Exalting Jesus in Revelation

Rate this book
Exalting Jesus in Revelation is part of the Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary series.  This series affirms that the Bible is a Christ-centered book, containing a unified story of redemptive history of which Jesus is the hero. It’s presented as sermons, divided into chapters that conclude with a “Reflect & Discuss” section, making this series ideal for small group study, personal devotion, and even sermon preparation. It’s not academic but rather presents an easy-reading, practical and friendly commentary. The series is projected to be 48 volumes.

Finally finished this one. Loved spending time in the final book of the Bible, and this commentary helped make sense of how it all fits into the story as a whole.

Definitely recommend this series! This is the fourth volume I’ve read and they are all solid.

UPDATE April 2025-June 2025
Spent 10-12 weeks reading and studying for the second time. A mesmerizing book of the Bible, it will benefit me to continue to study because I always learn something new.

Awesome! I love the Christ Centered Exposition series. I finally understand this important book of the Bible. Highly recommend!

Solid exposition from a premillennial dispensationalist point-of-view. Contains a lot of great quotes and applications. Also gives clear explanations on some of the more mysterious elements in Revelation without becoming to dogmatic. Whether one agrees with all the nuances of interpreting the Book of Revelation presented by Akin, he still manages to grow your expectation for Christ's return and highlights the comfort of knowing that God is in control of all of history and the future. This commentary is not written at an advanced level and is therefore easy to use in devotionals and Bible studies. When it comes to sermon preparation though, a more comprehensive commentary may be preferred.

Reading any commentary straight through is not going to be supremely captivating, and reading this one-- on one of the more confusing books in the canon-- was both kind of boring and disappointing. Anyway, the first three chapters take up a hugely disproportionate amount of the text, which is to say that sober commentary, like the rest of us, find most of what seems reasonable to talk about in the general situation of the book and the letters to the churches, and the whole middle of the book to get a confused shrug. Still. Come Lord Jesus, come.

This commentary series is geared primarily toward pastors. I used Platt’s volume on Matthew for a small group study, and found it very useful and insightful. I began using this volume on Revelation during my devotional times. Unfortunately, it didn’t meet the high expectations that I had for it.

Some parts of the book are helpful. I can see the outlines provided for each chapter being useful for pastors as they prepare sermons. But the commentary itself was not a very exciting read. I was not impressed with the research underlying this work. Reliance on popular level commentaries (such as the Expositor’s Bible Commentary or the NIV Application Commentary) combined with a severe overuse of large block quotations from such sources demonstrate that this author doesn’t have much to say that isn’t already said elsewhere.

Akin writes from a dispensational perspective. He did a good job drawing out spiritual truths without dogmatizing about the particulars. I appreciated this humble approach, even if I disagreed with some of his conclusions. In this way, the book may be useful for people outside his own interpretive tradition.

God is Sovereign!

How the "end of the world" will occur has been a topic of discussion and confusion for centuries. Thankfully we have the book of Revelation to give us insight on the coming events. But even with this final book in the Bible, we can struggle with knowing what everything means. "Exalting Jesus in Revelation" clearly walked me through the book with clarity, connection to Scripture in the Old and New Testaments, and an understanding of different viewpoints that are popular among theologians. But more than breaking down every verse was the resounding truth preached throughout: God is Sovereign! Worship God and the Lamb alone!

I am not a pastor or member of church staff. I'm just a simple woman who loves to know and learn the Word. I highly recommend this commentary for any who seek to understand what He is telling us through the book of Revelation.

Wow!! I have never read Revelation before just because of a lack of knowledge and honestly was a little bit scared to. This commentary was extremely helpful and insightful and had me looking forward to reading it!! Just like the title says, it does a great job pointing everything back to Jesus. It goes through all the different viewpoints with evidence while the author respectfully explains his opinion without too much bias. I am someone who used to fear the end times but now I am looking forward to Jesus’ return more than ever! Definitely recommend

The "Christ-Centred Exposition Commentary" series is a treasure trove. If you're looking to add or start your commentary set, this is a must for any Biblical evangelical pastor/preacher-teacher/layman or any Christian who's looking to deepen their understanding of the Bible. It's vital for every believer to know that the entirety of Scriptures, as it stands as the inerrant, infallible, divinely inspired word of God, all points and testifies of Jesus Christ.

If your looking to dig into revelation but don’t want to do it on your own this is a well balanced commentary. Brings in multiple viewpoints where there is debate not just what the author thinks. Provides good thought questions at the end of each section as well.

Decent commentary on Revelation. Didn’t knock my socks off. I definitely disagree with Akin on some things but that’s bound to happen. Overall it is pretty great, though, for a pastoral-devotional help in understanding.

A great book to help me get through a 30-week study of Revelation leading other men. I am sure there are more profound commentaries available but this got the job done for what I needed.

Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!

Super helpful guide for the entirety of revelation, especially when teaching to others! Sticks to the heart of what scripture is actually saying and doesn’t get into the speculation of the world

Great commentary, but way too much material that just references other commentaries. Some chapters felt like a copy and paste exercise.

A brief homiletical commentary filled with outlines and charts. The author is consistently premillennialist. A very good tool for preachers.

Pretty mediocre - if you want serious help interpreting the symbolism, look elsewhere. If you just want a cheat sheet of sermons through Revelation, I suppose this might work - if you just want to use the text to jumping off discussion points.
