POISONING EROS [2003] By Monica J. O’Rourke & James Wrath White
My Review 5.0 Out Of 5.0 Stars
Sometimes life is unfair. Sometimes life just plain sucks. You do what you can to get by, but sometimes even that isn't enough.
Meet Gloria, aging porno star, drug addict, failed wife, and mother—seduced into a monstrous world of depraved sex and violent deceit, battling to save her immortal soul and that of her only daughter from Inferno … and you thought your life was hell.
This novel was original published by Deadite Press in 2003. Evidently, “Poisoning Eros” was one of the most infamous---and difficult to acquire----books in underground horror for 10 years. It sounded like “smoke and mirrors” that this person or that person had gotten hold of one of the scarce “withering limited editions” in which it was released (first in 2003, and again in 2011). In 2013, reportedly to mark the book’s tenth anniversary, a “reasonably priced trade edition” was put out. I found this probably not all that well known info from HALL OF FAMEVINE VOICE Robert Beveridge.
If everyone knows all of the above already, I apologize, just wanted to share. I was impressed. This book starts right out of the gate (yes, I know animals come out of a gate) with barnyard porn, and it gets progressively more offensive. A washed-up porn star with AIDS is not typically a sympathetic protagonist and that is certainly true for Gloria. I felt from the start that the writers had something to say, and the non-stop insult of my senses was done for a reason. It became clear when Gloria is tricked into committing suicide by her daughter and Vlad and went straight to Hell that the story was really only getting started. It is in Hell that Gloria’s character starts to grow, and she is able to think and calculate again since she is off drugs. There comes the point when the fallen angel (her Demon) believes her story. He sacrifices himself in the hope, belief he may be forgiven and ascend back to Heaven. This starts a new chapter for Gloria.
The book, stripped of the gross out factor is an odyssey that Gloria is embarking upon, and I kept hoping that she would be capable of redeeming herself. She makes it to the entry way to Heaven and talks with her mother. She has found Jessica, her daughter and has forgiven her. When told by her mother only one can enter Heaven, Gloria refused to leave her daughter. Jessica clamored to leave her mother behind if she could be allowed in the gates. Jessica betrays her again.
Gloria’s whole journey was fascinating to me. It is clear that the authors were putting the puzzle pieces in place. The book DOES have a strong message. The two reigning deities in the extreme horror realm (O’Rourke & White) went for the gross out to get us to the point where we could not fail to read the message on the wall. The end of the road, after Gloria has conquered and reigns in Hell, is just a blindsided punch that reverberates. I only wish that it could have been a longer sequence when she looked over the precipice to “Heaven” below.
This was a buddy read with the folks in Extreme Gore Whores, and the authors start this off with a bang, a gang bang that is, with Gloria (our main protagonist) deep throating a donkey while getting it from behind by a Great Dane. How did Gloria manage to sink to this? Well, Gloria has been riding the horse for a long time, even back when she was a famous porn star. As she aged, turned up HIV+, and gave the horse more and more of her time (among other drugs), she faded from stardom to basically doing whatever she could to earn the cash to score. Right now, she is being filmed by 'geeks' who sell videos of her bestiality ("what about a giraffe? Do you think you could take one in your ass?"), where she gets 1000 bucks a pop.
As the authors give us some flashbacks to Gloria's life, we know she left her husband after ten years (and her daughter) due to her addictions and is now at rock bottom, or at least she thinks she is. One day she gets a call from some guy named Vlad, who offers her 50,000 to fuck a demon; well, some kid who is possessed by a demon at any rate. She takes it of course, and things get even stranger...
It was pretty hard to feel sympathy for Gloria, but still, she gets pretty fucked over in this one, and I mean that literally. When Vlad, in some sort of agreement with her ex and child, forces her kill her grandchild, she kills herself instead, only to find herself in hell. Yeah, this had a classic Catholic conception of heaven and hell, and you go to hell for suicide. Once in hell, I lost count of the endless rape scenes, each one nastier than the last; you can only take so much after all. I love extreme horror, but there needs to be more than just gore-- give me a plot! Unfortunately, the plot here is pretty damn thin. There is a possible redemption theme here, when Gloria tries to rescue her daughter from Hell (why? still not sure), but that is just an aside. The main take away I got was simply the old adage-- life sucks and then you die. I have rarely come across such a nihilistic read. Life on Earth is hell, even worse in actual hell, and that is about it. YMMV with this one, but I am not sure who the target audience for this one is. 2.5 rapey starts, rounded up as the last half had some intrigue.
I really enjoyed the first two parts of this book, even though Gloria's sexual animal antics did start to grate on me after a while! Did she ever get a go with that Giraffe? 🦒 The "Hell" chapter was the best for me...but still a lot of torturous sex going on there...but still enjoyable reading! Vlad was a total bastard troll...but I did love him in my own sick way. I was glad to get to the ending but I found it rather boring to be honest...it didn't blow my mind.I thought it was going to better,so rather disappointing there. All in all very well written with some shocking gory bloody scenes which were explicit and very well described...not much imagination needed at all. O'Rourke and White work well together to bring you one "HELL" of a read. This book won't be for every horror reader as there are many trigger warnings...including Bestiality, zoophilia, infant abuse and rape....so please be warned before stepping in to "HEAVEN & HELL"!!!!!! Which one are you going to??? 😇👼... 👿👿
Poisoning Eros is for lovers of continuous rape, gore, torture, brutality and mind-bending pornography. It tries really hard to be terrifying but often comes across as ridiculous.
So how do I really feel 🙉?
What’s the colour of earth, or for that matter, the colour of faeces? Brown. When you compact waste it loses its colour and becomes that earthy shade. In effect, no colour at all. There is so much gore, brutality and beastiality recklessly thrown at you non-stop it fails to shock and no longer has any impact as your brain becomes desensitised. We associate death with blackness, hell with furious red, but Poisoning Eros is the colour of compacted brown. Some people call this chaos theory, the idea that if we throw enough shit at the fan it will all work out in the end. It’s more like catapulting severed heads over battlements in the hope of shock effect.
Once we go down to hell, any semblance of plausibility goes out the window. If literature is well written (this is not) authors can get away with practically anything, even writing about tin-can alley backwoods or mundane events. Here we get the most extreme scenarios but no real tension. Just stomping on Gloria! Tension usually comes from a gradual buildup and the psychological expectancy that comes from that, followed by release. The only tension this book creates is by putting it down and taking a break, and then picking it up again after a reset. Like emptying out the trash.
To give the book credit, it’s an exciting page turner at times to see how increasingly sordid it can become. It’s also quite funny and ridiculous, approaching subjects you could never imagine in your worst nightmares. There's also a sense of possible redemption and revenge in the hope that Gloria can kick ass and get some payback for what she’s been/going through. It's fast paced while flaying your brain into submission. Like masturbating until your genitals drop off.
It's also a good reminder never to bother with The 120 Days of Sodom, just as I got bored and struggled with Hogg by Samuel R. Delany, when there’s nothing more you can throw at the reader but hundreds of pages of someone else's sodomised world of defecating and ass fisting.
Unfortunately, the definitions of heaven and hell are cliched stereotypes of biblical proportions. I don't need pseudo-religious instruction on another person's version of good vs evil - I can get that from Lord of The Rings. It's corny, trite, overbearing and sometimes patronising, while feeling creepily intrusive and assumptive on the morals of right or wrong.
It’s loosely written, a bit cheesy and often repetitive, too extreme because it assumes too much, gives no breathing room and never lets off the gas, and therefore with no real tension. But anything that gets you worked up enough is a kind of success, right?
And extra merit for allowing me to vent off at the hideous world we live in, at the superficial people living just for appearances. For reminding me that the world can easily become a hateful place if you make bad decisions or let it slip too much. For reminding me of the pitfalls of class-A drug abuse, about the terrors of getting old in the porn industry when no one wants your services anymore.
This book was an amazing opportunity for a riches to rags story on the porn industry, including the pros and cons of living in that environment over decades, so we can better understand the depravity and disappointment when the glamour finally wears off. Instead, we get thrust into burning hell as it becomes OTT and comical - chapters and chapters of it.
'Gloriana on the Highway to Hell - Down, but certainly Not Out!'
Always being one for a good tale depicting the afterlife in Hell in all it's horrific, hideous and truly gruesome and grotesque anti-glory, then this totally OTT despairing, yet thoroughly engaging 18+ trip 'down under' certainly did not fail to deliver. Great scenes and descriptions from the black abyss, with lots of demonic action and a good story that kept transforming itself into something a little unexpected the further the journey went.
Gloria is a fading top porn star who is pushed into doing the most seedy, desperate and truly deplorable short movies in order to feed her all-consuming drug habit. After meeting a few unsavoury characters, things then take a noticeable turn for the worse, but there are some things that are just a plain no-no-NO! So when the heat and pressure is really on how can these truly inhumane unthinkable options be best avoided? Possible solution: GO ENTER HELL ITS VERY SELF!! Surely eternal damnation can't be that bad? - well, maybe you may have to just think again.
Expect to encounter all of the following triggers...and more:
Extreme venereal practices, physical and sexual violence, bestiality, humiliation, degradation, depravity, torture, atrocious abominations, death, destruction and total desolation of the inner and outer self.
If none of the above cause major concern or trauma in reading about them in such a 'fun' fictional piece such as "Poisoning Eros' (not to be taken seriously) then definitely go ahead, meet the folks existing down under and thoroughly enjoy the ride on this one-way trip into oblivion.
This was some of the most depraved, disgusting, and exploitative things I've ever been exposed to, so naturally, I couldn't stop reading. The only drawback is the length. It felt long. Maybe it's because it revels so much in the viscera and perversion that it will often loose sight of the plot. The back half of the book picks up steam though, and the ending is crazy weird and strong. Keep this book away from children, yikes!
Poisoning Eros by Wrath James White and Monica J. O'Rourke is one of the most depraved and disgusting books I have ever read. Gloria, the main character, did so many disgusting things, or had so many disgusting things done to her, that she made me sick. I found her journey to Hell very interesting. All the creatures that inhabited it are nightmarish and well written. The way the authors described existing in this place was good. I liked that aspect of the book. But, I was a little disappointed by the plot and Gloria’s behavior in the face of adversity. Everyone makes mistakes, but even after all the disastrous consequences of her actions, she never learned from these mistakes, and she continued to take non reflected actions. I couldn't connect or have empathy for her. At some point in the story, all the physical and psychological tortures inflicted upon her over and over again, became over-the-top, and even ridiculous to me, so not very interesting in my opinion. I understood that she was in hell, and that she was supposed to suffer, but I wanted a little bit more development in other aspects of the story, not only the ignominy of Gloria’s suffering in Hell. At the end of the story, I still had too many unanswered questions. The parts related to two important characters, Vlad and Angela, could have been more developed. Why Vlad seems unaffected by what was happening in Hell? Why was he so confident, and powerful? Why, how and when Angela became this entity? I’ll never know. But the ending was good. I recommend Poisoning Eros to Splatterpunk readers.
This book will take you to hell both literal and figurative. It is dark and apologetically depraved and irreverent.
The characters are painfully real in their psychological make up, their vices, their faults, and their strengths' graphically exposing the horrors of human nature.
This book was an absolute trip! holy hell ! Well when I thought things couldn’t get any worse it literally did , I saw the name and it intrigued me I had to read this and I’m not disappointed
Poising Eros is a collaboration of two titans from the splatterpunk community, Monica O’Rourke and Wrath James White. The story follows a female lead character that literally travels to Hades to feed her deviant addictions. The relentless depictions of tortured souls combined with a foundation of thought provoking morals make this a violent one two punch to the gut sending the reader on a voyage to an unforgettable surreal abyss. O’Rourke and White, a match made in hell...two talents readers benefit from.
“Suffering is the reason for being. Suffering is your life force. Without agony, there is no redemption.”
I want to start off this review by saying that just because I gave this five stars it doesn't imply that I enjoyed this book. This book was painful to read. The first half of this book was really rough and I almost tapped out because of the subject matter being so disgusting to the point it was making me sick. The writing was so vivid and during the scenes in Hell, it felt like I was right there along with Gloria. If you are thinking of giving this one a go, please keep in mind that in the beginning there are some really graphic scenes of bestiality which is by far the worst of the book as far as stomach churning events go. This is not for beginners looking to explore the splatterpunk genre, hell even more experienced readers will struggle with this one because I sure did. If you can handle this given the heavy triggers and aren't opposed to blasphemy then definitely give it a go. I will never revisit this one. This is going to stick with me for a long time.
I will admit that I was a bit apprehensive when I first encountered Poisoning Eros by Monica J. O'Rourke & Wrath James White initially. For some reason it felt like a girthy mofo & I’m not afraid to say I was daunted, just full daunt. However, once I got a few pages in…I already knew I wasn’t going to be able to put this disgustingly perverse mofo down until I was finished with it. Aaaaaand, it was 100% worth it. This not-so-thick mama-jama was worth the hyperfocus and lived up to all the hype.
Quick synopsis: Gloria is a working girl, well…was a working girl. Times got tough, addictions got tougher, & she found herself under some very…bestial circumstances. She definitely didn’t ever see her life going this way. Didn’t plan on going from a wife & mother to a…”performer” who doesn’t flinch when the most deplorable things are asked of her. Just when things couldn’t get worse, they indeed do & she is sent into the afterlife. Not surprised, she descends into the depths of hell but while she’s getting the formal tour some things begin to fall into place. Her priorities are shifted & she yearns for another chance. Now she has to literally go through hell to see if her life could be different & prepare for the repercussions when the place lives up to its name.
The best way to describe this is a perfectly crafted, modern epic. While Dante’s Inferno is a masterpiece…Poisoning Eros is the updated version that gives us the meat & potatoes we really wanted all along, while thankfully eschewing those pesky Christian underpinnings. O’Rourke & White have created a nearly perfect piece of modern literature that could probably go on to be studied by English scholars…if there wasn’t SO MUCH CUM & VISCERA. I argue they are warranted and necessary for the story, but let’s be honest. These tenure-spoiled collegiates probably wouldn’t be able to get past that donkey show intro to appreciate it. That’s academia for you. 🙄 Their loss. This was an amazing read. Truly groundbreaking, (get it cuz she *allegedly* escaped hell, teehee) something a fantasy lover who dabbles in erotic horror could get into? Probably not, but I like to play devils advocate so I say go for it. At least try and make it past the donkey show. It gets so much better/worse. 🖤
I'm not quite sure what to say about this one and also feel like my normal way of rating a book might not apply. One thing I'm mostly sure of is that I can't say I enjoyed this or that I would recommend it to anyone I know. And I don't say that because the book was bad, but because I genuinely don't know anyone that might enjoy this.
The story follows Gloria, an aging and drug-addicted porn star at the end of a washed-up career. She resorts to gangbangs with farm animals for a few hundred bucks and some drugs. And that's just a normal day and the springboard for her situation to get worse.
I've lurked the internet for a few decades now and was a teenager during the early days of internet speeds moving from dial-up to DSL and cable. I'm part of the generation that rented Faces of Death from the local video store and downloaded random videos from eMule and Limewire. That being said, this book still had a few scenes that were like a slap in the face for shock factor. So I guess you could say from an Extreme Horror standpoint, this book delivered.
Descriptions of various lurid acts of violence and sex often went for pages at a time. I feel like the word gratuitous gets thrown around too easily, but even I spent a little time pondering my definition of the word. So if you are here for the Splatter Horror, this book delivered.
I can't say I rooted for or identified with any of the characters. It's almost what happens when you see too much war or crime footage in one sitting - the people stop being people with families or identities. After a point, it's just strangely shaped meat being manipulated while leaking everywhere. Despite this, I kept reading to see where the story went. I can't say it arrived at a satisfying conclusion for me, which might have been the point. Maybe the journey was more important than the destination. Maybe because I found the ending a bit underwhelming when it was supposed to be impactful...I dunno. I was feeling quite apathetic by then. So if you are here for characterization or a compelling story, I don't know if this is for you.
I'm not a religious person, so maybe some of the content would hit such a person differently. Maybe if you are a reformed (insert denomination here), you will have a different experience with certain elements of this story. If you are a devout (insert denomination here) I doubt you will enjoy this. I guess read at your own risk.
If you haven't dabbled in Extreme or Splatter horror before, I wouldn't recommend this as a first exposure. I would look for something with at least a few relatable characters and a more traditional plot maybe. That way, if the splatter and shock aren't for you, at least the characters and plot might keep you going. I don't think that would be the case for this book.
I have wanted to read this book for years, and thanks to Deadite Press re-releasing it I finally got the chance. And I have to say that I really loved this book! To summarize the book without giving too much away; the story follows Gloria an aging porn star turned drug addict, who used to be great but now will do anything for a fix. Unfortunately for Gloria she is about to find out that all of the pain she endured on earth is nothing compared to what she will find in hell. The tortures she finds are described in explicit detail; something not for the faint of heart but enjoyable to those of us who like hardcore horror.
This story is much deeper than just gratuitous sex and violence; as it examines redemption as well as our perceptions of God and the Devil. And just what if neither Heaven or Hell is what we expect it to be. Fans of the Teratologist by Lee and White will really enjoy this offering, but be warned that this is a book that will stick with you long after you have turned the final page.
I received a copy of this book for free in e-book format in return for an honest review.
Intense diabolical even. This was an intense and dark read that touched a wide gamut of societal mores, religious ideas, philosophies, perversity and horror. nothing is sacred within the pages of this book except perhaps the desire to take one to the edge and upheave the entire status quo. Even with all this, it was still a page turner.
Wrath James White and Monica J. O'Rourke, Poisoning Eros (Deadite Press, 2003)
For ten years, Poisoning Eros was one of the most infamous—and hard to get hold of—books in underground horror. I came across a lot of people who claimed to have read one of the witheringly limited editions in which it was released, first in 2003, then again in 2011, and all of them sang the book's praises, but I never so much as smelled one until Deadite Press finally put out a reasonably-priced trade edition in 2013, presumably to mark the book's tenth anniversary. With all that build-up, I'm not sure what I was expecting, but I will say this: any tale that starts off with barnyard porn and then gets more offensive is pretty much a guaranteed winner, for my money.
Plot: Gloria is a washed-up porn star whose chose her drug addiction over her family. When the drugs started interfering with her career, she rode the downward spiral as long as she could, to the point where, when we open, we're presented with the scene mentioned in the opening paragraph. (It is not the only one of its type in the first half of the book, so be warned. Or be titillated. I won't judge.) Suffice to say that, through a number of agencies both internal and external, Gloria comes to a bad end and finds herself in Hell, which is, well, about what you would expect. Gloria, however, had a very rough life, and the torments of Hell are just another tribulation to be endured—and it turns out that her old skills may come in handy even in the afterlife. All the old stories, after all, tell us that demons are exceptionally fond of negotiation...
There's a part of me that wants to dismiss Poisoning Eros for what is, at its black little heart, a pretty standard morality play with a lot of added shock value. That said, there are two very strong related points in its favor. The first is that, once you've gotten past the opening scene and you start seeing where the pieces in this puzzle fit, it becomes obvious that neither White nor O'Rourke was in this to do shock for shock's sake. There's a reason for all of the depraved, degenerate, disgusting stuff that goes on, even if (as with the opening scene) that reason is not immediately apparent; the fact that nothing in this book is gratuitous, especially given that it does in fact live up to its reputation, is pretty huge. And then there's the closing scene, about which I can say absolutely nothing without giving the entire game away. But if you're going to go with a traditional Judeo-Christian value set for your framework, you've gotta do something pretty explosive to get my attention. That last scene...does.
On the other hand, that last scene is ridiculously short. They could have easily played it for an entire third chapter and I would have fallen right in line. It would have fit (at least I think it would have fit) with the book we got; it would certainly have been consistent with both Gloria's character and White and O'Rourke's finely-honed senses of the ironic. But there I go again bitching about things I didn't get that would have made a book better rather than criticizing the book I have in front of me. But let's face it—all the horrors to be found here are of absence, on the meta level. I am unsure whether White and O'Rourke succeeded in telling the tale they wanted to tell; no one will know that but them. But they succeeded in telling a tale, and telling a very good one. While this is a very personal thing and YMMV (and probably will), I found it one of those books that Stephen King calls “go for the gross-out”, rather than having the sort of profoundly disturbing atmosphere of something like Charlee Jacob's Haunter, but that makes it not one iota less worth reading. Pick it up, now that you easily can, and strap yourself in—turbulence is expected on this flight. *** ½
So I've been reading Wrath James White books now for several years and this one has always been on the 'to read' list as I've never been able to get an affordable copy. But that has now changed.
This book follows Gloria, an aging porn star who's career has taken a turn for the worse as she finds herself having to do more extreme films in order to pay for her drug addiction. However she's going to have to go through hell and back if you wants to turn her life around and right her wrongs.
I've purposely not given too much about the start away, the book is designed to shock and disgust it's reader and be as extreme as possible. So I wanted to leave as much of the story intact and a surprise as possible. If your a fan of Wrath's more extreme works then you'll find this is something you'll enjoy. If your after something more story-driven and less gory then you might want to give this one a miss.
It's a hard book to rate, the story is the weaker part of the book, however I did enjoy reading it and it was well worth the time. Fans of WJW will enjoy.
The novel was received in exchange for an honest review
A bit uneven and scattered in parts, but pretty hilarious (unless you're my German mother, who didn't even think A Confederacy of Dunces was funny. And if you are my German mother, you should definitely avoid reading this book, even though the authors dedicated it to their moms. I don't have the energy for your guaranteed enraged rants on "how could you possibly read this, this FILTH! No! This is the product of diseased brains and I seriously think these people should be locked up!" After all, you threw out my The World According to Garp when I was in 5th grade, claiming it was "pornographic trash!")
And who knew I'd be gleaning little nuggets of life wisdom from this book?
"Torso demon began his endless trek through the passages of Hell and wondered who the fuck he was being loyal to and whether or not it was worth it."
and
"Very few of them stopped fucking, even as they bled to death."
which is kind of a decent metaphor of life and the world currently, I think. But I HAVE been told I have a kind of bleak view of things.
I don't know where to begin. This started out as a typical sex/ gore fest, but wound up going in directions i didn't see coming. Most of the characters in this story are unsympathetic, so i never got behind any of them. The plot is well thought out, as are the characters, just very unlikable. Read this, but only if you have a strong stomach, and aren't adverse to blasphemy. I doubt i ever re-read this, as i think it'll stay with me for quite a while.
POISONING EROS (w/ Monica J O'Rourke) is a fantastic read. Although filled with depraved sex, IMO it's there to provide the motivation of the storyline - not for the gross-out shock value.
I've heard rumours of a sequel . . . I'm hoping that those rumours are true.
Grotesque, vulgar, disturbing, asinine, brutal, gut wrenching, vomit inducing, mind Rape, fever dream, nightmare complexity, bile regurgitation, sacrilegious,
I am totally bloated with bile imagery that bleeds my thought patterns after reading this brutally monstrous brilliance of unflinching dread, blood, and sexual immorality of the mind. How far can a writer go. Well look no further than this book. For it is the very definition of living over, well over, beyond over the edge in writing. This book is depravity at its core. There is no definition of right and wrong because this book destroys that concept.
This is gut wrenching and bile inducing horror. Not bogeyman horror, but pain horror, sex horror, mind Rape of the senses horror.
I felt dirty. I felt nasty. I felt sick while reading this book and that is its ultimate mastery. The reader is transformed before the pages. The pages transform before you into imagery that the simple word or concepts of the word nightmare has no meaning compared to what is within this book.
Bestiality, creature sex, incest, demon rape, murder rape, violent sexuality. An eye opening exploration of just every type of animal or creature cock imaginable sticking in orifices. This probably should have its own category for just what the he'll this book should be categorized as.
You get to experience human hell and also the beyond hell. This book changes the nerve patterns as you read along. For this book can not humanly be digested in one setting, for one must pause and put down the book. This is not scary horror, this is vulgar, disgusting bile horror. It turns your insides out and then forcefully penetrates them back into your inner-self.
If you want disturbing, and I mean grotesque horror then this is for you. This is a masterpiece of hell come to life. This is a living, breathing layer of hell in all its moments of depiction. If you do not have a strong stomach, or mind or hell even sanity then I would not recommend this book. But if you know disgusting horror, or at least you think you know disgusting horror than look no further than this ripped from the pages of hell digest of the human body in all its sinful ways.
Would I Return to it Again: I am laughing and want to say are you F***ing kidding me, but in reality that little inner darkness, that little demon on my shoulder is giggling and shacking its head yes. For I would return to these authors and experience the devastating brutality that this book is.
Would I Recommend: Oh I am laughing all over again. I don't know anybody personally in my life that I could recommend this to. So all I will say is if you love extreme (and that word for this book needs to be redefined) horror than eat your heart out in all its gory, sexual glory.
My Rating: 4 out of 5
Four Final Words: Mind Rape Beyond Comprehension.
Shoving one of her long sharp talons deep inside his anus, coring it out as he screamed and convulsed. Blood poured from his rectum like rainwater through a gutter as her claws carved out his asshole and the orifice where his cock once dangled, now resembling a menstruating vagina, until it was little more than a ring of lacerated pink flesh like a half eaten grapefruit.
Gloria wasn't in her prime anymore. She was a drug addict, sad, and lonely porn star just looking for her next fix. Since she was so messed up on drugs, the only porn she could do involved animals of all shapes and sizes. She just couldn't kick the drugs and in turn accepted her life for the shitty one it was.
One day she meets Vlad. A nasty red headed looking troll but he has what she wants, money for drugs. Instead of animals, he offers her ....a ghost. She didn't believe him but she was desperate for cash, she accepts. After that night Vlad doesn't go away and the next offer he makes her do is one she can't do. This takes Gloria through hell and her fight for....survival?
This was such a depraved ride but it sucked me right in. This is a mean version of hell and Gloria goes through alot for her sins! Some scenes were extremely vivid, it almost felt like I was in hell with her. Only thing I didn't enjoy was part 1 with all the beastiality but other than that, I loved this. You see Gloria's addiction take her to places even she didn't think she would go. I loved the demons and that line of heaven and hell. Beautifully written and I can't stop thinking of this. This one isn't for everyone but if you can handle it, I highly suggest it.
This book should come with lots of trigger warnings. It has been a long time since I read something that made be go "YUCK!!" and "WTF?"
I had a hard time getting through this book as I kept wanting to toss my Kindle across the room. I nearly DNF'd this book.
I doubt that I will read this again, and am thankful that because I read on average 300 books a year, I should be able to forget this book.
This book is well written, and reminds me somewhat of early Tanith Lee. But it is not my cup of tea. YMMV
It takes a talented author to describe so vividly what happens in this book. I really wanted the backstabbing daughter to get stuck in Purgatory or tossed into the Pit.

Another of my fav horror tales of all time that I have recommended sooo many times to those who have similar morbidly wonderful tastes in literature. What a fun, disturbing, grotesque, sometimes hilarious ride this book is! From filthy porn all the way to the depths of hell, this one has it all! This was my second read at the time from Mr White and first from Ms O'Rourke, both of which I went on to read many more of. Absolute genius, we need more like this! 5/5
The first page of this book is all you need to read to get just a tame taste of what's in store for the main character. This is relentless splatterpunk, and so over the top, it's almost comical. But in that way where you find yourself nervously laughing because it's so uncomfortable. I loved how repulsed I felt.
The back half was far more interesting than the front, which wasn't much more than shock for the sake of shock value. The second part had some interesting ideas going on under the hood.
The quality of writing leaves a fair bit to be desired. Someday I'll find the point where splatterpunk and well-written meet.
