What this volume gives you: A curse bearing vampire also known as ‘The beast of Gévaudan’, a very crazy train, funny and romantic scenes, bit of backstory from a new character named Astolfo, forest and village setting, Jeanne's and Chloé's relationship and of course Chloé herself as a new character

The train was the highlight for this book
Really didn't expect that to turn out like THIS

Astolfo is so evil like he kills unnecessary people instead of just focusing on his task
Even though Astolfo was evil we get a small backstory of him and I wouldn't say I like him now more, but I like how the author sticked to the 'no villain is born, they are made' technique (I also think that's more realistic anyway)

Don't know the name of that man, but he literally just stole something from our main character, like excuse you?!
And will we get it back in the next volume??

Jeanne and Vanitas are this one couple that says they aren't in love but literally everyone can see they are, it's just so obvious. I mean they went on a date in the previous volume, so that's sealed for me now.
Also for everyone that are fans of them; They get some cute scenes in this volume too!

Disliked how back and forth this volume was. While we were already at the forest fighting the beast some other character just joined? Without explanation or anything? There were so few to so many characters in such a short period of time and they just joined like it was nothing. They just popped up. And the water in not mouth and then kissing instead of just giving the water bottle was so cringe.

In general there was almost no room of explanation and while I liked the fast-pacing I would have preferred if the volume would have had more chapters to clarify a few things before ending off.

*Warning, there will be mild spoilers for Volumes 3-5*

I think Mochizuki is hitting on areas I've wanted to see her expand after reading Volume 3. Vanitas seems to be a lot of self-loathing over something in his past (and, as we found out, is linked to his time under Dr. Moreau), and he doesn't seem to have as much interest in his own life rather than his pursuit for "vampiric justice" and Jeanne. Their relationship now has a new dynamic to it, which is both fun and slightly disappointing. Mochizuki isn't putting as much care into the women in this series as I'd like despite aspects of them working. It's also making Alice look weaker in my eyes, too, despite the fact I still enjoy her.

The plot development is getting underway, especially with Charlatan and one character's connection with them. I'd say it's giving the Big Event from Pandora Hearts, so this subplot should be fun to explore. I'm entertained with the current arc, too. The new characters seem intriguing and the fight scenes were fun! There's still some mild confusion with how world formulas work. Will Mochizuki clear those up? It's hard to tell.

My favorite part of this series, however, has been the queer baiting/pining. The fact I enjoy it as much as I do despite the fact Mochizuki's setting up Noe x Domi along with the ship above seems fairly ironic. But good god. There have been so many panels, so many jokes, and how she'll pivot from Noe going "I'm JeAlOuS tHaT jEaNnE HaD VAnItAs'S bLoOd" to "Oh, Domi, your blood is just as delicious." I thrive off the whiplash. That's faded since Volume 3, but rest assured I live every time there's a suggestive panel. Dante calling Noe Vanitas's "sugar daddy" also made me giggle. Props to Taylor Engel for that one.

Beautiful and hilarious all the way through. Mochizuki does a wonderful job at conveying emotions as well in a way that hits hard and fast. But.... I can’t bring myself to care about Jeanne? At all? After five volumes, and especially with the end of this one, I feel like she’s... a bit shoved in there, and continues to be.

Basically Noe worked up the courage to ask Vanitas if he could drink his blood and that made it 5 stars automatically

Also Jeanne and Vanitas kissed so that was cooll

HUH?? Literally what even is going on anymore.😭

They go to a village where a beast from long ago had hunted humans and is now back. Vanitas thinks its a curse-bearer and wants to heal them. There they run into Jeanne who is hunting to kill the beast while a chausser shows up that wants to kill vampires so much he doesn't care about killing humans either.

I will say I was captivated by what was going on but so extremely confused that my brain was starting to HURT.

Like I get hunting the beast in the snowy woods but then they time travel ??? or not??? And we meet several new characters.

We see signs of Vanitas' traumatic past and there's a whole weird ass scene with Vanitas and Jeanne in a cabin trying to warm up from the cold. Jeanne forces water down Vanitas' throat by kissing him like girl what?? I absolutely hate this relationship, I will never like it no matter how many times they try to shove it down my throat with the weird shit.

When Jeanne was stressed about getting her hat and parasol back because Domi picked them out for her and then in the next breath Vanitas was SPRINTING home because he got worried about Noé??? Then to add to the fruit salad we have whatever Roland and Olivier got going on??

I don't know if I said it before but Noé is absolutely babygirl.🥺 When he was all sleepy because he stayed up all night because he feared Vanitas would go off and ditch him. Then Vanitas was telling him to nap and how he'd wake him up when they got to the village.😭

Him walking around with the cat on his shoulders is 100/10, amazing and I am obsessed but I also get so stressed the kitty is gonna get hurt like can you just leave him at home this isn't the place for him !!!

The story line was a slight let down here. In fact just a few days later I'm struggling to even remember it to review it. We have some tie up of volume 4 and the introduction of even more characters such as a beast that Lord Ruthven in theory fought years ago which is now stalking the country side again and a young chausser who is so gung-ho let's kill vampires that he'll kill humans who get in his way. I'm not a fan of his.

Naturally they go to fight the beast and Vanitas thinks it's a cursed vampire that he can cure. That's his goal where everyone else's is to kill. I'm not sure but they might have time traveled or think they did? It wasn't clear.

The thing I liked best was the art and we get some visual clues as to Vanitas's unhappy past. I still want to read more but my patience for long fight scenes gets worse every year.

This volume starts light, with Jeanne unexpectedly enjoying her date with Vanitas, and Dominique getting jealous*. But soon hints of darker things start to surface, like Jeanne’s unusual blood-lust and hints that the “Beast of Gevaudan” (an actual historical “werewolf” incident) had some relationship to vampires…specifically, a vampire that Jeanne has a personal connection with.

There’s also an interesting incident with Noe awkwardly trying to figure out how to ask Vanitas if he might have the teensiest sip of his blood. Vanitas is surprisingly emphatic in rejecting that idea…probably because Noe is an “archivist” who would be able to read his memories! But what is it that Vanitas doesn’t want him to see?

*Of Vanitas, over “my Jeanne”, to be clear!

I’ve read this volume three times because of the publishing schedule. I always need to refresh my memory before continuing on with the next volume.

I like this manga a lot. I hope the next volumes are published sooner than later.

5/5👌🏼🌟

My favorite volume so far. I've seen the anime before this, but that scene with Vanitas and Jeanne...love it.

I love how complex of a character Vanitas is and I just love the art. And Noe always running off will forever be funny to me.
