What excited me the most about reading this book was the fact that the author was a childhood playmate- I remember playing tag, hide-and-seek and even having sleepovers. This was when we lived in the same neighbourhood. We didn't go to the same school but I got to know her well enough- our parents taught at the same school and both our families had had experience living in a different country. This may not sound like a review but it did help me understand and appreciate her writing better.

Dumped is a book about relationships in which the author explores her various being in relationships and out of them. I used to read Amal's blog (I still do, sometimes, when I remember to) and I've always admired her knack for writing. She has an attractive way of expressing herself through what she writes and when she writes about food... you can tell she's a real foodie and cook. I also loved reading about her travels as I have myself only been to one other country in the world. What exciting adventures she had, travelling for work and leisure!

I could not relate much to the relationship parts as I have never been in a romantic relationship myself. My only knowledge of them have bene through what I've read in books, other people's experience and television. So I found it interesting to read about the heartbreaks and failures taht come in attaching oneself emotionally to a member of the opposite sex.

I did feel that there were parts of the book which were a little jumpy- the author would write about one thing and suddenly jump into another thing without a smooth transition. I also felt that some chapters were not wrapped up well- left without a proper conclusion or ending. I did not, however, think too much about this as it was her first book and I wanted to be as forgiving as I could. Besides, the writing style itself made up for the lack of cohesion in certain parts.

The book ended with a little taste of what was to come next. I was sure her next book would be even better than the first.

Now, I have no idea where my copy of Dumped is but I do hope our paths (mine and Amal's, that is, not the book's! Although I do want it back) will cross again one day.

Rating - 3.5 stars, just because I think it could have been edited better.

I'm all for supporting local talent, and although I haven't read many of our homegrown masterpieces, this is easily one of the best. It's witty, charming, painfully realistic and incredibly relevant. I especially loved being able to relate to the setting and cultural references.

First of all, many thanks to the author for reaching out and sending me a copy of her debut novel. It's always exciting for me to read an English novel written by Malaysian author.

Now let's get into the review, there's a complete review on my blog, so if you want to get a full review, head over to this link: https://jessicabooksblog.wordpress.co...

What I like about this book:
1. How relevant, inspiring and precised the life lessons are.
2. Some of the situations or feelings described in this book is so relatable.
3. The travelling part written in this book just make me wanna book a flight ticket immediately!

What I dislike:
1. There were several repetitions occurred in this book, content wise and vocabularies wise, which I found a bit redundant.
2. Lack of coherence. (read my blog post to know the example)

Overall, it was a truly meaningful read, I'd suggest this book to all the ladies out there, especially the ones in their 20's. you'll find this book is so relatable and interesting. (Guys, you can pick up this book too ;) )

Dumped, by Amal Nadiah Ghazali.
#PuteriBookClub reading works by our own alumnae, October 2020.

I met Amal Nadiah Ghazali in November 2019, the morning after Seri Puteri's overnight Book Camp where the girls had a sleepover at the school library. She came for the session where our own alumnae were interviewed for a short forum, together with Ninot Aziz (82) and Bob Hazlina Aziz (86). The moderator was Roha Tahir (80), and so we had a varied generational vibe going on 😁. (However, I can't for the life of me remember which batch Amal's from... )

Aaaaanyhow. I enjoyed this book. I enjoyed Amal's writing. She writes well. Her writing style is fluid, I can almost hear her talking to me as though in conversation with a friend, with none of that bombastic verbosity that tends to run in Asian literature. She writes of her life experiences, of her feelings. She writes with maturity.

I started the book jaded. Me, 50 years old, wary of anything that smacks of self-help and motivational lit. Most times it's yeah-yeah-tell-me-something-I-don't-know, you know? BUT. The way Amal approached it, her perspective of the dating game, her analysis of each experience; I found that refreshing.

I find it refreshing that she is able to dissect every little life experience into smaller, more rational and digestible morsels. That in itself is a skill, and although such analyses can run circles and never result in anything, Amal has managed not to bore. I like that.

This book is part Eat, Pray, Love; part Bridget Jones Diary. I married my first boyfriend so I really can't say I know anything about the dating game, but here, here are glimpses I can relate to. Good job, Amal!

I might be biased because, I finished this book right after I have been dumped.

I bought this book with no intention of getting dumped. I stumbled upon it at Kinokuniya and flipped through the first chapter. Well, I was afraid that I could not stop thinking about this book if I decided to put it back on the shelf.

Reading this book felt like, reading an email from your friend. It is like you got updates from a friend who loves to reflect on whatever she faces. Well, this book somehow helped me in consoling myself. I would not say that it healed me but, it felt like there was someone who had experienced the same thing.

I love the travelling part so much! She made me want to book one way flight ticket to Vietnam. Especially, the way she described Halong Bay made me feel like I should not miss this place.

I would suggest this to someone who is seeking to be loved, someone who has been hurt by love or someone who is in love.

Amal is truly a writer who could write beautifully. I did enjoy this book and it was a relatable Malaysian thingy. Only downside to this is that it gets a little draggy in between.

A bit slow, but i guess it's fine. The language used is easier to understand, given that i was 14 when i read this book. Surely not for secondary school students lol

It's a fascinating book about the journey of the author's life experiences. Not only the events that happened in her life, also the emotions that she felt throughout the events. I can say this book is amazing and painfully relatable to me where I able to feel the emotions of the author. The presence of her best friend, named Akmal, closely reminds me to my best friend. Although I found the storyline is bit jumpy where the author wrote about one thing without proper transitions, it's still engaging story to read. Personally, this book teaches me to appreciate how beautiful life can be, to value little things and to love myself. It doesn't matter men/women, anyone can read this book.
