The damn dirty crossover event you demanded! Following the events of the first Planet of the Apes film (1968), Dr. Zaius and General Ursus lead a small group of soldiers to the Forbidden Zone to destroy any remaining evidence of Taylor’s time among them. To their surprise, they discover...A KONG! Now they must venture to Skull Island with Cornelius and Zira to discover the truth, but they may not survive the deadliest journey of their lives!
The art was okay but some of the apes' faces looked too much alike. It was the chimpanzees that looked too much like each other and if it wasn't for their dialogue I wouldn't know who was who on some of the pages. I'm a big fan of The Planet of the Apes franchise but I don't know much about Kong lore so I can't say much on the Kong parts. Most of POTA characters acted about how I would expect them to accept for General Ursus on one panel. I think this was a weak start to the mini series but I'm hopeful the next issue will be better.
I am a huge fan of both the Planet of the Apes and King Kong movie franchises, so when I heard that they would both be joined in a comic book series, it was very intriguing for me! This first issue did not disappoint me either. The storyline began with the apes’ discovery of a gigantic gorilla lying dead near their location. They were startled as well as amazed to find that such a large one existed. This caused them to become very curious to know if more of this type of species exist and what this means for their community. They eventually traveled on an expedition to find out answers near Kenya, Africa. There they run into other large beasts and discover that something else even more dangerous may be on the horizon.
I really enjoyed this book. It is my very first introduction to both King Kong and the Planet of the Apes comic book franchises. It has made me interested in finding out more about these characters. I highly recommend this to other fans of either of the series. I have a feeling that when the characters clash, it will definitely be a sight to see!
Great art, interesting premise. After the first Planet of the Apes movie, and the escape of that human character, the apes find a giant gorilla near their city and struggle with the implications. They soon figure out where the giant gorilla came from (yes, this universe has a Skull Island, too) and endeavor to look into that place. They travel via boat with the giant ape's skull on the front. (They dissect this Kong! Yikes!) We also get a giant octopus sequence.
It's okay, and the art is fantastic, but the story doesn't really grab me in the first issue. I've read all the issues now, and I am just writing these in retrospect.
