The biggest heavy metal band in the world in the early years of the 21st Century is Metallica, whose profile has now grown to the extent that they are no longer simply musicians. Justice For All: The Truth About Metallica is no simple biography. Although it tells the full story of this unique band to a level of detail never attempted before, it has a second purpose: to reveal and debunk the myths that have sprung up around Metallica over the years, based on false information, rumour, hyperbole and good old-fashioned showbiz hype. For example, many people believe that Metallica are solely responsible for the rise of thrash metal in the early Eighties; that their pivotal record, Metallica (the 'Black Album') is a historically important and musically unsurpassable work; and that the band were wholly right (or wholly wrong) to attack Napster in 2000, which ultimately resulted in the company's liquidation. More simply, thousands of Metallica fans believe that their music has been of unacceptably low quality since the Black Album - or alternatively, that every note they have recorded since then is the sound of genius at work.

This book provides a balanced, supported analysis of these and other pressing issues and provides clear, unbiased answers to the questions which surround this equally loved and hated band. The author has not resorted either to a simple volume of hero-worship (although he loves much of Metallica's music with an almost unhealthy passion) or a book of false accusations and vented spleen - although the band have been the subject of both critical approaches in the past. This book is one of a kind. Justice For All is the first, and probably the last, biography to tell the Metallica story as it deserves to be told: with honesty, accuracy and courage.

Joel McIver goes in great depth, mostly from eyewitness accounts, about the origination of Metallica. The chapters are broken down into yearly segments that discuss in great lengths milestones the band has made throughout their career. The book is filled with eyewitness accounts mostly from everyone that was there at the beginning. The book is also very opinionated. Joel McIver drives home what HE thinks about some of Metallica's milestones (as you'll see when you get the the LOAD and RELOAD era), and he states these opinions as if they are facts, which they aren't, which is why this book is rated 3 stars from me. However, I recommend it to any Metallica fan, because there is material in this book that isn't found in any other Metallica book. Enjoy.

The biography of the band starts off well, with detailed descriptions about how the band began and the heavy metal scene at the time. McIver is very knowledgable about the scene and has provided excellent insights from some of the most respected musicians in the industry. I do believe that this is a must read for Metallica fans, however-

McIver has brought too many of his own opinions of the bands work into what he calls 'The Truth About Metallica'. He provides harsh criticisms about the later works of the bands-i.e. Loads, St Anger- which dampens the mood of the read. To be honest I could not even finish the book as the criticisms became overwhelming and the book becomes more of a review than a biography. McIver is a long time Metallica fan who is bitter about the direction they have taken with their music. Very disapointing.

Te dwie gwiazdki to i tak przesada.
Książka straszna i zmuszałam się do skończenia. Naprawdę uważam że historia zespołu jest ciekawa, ale może jest lepiej przedstawiona w innej książce.
Nie wiem kto powiedział autorowi że umie pisać, ale zdecydowanie kłamał. Zero humoru i ciekawego przedstawienia historii. To było nawet gorsze niż czytanie Wikipedii, bo z niej pewnie i tak więcej bym się dowiedziała.
Czemu nudne tematy były tak bardzo rozwlekane a te ciekawe pomijane?
Tłumacz dosłownie kłócił się tam z autorem. Było to przynajmniej trochę śmieszne, ale jak to dostało pozwolenia na druk to ja nie wiem.
Autor myśli, że jest jakimś bogiem i jego opinie to fakty a ja swoich nie mogę posiadać. Jeśli on uważa że piosenka jest zła to powie mi o tym 7 razy, i nie dopuści nawet do myśli, że mi może się podobała.
Zmarnowałam swoje życie na czytanie tych 540 stron wypocin i zażaleń autora.
Tak ogólnie to nie pozdrawiam i nie polecam.👍

This is a very thorough telling of the ups and downs of Metallica's long career, starting with the band's formation in the early 80s, and following them through their four classic albums (Kill Em All, Ride the Lighting, Master of Puppets, ...And Justice for All), their massive breakthrough with the "Black Album," the thoroughly disappointing Load/Reload and St. Anger albums, and their respectable comeback with Death Magnetic.

A nearly 400 page book is probably a bit much even for real fans, and McIver's track-by-track breakdown of their every album and the listing of nearly every concert location becomes terribly tiring, but there's plenty of drama to keep the story very entertaining - the early firing of Dave Mustaine, the death of Cliff Burton, the Napster battle, and the near implosion of the band documented in the Some Kind of Monster movie. Particularly enjoyable was the telling of the band's early years, and the early days of metal in general.

While I wouldn't say Metallica remain one of my favorite bands, I have listened to them off and on for nearly 25 years. I generally share author Joel McIver's assessment that they were great up until the Black Album signaled the start of their downfall, and that the the Load albums were downright terrible, but I've still got a soft spot for Metallica. I last saw them live in 2008 and for a bunch of middle-aged millionaires they can still kick some serious ass. Reading their story in such great detail made for a guilty pleasure and an easy, enjoyable summer read.

This book has lots and lots of words in it - but they say very little. I could list every country and every state Metallica has ever played in, but I feel no closer to understanding them as individuals or as a band. There's a lot of detail that doesn't tell a story. Ultimately, is one person's critical opinion the truth?

Pokora za čitanje. Ova biografija Metallice ima nekoliko velikih nedostataka. Najveća mana je autorov pristup i nedostatak objektivnosti koja je nužna za profesionalnu biografiju. Velik broj poglavlja prezentirao je kao "istinu", a argumenti su često subjektivni bez pokazivanja razumijevanja za kontekst. Kroz knjigu saznajemo kako je autor stari obožavatelj Metallice koji naprosto ne može prijeći preko činjenice da je bend dramatično promijenio i usporio zvuk devedesetih. Većina će se složiti kako su osamdesete puno važnija dekada u studijskoj glazbi Metallice nego devedesete, ali način pisanja je svejedno neprofesionalan. Ponekad sam se osjećao kao da pokušava uvjeriti čitatelja kako je sve dobro što je bend napravio bilo direktna ili indirektna zasluga pokojnog Cliffa Burtona, pa čak i izvrsna djela koja su napravili nakon njegove pogibije. Zaključci su ponekad toliko bizarni da prelaze u domenu humora. Npr. "Da, mnogim izvođačima posao neprestanog stvaranja novih pjesama i albuma postaje rutina. Pa što? Snimanje pjesama nije teško poput rada u rudniku. Naštimavanje gitara nije teško poput kopanja rupa na cesti." Svaki komentar na ovakva rezoniranja je suvišan jer što ima teže na svijetu od fizičkog rada?

Drugi veliki nedostatak su beskonačne plahte teksta koji ne prestaje, a ne doprinosi sadržaju knjige kvalitetom. Autor je na puno mjesta za svaku pojedinu turneju Metallice nabrajao države, gradove, klubove gdje su svirali bez neke zanimljive ili pamtljive priče iza tih nastupa. Imao sam osjećaj čitanja popisa za kupovinu u trgovačkom centru koji je pretvoren u prozni tekst sa subjektima, predikatima i objektima. Potpuno je suvišno stavljati takve informacije u tekst ako ne postoji nešto specifično vezano za pojedine nastupe. Statistička opaska o posjetu dvadeset američkih saveznih država u sklopu turneje bi bila sasvim dovoljna. Ostao mi je dojam kako bi kvalitetni urednik sigurno detektirao te probleme, pravovremeno izbacio veliku količinu teksta, poboljšao narative i podigao kvalitetu knjige.

Nažalost, nemam pohvale za konkretno izdanje knjige i dizajn. Jako loše sa značajnim brojem pravopisnih pogrešaka, ali i prosječnim prijevodom. Lagao bih kad bih rekao da ponekad nisam imao dojam čitanja prijevoda s Google Translatea. Puno rečenica nije u duhu hrvatskog jezika i prevedeno je doslovno s engleskog. Nisam ljubitelj potrošačkog dizajna s dvije-tri kartice teksta po stranici jer jako otežava progres čime je agonija čitanja još veća. Iako sam čuo puno novih informacija, mislim da je bolje potražiti neke druge kvalitetnije biografije Metallice nego čitati ove frustracije.

Um punhado de miúdos decidiu formar uma banda e viver da música que criavam. Décadas depois, os Metallica não só escreveram o seu nome nos anais da música, como acabaram por se tornar uma verdadeira marca.

Esta biografia não oficial dos Metallica conta com tal designação não por ser realizada à revelia da banda, mas sim porque o seu autor decidiu manter-se num registo independente. Ian McIver quis, como parece ter sido seu apanágio de longa data, ter a liberdade de entrevistar as pessoas que quisesse, retirar dados de fontes à sua escolha e, enfim, dar a sua opinião pessoal sobre a música e os actos que envolveram os Metallica durante mais de trinta anos de carreira (considerando que a presente edição é de 2014).

Como qualquer biografia que se recomenda aos fãs dos visados, aqui não é excepção. Justice for All: A Verdade Sobre os Metallica é um livro longo, povoado de imensa informação, inclusive técnica, que não seria interessante a meros curiosos. Além disso, o livro vai abordando várias aspectos da indústria da música, enquadrando a evolução da cena musical desde os finais dos 70s, polvilhado com momentos importantes relativos a dezenas de outras bandas do glam rock ao death metal e, como não podia deixar de ser, alguns aspectos mais pessoais daqueles que foram fazendo parte dos Metallica.

Não era bem o livro que estava à espera. Não sou um mega fã dos Metallica. Nunca fui. Depois deste livro, acho que nunca o serei. É um livro biográfico, que vai até ao pormenor mais irrelevante sobre a banda e tudo à sua volta. Achei que algumas partes eram irrelevantes de se saber. Daí dizer que este livro é para mega fãs. No entanto, o livro apresentou-me toda a discografia dos Metallica (até 2014) e posso dizer que ainda saí a ganhar. Dou 4 estrelas porque o livro apesar de enfadonho tem algumas alturas muito interessantes, apresenta muitos pontos de vista quer de outros artistas quer de pessoas como nós, leitores, fãs, o que não faz dele um livro de factos incontestáveis, mas sim de opiniões. Acompanhamos a vida dos Metallica desde da sua adolescência até à sua meia idade, e acabamos por criar alguma afinidade com eles. Se fores um mega fã, recomendo, se não fores, acho que só te adianta ler se realmente tiveres interesse na banda.

Lata 80. zostały bardzo fajnie opisane i przedstawione, natomiast im dalej w historię zespołu, tym więcej opinii, a mniej faktów, ewentualnie sucho przytoczonych dat i miejsc koncertów. Jeśli chcesz przeczytać po raz kolejny że "Load", "Reload" i "St Anger" to beznadziejne, nudne, żałosne płyty - ta książka jest dla ciebie, jeśli słyszałeś te płyty, wyrobiłeś sobie o nich opinię i nie potrzebujesz znowu czytać o tym co ktoś sądzi na ten temat - wybierz inną biografię. Jeśli jesteś fanem zespołu, to pewnie wiesz już więcej niż zawiera książka, a jeśli nie, to wikipedia zespołu, członków i każdego z albumów zawiera więcej informacji niż ta biografia.
Dodatkowo forma numerowanych "mitów" typu "Mit 13: Metallica jest i zawsze była najlepszym heavymetalowym zespołem na świecie" świadczy moim zdaniem jedynie o niedojrzałości autora, który zatrzymał się na poziomie nastolatka próbującego udowodnić że jego ulubiony wykonawca jest "najlepszy". Tylko komu?

"[...] Metallica i jej fani zasługują na zapoznanie się z bardziej zrównoważonym i pozbawionym uprzedzeń obrazem, i taki - jestem szczerze przekonany - odmalowuję w niniejszej biografii. [...]
Możecie uważać, że momentami byłem dla Metalliki surowy, i może macie rację. Ale nie ma tu niezasłużonej krytyki. Jestem wielkim fanem Metalliki i wielbię ich niektóre rzeczy niemal do przesady - co oznacza, że jeśli zespół podjął w mojej opinii złą decyzję albo wydał muzykę, która była poniżej jego możliwości, to piszę o tym. Mam nadzieję, że zrozumiecie dlaczego".

No i to by było na tyle, kolejna biografia w stylu - Metallica skończyła się na Kill 'Em All. Ale przynajmniej autor nie udaje, że jest inaczej:

"Fani agresywnego, szybkiego metalu odrzucali je, uważali je [Load i Reload] za nudne i słabe (jeśli jeszcze się nie zorientowaliście, autor jest jednym z nich). Z drugiej strony była całkiem pokaźna rzesza słuchaczy, którym obie płyty ogromnie się podobały. Ludzi należących do tej drugiej grupy można określić jako: a) przeważnie młodszych niż członkowie pierwszej, b) bardziej otwartych, c) mniej zorientowanych w metalu i d) bardziej rozkochanych w Metallice i przekonanych, że "ich" zespół nie popełnia błędów, a jeśli już wykona zły ruch, będzie to Metallice wybaczone, bo przecież szuka nowych pomysłów i dojrzewa".

Tak. Właściwie tak. Łapię się pod każdy podpunkt tej listy. So fucking what!

Nie jestem jakąś fanką Load i Reload, ale nudzą mnie te wypociny panów wielkich autorów biografii Metalliki. A McIver postanowił naprawdę mnie wkurzyć:

"Album kończą trzy numery, które są wręcz boleśnie nijakie. "Thorn Within" zaczyna się nudno, przechodzi w potwornie bezbarwny riff oparty na bezsensownym zlepku dźwięków i roztapia się w morzu szarości. "Ronnie" jest po prostu okropny - drętwe, bezcelowe brzdąkanie, którego nawet dzisiaj nie potrafię wysłuchać do końca".

Biedny pan wielki autor. A co pan powiesz na to, że pana książka jest boleśnie nijaką, nudną i bezsensowną zbieraniną przypierdalania się do wszystkiego. Rozdziały o Load i Reload są po prostu okropne - drętwe, pełne bezsensownego dowalania się, bo tak trzeba jak się jest panem prawdziwym metalowcem. Ciężko mi było to skończyć, ale pewien SZACUNEK dla pana pracy mnie do tego zmusił.

A na koniec Hetfield:
"Mam nadzieję, że [fani] zrozumieją, gdzie się znajdujemy. Mam nadzieję, że podążą za nami. Mam nadzieję, że będą szczerzy w swoich opiniach, tak jak my jesteśmy w naszej muzyce. Oczywiście, niektórzy bardzo osobiście traktują Metallicę, co jest znakomite. Są fani, którzy lubią nas za szybkie rzeczy, są fani, którzy lubią nas za głębsze, bardziej melodyjne historie i są fani, którzy lubią nas za długie włosy".

The book has several references of Metallica discs, mentions places, particular actors that played an important role in the history of the band, it is a complete and informative text, the author’s critical position is interesting since it is not only based on praise the work of the band but also in studying analytically because and in what way the facts were developed, it may be that for some people who are not familiar with these references, they complicate the reading, however these are necessary. For fans of the band is a book that hooks and perfect to learn more about much of the myths circulating on the network, I consider it a coherent and orderly book, the sequence of the chapters allows you to understand the reading clearly to despite the large amount of information.

I really enjoy the book, it gives a look, not only to the history of the band but also to the musical context at that moment, of how rock music was taking shape in England with the NWOBHM, in San Francisco and in the angels with the scene Glam rock. Among the opposing positions, thrash metal was developing. This is interesting since it explains where these genres came from, which were not only due to fashion but because of a permanent social situation in society, the new generations of teenagers wanting more aggressive and different music. Despite this, I had to make a couple of pauses, there is a lot of information in the book, bands, names, great phrases, but this makes it very interesting and aroused my attention. It’s totally recommended for lovers of the band and the musical genre; Generally speaking it’s worth it.

Досадна и претенциозна - това са двете думи, с които ще опиша неоторизираната биография на Металика. Започнах я с голямо въодушевление и я завърших на чист инат.
Прекалено много внимание се отделя на уточняване на различните направления в хеви-метъла и това коя група къде се намира, нещо което винаги ми се е струвало пълна глупост, защото не вярвам, че в изкуството има такова животно като чист жанр. Това може и да е интересно за изследователите, които непременно държат да каталогизират всяка една група и песен, но за феновете винаги ще е важно само дали дадена музика те пали или отблъсква.
Странно ми беше решението на автора на няколко пъти да се връща към една и съща тема и изказвания, например делото Напстър, да сравнява отделните групи и коя от тях е по-по-най-траш. Една от най-отблъскващите глави беше тази за смъртта на Клиф Бъртън, където авторът първо с истинска топлота и симпатия говори за басиста на Металика, за шока и неверието на групата, станала свидетел на смъртта на свой колега и приятел и накрая, съвсем неочаквано завършва сухо и телеграфно (цитирам по памет): "Пристигна полицията и отнесе тялото на Бъртън. Местопроизшествието бе претърсено за улики. Шофьорът бе задържан до изясняване на обстоятелствата. Паспортът с номер "еди кой си", собственост на Бъртън, бе анулиран и изпратен на родителите му.". И толкова.
И последно: Джоел Макайвър е интервюирал над 70 човека, свързани по някакъв начин с Металика - колеги музиканти, приятели, роднини, сътрудници, музикални журналисти, фотографи, звукорежисьори и т.н. Идеята е била да получи възможно най-обективна представа за групата. Имам чувството, че в книгата са влезли най-скучните откъси от тези интервюта. Не научих много повече, отколкото бих научила, ако няколко дена чета статии за Металика и гледам клипове за тях в ЮТюб, което вероятно би било по-забавно.

I bought this book in 2004, at 14 years old. I did not read it until know. At 14, my favourite band was Metallica. And as a metal-teenager in Norway I was quite elitist about music, as I am sure many teenagers are. As a metal-35 year old woman now, I'm not quite as hard on other genres. (apart from Nu Metal iykyk) But reading this book brought me right back to the petty dissing of different bands and genres, and it made me snicker, shake my head and reminisce.

The writer is not shy about really disliking everything after the Black Album, and his remark on MTV made me laugh out loud. I've seen reviews mentioning that the first half of the book is the best part, and my guess is that the authors clear voice is the reason for this. It is not as apparent in the first part. The book definitely could have done with some better editing, as the mocking of Load/Reload and even some words and phrases gets a bit repetitive.

I made myself a playlist, and added every band(even the nu metal, pop and rap) mentioned as they came up, making sure the song I added matched with the period I was reading about. It was really nice, and made reading a thing to look forward to every day. Now, where do I find the summary of Metallicas career after St. Anger? That is where I fell off, and the book ends.

Це ж книга про Metallica, правда? Тож якщо трошки не літературною нічого страшного?
Насправді важко зрозуміти книга про Metallica чи про ставлення довбаного автора до гурту. Те видання, яке я прочитав закінчується початком 2000-х. І на думку Джоеля МакІвера після чорного альбому Ларс та компанія нічого вартого уваги не зробили. При чому якби міг, Джоель і чорний альбом відніс би до невдач гурту, але занадто вже добре він розійшовся. Особисто мені хотілось більше сухого викладення фактів про гурт і менше йобаних переживань МакІвера через відхід Metallica від коренів трешу.
Є питання і до перекладу та роботи редакторів російського видання. Місцями не б'ють дати. Ньюстед періодично фігурує як Джеймс. Місцями зрозуміло, що мова йде саме про басиста, але в одному фрагменті згадується розмова Джеймса з Джеймсом, і там вже ні хуя не ясно - хто кому що сказав - Ньюстед Хетфілду чи навпаки. Про друкарські помилки навіть не згадуватиму.

This is the 2nd book about Metallica that I've read so far and it wasn't disappointing. Reading the updated 2014 version, I found out new aspects behind more recent events. Even though I already knew some of them... I also found some typos in this ebook version, but nothing too bad.
Anyway, I appreciated the book the more I went on with it. I think the first part is confusing and this being a book about Metallica history, I understand the need for context and everything, but it was a bit confusing and slow to be honest. I appreciated the "reviews" of each album, because it's interesting knowing about someone else's opinion, but I think he made them too personal especially with the 90s albums, that are not as shitty as he portrays them (and I'm not the only one saying this). Other than that, it was a very enjoyable and thorough reading. I don't regret buying it and I think it's a book any Metallica fan should read along with Enter Night by Mick Wall. I give it 4 stars.

A book of two parts. The good part, up to about the Load albums, is excellent reading. The history of the band, the music scene at the time, the characters, their influences, etc. For those with a casual interest in the metal scene like myself, there are plenty of bands and events I didn't know about to go and explore and look into.

Then the book loses its way. A lot of space is devoted to the Loads (mostly the author trashing them), then comes the Napster business which also gets far too many pages. I get it, back when the book was written it was still a big issue, but in the times we live in now ... meh. I skipped the entire chapter devoted to that.

And it doesn't go much better from there as we delve into Some Kind of Monster and the book by that time has slowly morphed from pages filled with storytelling to pages filled with blocks of quotes from the band members.

So, solid 4 stars for the book up to the Loads, 2 stars for the rest from there. Let's call it an even 3.

Metallica lleva mas de 30 años de carrera, en los cuales han vivido en la pobreza, el rechazo de su ciudad, problemas familiares, personales, drogas, alcohol , y rock, mucho rock .

LO BUENO: Me gusto cuando hablan de la historia individual , de Lars en Dinamarca con su padre tenista , James y su sufrimiento por la muerte de su madre y su crianza Cristiana, de la muerte de uno de sus fundadores, la salida del bajista, triunfos, derrotas...todo en una espiral de crecimiento y vida en la que vemos como pasan paso a paso, para bien y para mal. Hay un grupo de fotografías que acompañan muy bien la lectura sin que se vean repetitivas.

LO MALO: Como en toda biografía, hay momentos que los datos duros que sientes que te sobrepasan y no te pueden importar lo mas mínimo.

Do you like Metallica ? If you do, you will dig the book. You don't like Metallica, but you are into reading&discovering artist by reading their biographies ? You will dig this book again. I tick both boxes, so I really enjoyed reading it. What comes with no surprise, it's more interesting in the beginning of the existence of than band rather than when they are already superstars, but it may be my personal preference, that I do like to find out when it all started, and what "made them" in the way. If you don't tick any of two previously mentioned boxes, you probably better to skip the book, or try to put some most famous Metallica songs on, and see if it gets you interested.

I love Metallica and while I have read a lot about them already, I'm always down to read more. This was very informative and revealing. In particular there were many details about Cliff and Napster of which I wasn't aware. However given the fact that it was written by a fan kind of skewed the perspective for me. The writing could have been more objective but to be honest it wasn't a dealbreaker. If you're a fan I would still recommend it. As a bonus I did get some good leads on some bands from the NWOBHM era which I truly enjoyed. I wound up discovering great new/old music. For that "extra" I give thanks to the author.

Muzykę zespołu znam od lat, ale nigdy wcześniej nie interesowałam się głębiej ich historią, aż do czasu zakupu tej książki.

Początek świetny - autor pisze z podziwem i uznaniem dla Metalliki, wiec tym bardziej nie rozumiem tej krytyki i cynizmu który pojawia się później. Byłam nastawiona na pełną historię zespołu, opisania kluczowych momentów a nie, dziecięcego wrecz, wytykania jak zła muzyka powstała po Czarnym Albumie. Ciężko się to czytało, niektóre opinie zdecydowanie powinny zostać w wersjach roboczych.
Na początku polecam, potem lepiej obejrzeć „Some Kind Of Monster”.

Проблемите с тази книга са безброй.

Първо, книгата е наситна зле написана, в повече от един аспект. Огромна част от думите и изреченията в тези над 400 сраници реално не казват нищо, а често са смислово неразбираеми, или пък авторът си противоречи сам на себе си в рамките на едно и също изречение. Феноменално огромна част от използваните цитати на музиканти и други преки свидетели на зараждането на Металика и сцената, които би трябвало да служат за придаване на жизнена образност и важни детайли от кухнята, са всъщност неносещи никаква информация, нито дори атмосфера възклицания от сорта на: "Гледах ги през 82-а, бяха страхотни, отвяха ми главата, човече!". В друг чест случай авторът анонсира нещо и заявява, че следващият цитат ще потвърди думите му, но цитатът казва всъщност точно обратното или пък нещо съвсем трето.

Но основният проблем в писането на автора е че в него няма грам обективност, а неговото лично мнение навсякъде е изказано като общовалиден факт. А мнението му, меко казано, е тесногръдо - отвъд тежката и бърза музика, всичко останало е боклук. В първата част Джоелчо затрупва с похвали Металика (до Черния албум), а във втората ги сравнява със земята, като епитети като "гадна", "тъпа" и "посредствена" придружават общо-взето всяка една тяхна песен от "Load" нататък. Очеизвадно е, че се касае за закостенял метъл, за който всичко, което няма траш елементи, е тъпо и посредствено, но имайки предвид, че поне половината творчество на Металика е такова, защо, по дяволите, си се хванал да пишеш книга за тях, пък и да ѝ слагаш помпозното заглавие "Истината за..."? Дочетох книгата само от любопитство докъде може да стигне с излагациите си горкият автор. И той действително се постара.

Второ, преводът на тази книга е абсолютно престъпление! Казвам го без грам сарказъм. За това, че съм дал 25 лв. за нещо, чийто превод го прави почти нечетимо, би трябвало да има реално законово наказание. Подобен превод може да направи така, че и най-хубавата книга да звучи безмерно зле. А при положение, че тази е далеч от най-хубавата, нещата стават направо катастрофални - на много места само благодарение на това, че знам английски, успявах да препдоложа как звучи даден израз в оригинал и да извлека смисъл от написаното. Но и това не е всичко, защото редакторската и коректорска работа не падат по-долу. Редакторът и коректорът (ако има такъв) явно никога не са чували за понятието "затваряща запетая", защото такава не беше налична в нито един случай. Множество липсващи букви и цели думи, съединени и разединени такива, запетаи дето не им е мястото (често по англисйката логика) и какво ли още не. Срам за вас издателство "Адикс"! Срам и безочие.

Дал съм две звезди само заради факта, че в първата част, когато се говори за самото основаване на бандата и преди това, книгата дава все пак интересна и рядка информация и рисува някаква интригуваща атмосфера, която обещава добро четиво, но обещанията се сриват след няма и 100 страници.

С две думи - аматьорски напът с лични мения на фен на група, която търси хоризонти за развитие, а авторът на книгата - оправдания за застиналостта си в миналото.

Да се избягва на всяка цена, дори и ако ви я подарят.

Джоэл Макайвер, известный музыкальный журналист, написал эту книгу, основываясь на интервью более чем семидесяти участников музыкальной индустрии всего мира в контексте их отношения к творчеству группы Metallica. Примерно одна треть повествования состоит из описания метал-сцены начала 80-х в Америке и мире. Достаточно скрупулезно, Макайвер рассказал о периоде становления групп обитающих в Лос-Анжелесе и Сан-Франциско. Не забыв указать, на кого и как повлияла Новая волна Британского хеви металла, и кто свернул с пути истинного (Mötley Crüe, Poison) отдав себя в руки коммерции и т.п.

Говоря о творчестве Metallica, автор особенно акцентирует внимание читателя на раннем этапе развития группы вплоть до Черного альбома, указывая на этот период как на плодотворный и прогрессивный (и в этом я с ним солидарен). Макайвер не скрывает своего позитивного отношения к первым трем дискам группы: «Kill 'Em All» , «Ride the Lightning» и «Master of Puppets». Соотнося их качество с присутствием в группе Бёртона. Автор огорчается по поводу отсутствия баса Ньюстеда на «…And Justice for All», указывая на то что, группа, на тот момент, не приняла его как полноправного участника, и Ульрих сводя альбом, убрал бас, заменив его «бочкой». Описывая коммерческий успех Черного альбома, не забывает о важности работы Боба Рока и его трениях с членами коллектива. Как настоящий металхед не принимает «Load» и «Reload», подчеркивая, что с двух этих альбомов и на одну пластинку песен не наберется, такие они слабые. «S & M», в принципе, одобряет, хоть и упоминает о смеси симфонического оркестра с рок-группой как о нелепости (Deep Purple «Concerto for Group and Orchestra»). Опять расстраивается от «St. Anger».

Как я и говорил, описания песен альбомов смешано с многочисленными интервью, порой противоречащими друг другу, но делающими более полным описание периодов взлета и падений Metallica. История о Napster и её вреде имиджу группы – отдельная глава. Лечение от алкоголизма Хетфилда, отсутствие Ульриха на Download из-за нервного истощения, уход Ньюстеда, поиски замены ему всё это и многое другое здесь есть. Поэтому книга довольно интересна, и не только для самых преданных поклонников коллектива. Не обошлось тут и без ошибок переводчиков, но судить строго о них не берусь, так как большого вреда они не принесли, в отличие от биографии Майлса Девиса, где Чака Хан это мужчина ))).
