HEATHER MARIE ADKINS writes too much but still too little. She also has too many cats, not enough tequila, and a torrid love affair with procrastination.
With a penchant for the paranormal, Heather spends her days fueled by coffee, Ancient Aliens, and true crime podcasts. She resides in an unfortunately-not-haunted Queen Anne in southern Indiana with a sarcastic husband who is entirely too dependent on puns.
When she’s not plotting her next book or herding felines, she's researching the spookier aspects of history for her podcast, Historically Weird. Find out more about her at heathermarieadkins.com.
One of the reasons I like sets is the ability to find new authors, not that I need to add anymore books to my TBR pile!! However, I still love to find new authors. This set really fit the bill. I have read two of the authors of the set and love them. After reading this set, I have about three others I'm going to add to my list. I found all of the stories save one to be well-written, good plot, and fun. The one I didn't really like was more of a matter of personal preference, not because it was bad. All-in-all, it's a great set, and really, how can you go wrong for less than a dollar?! Highly recommend! Thanks to an author for the e-copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
This is a bundle of Several fantasy writes. I read two stories out of this book, one by Andy Peloquin (The Forgotten Children) and one by A.K. Koonce (The Sixth Witch) "The Forgotten Children" - the story of 3 sibling with special powers trying to stay together after their parents were lost in a huge fire that killed hundreds of people. Even though she's only 17 years old. Elle is trying to keep herself and her twin brother protected and fed. She works two jobs and is always dragging them with her. Her brothers, Aiden and Kaden, are twins each having a special power. Everything is going smooth until a evil force starts looking for them. Great story, I'm not usually into short stories, but this was a good one. Andy Peloquin was able to tell the story, build his characters and still be a short story. "The Sixth Witch" - Harlow is a free spirit working as a bartender. One day she spies a strange man following her. In a strange moment, he touches her face and then everything goes wrong. She evicted from her apartment and she loses her job. When she goes to her apartment there are 5 people claiming to be witches with a book that stated she was the 6th witch they've been looking for. Everything changes for the better, but what is really going on. I really enjoyed this story also. AK Koonce, even though a different writer, shares some of the same qualities as Mr. Peloquin. Good Story, developed characters and a whole story.
I read a lot of paranormal, fantasy, horror, and science fiction. When I started reading this book… I had no idea what to expect. But I absolutely fell in love with these stories. There was something about every story that I enjoyed. This anthology has something for everyone whether you like dragons, fairies, magic, demons…. I could go on and on. I got so engulfed in each story that when it ended I went straight to Amazon.
Well done to all the authors involved in this amazing anthology. I will definitely read more of your books in the future. This has to be one of the best anthologies that I have read!
Fall of Magic is a very good collection of reads. Features sixteen all-new urban fantasy stories. Full of mythical creatures and magic these stories have drama, mystery, suspense and romance. Engaging and entertaining collection of reads. I am posting an honest review after reading an ARC copy of this collection.
This is one of the better anthologies I have gotten from Kindle Unlimited. Almost all of the stories were the first in a series and those that weren't were stand alone novellas with little background needed to follow along. Astonishingly enough for a KU anthology, none of the stories as far as I can determine are reprints or available elsewhere (a few original stories is common, but all new seems rare). There were a few stories that really stood out and made me want to read more and a few that I did not finish, but I did read almost all of them, which is unusual for me and anthologies and why I gave it a high rating even though most of the novellas were a solid three--entertaining and well-edited but not an instant TBR. The only bad thing is that since none of the stories seem to have separate Goodreads entries I can't leave individual reviews or track the ones I want to continue reading more installments of. Overall, a pretty successful collection of indie urban fantasy novellas.
This anthology had an interesting mix of stories that would appeal to any urban fantasy reader. My reviews are for the ones that appealed to me the most out of the set.
Not Aliens by A. L. Kessler A woman claiming aliens are bothering her turns up dead and the agent tasked with the original case now has to find the murderer. Definitely one of my favorites in this set, the story was fast-paced and engaging and the characters well developed. Abby Collins, an agent for the Paranormal Investigation Bureau, was easy to like with her take charge attitude and witch powers. I was also thrilled to discover more books in the series!
Saffron by Heather Marie Adkins Vengeance goddess Nemesis uses hand picked assassins to mete justice. I liked the premise of the story and found the ending intriguing enough to learn there is another story out .
Born by Dragon’s Blood by N. M. Howell Anybody with dragon blood gets death. A sorcerer and his wife have been hiding the fact that the wife and daughter have dragon blood. When their secret is exposed, things turn ugly. Anything with dragons is a good thing, and this was a good story! The characters, setting, and plot were well done considering the short length. I was happy to discover there’s a whole series out about the daughter, Andy.
The Girl in the Forest by Fionn Jameson A little girl in a red cloak is seen in the forest and bad things are predicted for the small town. I liked this story! A snarky cat, an archivist with a big decision, a sneaky wolf shifter, Fae, a banshee with a syndrome, and magic...lots of characters, good setting, and an interesting plot had me wishing for more!
Ghostly Magic by Devyn Jayse A ghost is haunting an apartment and a local shopkeeper with rune magic is asked to remove it. This story was cute and charming! The characters were amusing -Mateu, a witty gargoyle, was my fav-and the plot was on the light side with more humor than some of the other stories in the anthology.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book courtesy of Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
First let me state that I received a free copy of this book for an honest review. I always leave an honest review. If I don't like a story, I contact the author first & then with as much tact as possible I let the new reader know why.
Saffron by Heather Marie AdkiAdkins Excellent story. This is my first read with this author & I couldn't put it down. I can't wait to read the next story. This story is really interesting in that it's about Goddesses who use human conduits to seek vengece on psycho killers. I recommend this story. 5 Thumbs up
Burn by Shannon Eckrich This was a good story. I don't usually read stories about Goddesses & Gods, & this was that type of story. It was well written though, so, I still give 4 Thumbs up
A Spark in Shadow by Jessica Hawke Wow. I really enjoyed this story. This is my first time with this author. This story is about light & dark witches in a screwed up world. Claire is a feisty, stubborn young girl who, like all teens, thinks she's right & adults don't know anything. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up
Born by Dragons Blood by NM Howell I enjoyed this story very much. This is a powerful prequel to a Gr8 story. I can't wait to read the next one. So different from the regular "Dragon" stories. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up
The Girl in the Forest by Fionn Jameson Holy shiznet, I loved this story it's gr8. I hope there's more to come. I got so wrapped into it, that I got bummed when it ended. There's witches, a banshee, a grim, werewolf, ghosts, fae, & even a talking cat. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up
Ghostly Magic by Devyn Jayse This was a gr8 short story. This is my first read with this author, and it won't be my last. I like Careen she's a fun witch, I like Mateau he's a quirky gargoyle, and Natalie a psychic. Even the ghost, Rodrigo was good. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up
Not All Aliens by A. L. Kessler Another gr8 story. This is my first read with this author. This story was about PIB, which is similar to FBI except for being paranormal. It was a great read and I'm looking forward to reading more on this series. Gr8 writing. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up
The Sixth Witch by. A. K. Koonce Gr8 story. I truly enjoyed this. Harlow finally figured it out at the end and proved how strong she really was. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up
Destiny Reclaimed by Gaja J. Kos Wow, this was a gr8 story. No romance, but that's ok. At first I thought Boran was a woman. (Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm sexist). Any hoo, I loved it. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs Up
Twisted Fate by Joanna Mazurkiewcz I loved it. This story was gr8. But it made me cry, it was so sad. It also made me want to read "Hatched" to see what Fran will get herself into. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs Up
To Kill a God by Amber Morant Ok. I'm sorry. I really didn't like this story. It was well written, but not my cup of tea. Again, I'm sorry
Echoes of a Warlock by T. D. Moon Oh, I loved this story too. Again, another new author to me, & not my last time either. This story was amazing. The characters: Sarah, Camden, & Fidik had me smiling & crying with them. I so look forward to the next story in this series. I Recommend This. 5 thumbs up
Hell Hath No Fairy by Alex Owens Wow, I really liked this. Again, another new author to me, & not my last time either. This story was amazing. I am definitely going to read "Blood Chord" series and then follow up with the "Shadow Vampire" series. This story totally hooked me. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs Up
The Forgotten Children by Andy Peloquin I really enjoyed this story. It's so true how many children are forgotten and lost in the system. Elle is a strong young girl trying to not only survive, but caring for her twin younger brothers. For a 17 yr old she's had to grow up fast. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up
Beginnings & Endings by Patricia Thomas This story was a little weird even for my tastes. What I can say is it's got a lot of imagination. 4 Thumbs Up
The Mask of Winter's Magic by Dominika Waclawick Gr8 story. This is a short story, but a very interesting one. It leaves you wondering just who Kali really is. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs Up
This review is for The Forgotten Children by Andy Peloquin. I was given this book as a gift by the author Andy Peloquin. This review is my way of saying a big thank you to him. ☺
At the start of this story we meet a family consisting of 11 year old twin brothers, Kaden and Aiden, and older sister Elle, who is 17. Their lives are a grim struggle to survive each day. Living in fear of discovery by the child protection authorities, Elle makes every effort she can to affect an air of normalsy about them, so no one will realise that they are alone in the world.
However, their lives are anything but normal. With no parents to care for them since the accident which claimed both their lives; Elle must work hard to earn enough to feed and care for both her growing brothers, and herself. As if that was not difficult enough; her brothers both have unique things about them which make them more challenging to care for.
This is a wonderful story of courage against intense evil. A story of Elle fighting to save her brothers from the evil tracking them. It's about change, hope, and acceptance. I found it uplifting and a great read.
This is just a review of Andy Peloquin's short story in this collection. Another good story from Andy along the lines of Different not Damaged, this story is about a pair of gifted twins who at first seem to have medical conditions but are they in fact special powers! Can they defeat the nasty social worker who is trying to take them away from their sister? A good read that has different elements within.
I received a copy of this book from Booksprout and I gladly leave my review. This is a box set of 16 paranormal fantasy short stories. All of these stories were really good and I couldn’t pick a favourite because they were all as good as each other. If your a fan of fantasy then this box set is definitely for you and I recommend this book and it’s well worth the read.
This is a cracking series of stories, all set with feisty females & magic what’s not to like. I don’t usually read collections of stories like this but I am glad I did. Kept me interested to see what was coming next. Highly recommended.
... it most definitely needs another pass under a proofreader's eyes as there are not only many grammatical errors but numerous instances where words are not only out of sequence - as if being translated from another language and just copied and pasted directly from the translator and not given another thought :/ - but oftentimes just not there: not just interrupting the flow of the story but bringing it to a screeching halt while your brain tries to figure out what the author was trying to say ... Plot, storyline, characters? - A solid 5 Stars! Grammar, flow? - I'll be generous giving it 2 stars ...
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I found some of the stories to be good others, some to be just okay and others not at all worth reading. Hench the 3 1/2 stars. I did discover a few new authors I plan to read more from so to me that makes the book worth getting.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. This was a paranormal anthology that had something for everyone who loved paranormal. Romance, witches, demons, gods, and goddesses alike in this book made it a fast and fun read. I loved the selection and cannot wait to read more from these authors.
rcvd an advanced reader copy for giving my two cents. a collection of stories or of chapters; some really good and eye catching while other didnt leave much to the imagination and left me bored. I enjoyed "Hell Hath No Fairy" by Alex Owens where Claire is a vamp/witch combo who is visited by her bffs King of Fae father to find Cass. Not only does she have to deal with him but her ex-husband, a witchling daughter, vamps who are linked to her oh giving tattoos with a spell gone bad. now onto the chase to find cass! I also enjoyed "Echos of a Warlock" by TD Moon where Camden is being hunted by an elf for his knowledge and dies bc of it but not before leaving clues. enter his bff Sarah...devastated and hurt. she knows smtg is a miss with Camdens death and decides to check it out once the cops are done. she follows her gut and in the garden a golum emerges...massive thing with blue eyes and Fidek is his name. camden made him and asked him to give a message to Sarah. bad guys pop up when fidek is trying to relay the msg. once safe, the golum informs sarah of the msg...but what does it mean? camden and his quirks. after much thought, sarah determines the numbers is a storage locked. once the item is retrieved, a witch and her minions are upon them. whats in the box that has ppl after her and killed her best friend. more puzzles, more mysteries and more secrets than answers. can sarah find the answers to the clues camden left her??
Oh what a ride, I was so enthralled! Each book had a strong storyline. Any kind of people (said loosely), with lots of bad guys driven to extinguish your life and the lives of your friends. The choice of stories in this book are put together wonderful. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. Brilliant writing and spellbinding tales. I loved it! I received a complimentary copy of this book.
This is a great set of stories that will appeal to any fan of urban fantasy. Each story really offered an interesting storyline with lots of twists and surprises. I love to read about demons and other magic users and this one offered some unique stories.
I haven't yet read every single story in this anthology 'Fall of Magic' but what I have read has been very good and what a bargain 16 stories for 99p what's not to love? If you enjoy Urban Fantasy then I can definitely recommend this anthology and if you don't know all the authors it's a great and cheap way to be introduced to new authors. Well worth the five stars allocated.
A marvelous collection of stories. The heroines are sassy and the book is filled with magic. The reader will be engaged throughout the book. I voluntarily read an ARC and this is my honest review.
I am a huge urban fantasy fan, so I was intrigued by this anthology. Unfortunately, the intrigue ended fairly quickly and it never really came back. Of the stories, there were 4 that I truly felt interested/invested in - the rest were just ok, and there was one that was truly terrible. I do realize that anthologies can be a very mixed bag, but I have to say that this seemed even more so than usual.
I love anthologies, the possibilities for new books and series as well as new authors to follow. This particular anthology was great. I found new series and authors to read. Some stories were fantastic and I wanted to read more of them, some were great but not something I'll probably reread. A big thank you to all the authors for such a wonderful story time.
Twisted fate by Joanna Mazurkiewicz Interesting prequel tona New series. There is Magic, strange illness, other relams . It was too short, and duebtonit 3 stars. Longer would get better rating!
