When her sleepwalking aunt is accused of committing murder, Poppy McAllister finds out there's no rest for the weary . . . Between trying to get her gluten-free baking business off the ground and helping her aunt remodel her old Victorian into the Butterfly House Bed and Breakfast in Cape May, New Jersey, Poppy is ready to call, Mayday! And now Aunt Ginny--who's a handful wide-awake--is sleepwalking on her new sleeping pill prescription and helping herself to neighbors' snacks and knickknacks. Even more alarming, a local humanitarian who worked with troubled teens is found murdered, and the police suspect the Snack Bandit. Other than a bad case of midnight munchies and some mild knickknack kleptomania, Aunt Ginny is harmless. Someone's trying to frame her. Poppy will need to work tirelessly to uncover the killer and put the case to rest--before Aunt Ginny has to trade in her B&B for a bunk bed behind bars . . .
Libby Klein graduated Lower Cape May Regional High School sometime in the '80s. Her classes revolved mostly around the culinary sciences and theater, with the occasional nap in Chemistry. A few years ago, she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that forced her to remove gluten from her kitchen and adopt a Paleo Diet. Now her life revolves around coffee and bacon. When she’s not feeling sorry for herself that she can’t eat bread, she writes from her Northern Virginia office while trying to keep her cat Figaro off her keyboard. Most of her hobbies revolve around eating, and travel, and eating while travelling.
Warning: Midnight Snacks are Murder may be best read when alone so that your family won’t try to have you committed when your cackling like a lunatic!
Midnight Snacks are Murder is the second installment in Libby Klein’s cozy A Poppy McAllister Mystery series. And having read both books in the series now I’d almost say this one got even funnier than the first so if I could give out more than the standard five stars believe me I would.
In this book Poppy and Aunt Ginny are dealing with all the work around the house as they are preparing to open up their new B&B. But when Aunt Ginny has a bit of an episode Poppy rushes her to the doctor where she’s given a couple of prescriptions that have some rather disturbing consequences.
After a few break ins around the neighborhood and the police getting involved Poppy finds that the real culprit is right under her own roof, Aunt Ginny. Every night since taking her new medication Aunt Ginny has been sleepwalking and eating any snacks she can find in her own home and the neighbors. But after turning herself in and adjusting her meds a new break in occurs that looks just like a case of the “snack bandit” with one exception, a dead body, so now Poppy must find the real killer before her aunt ends up behind bars.
If anyone is a fan of a quirky and fun cozy that is full of laughs then this series is the one you want to pick up. Poppy is a forty something character who has quite the humorous streak herself but get her eccentric aunt around and the laughs just do not stop. Poppy’s also a cat owner and anyone who has ever owned a cat will get a kick out of Figaro’s antics too. All of the characters in here are well done really and I just can’t help but smile from start to finish with this series and through all the light hearted fun there is also a decent mystery to solve too. If it’s not already obvious then yes, I definitely recommend the entire series.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
Ohmigosh! Where do I begin! 😊 First, this book has everything I look for in a cozy mystery. It’s top-notch entertainment. The mystery is superb. I couldn’t guess the killer until the author revealed the connection that made revenge acceptable in the killer’s sick mind. I love all the characters that are lovable and dislike all the characters that are mean. I laughed-out-loud so much my sides hurt! Libby Klein is an author to watch, and her books are now automatic buys for this cozy reader.
Poppy McAllister is a sassy, wise-cracking, plus-size protagonist living in beautiful Cape May, New Jersey with her 80+ year old Aunt Ginny, whose health is still really good...let’s just say she needs supervision. Make that lots of supervision. Remodeling Aunt Ginny’s Old Victorian into Butterfly House Bed & Breakfast is hard on their nerves, plus their budget is tight. When Poppy’s mother-in-law, Georgina, arrives and adds her dictatorial and snoopy personality into the mix; the fur starts to fly. And, speaking of fur, wait’ll you see how Poppy’s cat, Figaro, handles the frenzy and chaos! I love this cat❣️ Lastly, I would give this book 10 Stars if I could. Definitely a keeper.
I read and reviewed an ARC provided by the author. Thank you.
This one is even better than the first book in the series and Libby Klein just got herself another everlasting fan of the series!
It has some dark themes for a cozy mystery but it handles it exceptionally well. I am even more impressed that it combines it so well with some great humour.
I am not sure who is funnier: funky Aunt Ginny or the annoying mother in law Georgina?
The mystery itself was sooooo good too! So many things going on and such a big variety of suspects ... I suspected pretty much everyone at some point during the story and was totally surprised by the ending! - Can't wait for the next one....I WANT MORE!!!
I LOVED THIS READ. It goes on my TOP 10 read for 2018!
I requested this book from NetGalley and am thankful that Kensington and the author provided me with an advance copy.
Great mystery! Fabulous characters! Hysterical! I can go on and on with descriptions and still never say all the good things I want about this book.
When I read the first book in the Poppy McAllister Mysteries, CLASS REUNIONS ARE MURDER, I didn’t think I would ever laugh again so hard during a book. I was so completely wrong! MIDNIGHT SNACKS ARE MURDER is twice as funny! Poppy and her Aunt Ginny soon had me way past the laughing-till-I-cried stage, and quickly entering the I’m-going-to-wet-myself stage! Author Libby Klein must be a hoot to know. I can’t imagine spending time around her without having a box of tissues handy, and perhaps wearing adult panties.
As humorous as this book was, it was also a brilliant whodunit. With more twists and turns than a bag of pretzels, the mystery became harder for me to solve with each new chapter. Just when I knew I had it figured out something would happen that had me changing my guess. When the reveal came, I was so surprised! Now having read the book, of course I should have seen it. However, some of author’s clues were so subtle they just didn’t register with me. Brava Ms. Klein!
Treat yourself to a great read. MIDNIGHT SNACKS ARE MURDER will be one of the best snacks your brain has had all year! And not only will your brain be happy, so will you tum, because there are wonderful gluten free, and Paleo recipes included!
Widow Poppy McAllister has her hands full. She’s busy with her gluten-free baking company as well as opening a B&B with her Aunt Ginny. To add to Poppy’s already full plate, her aunt has started sleepwalking and stealing items from her neighbors’ homes. Not to mention having a few snacks at each house and leaving a mess. Things are even more complicated when Poppy's mother-in-law, Georgina, stays at the B&B to supposedly lend a helping hand. Unfortunately, she seems more like a hindrance than anything else.
Then, murder strikes the small Cape May town. A local hero and head of a teen center is murdered. The only suspect is Aunt Ginny during one of her sleepwalking incidents. Poppy can’t believe her aunt killed anyone, but the police aren’t looking elsewhere. So, it's up to Poppy to find a killer.
Poppy’s pursuit of the killer takes her and her cohorts on a crazy ride around the small town. The story keeps you guessing with truly LOL moments. Aunt Ginny is a hoot. I loved her and her wacky antics. Poppy has the patience of a saint between Aunt Ginny and a mother-in-law who is on her back every step of the way. Oh, I can’t forget Poppy’s adorable kitty Figaro. Both adorable and feisty. Not to mention Poppy has two handsome men vying for her attention. Like I said, she has her hands full.
The author gives the readers several different motives and suspects for murder. The story keeps your head spinning. I know I didn’t know which direction to go, so I was suspicious of everyone. Of course I was totally wrong and shocked until I realized whodunit. Libby Klein is quickly making a name for herself in the cozy mystery world and she is doing it so very well.
FTC Disclosure: I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Poppy has a lot on her plate trying to get the B&B ready to open. There have been many delays but things slow down, even more, when her “silent partner” mother-in-law shows up and does her best to convince Poppy to just sell the place, especially with the rash of crime hitting the neighborhood. The Snack Bandit aka Aunt Ginny has been sneaking into her neighbor’s houses in the middle of the night. As a side effect of one of her new medications, she has been sleepwalking. Then a man is found dead in his home and the police put Ginny under house arrest as their prime suspect. Just what they don’t need is another family scandal. Poppy will clear her aunt’s name, prove the police wrong and get her business off the ground no matter what obstacles are thrown in her way.
Another stellar entry from Ms. Klein. I absolutely love these characters. Poppy is a strong woman, that makes a huge step toward her independence, taking on her mother-in-law in this story. I don’t know how she held out as long as she did but this reader was cheering from the sidelines. Her romantic relationships are moving forward too in a very natural and unhurried pace. So realistic and believable. Aunt Ginny is a hoot and a half. Her antics while under house arrest were fabulously funny. Laughing out loud, you bet I was. Cat, Figaro is an absolute prize. The author’s descriptions of his behavior make him come to life and leap off the pages.
The mystery is quite a puzzler. It was so much fun chasing down clues with Poppy. The victim appears to be very well liked but there were surprisingly several suspects for his murder. Like the first book in this series, Class Reunions Are Murder, I was totally surprised when the killer was revealed. I believe at one time or another I thought each of the suspects was guilty.
Ms. Klein has quickly become one of my favorite authors. Her stories deliver everything I love about cozy mysteries. Genuine characters in serious situations, but with a huge dose of humor too. I can’t wait for book #3, Restaurant Weeks Are Murder, will be released in February 2019.
This book, like the first, deserves more than 5 stars!

This series is AH-MAY-ZING. If you like cozy mysteries, I HIGHLY recommend ready Poppy McAllister. These books are funny as hell! And, they have fantastic mysteries that keep you guessing until the very end! The only downside? The wait to get the next book!!! Gosh, I really can't say enough good things about Libby Klein's series. So I'll keep it simple- READ THESE BOOKS. They feature a great cast of characters, a ton of humor and fun, and nearly unsolvable mysteries. This is now my favorite cozy mystery series to date! Previously, I would say Hannah Swensen was my favorite sleuth and baker, but Poppy McAllister has beat her.
I want to keep this review short and sweet because I don't have too much to say about it other than the fact that it's quite honestly, some of the best cozy mysteries ever. However, I want to tell readers that these characters are simply divine. The main character/sleuth is Poppy. She is on a paleo diet (recipes included) and is starting to run a B&B out of her elderly aunts home. Her elderly aunt, aunt Ginny, is HILARIOUS. She reminds me of grandma Mazur from the Stephanie Plum series. In this book, Aunt Ginny is suspected of murder. GASP! Why? Because she is the sweet tooth burglar under certain meds (who knew sleep walking can lead to certain "criminal acts"). And when a crime scene is shown to have traces of her previous "crimes" all suspicion turns to her! Good thing Poppy can sleuth her way through the investigation. Otherwise, Ginny is a goner!
Friends, cozy lovers, and everyone else in between, this is a series that must be read! I love it so much and want to recommend it to everyone!
Poppy is trying to remodel an old Victorian into a bed and breakfast and get her gluten-free baking business going, plus dealing with her crazy aunt Ginny and her former mother-in-law who is over the top interfering. Aunt Ginny has started getting up in the middle of the night, going to neighbors houses, eating and taking small things. They figure out it is her medicines and she stops the midnight raids, but when a man is found dead with the same food and small things missing, Aunt Ginny is the prime suspect. Poppy is sure she didn’t do it. She gets involved in figuring out who do. The book has a lot of humor in it and I look forward to the next in the series.
The second book of the Poppy McAllister is very funny as Aunt Ginny and her Mother-in-law, Georgina clashed. Lilly's General contractor it by both Smith has issues with has problems with Georgiana. Add the antics of Figaro when takes sides with Aunt Ginny. All the neighbors are being visited at night by a bandit who eats something and takes a small item. It turns out to be Aunt Ginny sleepwalking. There is a love triangle forming. Who will Lilly' romance? Lilly will uncover at risk, embezzlement, domestic abuse and drugs before she managed to clear Aunt Ginny from a murder charge. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book and series Gluten-free recipes are included.
Disclosure: Many thanks to Kensington Books for a review copy. The opinions expressed are my own.
Poor Poppy!! She's got her hands full! Not only is her aunt stealing tacky items from the neighbors while sleepwalking, but her cat is naughty as all get out, her persnickety mother in law is getting in everyone's way, and to top it all off she still on that godforsaken Paleo diet!! What could be worse than all of that? Well, the cops are also honing in on Aunt Ginny as a murder suspect! Poppy knows that her aunt would never commit murder so she decides to show that know it all cop Amber once and for all that nobody messes with Poppy McAllister! Not only does this book contain a well planned mystery but the author also threw in lots of humor, a love triangle, and a bunch of mouth watering recipes (I'd love to eat them even if they are PaleoNO recipes)! I highly recommend this series if you want to laugh your butt off while reading a fun cozy mystery with lots of twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end! I am eagerly awaiting the next book in this series!
MIDNIGHT SNACKS ARE MURDER is the second book in the Poppy McAllister Mystery series. I truly believe this was one of the funniest cozies I have ever read. I was laughing throughout most of the book and Poppy won my heart from the very first chapter. Written by a fellow Jersey girl, I was instantly hooked from page one and could not put this wonderful story down. The twists and turns kept coming and I had to know who dun it! Every time I thought I knew who it was, a few pages later, Libby Klein threw me for a loop and I knew I was wrong!
Poppy has just lost her husband nine months ago. She stays with her eccentric aunt, Ginny, who she learns, is being investigated by police for murder! Hang on tight readers, MIDNIGHT SNACKS ARE MURDER is going to take you on a crazy and wild ride. Aunt Ginny is sleep walking and has been dubbed The Snack Bandit, all due to her new anxiety medication. Poppy's mother in law, Georgina arrives to help with the renovations of the B and B and I wanted to strangle her in every chapter! How Poppy doesn't lose her mind between Ginny and Georgina is beyond me! Besides all that she is dealing with being in a love triangle with her old high school boyfriend and a new man who seems a little too smooth to me!
Now Poppy finds herself investigating the murder of a local hero and she has a long list of suspects. MIDNIGHT SNACKS ARE MURDER soon has Poppy's list getting shorter and shorter and Poppy is afraid Aunt Ginny is going to wind up in federal prison. Poppy is a horrible detective and at times, she really cracked me up with her way of thinking. Haha it's just so funny! I was laughing out loud but the story also kept me guessing. I read it in one long sitting and had to know what was going to happen to Poppy and her Aunt Ginny. There are also recipes at the end of the book which is an added bonus! I'm so excited to continue with this series and will read anything by Libby Klein!

Review:
The characters are well developed and well rounded. Poppy is a hard working caring person. She is willing to do anything to make sure that Aunt Ginny does not spend the rest of her life behind bars for a crime she did not commit. Poppy is a natural born investigator: she is nosy, can be pushy if need be and is persistent. I really enjoyed reading about the relationship between Poppy and Aunt Ginny, you can tell how much they love each other. Georgina, Poppy’s former mother-in-law, was a real pain and someone you love to hate. Even Smitty, the contractor, plays a role in this book. And Figaro, Poppy’s cat, is so funny and I think he stole the show. His “fainting” had me laughing through the whole book.
The writing style flows smoothly and it defines the characters very clearly by their actions and words. Through much of the book I felt like I was right there at the Butterfly House Bed and Breakfast in Cape May, New Jersey, watching the construction take place and listening in on conversations. This helped me to remain engaged throughout the whole story.
I really like that Poppy is not your typical cozy protagonist. She is older than most and she is not athletic or fit and trim. She struggles with her weight (who doesn’t) and she has completely changed her eating habits. She is portrayed realistically and I could see myself being friends with her.
The mystery was well crafted and not easy to solve. There were enough clues to sift through and many suspects to consider. Throw in some twists and turns and you have the ideal mystery. I did not figure out the culprit until it was revealed at the end, which is how I like it.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. It had everything I look for in a cozy: engaging characters, a cozy setting, lots of humor and a tricky mystery. I would give this book more than 5 starts if I could. Be sure to check it out. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.
WHAT A TURN-AROUND FROM BOOK #1! FANTASTIC BOOK WITH LOT-SA HU-MA!
PLOT: Once again we follow Poppy, although this time - pretty much right off the bat we're trying to determine who he mysterious 'snack bandit' is. It has been determined that someone has been breaking into homes and stealing...snacks! LOL. Poppy discovers who the Snack Bandit is, they are someone close to her - but this is just the premise. The greater mystery revolves around a do-gooder who runs a tenn drop-in centre, who has died and the poilce think the snack bandit is behind it. Poppy is sure they aren't so is going wokr furiously against the clock to uncover who the true killer is.
CONS: Only 1. There is a love triangle in this book that isn't working for me. Poppy hasn't told either that they're exclusive, but it still feels like cheating to me. Also there is a scene in the book that has the three of them together in a room and it was very 'machismo macho' and I just didn't like it at all. To quote Max (from drag race) "I...feel...very...uncomfortable...right...now...".
PROS: Pretty much everything else! The mystery was solid! Motivations well founded! Reveal well done! Laughed a lot throughout the book! Poppy's Sass is...mucho perfeco!
This is the second book in the series and I couldn't put it down. Poppy is such a fun character and Aunt Ginny is full of spunk. Aunt Ginny has gotten herself into a bit of hot water and naturally Poppy needs to help. The antics in this book will leave you laughing and the mystery will keep you guessing. This is quickly becoming my favorite series. I volunteered to read and review a copy of this book provided by the publisher and NetGalley.
Published in 2018. Poppy is a busy woman trying to get her gluten-free baking business off the ground and helping her aunt remodel her old Victorian into a bed and breakfast in Cape May, New Jersey. When her Aunt Ginny starts sleepwalking on her new sleeping pill prescription and helping herself to neighbors' snacks and knickknacks, Poppy is alarmed. When a local humanitarian who worked with troubled teens is found murdered, the police suspect Aunt Ginny. Poppy believes that someone's trying to frame her. She will need to work tirelessly to uncover the killer and keep her aunt out of the big house. I really enjoyed this cozy. It has a wonderfully puzzling plot which kept me busy guessing whodunit until the very end. The humor and romance littered throughout the mystery lightened the intensity and made this story a comfort read. The main character is an intelligent woman who survived tragedy and is rebuilding her life. Reading these stories puts a smile on my face. I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good story.
Poppy McAllister is working hard to make a go of her gluten-free baking business, and helping her Aunt Ginny remodel her Victorian house into the Butterfly House Bed and Breakfast in Cape May.
But the stress is getting to Aunt Ginny, and the doctor puts her on meds to help her sleep. Unfortunately they also turn her into a sleepwalker, and she is breaking into neighbor's houses to steal snacks and knickknacks.
Things seem harmless, until a local humanitarian who worked with troubled teens if found dead, the police, led by Poppy's high school nemesis, Office Amber, think Aunt Ginny is the killer. Poppy knows better, and she works to make sure people know Aunt Ginny might have taken midnight snacks, but she never took someone's life.
Just like in the first Poppy McAllister mystery, author Libby Klein mixes humor, great characters and a tightly woven plot to produce a great addiction to what is rapidly becoming one of my favorite series.
Poppy is very likable, and loyal to her family and friends. The way she goes into the investigation in an effort to protect Aunt Ginny is perfect. There are many different suspects, and reasons for the killing, and each one is flushed out perfectly, so you don't really figure out whodunit until the end. The only thing I would have liked was to have met the murder victim before he died.
I love feisty Aunt Ginny, too. Her antics always bring a smile to my face. Poppy's former mother-in-law, Georgina, adds to the storyline. Georgina is a hard character to like at times, but I really enjoyed the way Ms. Klein brought that plot line together in the end, and it made me wonder what would happen in the next book.
If you like your cozies with great food, humor, and a wonderful mystery, then the Poppy McAllister series is for you. There is also romance mixed in, enough to make a reader smile, but not so much that it is overpowering.
This is definitely a great series that is on its way up in the cozy world. I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.
It was awesome going back to visit Aunt Ginny and Poppy at Cape May. I think this may have been even funnier than the first book. I know I spent plenty of time snickering or laughing out loud as I read. There was no shortage of suspects, even though they focused on Aunt Ginny. I definitely hadn't guessed who the killer was.
Poppy's B&B was slowly making it into reality as her crew worked on fixing up the old Victorian of Aunt Ginny's. She ended up with more than house repairs on her hands when Ginny started sleepwalking and stealing food and little trinkets from the neighbors while taking her prescription sleeping pills. When she thought it was taken care of by switching to alternative medicine, Ginny was accused of killing a local humanitarian, and once again, Poppy felt she needed to investigate and prove her aunt's innocence. Not only did she have that to juggle, but toss in her deceased husband's mom showing up and barking out commands (since she was an investor in the B&B) and her two handsome boyfriends who finally met.
I could picture this all playing out, all these crazy things Aunt Ginny was getting into. At one point, she was on house arrest with an ankle bracelet and it was just so comical to read about her escape attempts. As much as I can't stand Georgina (Poppy's mother-in-law) it was hilarious to see the different names she called Smitty (the contractor) because she didn't seem to be able to remember his name. The mystery was a good one, lots of people weren't what they seemed on the outside, but finally the killer was taken down, literally, by of all people, Aunt Ginny herself.
For anyone that needs to bake gluten-free there are some recipes from Poppy's own kitchen in the back of the book, along with a little sneak preview of the next book, "Restaurant Weeks Are Murder" which, according to Amazon, releases in February.
I enjoyed this book, and especially Aunt Ginny, and while the author gave us Poppy’s deceased husband’s mother, she could be a thorn in her side, she kept me guessing as to what she would do next. While there is a murder here, and that is sad, but there are so many chuckles to contact the sadness. We also see a middle age woman, Poppy, and how she is now being pursued by two eligible men, and wonder whom she will end up with? Poppy McAllister is a woman to emulate, and loved how she goes about trying to help those she loves and cares about. While this may be my first book I’ve read in this series, it sure won’t be the last! I received this book through Great Escapes Book Tours, and was not required to give a positive review.
If I could give this more than 5 stars, I absolutely would. This book kept me in stitches the whole time I was reading. It was hysterical. Between Georgina and Aunt Ginny's antics, I was laughing through the whole book. Besides being entertaining, it was a really good mystery, too. Lots of twists and turns, very enjoyable! I seriously cannot wait for the next book!
Midnight Snacks are Murder by Libby Klein is the second book in A Poppy McAllister Mystery series. Poppy McAllister has her hands full with completing the renovations on Aunt Ginny’s Victorian home to turn it into the Butterfly House Bed and Breakfast, whipping up goodies for her gluten-free baking business, and keeping an eye on Aunt Ginny and her cat, Figaro. But then her mother-in-law, Georgina decides to visit to check on her investment and proves more of a hinderance than a help (as usual). Georgina has her own ideas for the B&B and is constantly undermining Poppy’s instructions to the contractor, Smitty. Thank heavens for Giampaolo and his soothing presence. Then strange thefts start plaguing the neighborhood where the thief is taking knickknacks and eating snacks. It seems Aunt Ginny’s new medications have caused her to sleepwalk. After a visit to the doctor, Poppy takes Aunt Ginny around the neighborhood offering apologies and returning the stolen items. The next day, police arrive to arrest Aunt Ginny for the death of Brody Brandt whose crime scene looks similar to those of the Snack Bandit as Aunt Ginny has been dubbed by the press. Someone is framing Aunt Ginny and Poppy intends to reveal the truth to keep Aunt Ginny out of the slammer. Poppy needs to work quickly, though, because Aunt Ginny is on house arrest which gives her too much time to plot mischief.
Midnight Snacks are Murder will have you laughing the whole way through with Aunt Ginny and Georgina’s antics. While this is the second book in the series, it can be read alone. I thought Midnight Snacks are Murder to be nicely written, to have a steady pace and smooth transitions. While Poppy is the main character, she is overshadowed by Aunt Ginny, Georgina and Figaro (the cat). I like finding out more about Georgina and the reason for her behavior. However, I do not see her changing her behavior overnight. I find Aunt Ginny to be too over-the-top. She comes across as crazy instead of eccentric. I did not understand why the local cops did not just stick her in a cell and throw away the key when she kept escaping house arrest. The city had a cop stationed outside the house (no city can afford to waste manpower in that manner). I was happy that Poppy actively investigated the murder. I am surprised, though, that people were so willing to talk to her (it is New Jersey) considering she is not with the police or a private investigator. I thought it was a breeze to finger the culprit, but others may be surprised when the solution is revealed (depends on your sleuthing level). I did not like the love triangle present in the story or the amount of time devoted to romance. I felt Gia was coming on too strong and seems too perfect (of course, there is his mother). The presents he bought Poppy were considerate and expensive. I was drooling over the description of cobalt blue Viking dual fuel range (I want it). I enjoyed the ending with Mrs. Galbraith (it gave me a good laugh). A couple of Poppy’s recipes are included at the end of the book. If you enjoy amusing cozy mysteries with comical hijinks, then you will not want to miss Midnight Snacks are Murder.
This is the follow-up book to, Class Reunions Are Murder. It is the second book in the Poppy McAllister Mystery series. Poppy is back in Cape May, NJ after the death of her husband and is busily renovating her Aunt Ginny’s home into a B&B. Poppy’s former mother-in-law arrives to “help out” with renovation ideas, driving everyone a little bit crazy. Poor Aunt Ginny becomes a sleepwalker after being prescribed medication to manage her anxiety during the mayhem. Soon, small items are being taken all over the neighborhood and Aunt Ginny’s sleepwalking is to blame! Before they know it, Aunt Ginny’s sleepwalking implicates her in a murder as well. Midnight Snacks Are Murder is a light, fun and upbeat cozy mystery.
This second installment in the Poppy McAllister Mystery series was a fun, entertaining read. This time around Poppy must clear Aunt Ginny's name as the primary suspect in a murder. Aunt Ginny is hysterical with her antics and Poppy should receive a medal for what she has to deal with while trying to clear her name. The characters in this series are all developing nicely and we get to know some a bit more in this book. I like how Poppy and Aunt Ginny complement each other. Poppy is still finding her self esteem and voice while Aunt Ginny is bold and brash. I'm hoping more of Aunt Ginny rubs off on Poppy without too much of the crazy.
The mystery was well done and kept me guessing until the end. I liked that the victim was neither all good nor all bad. It allowed the author to provide the reader with an array of suspects that kept me guessing until the killer's identity was revealed.
I voluntarily read an advanced read copy provided to me by the publisher through Netgalley.
This is book 2 in the Poppy McAllister Mystery series and is stand alone. I don't know how I missed book 1, Class reunions are murder but I've already got it on top of my TBR pile. Set in Cape May, New Jersey it's very apparent that Ms. Klein is familiar with the area. I lived there for 30 years and she is sport on with the seaside Victorian town. As Poppy and her Aunt Ginny are almost finished with their renovations on their B&B and the kitchen is getting ready for her baking business a new medication has Aunt Ginny sleep walking and picking up items in the neighbors houses. Now, 2 murders later she is the prime suspect. Well written, looking forward to book 3, Restaurant weeks can be murder. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This book is just as witty and hilarious as the first! I loved it! I gotta say, I hate love triangles so much and this book has a MAJOR love triangle. I really hope it doesn't become a running theme and hope it clears up in book 3!
I never thought an author can get better with her next book, but Libby Klein did. This book is cutely enchanting
This book too has Poppy in the forefront, but this time it is Aunt Ginny who is accused of murder, that too hitting a youngish man on the head with a baseball bat in his home at night. An 80-ish year old thin woman doing that is a thought scary!!
Poppy is a strong main character in this book who has 2 men fighting for her love (and her body) and her baked goods. Her aunt's home, now hers too, is being converted into a B&B, so there is construction supervisor Smitty who practically stays there. She is joined by her former mother-in-law Georgina who has invested in the B&B and who has an opinion about every single tiny detail.
Poppy has to manage all of above along with proving Aunt Ginny's innocence. The story has Poppy playing her role beautifully, her intelligence shines through in this. Her pastries, cakes, and cookies made me crave for them; she makes gluten-free ones (the author has made them sound deliciously mouth-watering)
This book has many humorous situations and dialogs. The best part is Aunt Ginny trying to break the ankle monitor or trying to break free of the house arrest. The excuses used on the unsuspecting chaperones are fabulous. I wish to be as adventurous when I am 80-ish as Aunt Ginny minus the murder and arrest.
Poppy and her eccentric team along with her cat Figaro, make this series a rocking cozy mystery!!
When someone starts breaking into houses in the neighborhood taking nick knacks and sweets, Poppy McAlister is shocked to discover that it is her aunt Ginny sleepwalking under the power of some new medication. However, when a murder takes place a couple of blocks away, the police zero in on Aunt Ginny as the culprit. The victim, unknown to both Poppy and Aunt Ginny, seems like he could have been a nice guy or a complete jerk. Which was true?
This book spent quite a bit of time setting up the premise, but once the murder took place, things really picked up. I enjoyed needing to learn what kind of guy the victim was since it added a nice twist to the mystery. The suspects were strong, and I could have seen any of them as the killer before we reached the climax. The love triangle is just heating up; I know which guy I am rooting for, but I could see myself happy with either of them at this point. I did find a couple of the characters annoying, especially Poppy’s mother-in-law. Aunt Ginny provides lots of laughs, and the gluten-free, paleo friendly recipes at the end sound delicious.
