie Whiskey and hope she is a very big part of this new series. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
Shadow Sisterhood Bear Moon is a spin off of the Whiskey Witches series and just as fun a read. This story is filled with love, family and lots of different paranormals. Ripley Kent comes back to town for her uncle Jibs' funeral. She is picked up at the bus station by Tuck who raised her after she lost her parents. Ripley had left town after her father passed and his Padfoot (death dog) had passed to her instead of her brother. Ripley had no idea how to handle or deal with this as her father had groomed her brother to take over in case of his passing. While Ripley is on patrol her friend Joe's brother is bitten by a rabid wolf. Really enjoyed revisiting Leslie and the other Whiskeys' along with Dexx. Page-turner. Action Packed. This book leaves us eager for more. I received an advanced readers copy of this book and loved every page of it. This is my honest opinion.
I was fortunate enough to be an ARC reader for this book and write a review of it and post it to the different book sites. I happened to choose this book to read while I was waiting for the bus to go to the dentist office and got a few pages in before the bus came and I was able to get a few chapters read while I was waiting for the freezing to take effect and as soon as I got home I jumped right into reading it again until I finished it.
I was really sorry to reach the end of it as it is really well written and engrossing to read with awesome descriptions of everything. Can't wait for the next one.
Ripley never wanted to return to Troutdale but is forced home for her Uncles funeral. Her plan is simple; go home, attend the funeral and get the hell out of town. Unfortunately for her, things get complicated when she’s dragged into a situation she finds difficult to walk away from. Joe’s conflicted when he hears Ripley is back in town, as he never stopped loving her but she broke his heart when she left without telling him why. Now she’s back and he needs her to stick around; not just because he wants her, but because he needs her help to save his brother.
I should probably first confess that I haven’t actually read the Whiskey Witches (written by S.M. Blooding) even though it is waiting for me in my TBR file. The simple fact is, for me, shifters trump witches. Still, despite that, I didn’t really feel I was missing anything as far as the Whiskey’s were concerned. The world is well constructed but I can’t tell you if that’s in part thanks to S.M. Blooding, what I can tell you is that Bear Moon is very well written. The characters enjoy a rich history that we get to unravel as the story plays out. The difference between a shifter and a padfoot is an intriguing one and I think anyone who loves shifter stories will enjoy the nuances. As for our protagonists, Ripley is your typical damaged female with a good heart and Joe is a sweet, heartbroken guy who’s a bit of a momma’s boy. I’m not sure who I feel more sorry? Joe who is controlled and harangued by his mother, or Ripley who is pretty much shunned by the local community of shifters not only for being human but because of her padfoot status.
My only real gripe with this book is that Ripley’s story doesn’t seem to be entirely wrapped up. There’s an issue between Ripley and her brother Brett which is left open. Since this seems to be a series with each book focusing on different couples, it’s unlikely we’ll revisit Ripley and Joe’s story but I’m hopeful the issues raised might be resolved in another story; Brett’s perhaps, if he has one. My point being, don’t expect for all issues raised to be resolved in this book. Aside from that, it’s a good read.
Bear Moon isn't just a shifter romance, it has many magical things going on and it is set in the same settings as S.M. Blooding's Whiskey Witches.
I liked the story and the many characters. The world is built very well and the story flows smoothly. It has also an interesting view on shifters and especially on padfoots; what they are and what they represent.
When Ripley returns to her uncle's funeral, she has no intention to stay. Her old home town has nothing for her, well, except Joe, a bear shifter. Ripley refuses to acknowledge the fire that rekindles the moment they meet again. She only knows how to run and she has no intention to change her ways now.
Circumstances force her to stay, her help is needed and deep inside she doesn't want to leave Joe. Ever. She just doesn't know how it would be possible for her to stay. Hattie Hunt describes Ripley's inner struggle well, as a reader you want to courage her to acknowledge the fact that she has an important role in her community if she only accepted who she truly is.
Bear Moon is a story of romance, courage and growth. It is a story of overcoming prejudice and learning to trust and to me, Bear Moon represented a story of being true to yourself and embrace the person that you are, nevertheless who your inner creature is.
This is a really impressive book. Set in the works of the Whiskey Witches series and with many overlapping characters, it's the story of a woman named Ripley and Decima, the padfoot that inhabits her. It is a great story, with a love in the making between Ripley and Joe, her best shifter beau, bigotry, issues of loyalty both deserved and undeserved, the threat of death hanging over several of the characters and so much more. What makes this novel so very good, however, is the author's view of what a padfoot is and what it's role is. The padfoot in this novel is very similar to the spirit animals that inhabit, and share the body, of shape-shifters in many paranormal fiction novels. There are important differences though, chief of which is that in this series the Padfoot have a special connection to death. They're much closer to the hellhounds of mythology, like Cŵn Annwn,Garmr and Cerberus, than they are to shifters. The implications of this, both how it impacted Ripley before the time of this tale and how it further impacts her in the story, is what drives the storytelling.

Ripley returns home after the death of her uncle and meets Joe, a bear shifter. What follows is a love story that could go either way. It could last a lifetime or end in disaster. The battle to find a cure for Joe's brother from a form of rabies that affects shifters is intense. They have to struggle against the regional alpha, Joe's mother and Ripley's unease with being back in her home town. Leslie is recruited to help find a cure and must succeed or the entire population of shifters could be wiped out. This is another great book in the Whiskey Witches universe. Although some familiar characters appear, this is mostly driven by shifters, new and old. The characters are terrific as always. I loved the snark and attitude of the characters, especially Ripley. Another homerun in this continuing saga of the Whiskeys and their allies.

I was amazed and enthralled while reading Bear Moon by Hattie Hunt. This book managed to weave an intricate paranormal world which is called the Whiskey Witch Universe through which its characters moved to tell a fascinating story. The world within this story is so intricate and lively it grabbed my attention and kept me more and more fascinated with each page I turned. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a great story told in a well built paranormal world that is seamlessly put together. Bear Moon is full of paranormal thrills, chills, romance, and tales of the incredible!
Great read! Set in the Whiskey Witches Universe, many of the characters from Whiskey Witches show up in this book. Considering that Ripley doesn't trust witches, it gets a bit tense when she has to ask them for help. Well written, with a great plot and characters, will leave you wanting more!
Shiftings (Whiskey Witches Series Boxset Book 2): Since these were three different series, I read each series instead of the first book of all three and then the second books. Since I've read all the books since Demon Whiskey, it didn't hurt the reading order. If you're new to the Whiskey Witches world, you'll do yourself a favor by starting with the first book Whiskey Witches. While each book can be read without the previous books, there are ongoing storylines carried through the all the series. Knowing the past just makes for a richer, deeper understanding of the individual books. I contacted Blooding to review her books.
F. J. Wolfram, Big Bad Djinn #1 - This is my second read by this author and I enjoyed BBD. I've read the Whiskey Witches series and this spinoff is the next step. After reading Double-Double Demon by Wolfram, I backtracted to this series. BBD is Dexx's domain, with Paige being elsewhere working leaving him behind to handle things. Well written, fast paced and with plenty of action, which is what D-DD shares. The characters aren't unknown to us that have read WW and the new ones add depth and conflict to the story. There's plenty of intrigue, suspense and humor to keep the reader glued to the pages. 4*
F. J. Wolfram, Lizard Wizard #2 - This is probably better than Big Bad Djinn, which was pretty good. Well written, fast paced and funny, LW is a great addition to the series. Dexx has grown in his roles. The intriguing storylines twist like a bronco keeping the reader's interest until the last page. I'm ready for more of the Red Star gang. 4*
Hattie Hunt, Bear Moon #1 - This is my first read by this author and I enjoyed BM. Well written and intriguing. These characters are interesting and characters from the Whiskey Witches are present, too. The twisting plot holds suspense, gamut of emotions and is fast paced. 4*
Hattie Hunt, Grizzly Attraction #2 - A bear and a porcupine? Sometimes diversity is too much, but it didn't matter in this interesting story. Well written with the emphasis heavy on family and friends, this was a quickly read story. The characters were good, even the baddies, and made for an interesting and entertaining story. 4*
S. M. Blooding, Desert Shaman #1 - More of the Whiskey Witches and Paige is going nuts with all her responsibilities. Well written and filled with intrigue and suspense, this fast paced story keeps the reader immersed until the end. The old characters are dealing, again, with new, nasty characters. But there's still humor, along with more paranormal dudes. 4*
S. M. Blooding, Whiskey on the Rocks #2 - Paige has less than four weeks to go before their twins are born and is she at home resting for the big event? Are you new to the series? Heck no, she's working. Well written, intriguing, fast paced, just the normal writing style of Ms. Blooding, along with a good dose of humor. The characters are great as always and keep the twisting storylines moving and the reader immersed in all the happenings. Another WW story well done. 4* Shiftings Series End.
Ripley Kent arrived by bus in Troutdale, Oregon, wondering why she even came back after 8 years, despite her uncle’s funeral. The local Chief of Police Tuck welcomed her as she stepped down. He had practically raised her the last couple of years she had been in town and she hadn’t realized how much she had missed him. They walked over to a sandwich shop and was told there were lots of changes in the past year. Witches had moved in and were even working in a paranormal branch of the police force, despite the fact that witches normally didn’t mingle or get along with the paranormal community. Their kids even attended the paranormal schools! Lots more had changed, but that was the important information she wanted to pass.
Tuck and Ripley walked outside and Tuck told her he needed her. With her uncle now dead, they didn’t have a padfoot – they needed a watcher and protector. A padfoot was a death dog. It was death, and it chose a human host. She had taken it, able to see death’s trace lingering on people and, with no training being given to her, tried to use it to save people like her uncle and father had. But the superstitious people of the town had not been kind to her. She definitely wasn’t sticking around and didn’t want Tuck assuming she would!
Ripley decided to go out on patrol for Tuck this once. Out in the woods, she met up with Joe Elliot, the one she had left and still cared deeply for. While they talked, the padfoot alerted her to a problem – a rabid wolf was out there and she had to kill it before others were hurt. By the time she found it, it had bitten Joe’s brother, Brett. Unless she found someone else to “trade” for Brett’s death, he would die. Will she be able to save Joe’s brother who means the world to him? Or will she have to allow him to die? It she waits too long to figure it out, the padfoot will make the decision for her.
This was a really good story that keeps the reader’s attention all the way through. The padfoot concept was fascinating, much like a shifter in some ways, spirit animal characteristics, but with death as the focal point of its existence. Finding Joe again stirs up old feelings for Ripley. Chaos could erupt if Brett dies when he has found his mate but is then bitten by the rabid wolf. Ripley will naturally be blamed when people know she is the padfoot! The tension soars as the story line races on with more and more being added in. Grab a copy of the book and follow along as Ripley must deal with a load of changes in her hometown, a difficult decision that literally is life-threatening, and a strong possibility that she may be falling in love all over again! All she had wanted to do was wrap up her uncle’s death and get out of town fast! Could it be too late for that?

This is my 1st review but definitely not my 1st read for Hattie Hunt and this is an absolutely fantastic story, I also have a copy of this book on iBooks. Ripley has been ostracised by the town she grew up in. As an outcast her father never believed that she would become a Padfoot because she was a female, but it happened her father had a heart attack and the Padfoot was passed on to her and not her brother like it was supposed to. Ripley didn’t tell anyone she saw her own mother’s death but instead of staying to do the job and train she left, she also left the love of her life and her best friend Jo. Ripley came back in to town to take care of her uncles funeral and she was hoping to leave without anyone spotting her unfortunately it didn’t work out that way. Wow this is an amazing story and I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read.
This is a complex yet fascinating and easy to read story that kept me turning page after page as I just "had to know what happened". Riley had basically left where she grew up after the people treated her so badly. She left her childhood sweetheart and all she knew to escape. But now she's back at Troutdale to clear up affairs after the death of her uncle. But Joe, her sweetheart, despite being heartbroken when she left desperately needs her help to save his brother. This storyline weaves you through Riley's journey on returning 'home' but will she and Joe stand a chance at HEA? This is the second book that I've read by Hattie Hunt and I do enjoy her writing style and the way she draws you into her stories with her fabulous characters. I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. Definitely recommended
First let me state that I received an Advance Reader Copy, (ARC), but this in no way influences my review. I always leave an honest review. Also this author is new to me, and I hope it won't be the last.
Wow!!! This story is gr8. Ridley comes back home for her uncle's funeral and she really doesn't want to be there because her childhood wasn't a happy time. She runs into her old love and sparks are still there, but she fights it. There's witches now living there and she's mind of bigoted towards them, but ends up needing they're help. So much more happening. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up
Ripley has returned to Troutdale to light het uncle's funeral pyre. She has no plans to be there for any length of time. As a padfoot, the shifters of the town have never treated her well. She gets drawn into the effort to save the brother of her ex, a bear shifter that was bitten by a rabid wolf. Sexy, sweet characters, and an interesting plot with some fascinating twists, and some laugh out loud moments. Lots of shifters and witches. Fantastic read.

Ripley came home to put her uncle to rest after being gone for six years. She left when she was chosen as host by the padfoot, a death dog. Joe is the bear shifter Ripley left behind and he still wants her. Ripley is scared, partly because the bear alpa, who happens to be Joe’s mother, hates her. When tragedy strikes Ripley does everything she can to fix things, bringing together shifters, witches and humans. It’s an exciting, varied world filled with possibilities that I look forward to visiting again. I voluntarily reviewed this book.
It's a race against time to find a cure when one of the local bears contracts rabies in this story set in the Whiskey witches story line. Alma, Leslie and the kids all play their role in the story line which introduces the local bear clan and Ripley a padfoot (a dog not quite shifter) with death powers. A well told story with interesting characters and an intricate part of the series. Definitely worth the read.
Bear Moon is set in the Whiskey Witches Universe and takes place at the same time as Big Bad Djinn. This is a well written story filled with so many amazing characters including witches, padfoots and bear shifters. In this book we get Ripley and Joe's story and what an eventful journey we go on with them. Overall a great addition to the Whiskey Universe and I look forward to reading more in the future. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
