Two Middle-aged Girl Pals on a Quest for Enlightenment
Meet Dee, an intellectual with a disreputable past and a passion for food, sex, and fashion, and Bea, the former star of antacid and hemorrhoid commercials who dislikes most everything except Dee. The two decide to become self-proclaimed best-selling spiritual experts after Dee has a dream that they are. The tale of their journey to enlightenment takes place over meals, and each chapter ends with a spiritual practice—written not only to entertain, but to offer a deeper, truer, and certainly a funnier kind of wisdom than the plethora of “how-to-be-spiritual” books.
The Back Story (which is kind of a review): It was January 2009, I'd lost my lucrative magazine job in the not-so-great recession and was blue, to put it mildly. But to be honest, I also was kind of done being managing editor of a spiritual magazine, and although I missed the money, I was hungry to get back to fiction—reading and writing it—which is where my heart is. So I holed up in my New York City apartment and started having fun.
Jump Cut to Alaska:Dawn Baumann Brunke, who edited a spiritual magazine, got a forwarded email from one of the many people I'd sent my resume to. Dawn felt a connection to me, read my novel Plan Z by Leslie Kove, and emailed me.
Long Story Short: We became email and then Facebook friends, decided to write a funny book using our similar backgrounds with a lot of spiritual teacher nonsense, and after working daily for about a year, Dawn invited me to visit. So I zipped over and up to Wasilla (no, she can't see Sarah Palin's house from there) and we had a blast—laughing and making videos where we each played the character we had written. (The book is such a complete collaboration that neither of us remembers who wrote what, but we each did have a character.) Here's the first video we made: The Launch.
We were ready to launch a year ago, but suddenly the USA exploded and not even we were in the mood to deal with a funny romp, sans politics, about finding enlightenment. However, now, like a lot of people, we need an escape after a year of insanity, so . . .
Conclusion: This is our little illustrated e-book. It will probably appeal to people who have an interest in food and self-awareness—a huge demographic, no doubt (heavy sarcasm). Anyway, we had a blast, cheered each other up, and we hope it will entertain others as much as it did us.
11/15/17 UPDATE we have a website now with all the videos.
I have to admit Betsy (Bea) is a Goodreads friend of mine, and thank goodness for that. Also Thanksgiving is tomorrow so thank goodness for this book which I have turned to every time family members have asked me any questions or said anything at all about the upcoming holidays. The Practice really did enlighten me. Just enough to decide to do what I want this year. And it was a hoot and a half to boot.
I have a feeling I know what to get a lot of people for Christmas this year.
