Aha! Found it at last. I could not remember the title of this although I knew it had something to do with a city and winter. I thought the author's name began with an "E," and right I was.
Anyway, I loved this one. It is the story of a young boy's day home from school due to a snow storm. Schick's soft touch with the illustrations correspond perfectly with the slow-pace of the boy's lazy day at home. Jimmy's parents help him pass the time with all sorts of creative ideas. My favorite was the indoor picnic where they enjoy lunch seated upon pillows and a sheet spread across the floor. This gem verifies that fun for a child need to involve money or glitz, it's really time and thought that are the most meaningful.

A lovely book describing winter in the city and a day at home from a child's point of view. Delightful.
