The autobiography of the award-winning actress describes her loving relationship with her husband and family, the devastating impact of his death, and her long and successful career, with anecdotes about such celebrities as Joan Crawford and the Marx brothers
this lady had a great delivery, and interviewed real well on an old tv rerun, so i thought the book would be clever and interesting. her early life and career were very interesting, and she claims she thought of some of the very clever lines she delivered in movies. the later part of the later part of the book was all about her family life and there wasn't much cleverness indicated here.
She does a great job of maintaining her film/tv persona's voice and I loved her fun stories from the early film days. It got a little like a neverending travelog about halfway through so I skimmed from that point on. I prefer to see places in person instead of read about them. However, it does make one sad that there were all these great theater performances (Hello Dolly, Auntie Mame) that can never be revisited. I mean, Roz Russell was great but it would be fun to compare the two.
Eve Arden’s memoir was very interesting and you learned quite a bit about her starting the theater. It was also interesting to hear about her family but it was a little choppy. There were pages and pages of one subject and then bam it jumped ahead by years. I liked it but I also wish it had been a little more in depth and a little less surface.
I love Eve Arden! She shows that a person can change to accomplish what they really want. I cannot recommend this highly enough. I need to reread this as it has been many years since I read it.
