Lightning Blade (The Ruby Callaway Trilogy Book 1) & Bone Realm (Prequel)
This is actually a review for both this book and Bone Realm, which I got for free from Instafreebie but which is also apparently available (also free) from the author's website.
Bone Realm gives the backstory of Ruby Callaway and Lightning Blade is her first modern urban fantasy adventure in DN Erickson's series. As my son (who read this Lightning Blade after me) put it, "this is one kick-a** babe". I guess I have a weakness for "kick-a** babes" as I love this character (though, frankly, the supporting cast is pretty darn good too). These two books were very well written, full of action, and totally enjoyable. Combined, these books are a great start to the series. I'm going to rush off to read book 2.

Shadow Flare (The Ruby Callaway Trilogy Book 2)
I loved Ruby Callaway in Lightning Blade and fully expected to enjoy her in this book. Boy oh boy did it meet my expectations. I love kick-a** heroines and Ruby is the epitomy of that. Add in a well-written plot that totally rocks and a great cast of supporting characters and the result is most definitely another clear winner. Highly recommended.

Blood River (The Ruby Callaway Trilogy Book 3)
The Ruby Callaway Trilogy "...blends urban fantasy with dashes of cyberpunk, dystopian, and sci-fi into an explosive, original cocktail."
That's what the kindle blurb promised and boy did it ever deliver. Now, joyously (as it's done perfectly) but sadly (as I will miss this trilogy) it all comes to a powerful conclusion in Blood River. Our heroine Ruby is as kick-a** as ever, and not gonna be slowed down by little things like being shot or sick with radiation poisoning. Nope. She does what's needed and this book has it all, with a plot full of action, thrills and adventure, just the right amount of romance (hellooo Colton you perfect badass with a romantic core), great supporting cast (Argos, Kalos, et. al.) and a beautifully crafted world with its vampires, fey, evil mega-corporations and (lest we forget) the the source of ultimate power. I'm sad the story had to end, but at least it did so in grand style.
Highly recommended.

Other Stories
The other stories in this collection all provide details about Ruby’s relationship with characters important to each of the books the series (which are nice background for later books), with "Shadow Tempest" telling how Ruby met one of the characters in book 1, "Kentucky Clear" doing the same with a character in Book 2; and “Going Home” doing it for a character in Book 3. While clearly side stories, each one is also a pretty darn good standalone story all by itself.
This is a great series!! Ruby is a no-holds-barred bounty hunter. The series is well-written and almost impossible to put down. So much action, sass, chemistry, deception, paranormal characters, and magic that's difficult to know where to start. Ruby has depth and such a strong will that the reader almost believes that she is indestructible. She's like a kick-ass Energizer Bunny action hero! There are aspects of snark and humor and violence. This is a great read with amazing characters and storyline. I voluntarily read a complimentary ebook and this is my honest review.
It almost worked for me - but I just didn't care enough about the characters to really keep reading. I made it through books one and two, but just couldn't get the desire together to read the next one.
NOT kindle unlimited, and although got #1 on freebie day {may be permafree not sure} the books run 3.99 EACH, PLUS in this one you get additional 4 side stories, and all in one 'book'. Yes, I got it as arc but if hadn't would have considered getting the collection, because that's all 3 books for the price of what one usually costs THEN would get the 4 side stories AND get them all in one place. Bone Realm is actually the prequel, so if you want to read them in order find that one then go 1, 2, 3 -- see the very bottom for suggested reading order {and why}.
Supernatural bounty hunter Ruby Callaway has booked more than a few contracts over her long life. Some have been more dangerous than others.
The Complete Ruby Callaway Collection gathers all of Ruby Callaway's novels and stories - almost a quarter million words of urban fantasy action - in a single volume for the first time. Join Ruby, her trusty shotgun, entertaining allies, and her Realmfaring intuition on adventures to worlds both familiar (Earth) and foreign (The Weald of Centurions, The Fae Plains). Spanning over two hundred years, from her origin story in 1812 (Bone Realm) to her battle against the corporate monolith MagiTekk in the near-future (Lightning Blade), The Ruby Callaway Collection is not your typical urban fantasy. But, then, Ruby isn't your typical bounty hunter.
The Complete Ruby Callaway Collection contains all three full-length novels in The Ruby Callaway Trilogy: Lightning Blade, Shadow Flare, and Blood River. It also includes all four of Ruby's side adventures fleshing out her two century backstory, previously only available to subscribers of D.N. Erikson's newsletter. These include two novellas: Bone Realm and Going Home, and two side stories: "Silver Tempest" and "Kentucky Clear." {Bone Realm is basically 0.5}
NOTE: If you're new to Ruby Callaway, this contains everything (!). The side stories are just that - side stories that aren't essential to the main narrative, but feature moments alluded to during the main series. Of them, *Bone Realm* is the most "important" - it's Ruby's origin story, and the prequel to the entire trilogy. Some people prefer to read it before Lightning Blade, but you can skip it entirely if you prefer.
For reading order, the main series has to be read in order. As for the side stories, each one expands on Ruby's relationship/back story with one of the characters from the core books. So "Shadow Tempest" tells how Ruby met one of the characters in Book 1; "Kentucky Clear" does the same for a character in Book 2; and Going Home does the same for a character in Book 3. These, however, were all written to standalone; you can even read them without even reading a book in the main series.
There are weak problems with these books, but entertainment isn't one of them. Highly entertaining, however, many issues with dialogue, tense, linear progression, verbiage. It got to the point where i had to put it down for a while. Definitely worth the price tho. With a little more practice, and a buch better editor, under their belt, D.N. Erikson has the grounding for a great series.
Excellent well written series which I wish was more than a trilogy! The stories have action, mystery and even humor with hints of romance.Ruby and Colton have issues but do work well together when they cooperate. I recommend the series as you will find yourselves hooked and there are twists to this story!
I did enjoy this collection of stories to a certain extent, but I found them a bit too predictable. Ruby changed from being Rebecca far too easily, and the language used was not thought of in 1812 when the stories started. There were a fair few errors that needed tighter editing. I won't be looking for other work by this author.
I couldn't put the series down! I got the trilogy with several shot stories. I followed the author's suggested reading order and thoroughly enjoyed the characters and story. The story line goes from the past into the future, into other realms, and includes supernatural characters portrayed differently than I have ever read before. Great, fun read.
The trilogy was greater than the side stories in my opinion. I lost interest by the time of the second side story. I feel that the would be better if incorporated in the trilogy.
Even though I own a couple of the singles, I could NOT pass up an all-in-one . Loved the full books and novellas...now I'm hungry for More! I'm looking into the Demon Rogue Trilogy next.
Overall I enjoyed this series. It is an interesting take on mythical creatures which I found refreshing. I did find the storied merging of the fantasy realm with the in-book reality sometimes difficult, but this is a thoroughly enjoyable read, and Ruby is a singular character.
A little hard to get into, but once I did, I really enjoyed it. However, I often thought I didn't have as much background knowledge as I wanted. Putting the short stories and such in proper reading order would help. But please fill in the story lines.
So I'm currently reading the first Novella, which in the set is the fourth book if read in order. My opinion of this book began in a gray area. Certain aspects of book one are repetitive, and though this is by design it began to feel excessive during the read. However, by the end of the first book I was hooked, and read the next two books in the initial trilogy extremely fast. I haven't read Erickson's original series yet which follows a half demon protagonist, but I will be sure to do so after finishing the rest of these novellas.
I would say this series strongly compares to Jim Butcher's Dresden Files in terms of world building, but relative limitations Ruby Callaway has versus Butcher's protagonist makes for an interesting and at times the more exciting of the two.
Bought the set as it looked interesting. Read in the recommended order. I have read other books by Erikson but it had been a little while. Once again, reminded why I enjoy the author. The first book set up great excitement for the rest of series. After so many years, I thought I was over staying up halfway through the night to read a book. Finished whole collection in a very short time (to the detriment of getting enough sleep) No spoilers. Characters are developed and world is able to support a LOT of stories. Look forward to more!
