When my best friend Iris goes missing, my entire life grinds to a halt. Forget school. Forget familial obligations. Everything about me ceases to matter anymore. Because I have exactly one hour to save her life.
And I’m already ten minutes in.

It is a short and quite entertaining read, however, I could not fully enjoy it because the contradiction between the ages of the characters, their dialogues and the situations threw me off. It was implied that both Iris and Hadley were fourteen and then Finn seems older. It also seemed like the reading was a series prequel and felt like unfinished business.
I can't even finish the first chapter of this book because of all the typos! I am used to Kindle unlimited books having some mistakes this book has so many in the first chapter that I can't even get to the end of the first chapter. I skipped to the end of the book just to write this review before deleting the book.
This story was more developed than I expected for such a short story. It has a great potential for the start of a new series. Unique and quirky. Four glittery stars.
The main vampire wants to “cure” Hadley of an aspect of her supernatural inheritance so she can’t interfere in his plans. No one ever explains why he doesn’t just kill her, since we find out he’s killed at least one other in furtherance of his plans. It’s also never explained why, if Hadley was just going to trade herself for Iris as demanded, she had to do a shapeshifting spell with Finn first (except as a convenient way to give them the shapeshifting/mind-talking powers for later). It’s never explained how Finn knows so much about Hadley’s birth father (among other things). Events tend to be detailed a little matter-of-factly for my taste. We’re given no idea of how Hadley manages to disappear to the vampires without her parents reporting her missing. Also, while this book is billed as a paranormal romance, the only romance is Hadley thinking Finn looks cute; there isn’t enough time nor detail for more than that.
The worldbuilding is intriguing. I’m not yet clear on what sort of supernatural abilities allow Hadley to use spells and read tea leaves, but that’s a neat hook. Hadley’s supernatural inheritance should certainly make for more interesting stories.
This story doesn’t stand alone all that well–too much information missing for that–but it did intrigue me.
A kidnapped girl, a teenage witch who reads tea leaves, a brave young spell-maker, and a whole nest o'vampires... A good mix for a short story that's never short on tension.
Hadley does talk a bit grown up for her 14 years and things will test you suspension of disbelief if you're outside of the YA/NA target age but it's a fast and entertaining read. Well written with great pacing and enough scene setting to make sure the paranormal feels real even in such a short space of time.
This was definitely a quick and funny read, but I can’t give it more than 1 star.
It was quick, maybe too quick for its own good. The magic system was interesting, but maybe too convenient at some times. I liked the relationship between the protagonist and the love interest, but it felt waaay too rushed. The protagonist apparently didn’t know anything about vampires, but somehow, miraculously, managed to fight against a horde of them?? I dunno, I can’t buy it. Also, we're supposed to believe the protagonist's relationship with her best friend was the strongest bond she ever had, but the best friend barely appears in the story. She was just a mere device for the protagonist to do whatever great deeds she had to do. I just wish the side characters had a little bit more of agency.
Overall, if you’re just looking for something fun and quick, I kinda recommend this book.
This seems like a prequel novella to the main series and low on the PNR
Although I enjoyed the style of writing and it was an interesting 60-min read, it read like a prequel novella or first sample chapter to a series, not a book in its own right. Hadley’s character is fleshed out nicely (as opposed to Iris, her best 14yo friend) and the romance will probably happen between her and Finn (who’s old enough to be left tending a shop), but nothing happens in this prequel on the PNR side.
Recommended for those who love to read sample chapters or short prequels or prologues before delving into a new YA series.
An apt T&YA paranormal & urban fantasy romance. Hadley has a problem: her best and only friend, Iris, will be killed if she doesn't surrender within an hour. To whom? She doesn't know. Where? She doesn't know. And so on. This is a story of discovery. Something that she is well adapted to. While the story is good, it does seem to be a bit simplistic. Still, it is worth reading.
Definitely a cute story. A bit gory during o e of the scenes but not over the top. Language and sexually clean.i liked the character and while they didn't get a it of screen time i like the supporting cast too. And the author leaves the ending open enough to continue the story if she chose to which i hope she does.
It was a good story but it was too short. I want to know more like how do her parents take it that she's immortal? Does she ever meet her birth mother aka the vampire queen? Plus there were a lot of misspellings and on one page the author started a paragraph in the middle of a thought when a new paragraph is used when starting a new thought.
Cute and quick. Leaves room to create a lengthier beginning and an adventure filled lengthier end full of intrigue, friendship and hidden truths. And should the story last long enough for Hadley to grow up, it could nurture a budding romance with Finn.
This short read just didn't capture my interest. The characters were simply blah. That doesn't mean you shouldn't read as though I didn't enjoy it, it doesn't mean you won't either.
It would be so nice to be a witch. I could do things no one else can do. Hadley can do spells within seconds. She can find out from her spells and it helps with what she needs.
As mentioned in the other reviews, spelling and grammar mistakes. Detail was lacking in areas, however this was still an enjoyable short read. I feel that if the author wished this book to be longer, it could have been.
This story is wonderful but all the typos took away from the enjoyment of the story. I would highly recommend the book if not for all the typos wrecking my enjoyment of it.
The Vampire Queen by Veronica Shade – If that was 100 pages longer it would have been a very cool first book in a series, but it felt really rushed. I still have so many questions! But I did enjoy it! Happy Reading!
