Frank

June folds socks. She comments on Dallas she shops in the supermarket. She sits in the pub. Frank sees her, but he doesn’t know why; nobody else does. Set in Airdrie, Scotland in the 1980s, Frank is a touching, bittersweet and gently humorous novel that explores how a father and daughter cope in grief. For Frank, holding on for longer is the least painful way to let go. For Jackie, it means losing herself in the music of the decade and seeking out a family of her own. But who is holding onto whom?

I loved this book so much! The writing was incredibly vivid and I felt like I could see each character as they went about their lives. The story was incredibly moving, even though it was an emotional story, I still enjoyed Franks interactions with his family and friends as they helped him work through his grief as well as his personal musings . Seeing the point of view of other characters was refreshing as well to get to know them better and from a different perspective from Frank's. I also loved all of the 80s pop culture references as a big fan of music from that period! I would definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys books about families, 1980s Scotland, or a good story in general!

I picked this book up simply because the story is set in my home town of Airdrie, Scotland and then I struggled to put it down again. It’s basically a family story but the writing puts you in the heart of everything that happens and you get very wrapped up in all of the characters. I’ve now also read the second book in the trilogy “Jackie” and can’t wait for the final instalment to come out.
I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who reads.

What a lovely book! I read it in two days but could have finished it in one sitting if I’d had the time. So beautifully written, I felt transported back to 80’s Scotland and was very reluctant to leave again. A beautiful, realistic portrayal of grief and life moving on. I’m so pleased to see that the author is writing another book in this series, I can’t wait. Highly recommended.
