When a world of magic is the only thing you know, what do you do when it’s gone? In the dark city of Draconia, ruled by powerful mages, the only thing that matters is magic, and Fran is on the search. She’s caught the attention of some unsavory types. It doesn’t help that she has the most powerful magical object in the kingdom in her possession; an object many men have died to hold: a dragon’s egg. Trapped down a dark alley, with the threat of death coming ever nearer, a crack forms in the wall allowing Fran a way of escape to a place she’d only heard tales of. But will it be one that she regrets? She’ll enter a whole new world, but the threat of Draconia and the mages isn’t far behind. They want what she has, and nothing will stop them – not even a non-magical place.
Joanna Mazurkiewicz was born in Poland. She moved to United Kingdom when she was only nineteen and just finished high school. She had aspired to be a writer upon completion of the Harry Potter series but also enjoyed reading books like ‘Gone with the Wind’, ’Animal Farm’ and ‘The doll’. She graduated from Swansea University with a bachelor degree in American Studies. While studying in the UK she made a decision to start writing fiction in English. The “Whispers of the Sprite” is her first debut novel and she is currently working on other projects. Joanna lives in Cowbridge, a small town in South Wales near Cardiff with her boyfriend Bruce. She enjoys cycling around Welsh countryside some of which has become the settings in her first series.
Not a great read but interesting enough that I finished. The low rating is for the constant use by the author of the men winking at women. That was annoying and I felt a little degrading like they were humouring the women in the book to calm them down with a stupid wink. It was too much and too frequent.
The world building was good. The magic was not clearly explained enough. The love triangle a little unnecessary, but the supporting characters were fun nonetheless and I liked Avianna.
Don’t think I’ll read the next book if there’s one. Cliffhanger was good but not enough for me to want to read on.
I have read most of Joanna Mazurkiewicz's books, and I am a huge fan. It seems like every time I pick up her newest book I find myself saying it's my favorite. I'm going to say that again with this one! Her imagination knows no bounds, and her storytelling abilities are awe inspiring. Her world building, character development, and pace are some of the best. I have actually come to expect a certain level of excellence from her, and this one doesn't disappoint. Fran and her dragon quickly wormed their way into my heart, mostly because of Fan's snarky attitude, but also because she has a dragon. Who doesn't love a dragon? The way the dragons are dealt with in this one is very original, too. I read this one much too quickly, and I can't wait for the next book!
Not at all my cup of tea. Lots of over explanations and repeating of things that have already happened. Storyline is chick steals egg and goes through a rip into our world and tries to find her way back to draconia w the egg before it hatches to tell everyone the dark ones are evil which she says over and over. She makes terrible decisions and repeats everything three or four times over. The writing was stilted and didn't flow well. There was some crazy attraction between she and a half dark one that wasn't explained, another guy that wasn't flushed out. One moment there was action and then literally the next sentence had them sitting for a chat and this happened a few times. Made no sense. Had a cool idea but not executed well!
Dragons, urban fantasy, romance, and a dash of dystopian. It sounds like a combination that just shouldn’t work but I was delighted to find that it does. All those very different styles work together perfectly in this book. These are dragons like I’ve never seen them before. Even the way magic is handled in this universe is new and novel to me. I love Fran and her cheeky little dragon. Aly’s pretty awesome too. I haven’t quite made up my mind about Idris and Nicholas; both have their skills and both have some questionable tendencies. I guess I’m just going to have to wait for the next book to see how the rest of this plays out. I received a complimentary copy of this book.
Hatched is the first book in this new urban fantasy series with a bit of dystopian called Draconia World. The world building descriptions are well detailed & descriptive. The writing style fits perfectly with the genre & provides a unparalleled saga. This novel is based in two different worlds brimming with humans, dragons, mages, vampires, & magic. A intriguing plot with a bit of witty dialogue & well seasoned characters. Looking forward to reading the next novel in this series. I volunteerily reviewed an advanced reading copy of this novel.
I love this book! I thought this book is an excellent start of a series. Yes, it may be a cliffhanger but it is an excellently planned cliffhanger end. I love the story and the characters too. Francesca (Fran) is a thief from another world that somehow fell through to another after stealing a dragon egg. Fran goes through a lot just upon first reading the book. What a great heroine! I can't wait to see what is to come of this series. Definitely a recommendation to read. I received this book for free in an exchange for an honest review.
For Quesboth the Dragon has Hatched! I cannot wait to find out what is in store for Fran & Avianna. I have a feeling that we will be seeing more of Idris and what of Nicolas?
The characters have been written well but I found it hard to connect until later in the book. I like Fran's character but feel she needs to be more badass as she comes across a little lacking. Otherwise I love the context of the story and look forward to enjoying the rest of the series.
This is a good storyline but the editing really needs work. It was quite distracting the book seems to have had rewrites put in and not checked. It also has several "background or setting repeats" in it. It reminds me of talking to someone with dementia. The storyline is good and solid if the editing gets fixed I would give it a 4/5 star. I originally read the prequel to this series and it was wonderful.
While avoiding other books I came across Hatched. Being the dragon fan I am I gave it a try. The story line is good. Nothing goes as well as it was planned. Even though the title is hatched I wasn’t expecting her to actually hatch in our realm. Now I gotta wait to get the next. This story reminded me of another dragon trilogy that I loved back in middle school. Thanks for the good memories from past and future.
What a exciting storyline! I couldn't put this book down. Two worlds with vampires mages, dragons and magic. Fran was just trying to stay alive and eat so she became the person needed to steal stuff from others. Hard living and a dear friend that just died, made Fran a bad ass. Good book. I received a complimentary copy of this book.
This was a really fun read. I loved Fran and all her attitude. The plot moves fast and definitely keeps your interest. The author does a great job creating a very intriguing universe with lots of surprises and interesting characters. I am looking forward to reading more.
Joanna Mazurkiewicz has scored a home run with this book. Full of enough magic and parallel worlds to keep the reader turning every page until the very end. This book does contain a cliffhanger but I bet you will be scooping up the next in this series as fast as your fingers can type. Can't wait to read more about little dragon Avianna.
Interesting plot, characters you don't know what to think about, funny dialogues. This book is a Mix of Fantasy, UF, romance with a hint of something a little dystopian. I really enjoyed reading it.
What an outstanding story. You have everything you could want in a story of fantasy. Humans, magic, dragons and more. When magic is gone, what is to be done. Had to read it as quick as possible to find out what happened. Received a free book.
A lot of repetitive information which got old really quick. Interesting plot but poor execution. Thankfully a free book that quit reading 75% of the way through. I couldn’t take any more.
Oh my gods what a book! But arrggh I hate cliffhangers. Only for a book by Joanna would I put up with them. Her books are always so well-written and thought out. I am hooked on her books.
This book is about Francesca and her dragon egg. And how she ended up in our world. Now she is trying to get home but things keep happening to stop her. She has Nicholas to help or hinder her. I am not quite sure about Idris though, she has strong feelings for both but mostly it is Arviana she is concerned with. And who can talk to her from inside her egg. she loves Francesca so much she latched onto her the moment she stole her egg. Will she make it home before the egg hatches? Read and find out. You are going to love this new series!
Now before I ruin this for you I will leave off here. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. If you do like this book, please consider leaving a review. The Authors really like it when you do; they value your opinions too
My Thoughts: This book is a kind of "coming of age" story. It may not be so surprising seeing that this is the first book in the series. This is also my first Joanna Mazurkiewicz book and I like her author's voice. Having said that, for some reason I needed little breaks from it. So it may not be as compelling as I would have liked it to be. Still I trudged through the book because I like the premise. So, I am a dragon lover and a hatched dragon egg is irresistible! ... So pace-wise, this book wasn't a very quick read for me.
Plot is not this author's forté. There isn't much of one in this book. All the main protagonist did is run around stumbling from one danger into another and saved by sheer dumb luck. On top of that, Francesca has a tendency to be too stupid to live (TSTL). That soooo did not endear this book to me! But me, being a fantasy geek, was willing to overlook that for the dragon story that this book has to offer. However, if the TSTL persists and overcomes the goodness of the dragon story further down the line, then I may stop following this series at some point... which would be a pity, because I really like the dragon story! And to top that off, the ending is a huge cliffie!
Empirical Evaluation: Story telling quality = 3.5 Character development = 3.5 Story itself = 4.5 Writing Style = 3.5 Ending = 2 World building = 4 Cover art = 3.5 Pace = 2 Plot = 1.5
Finally got around to reading this ebook TBR. DNFed at 13%. Even though it’s in first person, I really dislike the writing style and I just couldn’t get into it. It is not a book that’s working for me, so I’m DNFing. 1 star.
