Sometimes spelled Cāṇakya or Kauṭilya or Vishnugupta

Chanakya was an Indian teacher, philosopher, economist, jurist and royal advisor. Many regard Chanakya as a great thinker and diplomat. Some Indian nationalists even argue that he is one of the earliest people to envisage an united India spanning the entire subcontinent. Originally a professor of economics and political science at the ancient university of Takshashila, Chanakya managed the first Mauryan emperor Chandragupta's rise to power at a young age. Consequently, he is widely credited as being instrumental in establishing the Maurya Empire. Chanakya served as the chief advisor to both emperors Chandragupta and his son Bindusara.

Two books are attributed to Chanakya: Arthashastra and Chanakya Niti. The Arthashastra discusses monetary and fiscal policies, welfare, international relations, and war strategies in detail. The text also outlines the duties of a ruler. Chanakya Niti is a collection of aphorisms, said to be selected by Chanakya from the various shastras. Some consider these works as evidence that Chanakya pioneered the field of political science and economics in India, and that his work was an important precursor to classical economics. His writings were lost near the end of the Gupta Empire, then were rediscovered in 1915, and have since grown in popularity.

If you can, somehow, get your hands on a quality edition with original (or even extracts) Sanskrit text and a quality translation, you are lucky. Chanakya Neeti is your everyday companion. It has the vision of a great minister, politician, and wise Brahman who cared for the country, society, and dignity of himself and his fellow human beings irrespective of the vast differences. These books are rare. Indian ancient history has much to offer. Gather as much as we can... All the best!

“Peoples happiness should be King’s happiness. Welfare of people is King’s welfare. For a king, there is no task which is only individualistic and pleasurable to him only. It is king’s utmost duty to look after progress and welfare of people of his country.”

Kautilya (also known as Chanakya aka Vishnugupt, c. 350-275 BCE) was an Indian statesman and philosopher, chief advisor and Prime Minister of the Indian Emperor Chandragupta, the first ruler of the Mauryan Empire. Kautilya belonged to the Brahmin caste (the priestly class), he was originally from Northern India and a professor of political science and economics at the University of Taxila. He was fully knowledgeable concerning the Vedas literature and it is also believed that he might have had some knowledge of Zoroastrianism. He mentored Chandra Gupta Maura (a Shudra Low caste person) to become king. With Chandra Gupta he repelled the invasion of Greeks and also dethroned Dhananand.

This is the English translation of his Chankya Neeti. First the shloka is given in Sanskrit, then it is written in roman and finally the English translation is given. Some explanation is also given in brackets if required. The shlokas given here are for practical use in statecraft. These are not theoretical. This is proven by the historical facts that how he defeated the mighty Nandas. Some examples are reproduced below:

1. Without good assistance a king can take no right decisions.
2. Courage alone is not enough to achieve success in one’s mission.
3. An irritable or foul tempered cow is better than having thousand dogs.
4. One’s wisdom fails at the onset of the evil days.

Although the teachings are excellent some have become outdated. Some of these are anti Dalit and sexist in today’s context. Some of those may be correct when written but lost relevance in today’s age. Some examples:

1. A woman, by nature, is liar, courageous, deceitful, foolish, greedy, impious and cruel. These are innate attributes of a woman.
2. Women have a knack of talking to one man, casting an askew glance at other and loving secretly a third man. They can’t devotedly love just one man.
3. The power of Brahmans is knowledge, of the king his army, of the trader class their wealth and of the menial class their service ability. [Chankya asserts Manu]

So, this Neeti is mixed bag in present context. It should not be followed verbatim and in toto, but in small doses. We should use our wisdom and use it as per the changed times wherever required. There are many printing mistakes and at some places there are boxes instead of words. A better proof reading was required. Translation could have been better.

4/5 stars.

Chanakya Neeti: With complete sutras is a scriptural narrative of sayings/slokas from one of the great philosopher of all time, Chanakya man behind Chandra Gupta Maurya first mauryan emperor. Chanakya played huge role in building this empire by teaching and assisting King chandra gupta from childhood. He is well known for his knowledges in various fields other than governering like philosophy, teaching, jurist and economist.

This novel was divided into six parts for understanding of readers each part describing various aspects of life and it's even relatable to today's happenings. All the aphorisms are described in a detailed manner with simple english and sutras were in sanskrit.

It was edited well to make the readers connect easily but some of them are out dated. I mean it can't suits for upto date. Some of them which shows the superiority of brahmins as higher caste, some shows the superiority of men over women.

Overall, it is a good book to read and some of his thoughts were still fresh which can make you feel wow and a pure form of inspiration.

Aditya Narayan Dhairyasgeel Haksar, a renowned translator of Sanskrit classics, fondly calls this volume 'a labor of love' of him. My regards to him for letting us, the modern reader, catch a glimpse of the wisdom of Chanakya.

While the Vedas and Upanishads propound the philosophy of spiritual pursuit, Chanakya's voice steered to the worldly affairs. It was a refreshing diversion from the largely inaccessible school of thought among the common man. Instead of higher questions about life, birth, and existence, Chanakya pointed his arrow at the circle of the domestic life and hit it where the common man would relate, realise, and eventually follow.

This volume compiles some of his guidelines for the householders - the participants of everyday life. They deal with family, friends, enemies, wealth, merits of gaining knowledge, and the like. With a simple hand that integrated deep meaning, Chanakya breathes fire of truth into these straightforward lines.

"As gold is tested in four ways -
by friction, scratches, heat, and sound - so men too need to be examined:
for their merit and character,
for work and for renunciation"

"There are two fruits like nectar
on this worldly poison tree,
they are: pleasure in poetry,
and good people's company."

The teachings stood the test of time. Its relevance is strong, even after 2000 years. At one point, Haksar writes,
"It was a patriarchal society that recognized caste but did not always link it to occupation. It respected women and also their traditional roles. It also took note of different kinds of people's contacts with each other, their interactions with the government, whether helpful or troublesome, as well as the presence of foreigners. "

The man who trained Chandragupta Maurya, the founding mind of the great Mauryan Empire in India in the 4th Century BC, was Chanakya. The man whose verse aphorisms traveled to the literature of Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Indonesia was Chanakya. Transcending the limits of time and terrain, the man whose voice still resounds across the cultural landscape of the country is Chanakya. This is a gift to today's reader by a wisdom that's as alive as is ancient.

Well. Holding this book in my hand, i remembered the television show of chanakya, and the cover of the book resembled exactly the same. The cover is catchy and bright. The philosophy lovers will anyway grab the book.
The blurb is short, crisp and clear cut on what the book is based.
The book is written in simple language. The sholkas are translated to english and explained them wisely. Sometimes, awestruck with the theme of understanding in depth. Since, philosophy is my thing, i could relate few or more things deeply.
The life seems so hard, unsatisfying, difficult to deal with, but you always have easy options to deal with.
The book also took me to school days where we had chapters, lessons, and morals about the king, kingdom, ministers, wise people, foolish ones, and smart advisor too.

The book is pretty simple, yet you will have to have time in understanding the same in depth to understand the same.

I would rate 4/5

I picked this up with a lot of anticipation. After all it was the great work of Chanakya . But I was utterly disappointed . Most of the advice is not relevant to the current times . It also has very strong references to the Indian caste system which would make a lot of folks uncomfortable . The views on women would absolutely be offensive to the modern women. The only takeaway from the book is that one should continuously strive to acquire knowledge ( and that is anyway not a big secret ) . I don't recommend this book for any audience .

Chanakya Neeti With Complete Sutras from Grapevine comes at a very right time. The book carries a bundle of wisdom hailing from the age-old various shastras. Chanakya compiled the book originally by picking the most valuable pieces of wisdom from various Shastras keeping in mind some key disciplines of life like morality, ethics, governance, etc. Chanakya, as we all know was a great thinker, leader, Mentor, educator, strategist, teacher, economist, philosopher, advisor, jurist, and diplomat. He is among the first initiators towards creating a united India. It was his dream to create a grand India that he assisted Mauryan emperor Chandragupta Maurya in his rise to power. There are 570 sutras or learning from Chanakya in the second section of the book. The first section comprises of Chanakya Neeti in 5 classifications. These 5 classifications are - The Individual, Society, Good Company, General Observations, and Miscellaneous.

The book Chanakya Neeti is not a one time read. Since it is a book of learning and wisdom, you can read it again and again in any sequence starting from any page. Like, one of the Chanakya Neeti says teaching a dunce pupil, associating with melancholic persons, or supporting a vile woman is a sure invitation to grief and pain. All three activities will be a sheer waste of energy, efforts, and fame. Another Neeti is a gem in terms of logic and knowledge.

Chanakya Neeti Is A Great Source Of Knowledge. In fact, this particular Chanakya Neeti says you need to be alone at the time of worship. Two people if study together progresses well. Three persons are important for singing. Four persons need to be there while going out. Five people together can work optimally in a field. Finally, in a war, you require many persons. Every Neeti and Sutra by Chanakya is directly applicable to life and therefore is a great source of learning for everyone.

Chanakya was an Indian teacher, philosopher, economist, jurist and royal advisor, who has authored the ancient Indian political treatise, the Arthashastra. Being the pioneer of the field of political science and economics in India, his work is thought as an important precursor to classical economics. His works were lost near the end of the Gupta Empire and not discovered until the early twentieth century. (as ref.)
And with this little information and the introduction given in the book we will come to know the greatness of Chanakya and the power of his words.
From the first page to the last, the book is essentially packed with a complete enlightenment that will be needed for the mankind. It is a wonder that how a man is able to think of something that can be applied in the practical life even after decades. The book opens with praising the lord, like any other great books in Tamil and goes ahead with explaining every relatable and existing thing in the world.
Being completely packed with Sutras, you can just open any random page of the book at any odd hour and the book will readily light something positive directly into your mind and you will indeed feel your soul getting enriched after reading the complete book. This book will help you to become and act more practical, knowledgeable and what not!

If you have not read chanakya's work before and you are looking for an easy book to read this is one of them which will help you understand Chanakya's neeti in short. The cover is of the famous look of Chanakyas tilak and hairdo. Sanskrit scriptures are also given in the cover itself. The book consists of aphorisms by chanakya on life, love, war and certain principles he used to follow. The sanskrit transcriptures are given and then it is explained in english which can be understood very easily. His sutras can be taken into daily life and working as well. Cover is beautiful.
Title is apt & reassuringly true.
It has been aptly & cleverly selected according to the virtues imparted via the sutras.
The book is divided into 6 parts, 5 parts pertaining to life & the last part comprise the sutras.
Each section again comprises of individual responsibility, benefits, wisdom, information distributed evenly across the book. Each subsection discusses in details as to how it can be implemented in our day-to-day lives.
Various necessary components of life have been explained in simple way, in a simple manner. The language chosen is as simple.
At first, the Veda-shastra annotation has been provided in Sanskrit. Followed by the English font which can be read (for those who can't read hindi or sanskrit).
At last, but certainly not the least, the meaning of the text has been extracted, extrapolated & explained in English. It enables the reader to understand things in a simple & easy way.
The method in which the entire book has been depicted, translated & has been presented to the readers is really useful & good.
A really good book for all the readers, especially the people who tend to study (research purposes) in commerce, finance or economics.

OK read.

I consider it to be an ok read. Wisdom wise, it has some things you can adopt in your life. While reading, always be cautious that shlokas have been written in a particular time and age. This means they are not completely true for modern age. Specially things on women. From modern standards they are downright offensive. But read with open mind and rather than taking things literally, take them scientifically analyze them and be aware of context. Plus, I felt it would be better if somethings were direct literal translation and open for reader's interpretation rather there is a lot of writer's own interpretation. Also, a lot of typos.

Chanakya neeti is a collection of aphorisms dealing with various practical aspects of life . Chanakya aka Kautilya was not only a thinker but also one of the best philosophers the world can ever witness. This book contains selected gems from different shastras.

This book contains the english translations of the original chanakya neeti. The cover of the book is simple yet catchy . The title of the book is very apt . The blurb is short and crisp and gives readers an insight to the different themes discussed in the book like ethics, morality including some general observations.

The best part about the book it that it has explained various aspects of life in the simplest possible manner. All the sholks are first written in sanskrit and then in english . The translation of each slok is very properly defined in lucid language.

Though most of the shloks still find relevance in the mordern world, it cannot be said that it is completely relevant today as it was at the time it was written. There were few things which i found outdated as per today's culture and norms. Also there were few complex shloks whose translation was not satisfactory. A better and in-depth explaination was required at some places.

Overall a good read to understand and follow our roots.

A collection of aphorisms written by Chanakya, an ancient Indian teacher, author, strategist, philosopher, economist, jurist, and royal advisor, who lived about 2,300-2,400 years ago. Though generally a decent read, the "aphorisms" are a tad outdated by 2022 standards, a few of them even morally questionable by all standards.

About Chanakya: Chanakya was born in 4th century BC was an Indian teacher, philosopher, economist, jurist and royal advisor. He is also known as Kautilya or Vishnugupta. He is considered to be the most prominent person who laid the foundation of economics and management during the ear of Gupta Empire. The principles given by him not only helped the kingdom but has been proved as a treasure upon which present day management is laid upon. His famous works are Arthashartra and Chanayka Neeti.

World for me was totally different few years ago as I was a science student and changing trade after 12th was heck tiring. But something caught my attention and I am thankful to my Professor who suggested me to pick Chanakya Neeti to have a better understanding of the economy.

While going through the book I realized how visionary Chanakya was back then. He developed principles which not only benefited the king and the people but it helped to shape the entire trade and commerce. His works talked about the people living during that era, how the trade and commerce was put into use so as to regulate money in the market.

Chanakya Neeti was actually the principles. Principles which is not limited to commerce and economy but there are concepts which hold much broader importance in one’s life, be it a teacher, a parent, a son or soul. Each element present of the earth, which is related to human in any way, has been described by him.

Chanakya always believed if one has to achieve all the set objectives in his life then it’s essential for him to follow these principles because they together served a prudent definition of a better human being who is capable for reaching the summit.

This book contains all principles along with explanations and special notes by Chankaya. The book can be completed in one sting and is very gripping.

This is a must read book for a commerce student but I would also recommend it to everyone because following these principles would definitely make you a better man and you would not loose n any phase of life.

Grapevine India has done a fantastic job while compiling this book, the way they put the things together has actually make me love this more. A great page turner.

For those readers, who have never been to the Chanakya's words, this would prove to be a good collection of Sutras. Sutras, that can feed your mind with some good lessons of life. But, if you are one of those readers who has already known Chankya's words, and are looking for some new adoption along with his words, then this not what you are looking for.

The sutras presented in this book are nothing but a translation of Sanskrit sutras in English and Hinglish language. Translation in the English language does make some sense, but I couldn't understand the presence of Hinglish language. In that place, I would be more comfortable if they Hindi would have taken place of Hinglish. Some of the sutras are specific to some areas. About kingdom and Kingsman ship. And, I felt that some of them are unnecessarily broken into small chunks, which could be presented together.

Or if presented in separate chunks, as a reader I would be delighted to see presenter's artistic contribution in that, a short story or maybe something relevant to that. But, not just translation! At places, they are there, but very limited and not that effective. What more this book could do this is to involve content like how these sutras can be adopted in today's lifestyle. It reminded me more of my Grade's Sanskrit to English translation book. The way it has been presented didn't give me the feeling of extraordinary efforts to give readers something new to feed their brain.

I'm rating it 4, not because of the presentation, but because of the original content, Chanakya's words!

The book Chanakya Neeti: With Complete Sutras contains around 570 shastras or thoughts as an abstract preached by Chanakya in his book Chanakya Neeti.

One of the best things about the book is the breaking up of slokas. Each of the slokas in the book is first written in Sanskrit, then the same Sanskrit slokas are written exactly in English with the corresponding explanations been explained in such a beautiful manner that the reader understands the importance and meaning of each of the slokas.

Considering the time these slokas were written and connecting it with the society which we live in, gives an idea of what a legends Chanakya was and how he could actually foresee what others cant see. Most of the messages in the book are in a manner which makes the reader think of his current situation and acts accordingly.

In my opinion, I would say that that this book could be considered even as a self-help book just because of the vast amount of information and deep thoughts which is been presented in this book and that that too in a very simple manner that even school children could understand. Why I say school children is because those are a time when a human brain needs to learn morality.

In short, I would say is this book simplifies the complexity of the messages and quotes of Chanakya and brings it to the reader.

Overall a good book start with if you are not aware of Chanakya and his thoughts.

This book is a compilation of thoughts of a great Indian scholar Chanakya. The thing about the book i like the most is that, as all the sayings of Chankya are in sanskrit, the writer chose to use write the quotes thrice, once in sanskrit in devnagri script, then in sanskrit in English alphabets and then finally its translation and meaning in english.

The book has very strong thoughts in both position and negative aspects. Considering these thoughts date backs more than 2000 years, many of the thoughts are disturbing in today's world. Like in one quote Chanakya says, " A woman is by nature a liar, courageous, deceitful, foolish, greedy, impious and cruel. These are the innate attributes of a woman."
(||58||)

But the book also has some amazing thoughts that can change your view of life like "Anger is death, Lust is river of hell, knowledge is cow of plenty and satisfaction is the devine orchard" (||36||)

A timeless treasure of knowledge. The principles are undoubtedly the best if applied consciously in one's life.
One of Chanakya's best advice which I liked is: 'दिन में सोने वाले पुरुष के घर कभी लक्ष्मी नहीं आती हैं, आती हैं तो केवल दरिद्रता।' Now this is not the exact way he described but the gist is more or less the same. I tried to never sleep in the daytime and the results I got are enormous.
Now may ladies will find this book as an insult or anti feminist, but we need to remember that the days of Chanakya in India was Male Dominated, and so Chanakya talks in favour of Males. Any lady reading this book should now abandon the book just because of the remarks but take the advice given out to males as the advice given to a citizen of India.

I hoped this would have been as good as other ancient philosophical texts, but the truth is it doesn't stand the test of time. It is a book written by a person deeply entrenched in caste system and sexist society that is partial to the ruling and upper class and looks down upon the working and trading class. There are many stanzas that show this.

Instead of a reading it as a philosophical text, it is better to read it as a historical text to understand how one privileged Brahmin man involved in upper echelons of ruling politics viewed society, how he perceived freedom, the opposite sex, good and bad in people.

Chankaya is undoubtedly one of the great teachers in Indian history. I was inspired by the way he organized and united the whole of Bharat and protected our motherland from the foreign invaders. His principles are very valuable and if one can follow his teachings its really an asset for that person. Its sad that even after giving birth to such great leaders our people surrendered to the foreign invaders time and again due to selfish motives. The teachings of Chanakya inspires us to love our mother country, protect our culture and also it teaches us to live with pride and not as slaves!

An awesome book, about general behavior of people, how to stay out of trouble, and other aspects of life. This 30 page book is enough to make u anticipate troubles most of the time, and see through intentions of people. It's really an engaging book. Except for a bit of sexist remark here and there everything else is quite accurate. Most of the maxims have been taken from the Vedas of India, and gives u a new perspective towards life. A must read for everyone.

A wise book from a wise man whose aphorisms and sutras are mostly applicable in the contemporary world. A definitely read book to understand insight view of chanakya's thinking and the world around him in his age of living.
Though his teachings are widely known and had a great respect for him among indians. His sutras tells us the position of a woman in his ages by his degrading aphorisms about woman.
