Leftovers is a collection of short stories that are totally unrelated to each other. A couple are short-shorts while others are just merely short.
Enjoy a little bit of everything – murder, blackmail, embezzlement, excitement, action, betrayal, and of course, love.
So lose yourself for a while in a fun, quick, easy to read assortment of stories that will make you forget your troubles … at least for a little while.
The title says it all. Every author gets these "one-off" ideas, small scenes that play through the mind when trying to fall asleep, or which strike at the most inconvenient of times, like standing at a trough between quarters at a Panthers game. You know, when you don't have pen and paper handy... Sometimes these ideas turn into full-length novels, or the writer finds a way to incorporate the scenes into something already under construction. But many are just what the title proclaims: mental leftovers, like the little squirt at the end of the trough visit. You gotta do something with it or else it'll find other ways to bother you. The problem for many authors, even the best, is that their short stories don't always meet the standards set by their longer works. And we, the readers, are often left feeling a bit let down. And then...along comes Joe Congel. From the first story in "Leftovers," you're struck by the imagination of this writer. You understand what makes him so good at the Razzman-Private Investigator game. And you know, without a doubt, that if he hadn't turned to writing about solving crimes, he'd be the slick, well-dressed, ad-executive sitting in his posh office casually committing them. (Seriously, the plausibility and complexity of the crime described in the first story should make everyone suspicious of the men and women responsible for advancing their careers.) The other five stories are equally fun, though not as long. Snippets of time in a character's life, brought to the page for us to enjoy. Don't pass up this 5-star lunchtime read.
This book consist of short stories which I enjoyed, Was able to read the stores and finish them in the same day. Enjoyed reading about the different character, well written the author did a great job captivating.
Joe Congel is one of my favorite PI mystery authors. He has an easy style that draws me in from page one. These shorts are no exception. The topics intrigue. Whether it's falling from an airplane or a protagonist that's a hitman. If you haven't tried Congel, you're in for a treat. And what better way to try a new author than a book of short stories. Highly recommended.
