Compilada em 1900, quando Rilke tinha vinte e quatro anos, a sucessão de contos que compõe as Histórias do Bom Deus terá sido inspirada pela viagem que levara o autor até à Rússia no ano anterior. A vastidão da paisagem russa e a profunda espiritualidade que encontrou nas pessoas simples com quem se cruzou terão levado o poeta a refletir sobre a forma como Deus se dá a conhecer, descobrindo-O em tudo o que nos rodeia. Este é um conjunto de contos, parábolas e fábulas que quis que fosse particularmente destinado a falar às crianças sobre o divino, sobre o amor e a devoção, e que veio a revelar-se um dos seus mais importantes trabalhos em prosa. Neste volume reunimos mais três obras suas, Dois Contos de Praga (1899), Ewald Tragy (escrito entre 1898 e 1899, mas não publicado em vida) e Os Últimos (1901), que comprovam que Rainer Maria Rilke foi não só um dos maiores poetas de língua alemã do século xx, mas também um exímio contador de histórias.
