The Great Space Race #6

Flare: Team Corona

Rate this book
Team Corona could go all the way, if they don't go straight to hell.

All Kayana wants is respect. Jilted by her fiancée, turned out by her family, and rejected by her crew – esteem is in short supply. When she hears about the cash prize for winning the Great Space Race, she realizes it's more than enough money to get her old life back. Or buy herself an asteroid someplace where she won't care what people think.

Ax Turner just needs to hide, and the Race gives him the best opportunity to do so. In plain sight. Surely the thugs and criminals he's ripped off won't come after him while cameras are rolling on the galaxy's most popular reality game show. And if they do, well, having a partner who's able to fight and looks like a devil seems like a win.

They're on the run -  from the past, from the lethal challenges of the Great Race, from their feelings, and straight into each other. They've got more than their share of problems, and those secrets could drive them apart, or be the key to winning the biggest prize of all: each other.

3.5 Stars for Team Corona. A fun adventure but not my favorite in this series.

In the book FLARE:TEAM CORONA, Octiron Media, the founder and sponsor of the Great Space Race, is again looking for great spectator ratings above all else - neither safety nor the contestants lives are important. Even so, the contest rules require both contestants of each team to remain alive throughout the competition for the team to continue the race. After the 1st challenge begins, if one member dies, the other will be disqualified. The first team to complete 3 challenges, earning 100 points wins. All teams that finish the 3 challenges within the time requirements will receive some prize allotment.

Team Corona as of Day 2 -
Original team member, Ax Turner is an innovative and quick-thinking human familiar with space and danger. Sometime prior to the race’s beginning, Ax double-crossed his ex-boss/ex-fiancé, a mercenary and a shady drug distributor, and she is now seeking him - out for his blood. Ax joined the race both for the large winning purse but also to hide In-Plain-Sight.

Emergency replacement team member -
Kaylana is a Malebranki from the planet G’henna, members of the fringe-alliance. A native of a hot and dark planet, Kayana can tolerate great heat, breathe air toxic to humans and has excellent night vision. Her people can manipulate and produce fire with their minds - but Kayana, not so much. With navy blue/black hair and scarlet skin, Kayana has pointed ears, tiny scales edging her cheek bones and chin, sharp and pointed canine teeth, and a curvy yet strongly built combat-trained body. Malebranki’s are a warrior race, with a pragmatic mentality regarding greed, profit, and revenge. They consider piracy a suitable occupation yet as individuals follow specific Rules of Conduct to guide them toward honorable Malebranki behavior. Due to Kayana’s inability to produce fire, she is a pariah among her family and her people. Humans among other races, being outside their complex hierarchy and House system, are of no significance to them. As a pirate, Kayana is currently attempting to regain face among her people.

On Day 2 of the Great Space Race (and before the 1st Challenge has begun) the original 2 person crew of Team Corona is fatally attacked by Pirate Kayana and her pirate ship. Team Corona’s luxury racing yacht is quickly disabled and Kayana boards to claim the ship. Kayana discovers her entire crew is mutinying when they desert her alone on Ax’s ship and pull away. Kayana expects to be blown to bits by her own crew but instead Ax fires upon her ship and her treacherous crew is obliterated. Ax’s originally assigned team mate, Darryn, is immediately killed during the pirates’ initial shots and attack. When Kayana finds herself stranded alone on Ax’s race ship, rather than kill each other off Ax and Kayana decide to team up, and continue the race. Thrown together in desperation, Kayana and Ax must somehow and quickly form a functioning team because more pirates are about, the other Race teams are already moving toward their 1st Challenge, and Octiron Media has sabotaged the race against success. Octiron wants great ratings - struggling teams rate well. Can Kayana and Ax forego the past and work toward trusting each other? They must survive not only the dangers of the Great Race but also the deadly attempts by Ax’s ex. And can Team Corona survive long enough to win any points towards the purse?

A small and friendly 2 toned ball of fur named Fluff somehow gets aboard Team Corona’s space ship. It has a minimal role and reminds me of the Tribbles from the Original Star Trek episode - The Trouble with Tribbles.

I did enjoy reading Flare:Team Corona by JC Hay, an Enemies to Lovers trope, Space Opera romance title in the anthology series titled The Great Space Race. Flare:Team Corona had creative and descriptive challenge elements which were great fun and the story was fast moving. The challenges and settings were my favorite sections in FLARE. I struggled a bit with Ax as a character. He seemed mercenary and I couldn’t really care about him as I wished. Perhaps because of this, Ax and Kayana’s romantic relationship (which is steamy in nature) was a bit of a stretch for me as well. Sometimes I felt it worked, other times not so much - granted, Ax and Kayana had A LOT to overcome. I have purchased and look forward to the next title in this series - Orion’s Gate by Sabine Priestly. I have also read and very much enjoyed other titles and series (TriSystems) by JC Hay, and do recommend Flare:Team Corona and the other titles in the Great Space Race series to readers of Space Opera romances, “light” shifter romance novels, and readers who enjoy fast moving adventure romance novels. (My E version had various technical issues - mixed up words in a sentence, or missing/incorrect words - but it didn’t diminish my enjoyment overall).

Reader Cautions -
Violence - Similar to Vintage Sci-fI. Not graphic.
Profanity - Yes. Strong language 5-10 times.
Sexual situations- Yes. On-scene intimacy between 2 MCs occurs before the 50% point and several more times in the latter 1/2. Due to the aforementioned, I do not recommend to young readers, and those who prefer Clean fiction should look elsewhere.

This was a super fun read!
I give it a 3.75, great characters, awesome story.
It makes me want to read the rest of the series.
I found that the story would benefit from 100 pages of world-building. The characters, story places they had been are fascinating; they just need that extra writing to flesh out the story.
