The Vampire's Housekeeper #6

Showdown with the Supernatural Hunter

Rate this book
The Stakes Couldn't Be Higher (Or More Pointy) In This Final Tale
What to do when the boy you kinda, sorta like wants to become a bloodsucking vampire? That's definitely not the necking Deidre had in mind. Things between her and Hunter are heating up, but they might cool down quickly when his heart stops beating.

Then there's the little problem of the supernatural hunter, Jude Cross, and his posse who are determined to sweep the world…okay, at least Ohio, free of the "supernatural menace." This menace includes Deidre's boss, her bingo buddies, and her best friend Drew. No one else takes Cross or his new reality show seriously, but that could be a major mistake.

Come join Deidre, Nathaniel, Hunter, Drew, and the rest of the gang for the final novella in the fun and funny VAMPIRE'S HOUSEKEEEPER CHRONICLES series. The excitement ramps up in this last chapter of Deidre's story as does the romance. (Hint: chubby girls with untameable hair CAN score.) Stakes will fly, hearts will be pierced (possibly metaphorically), and your favorite vampire's housekeeper will endure one more big adventure before she exits the stage.

Last in the “Vampire’s Assistant” books by Ms. Bennett. In this one, the plot mostly centers around that cad Jude Cross and his fellow monster hunters, in the televised reality series “Crosshairs.” Their goal is that of capturing and eliminating all manner of “nonhuman” folk, including shape-shifters, leprechauns, witches, you get the idea. Deirdre, Our plump, plucky heroine, is now aspiring to pursue an online MBA but remains in the employ of ancient Nathaniel, a vampire stuck in the past (most recently the Eisenhower administration) with very outdated notions about what is proper for a woman; after three years, Deidre has matured in her job, has befriended the Thing in the Basement, and certainly sees the “humanity” in all the bizarre creatures and half-creatures who are part of Nathaniel’s social circle. Nathaniel’s favorite TV show is “I Dream of Jeannie,” which he has seen several times over; Deirdre has substituted “Gilligan’s Island,” informing Nathaniel that it’s just a spinoff and that someday Gilligan and Jeannie will reunite, to Nathaniel’s delight. However, one of Deidre’s classmates in the MBA program has a line on a possible job in advertising for Deidre. Hmmmm….
Two other characters are important in this story: Hunter, erstwhile Pizza delivery boy/nursing student, who is in the final stages of his role as Nathaniel’s apprentice, meaning he’ll soon undergo the final transformation into a vampire (where are Deidre’s feelings and what’ll she do about them, hm?); and Dex, ghost with an intense environmental sensibility. Of course, there’s Drew the wereferret and his brother Tyler, Sloppy Joe the Zombie, the Thing in the Basement, Mad Mother the crazy ghost nun, Mr. Peanut, and all the Bingo pals, as well as three local fraternity Brothers who regularly sell their blood to Deidre to keep Nathaniel alive.
All these plotlines and characters come to a climax when Cross and his nasty friends capture…well, you’ll have to read all that for yourselves, ‘cause I don’t want to give away a lot of the development(s). For me, although somewhat predictable, the conclusion(s) were satisfying, with a nice ending to the whole thing. Ms. Bennett has done a fine job with these tales, and I’d recommend the series if you like light, fun albeit at times spooky reading, of course a little romance, and wacky characters. Gonna miss ‘em. Four stars.

I can't believe it is over!!!

I love this series...all of it. The funny, the sad, the friends, the enemies ....the supernaturals.
Ms. Bennett ended the series superbly. The love, the tears, the acceptance of being who you are, it was so down to earth. And we also got a glimpse of the thing in the basement. I wish it wasn't the end, but I'm glad it ended how it did.
I highly recommend this series!

The naturally Unnaturals

The Vampire chronicles of Deidre were a fun and funny read. Loved the imaginative look on the normal lives of supernatural humans. Thanksgiving dinners will never be the same. And the back tables at bingo may hold an intriguing surprise. Loved every second of these novellas.

This is the last in the collection all shorter stories. They are fun reads with unlikely heroes and events. Fun read.
