A Green Magic

Rate this book
Kir doesn't want a relationship. Nor does he want to be dealing with magical attacks. Seems like he's in trouble on both counts. Mage Kir Davies has sworn off romance -- until he runs into Zach Kassel at his local climbing wall. But when dangerous magical emanations are showing up across his patch of London, getting involved with a non-mage is surely just too risky. Zach will admit that he was a little surprised to be attacked by semi-sentient mud on a first date, but for Kir, he's prepared to get over it. And to do his best to help — except for the bit where Kir seems to think that he's personally responsible for looking after everything and everyone all by himself. That's more than a little annoying. As the magical attacks get worse, Kir must find out what's happening, and learn to accept help from those around him -- before whatever is rising underground takes out him, Zach, and half of London. A Green Magic is a queer urban fantasy romance by Alix Hadden, featuring intriguing magic, engaging characters, and hot romance. Pick up A Green Magic today to discover Kir's world.

I really enjoyed this urban fantasy, I enjoyed the way that the magic worked, and I loved the relationships involved. I thought Kir's friendship with Ali was excellent and it was one of my favourite parts of the book. I also really enjoyed Kir's romance with Zach - it seemed so realistic to me, Kir overthinking things, doubting himself, struggling with the idea and having to conquer that. I loved that, hands down. I didn't get much of a sense of the greater context of the mages as a world in and of themselves, but I liked the secrecy and thought it intriguing that everyone was a lone agent and had a territory of their own so to speak. I'm intrigued enough by the world that I'd be interested to see more. This was sweet and rewarding, particularly on the emotional level and exactly what I needed at the time I read it.

A decent enough read but left too much on the table.
As an urban fantasy, it didn't really delve into the magic aspects of the user which was especially mystifying when there was apparently different specializations of magic available and some teasing references to lost magical history. Also, an odd thing where in one "had magic or didn't" but somehow a group of modern tweenage hippies were able to discern magical spots. More vague discussion of a coven structure, at least in London, that was hinted at being formal but was treated dismissively.
The resolution of the story involving the bad magic and instigator where only barely resolved while the completion of the mundane baddie was completely untouched.
Liked the three central characters well enough. Each was interesting, although Zach was by far the most well-handled and made the story more palatable.
Finally, there is quite a bit of UK slang and brand speak so if a reader is unfamiliar with modern British jargon there are bits of the story where the will be glossed over or require search trips which pulls away from the story.
Overall, there have been worst first efforts. Definitely an author that has some decent ideas that just needs a writing group and a stronger editor

Lightweight, but readable with some interesting characters.

No real world-building--we're just told that "some people have magic" and the MCs, and the book, dismiss magic as something of a hobby. There are vague references to some kind of group organization with the power to discipline but overall each "mage" seems to be free to do whatever they want. (They don't seem to want to do much. None seem to have much actual power, which may explain why magic is a hobby.)

Overall, this one just really didn't grab me. While there was a narrative about figuring out why mud-monsters were suddenly appearing, the real focus of the book was whether or not one MC was going to be able to quiet his hyperactive conscience enough to accept a relationship with another MC.

DNF 60% This was one of those books that had a lot of promise but killed itself with a thoroughly neurotic and obsessive main character. Unfortunately, while I was really interested in the magical mystery, found the sexy parts really sexy, and loved Zach, I just gave up at 60%. It's really a shame because I liked Kir. I felt like if I didn't know every thought that went through his head over and over again, that I would have really enjoyed him. He has a vulnerability and a sweetness that make him a good friend and a would normally make him a good lover. I had to feel sorry for Zach, though, because that poor, patient, long-suffering man got someone so broken and in some ways immature. Have you ever had a time when you're stressing over something and your thoughts just go around and around repeating incessantly? Well this is what Kir is like **all the time**. He is like an emo teenager and is so painfully socially awkward that it's excruciating. It wasn't just the feelings that got ruminated on either, but also the magic system. I felt like things were constantly over-explained without giving any new information. I kept thinking that the book could have been shortened by half just by cutting out all the redundancy. I may let the frustration die down and come back to finish it but for now I want something a little less obsessive. I liked enough about it to want to read something else by the same author, but this was just too frustrating.

I really LOVED this book! For me it is the perfect urban fantasy type of story & I was enjoying reading it so much that I made myself slow down because I truly didn't want the story to end. I also loved that most of the characters were gay, although I liked all of the characters, anyway & was beyond happy they weren't 'unbelievably' able to immediately deal perfectly with all of the issues that cropped up, the characters read a lot like 'real people', (magic etc, aside) & acted/reacted to situations accordingly, which I also found incredibly refreshing. This is a great book & I see it as a beginning of a fantastic series, it would be SO great as a tv series or film(s), too! I suggest keeping an eye on this author, they're definitely going to go far!

Warning: Vague spoilers.

Not much was explained about the magic side of things, nothing was explained about the glowing bad orange 'thing' (which somehow turned blue without explanation: editor call!) and we didn't find out the repercussions of the bad guy/drug elements.

Characters all needed a good smack over the head for their constant stupidity and refusal to ask for help until it was too late.
Basically this was a low level romance with some unrealized magical aspects thrown in. Disappointed.

The abrupt ending and loose ends ruined the whole story.
The writing itself wasn't bad, but there was too much focus on mundane details while big issues were left unsolved.
And if the author had done any research she would have known that no Iranian woman would name her child Kir or anything that sounds remotely like it as it is the vulgarer term for the male reproduction organ in Farsi (Persian language)
