THE WAR OF THE VAMPIRES Khronos has taken the Tanti, the mortal descendants of the Oldest Living Vampire. He commands a vast army, and powers unrivaled by any immortal. He is the father of all vampires. Yet somehow Gon must find a way to challenge his ruthless foe, and all the terrifying powers his enemy can muster, for it is not just the fate of his mortal bloodline that hangs in the balance... but the very fate of mankind itself! THE DEATH OF THE OLDEST LIVING VAMPIRE Meanwhile, in present day Germany, Gon has finished relating the tale of the first vampire war to his fledgling Lukas Jaeger. The time has come. He is ready to die. But unbeknownst to him, a conclave of his most beloved companions have conspired to interfere with his plans. Can they convince the Oldest Living Vampire to give up his schemes, or will Gon allow his vicious new protege to bring his life to an end? THE OLDEST LIVING VAMPIRE UNLEASHED is the sixth volume in the best selling Oldest Living Vampire Saga and the final installment of the Prehistoric Cycle. Nothing will ever be the same! An indie bestseller since its debut in 2010, The Oldest Living Vampire Saga has captivated readers with its unique take on the vampire mythos, its lush portrayal of the prehistoric world, and its shocking violence and sensuality.
Born in Southern Illinois, Joseph was raised in a very liberal home environment and was exposed at an early age to the classic underground comic book scene of the sixties and seventies, as well as European graphic novels by artists like Moebius, Enki Bilal and Milo Manara. At age 9, he was reading Tolkien and Stephen King. He wrote his first novella at age 10. If you want to read the same old formulaic pop lit, don't bother with Joseph's fiction. The novels of Joseph Duncan are challenging, subversive and fantastical, merging genres and pushing the boundaries of propriety and good taste. If you have an aversion to dark subject matter, gratuitous sex and extreme violence, stay far away from Joseph's books. Far. Far. Away!

I have now completed this series of books. (Although I have seen there are two more books which link to this series, which I may have to investigate at a later date).
This story begins much like the way book five began with a new character, another vampire who was sired by Gon and who is part of the posse determined to stop him ending himself. We get her backstory, how she became a vampire and her part in Gon’s story, as part of the then timeline. Then we switch to Gon and Lukas who have arrived at the valley where Gon was born as a human and where he wants to die. Lukas asks him to complete his tale and we get the conclusion to the then timeline story. The story complete Lukas begins to kill Gon and the other vampires arrive to stop him. Not to give too much away, things don’t go quite as planned for any of them. It is an interesting twist and the somewhat surprising evolutionary ramifications of Gon’s actions are brought home to him. The ending ultimately has a powerful message and was a satisfying conclusion to the series.
This was a highly entertaining series of books with plenty of historical content detailing how humans have evolved (or not) over the years. A compelling dual timeline story and an honest and sometimes sobering commentary on how we (humans) as a species behave, and how it isn’t any different from that of mythical fantasy monsters and in some ways is worse as we are supposed to possess empathy, understanding and humanity. It was a highly original take on vampires, their origins and how vampires are sired. It was an intelligently written series with the right balance of social commentary and storytelling which on the whole I would thoroughly recommend to anyone with a love of Fantasy and in particular Vampire stories.
I came to find this series by a fluke, and have enjoyed every minute of the whole thing. The spin that Joseph Duncan puts on the vampire, from transformation to feelings and emotions and to relationships and beyond is absolutely absorbing. He really knows how to get the reader wanting to know Gon and his cohorts, their lives, their experiences, their thoughts. He is also great at being able to put you right where the character is through his descriptions of an area or place or time. The thing that won me over the most is the prehistoric era it starts in and revisits throughout. I love reading prehistoric stories, it really let's my mind escape to a time when we as humans had to just live day to day, and not just go through life with the distractions of today's world.I
Of course, I saw the message coming. But I loved it just the same. Mr. Duncan is indeed a gifted writer. He even (paraphrasing) notes it himself. That is the true magic of a gifted writer. The ability to weave such a great tale that the listener/reader does not want you to stop. That is certainly the case with The Oldest Living Vampire Tales. I tore through them as I have been ill with mono. Reading in a feverish delirium, yet knowing good literature when I see it. Of course getting back to the message, gather your tribe, live, love, and take care of them.
Good but not great ending to the oldest living vampire saga?
I’m unsure if this is the end of Gon’s stories about himself but the whole saga was enjoyable, I wasn’t particulary piqued with curiosity the whole saga but it still made me buy the next book and the next, and on and on.....highly recommended for the “fledging” vampire novel readers, for the “ancient” vampire novel readers it’d be just a good read.
Joseph is an artist in his writing. This vampire saga has been so well researched & the depth of character to each of the vampires leaves as always me wanting more. Maybe joseph will do a vampire.chronical series like Anne Rice did with her other vampire characteer. How wonderful that would be....
I wanted Gon to be with his ancestors, he sounds like an angst filled teen or a house wife without Sanex I read the story in small increments because I didn't want the it to end. When he came back it was somewhat disappointing. After thirty thousand years there are plenty of stories to be told.
What a fantastic series to read enjoy and fantasize with. A great ending which I find so totally enjoyable because so often there is much lacking at the end! This author has shown unbelievable talent and skill in his first set of books. I hope there will be many more just as captivating stories to be told in his imagination.
The entire series is captivating, fast paced, and well written. I love the way the author has given vampire novels a fresh, different take than what is usually expected in this genre. I couldn't read this series fast enough, each book as incredible as the last!
This series is a story that draws you in! The characters are well written and you really feel for them! It's hard to put them down! I really recommend this series, they're worthy of your time!
This is a great finale? Hope that there is more to come. This series isn’t just about adventure and history, it’s about humanity and all it’s aspects. Enjoy the adventure!
I was looking for a follow up to the Anne Rice’s Lestat series and came upon Joseph Duncan and his Oldest Living Vampire Series. I LOVED READING THEM. The different take on vampirism and the books he wrote were so refreshing. I wish he would continue the series.
What a fantastic story! I binged and read the last three books in the series and one side book! I was absolutely enthralled with the entire series! One of the absolute best vampyre takes I have ever read in my life! Joseph Duncan is truly the master of a brilliantly written, unique, individual, originally vampyre take that you will ever read. Just do yourself a favor and buy the entire series and binge read one after another!! Superbly done!! I would love to see this made into a movie or two!!
