Hemlock Cove is bustling with activity.
FBI Agent Landon Michaels has officially moved in with his girlfriend Bay Winchester, Mrs. Little is planning an impromptu festival and there’s a new witch in town. The question is: Is Scarlet Darksbane a real witch?
Bay is in the middle of all of it. She has her hands full thanks to her imminent purchase of The Whistler … and the fact that Landon and Thistle seem to be butting heads while sharing the same roof. Thistle isn’t long for the guesthouse, but the weeks of overlap before she moves promise to try Bay’s patience.
Things only get worse when one of the renaissance festival performers is found dead in the town square and Bay and her wacky cohorts find themselves in the middle of another messy mystery. The murder has ritual overtones, and Bay is worried that everyone will start pointing fingers at the real witches if a suitable suspect isn’t found.
That’s only one of her problems, though. It seems the new witch – who seems to be focused on entrenching herself in Hemlock Cove as fast as possible – might also be a suspect. She’s definitely on Aunt Tillie’s radar, and the elderly Winchester is determined to uncover all of Scarlet’s secrets.
It’s up to Bay, Landon, Aunt Tillie and the rest of the motley crew to figure out the truth and head off a killer before another victim falls prey to a demented fiend with murder on his or her mind.
The big question is: Will Bay survive to uncover the truth or will she be the next victim?

Aunt Tilly never disappoints.
“I’m curious. Back in my day, men didn’t try to make themselves look like women. There were no naked chests. When you started sleeping with someone you often woke up wondering if you’d done it with Bigfoot the night before .”
My favorite character:)

A Witch Before Dying: Wicked Witches of the Midwest 11
Chronological order recommended.

In A Nutshell: The Winchester witches have some competition, there is a new witch in town. Or is she? As an idea, the plot had immense possibilities. Then there are the characters who bring it to life. And the Winchesters, save aunt Tillie, and the men save Marcus, Thistle's beau, are pathetic. I was hoping for a little adult attitude in this one. It failed miserably.

The Protagonists: The story is centred around Bay Winchester, a weak, insipid character that gives a blonde a lousy name, and Landon Michaels, a man with issues who needs to buy or rent his own home. He lives with Bay in her mother's accommodation.

The Plot:Hemlock Cove has another festival (they are almost weekly) and another dead body turns up, they are almost daily.

It is a book for the fans. The humour is not to my taste. It is puerile. Telling an adult that you will make her eat dirt in every book, in every chapter is wearisome. Not even Aunt Tillie, the saving grace and woman who keeps me returning to this series was funny. I struggled to read this book, continuing in the vain hope it would get better. But you know the saying live in hope die in despair. I have a couple of shorts to read but I think I am over the series.

😐 (bored)

Equally as good and entertaining as all the previous offerings in this series. I have come to think of the winchesters as literary family and each and every one of them has their place and amuses me no end. Thistle and Landon are fitting like cat and dog, so when a supposed new witch comes to town, it gives bay something else to focus on and it's not a good feeling at all. At the same time there is of course a murder to solve and Bay proves yet again that her instincts are good.

All out cosy good fun with my favourite witchy family.

What's With the Redhead?

Another Wicked Witches of the Midwest winner. Do the Winchester witches have competition? Who is Scarlet Darkbane? Aunt Tillie's determined to out the foolish imposter. But the murder of Adele Twigg in what looks like a witches setting throws everyone's plans awry. Why kill one of the leaders of a traveling renaissance group? All these questions and more are raised while Bay & Landon adjust to living together. Oh, and there's bacon involved.

4 Stars... The Winchester witches are all grown up...Well, sort of... Relationships are blossoming and big changes are underway for these lovely ladies, but when a new witch comes to Hemlock Cove and a ghastly murder occurs it's all hands on deck to solve the case and run the new witch out of town... Banning together and using all the curses, I mean magic, at their disposal these zany witches come ready for battle... Another hysterical and heartwarming story in this fun filled fantasy series!:)

This one didn't make too much impact on me. Yes the relationships changed and grew but the mystery didn't seem too great to me. Mrs Little is getting a bit annoying now and why is she one of the only ones not dying lol. All of her friends are dead now.

The Winchesters are back and crazy as ever in this 11th novel of the Wicked Witches of the Midwest series by Amanda M. Lee.
This book is as much about character and relationship development as it is about the mystery. Bay and Chief Terry adore each other. The Chief takes his role as surrogate father seriously, even willing to get on Bay’s wrong side to protect her. Thistle and Landon continue poking each other until near Armageddon ensues, yet they really do understand and respect each other. Bay’s taking over the Whistler shows growth as she maturely refrains from having any ill-timed meltdowns over upcoming responsibilities. Aunt Tillie, of course, isn’t doing much growing, but I wouldn’t want her to change anyway.
All in all, a very enjoyable read. I always love catching up with my favourite Hemlock Cove citizens.

Landon and Bay are officially living together, the downside is Thistle is stilling living with them as well, and Thistle and Landon seem to fight constantly. Bay has had enough of it, and when Mrs. Little brings in a new "witch" to town things start to look a little crazy for Bay.

This one was really good. I enjoyed the story line a lot in this one, and I loved how Bay did her best to protect people, and she often acted like Aunt Tillie. I adored that!

The only downsides to this one was the fighting between Landon and Thistle was just stupid to me, and pointless. I didn't like it, but it didn't last long in the book so that was fine. Then the fact that Landon seemed to doubt Bay's instincts about the new witch, but then said he needed her help because she was good at reading people. That was beyond annoying, but other than that I thought this one was good!

Original Rating (11.01.2021) - 4 stars

Rating upon reread (12.06.2022) - 3.5 stars

I enjoyed reading it but nothing really happened towards the bigger plot. There was so much potential with Scarlet Darksbane subplot which wasn't realised. It would've been fun to see them actually go to war. It was all very anticlimactic.

Oh Mrs Little when will you learn?

Mrs Little decides unilaterally to arrange yet another pre-Christmas festival and invites a renaissance troupe The Twigg family as entertainment, she's also invited Scarlet Darksbane to open a new magic shop right next door to Hypnotic.. her order books show she's copying everything Clove and Thistle sell even down to ordering in skull candles to imitate Thistle's work.. Mrs Little is smugly satisfied she's going to oust the Winchesters once and for all..

According to Mrs Little, Scarlet is a real witch and shouldn't just give the Winchesters a run for their money and power but her the edge over Aunt Tillie at last..

When the Twigg matriarch Adele's body is found hanging in the street in the small hours, having been exsanguinated and with various "witchy" symbols and Theban text written in her blood all around her a statement is definitely being made. Scarlet is watching from the shadows is this her handiwork?

Scarlet makes few friends putting the moves on all the men in town as a scared and vulnerable new resident but talking down to and taunting the women. Bay's secure in her relationship with Landon but it doesn't stop Scarlet making her moves or threats.

The Twigg's must go on with the show as Mrs Little's contract is watertight but things aren't all they seem and the grieving family appear to be hiding rather a lot from Chief Terry and Landon.

Bay and her cousins can't quite decide who's the guilty party.. everyone is giving off negative vibes.. but some solid research and a trip to Grand Rapids will start to clear the truth.. now they have only a few questions to resolve.. Who's the grifter? Who's the murderer? Or is it possible it's one and the same?

Either way Mrs Little is going to be disappointed!!

Bay and Landon are finally living together and there are only two problems. Thistle would be one problem due to the fact that she is still living in the house with Landon and Bay. The second problem would be the new red head in town.

Thistle and Marcus have been transition a barn into a house and it's not quite done. Which means Landon, Bay, and Thistle are all under the same roof. Landon and Thistle are just constantly back and forth at each other in a similar fashion to how Bay and Thistle can be. The guest house is feeling crowded and emotions are running high.

Mrs. Little took over the festival planning committee and is planning a new festival! No one is super thrilled when they hear it will be happening very quickly. They are intrigued however by some of the things she has planned. Mrs. Little signed up a two very new and different acts to help make this festival the best one yet.

If emotion weren't running high enough for Bay dealing the newspaper soon being hers, Landon moving in, the typical family drama, there is now a feisty red head on the loose in town who is eyeing up Landon. Thistle, Clove, and Bay dive into finding out what the new local red head is up to. Can they figure out what she is up to before the new girl gets to Landon?

This book is full of twists, turns, and lots of unexpected events. Another amazing book added to the series. A must read for anyone following the series.

Another good story in this series. Bay and Landon are now living together and Thistle and Marcus will be moving out pretty soon.

Mrs. Little continues to be an ultra-nasty person. There's a new person in town, Scarlet, who seems to be a witch. It's not long before there's another death and this one is pretty gruesome. (You kind of wonder, with at least one death per book, how long it'd be before people decide moving out of town might not be a bad idea.)

Anyhow, Bay and the others are now dealing with another murder, a new maybe witch that is not a nice person either and at least one if not two murderers. As usual, my favorite character in the story is Aunt Tillie. Can't say much else without giving too much away but I really like this as I have liked all the other books in the series so far.

This was another fantastic read! I haven’t been reading as many books as I usually do, lately, but when I start one of Amanda Lee’s Wicked Witches of the Midwest Mysteries I can’t seem to put it down! A snark here, a jab there...
What I’d like to see more of (or at all) is more magic from Bay. It’s always Aunt Tillie storming in to save the day. Bay is a witch, too, so why doesn’t she grasp her roots and do more magic? I hope the next book (A Breath of Witchy Air) has Bay, Thistle, and Clove shooting sparks from their fingertips or something of the like. C’mon!
I did like Scarlet’s character’s friction and wish Bay wasn’t wrong as far as Scarlet being up to something. I wanted Scarlet to actually be a witch and maybe become friends with the Winchester family (like it was with Sam in the earlier books). Well onto the next book!

Domestic issues begin the story - Bay, Landon, Thistle and Marcus are temporarily sharing the guesthouse and tempers flare constantly - making for some snarky and humorous moments. If that's not enough, there's a new witch in town intent on challenging the Winchester witches (she obviously doesn't know Aunt Tillie!). Then there's the dead body found in the town square with pagan symbols surrounding it and a renaissance troupe in town for festival making for a large suspect pool for Chief Terry and Landon to sift through. Each book is like a visit with family - I love this series. And best of all, the books NEVER fail to make me laugh!

This series get's better with each and every book.

A Witch Before Dying was fantastic, a great family adventure for the Winchesters, Aunt Tillie was at her absolute best Thistle and Clove did their parts Bay of course found herself in deep trouble as usual and Landon well Landon was handsome as ever....lol Chief Terry, Marcus, Winnie, Twiler, Marnie and Sam were all around for fun and frivolity and of course Mrs Little was cause trouble at every corner and festival.

Good triumphs over evil and the bad guys go to jail eventually but there was lots of stuff in between that kept me very entertained.

Are witches being incriminated for a crime they had nothing to do with.

Another winner! Another Festival brings a witch and a renaissance troupe into town. With the death of the troupe leader and the finger pointing at witches how will they resolve the issue especially as the witch is making a play for all the men. Another great read full of sarcasm and humour that will have you wondering how they are going to beat the odds to return the town to it's peaceful existence. Well as peaceful as Aunt Tillie will allow. The series is one of the few that is at book 11 and still runs as readable as book 1. Normally by this time I am fed up with things being repeated but this is as fresh as ever.

I got one. I figured out who was the bad guy is!! What an awesome feeling! Well I thought this one was a little more predictable. But only because I figured it out 3/4 through the book. I’m glad Landon is finally able to move in with Bay finally but it would have been better if it was just them two. The bickering between him and thistle is getting on my nerves. It is funny that Bay and Marcus just go outside and have cocktails while it’s all happening. As always Aunt Tilley is the best character but how can she not be. I love that she just gets in there and makes her presence known. I can’t help but bust out laughing and her antics.

Vintage Winchester

The Winchester witches are by far my favorite book witches. Many have tried to pull off the Winchester formula but no one else has been able to get a decent balance of snark and love, or mystery and family politics. Most carry the snark too far, and fail to show the love behind it all.

This latest entry is better than ever, with two mystery storylines, and absolutely vintage Winchester humor. I sincerely hope that Ms. Lee continues to write these because I'm always going to wonder what happens next.

Aunt Tilly to the rescue

Amanda M Lee always writes a great story when it comes to the Winchester witches and this is no exception.

Mrs. Little brings a new witch to town and sets up a new festival. Murder happens and the town is blamed because of its witch theme. How could the witches not do it? Is the new witch to blame or is she just out to make trouble since she is friends with Mrs. Little.

You need to read to see how Aunt Tilly comes to the rescue but she does in a way that only Tilly can do.

A witch before dying

Loved this installment of my favorite witchy crew. I absolutely love it when Aunt Tilly gets mad. Whether creative curses or a show of force. The dynamic with this family really works. There is a new witch in town, but she isn't prepared for the Winchesters. This drifter has bitten off way more than she can chew. Winnie has a new breakfast item for Land on,which couldn't be more perfect. Murder and mayhem and a dose of crazy. Looking forward to the next installment.

Something was missing in this book. Aunt Tillie wasn’t as snarky. Bay was whiny. Thistle wasn’t at her best. And I missed the interactions between ALL the Winchester witches. Clove seems to be getting less and less “face” time with each book. I didn’t have any LOL moments and that’s what would’ve earned the ⭐️⭐️ needed for a perfect read. The reason I LOVE this series is because of the family dynamics and the supporting characters. This book seemed to only be about Bay and Landon (who is still my fave btw) which would be ok if the recent short stories weren’t all about them too.

Awesomely entertaining

This is an awesome series. A family which is in a small Michigantown that is steeped in supernatural mystery. They solve mysteries they get into trouble and they all have snarky attitude that are extremely entertaining they will make you laugh sometimes so hard you cry. The characters are great you can’t beat it. You have three cousins there three mothers and the great aunt Tillie who is my favorite character. Once you read one of these books you will be hooked.

Witchy crime solving, wicked romance and laughs make a perfect spell of a book.

I am hooked on the Wicked Witches of the Midwest series. Snarky humor that made me laugh out loud several times while still having just enough crime solving to wet your appetite, once you add in the loving but gooey romance, you have hit the trifecta of books. Ms. Lee isn't likely to win a Pulitzer with these books, but who needs one of those when you have this world in your head! Write on, Amanda, write on.

Wonderfully entertaining

I started this series well over a year ago and I keep going back to it and re-reading it over and over. I love the personality of every single character in this series. It’s as if they could be your family or best friend. I would and have recommended this series to everyone I meet. It’s a light read that I go to after reading something heavy or dark. Aunt Tillie is the greatest character of all and I actually picture her and all of the characters as someone I know as I am reading this story. Love this series, keep them coming please!

I enjoyed another series by the same author, and her books are free on Kindle Unlimited, so I gave this series a chance, reading all the books back to back, so they all run into each other in my head. It was fun. If you like cozies (light mysteries without much suspense - think "Murder She Wrote") and you like paranormal novels, this series is perfect for you. The characters are loveable and a lot of fun. The mysteries are not that hard to solve, but enjoyable all the same. Aunt Tillie is a really funny character.

O. M. G. This family! Witches, ghosts, a bunch of women living together (because that’s always a good idea), granny running around in helmet and inappropriate leggings hexing people. I just can’t put these books down. I’ve read the whole series and am getting ready to start over. I like Amanda M. Lee in general for the snark level and fun characters. You can be guaranteed that if you like funny hijinks, hunky guys, quirky families and paranormal settings, Ms. Lee will be a solid choice every time. P.S. She also writes as Lily Harper Hart and her Harper Harlow Series is hysterical.

So love the wicked witches

Every book gets better and better. The girls relationships are growing. Landon has finally stopped his whining. I almost stopped reading due to his possessiveness. It was getting old. He's finally letting Bay grow into her own. The girls are moving on with there loves but still staying connected. I can't wait till the next book to see how they continue to get into trouble.

I️ love this family.

My first and still favorite series by Amanda M Lee (although Avery Shaw is a close second). Mischief and mayhem seem to follow the Winchester’s where ever they go, so the new witch in town is in for quite a bumpy ride when she targets Bay and Landon. Thistle and Tillie are still causing trouble, Landon and Bay are still way to schmaltzy for Chief Terry’s taste and poor Clove is still a kvetch. Great addition to the series!

I was going to say that I enjoyed this but, looking back, it took me a long, long time to finish. And I had trouble remembering what it was even about. Neither of those is a good sign.

I didn't hate this by any means, but at a certain point it became a chore to finish rather than an enjoyment to read. Then again, I wouldn't let myself start reading A Great Reckoning until I was done, and that might have affected things.
