Captain Matt Peterson prides himself on being able to handle anything... until he winds up as the guardian of his baby niece, Lulu. Two years and six nannies later, his well-ordered existence is in chaos. Still, he’s all Lulu has. Except, well... there is an aunt...
Darcy Butler has spent the last three years in prison for beating up her abusive brother-in-law. Her only regret is that she didn’t hurt him worse and stop him from killing her sister in a drunken car crash six months later. But now, Darcy just wants to rebuild her life. Starting with finding her sister’s child.
But Matt doesn't want an ex-con with a record for violence anywhere near Lulu. Unfortunately, he can’t seem to keep away from Darcy, himself. Despite their differences, their chemistry is combustible... and the sex is incredible! Still, it can’t possibly last. Can it?
Growing up in the cold, wet, north of England, Nina Croft spent a lot of time dreaming of faraway sunnier places and ponies. When she discovered both, along with a whole load of other things, could be found between the covers of a book, her life changed forever.
Later, she headed south, picked up the perfect husband along the way, and together they volunteered to work in Africa. There they discovered a love of exotic places and a dislike of 9-5 work. Afterward they spent a number of years travelling (whenever possible) intermingled with working (whenever necessary.) Eventually they stumbled upon a remote area in the mountains of southern Spain and the small almond farm they now call home.
Nina spends her days reading, writing and riding her mare, Gencianna, under the blue Spanish skies—sunshine and ponies. She reckons this is proof that dreams really can come true if you want them enough.

The last in Nina Croft’s Cutting Loose series is the one I’ve been anticipating the most and, having spent time at her majesty’s pleasure thanks to her potential suitor’s brother, I was intrigued how Darcy’s path to a HEA would play out.
“You like the rules. I like breaking them.”
As I’ve come to expect when I pick up a book by Nina Croft, she’s somewhat turned stereotype on it’s head, bringing us a tattooed, kick-arse, MMA fighting heroine who should never have served time, and a straight-laced, law-abiding military captain who has found himself single parenting his toddler niece..who also happens to be Darcy’s niece. And whilst he isn’t overly happy at the fact she wants to be a part of her only surviving relatives life, there’s something about this feisty, stubborn woman that has him drawn like a moth to a flame.
“I want a bad girl. I want a bad girl who’s as desperate for me as I am for her. Who wants this as much as I do.”
Opposites attract, redemption and revelations all play their part in Darcy and Matt’s journey and whilst there’s some build up to the sexy-time, it’s worth it as in Croft-style it’s hot and heartfelt with a nice splash of humour. My only real grumble is that it didn’t feel particularly British which was a bit of a shame—I may be being picky being a Brit—but that aside Matt and Darcy ended this series on a high.

So what do you want?” “I want a bad girl. I want a bad girl who’s as desperate for me as I am for her. Who wants this as much as I do.”
The Bad Girl And The Baby was my most anticipated book in this series and turned out to be one of my favorites, too! I love me a kick-ass heroine, and it just doesn't get much more kick-ass then Darcy Butler, MMA champ. Darcy spent years in prison after she beat up her younger sister's husband. Unfortunately for her, said husband was also a corrupt cop. Losing her sister to a car accident while she's in prison was a punch to the gut. Not being able to see her orphaned daughter is the biggest one. Now that Darcy is out, all she wants is a chance to get to know the little girl. Unfortunately, her current guardian won't so much as return her calls.
In a delicious twist of events, the guardian happens to be the older brother of her late sister's husband. A case of mistaken identity finally land the two of them in the same orbit and boy do the sparks fly.
You have the prim and proper army Captain and the ex-con, combine the two, and you have undeniable chemistry. I loved watching matt cut lose and give in to his baser urges. I also loved seeing more of Darcy's softer side. Then there's the little hellion of a little girl that was just as scary as she was adorable, and you got yourself a recipe for one entertaining read.
Nothing crazy, fancy, or out of the ordinary. But it was fun, sexy, and an easy one-sitting read that I enjoyed thoroughly.

We return to the Cutting Loose series for the third and final book; The Bad Girl and the Baby.
Matt and Darcy are basically opposites in pretty much every way, he is in the military and enjoys a well-planned and regimented lifestyle, she’s still trying to get her feet back under her after being released on parole. Her reason for being in prison… attacking his brother. A man who was married to her sister, and who are now both dead due to his recklessness, leaving behind a toddler daughter, to Matt’s guardianship.
"We’re stuck with each other…"
Darcy wants to get to know Lulu, Matt doesn’t think she is a suitable influence on her, but as you would expect the story he has in relation to his brother, her sister and Darcy’s attack, and the truth are actually two very different things and as that truth emerges, so does the strength of the attraction between them.
"He doesn’t do marriage, and I don’t do love."
This was a really enjoyable all round romance, there was a bit of everything thrown in, plenty of emotions, a decent level of heat, and the addition of a precocious toddler rounded out the mix nicely. I always enjoy Nina’s contemporary romance/erotica offerings they are easy-going and generally low on the drama/angst scale, and this book was no exception.

Nina crofts latest installment to her Cutting Loose series and upcoming release The Bad Girl And The Baby did not disappoint.
I do love me a fiesty heroine and Darcy Butler was that in spades. She most definitely was a force to be reckoned with and has proved she's willing to do what it takes to protect those she loves. I really enjoyed her as a character! on the outside hard and cool but inside a sweet hardheaded lovable rogue who doesn't play by the rules. she was a complex characters with a ton of layers to her personality. she just kept surprising me through the the story as little bits of her were revealed.
Captain Matt Peterson was a character that I had to grow to like. he's a man who likes control and structure. his world is made in order so when he suddenly finds himself appointed guardian of his little niece it's safe to say his world goes to complete shit. I found that his judgement and general stuck up opinion had me fighting my connection to him. he's an alpha to boot but he didn't half stick his foot in his mouth on more than a few occasions making me want to junk punch the stupid out of him. I felt for him though and in all fairness he's a typical guy underneath all that asshole who just had a serious life change with zero time to come to terms with it.
Their relationship was turbulent at best but always held that red hot instant connection that set fire to the pages. They are complete opposite in personality one being the rogue and the other the rule follower so it's safe to say that they clashed on more than one occasion. they both had grudges they held and were most definitely not on the same page with all the facts. it was a rollercoaster of a journey for them both. They both has to learn to listen and play nice at the same time as control their ever growing attraction to eachother while maintaining a positive relationship for the sake of their niece.
I laughed, got sad, became angry and wanted to ring both of their necks. it was a freaking journey and neither one of them made it an easy ride. I enjoyed the hell out of them though. Great character growth between both hero and heroine. Great chemistry and a believable connection. Good side characters and a plot that sucks you in for the word go... This story has a little of everything to keep you going.

Darcy has a painful past. She thinks she failed her sister and now she’s trying to make it up by making sure her sister’s daughter, Lulu is living a happy and safe life. The only problem is that Lulu’s guardian, uptight, ultra-organized, ex-SAS, Capt. Matt Peterson won’t allow her to even visit her. Now Darcy needs to find a way to convince him that being a tattooed ex-con is not as bad as it seems.
I loved Darcy’s kick-a$$ character! I think the author did an excellent job of portraying the true nature of her character. She was tough and protective yet showed glimpses of vulnerability at exactly the right moments. Even when she was unsure or feeling susceptible, she still went ahead and made the tough decisions. Matt on the other hand cracked me up half of the time. He was supposed to be this stiff, uptight, almost super-soldier but when it came to Lulu and Darcy… well, let’s just say he became someone else entirely different but not in a bad way. He and Darcy formed some kind of bond, that as much as they tried to deny it existed, or not give it a name, worked excellent for me because it was that openness and honest attitude from both of them that made their nameless relationship work; as long as their meddlesome friends were not trying to dictate their lives. Argh! That really annoyed me, though! Darcy and Matt’s friends were always telling them how bad they were for each other and how much damage each would cause to the other. I mean, seriously, consenting adults? At least in the end, friends served their purpose and proved that without them life would not only be boring but also so much harder and lonely.
It’s not very often I connect this well with characters but this book was something else. Even Lulu was a delight to read. Those that have dealt with little kids will immediately understand and chuckle at what the characters had to go through with little Lulu. It’s not very often I give 5 stars to books but I think this one warrants it. There simply was nothing I didn’t like; if anything I could re-read this book just for the sheer pleasure of reading it again.
** I received this book at no cost to me and I volunteered to read it; this is my honest opinion and given without any influence by the author or publisher.***
The Bad Girl and the Baby by Nina Croft is such a good read.
The storyline drew me in from the first page and held my attention until the last. The story was fast paced, engaging, well written and I really connected with Matt and Darcy. They had amazing chemistry and loved watching them fall in love.
Overall, The Bad Girl and the Baby is a great read and a great addition to the Cutting Loose series. Each book can be read as a standalone and I highly recommend them all.
The Bad Girl and the Baby is probably the last book in the cutting loose series by Nina Croft. All the gals have found their men and happiness after their years in prison. Darcy's book was interesting and since it had Lulu I couldn't help but like it. I disliked the Diana part, but it wasn't that bad. I don't understand how Lulu went from the always crying baby to the more quiet version of hers. I also feel like she was neglected after she served her purpose as a way to bring Matt and Darcy together. I wanted more time with Darcy Lulu and Matt as a family, to be honest. Matt and Darcy wasted too much time by not being together.
I liked Darcy. She is feisty and the kind of person I would want as a friend. She sacrificed years of her life when she helped her sister and even forgave her when she practically betrayed her. Darcy is the kind of woman I would want to have my back. I liked her a lot. Matt was a good guy, but I wasn't able to like him much because he was trying to do everything properly in order to achieve what he had in his mind as the best course for him and Lulu and in the end, he almost lost his happy ending because of it. I liked the way he made up for it though.
Overall the book was good and I have mostly positive feelings about it. I would recommend it.
4 Stars for The Bad Girl and the Baby (audiobook) by Nina Croft read by Brie Jackman.
The love for a young girl brings these two opposites together. And that’s just enough of a chance for them to realize that they need each other in their lives. Things get steamy as they find out that they have more in common than they thought.
Matt, due to his natural personality and former job, has always known he can handle any situation. And, up to a point, he'd been right. What changed? He suddenly became a guardian to his niece, Lulu, two years ago, and his carefully structured world has been turned upside down. He loves Lulu with his whole heart, but he knows he needs help. Unfortunately, he's gone through six nannies, none working out for one reason or another. He's Lulu's only remaining family, except for her aunt, her mom's sister, but with what he's heard about her...yeah, that's not an influence Lulu needs in her life.
Darcy doesn't regret spending three years in prison for kicking her abusive brother-in-law's butt. What she does though is not ridding her sister of him for good. Instead, six months later while Darcy was sitting in jail, her sister died in a car accident, her husband being at fault. Darcy is now free, but not of her guilt, and wants to a fresh start. Her first step is finding her niece.
Matt sees Darcy, and knows her history, and deems her unworthy of being near their niece. But the chemistry between them is a different thing all together.
As Matt and Darcy begin spending time together, and Lulu loves the little family they make, Matt still struggles with Darcy's past actions, even as he's falling for her.
Can Matt accept Darcy's record and move past it, understanding why she acted as she did? Will Darcy get the new beginning she's yearning for? Will Matt and Darcy find ways to compromise and adjust to the changes in both their lives? Is a HEA possible?
One-click now and follow along as two people must fight their own personal issues to reach for the love waiting to be theirs.

The Bad Girl and the Baby is a sweet (and sexy!) story about family, redemption, and finding love. It's the last in the Cutting Loose series, but definitely works as a standalone (how did I not know of this series before? I must go back and read Regan and Summer's stories!)
Even though this is the second book in a row I've read with a military guy taking over the guardianship of his young niece (and it's hard not to see the appeal of a big, strong man a bit over his head caring for a little girl, amirite?) this book has a totally different premise, with a heroine--the baby's aunt--still on parole after nearly three years in prison for beating up that same baby's abusive father. I liked that Darcy didn't make any excuses for her past--even though she technically did "do the crime" there were definitely extenuating circumstances there--and that Matt was so open to looking into the truth of what happened, once he actually sat down and had a conversation with her.
I loved that both of them were so determined to do what was best for LuLu, and the whole opposites attract aspect of their relationship made every scene between them that much more delicious. Ms. Croft did a fantastic job of showing that the two of them couldn't possibly be together, yet allowing them to find a way to achieve the impossible in the end.
Happy sigh! (Or maybe I should give a quiet "woof!" instead? ;))
Rating: 4 stars / B+

The Bad Girl and the Baby by Nina Croft finishes off the Cutting Loose series and gives readers Darcy’s story. I will say that I loved this series and how completely different it was from others that I have read. I completely enjoyed the heroines being ex-cons and the friendship between the three of them. It takes a strong hero to deserve these women and now it’s Darcy’s turn to find herself a hero who will love her for herself.
Darcy got the crap end of the stick when she tried to protect her sister from her abusive husband. She ended up in prison and since her sister is dead, the only family she left is her niece. The problem is that Matt, the brother of the abusive douche, now has custody of the baby and doesn’t want Darcy anywhere near her. He thinks she’s a bad influence and doesn’t want her near them. Here’s the thing, Matt doesn’t know Darcy and she’s not backing down.
Matt and Darcy prove that opposites attract. The only thing I didn’t like was Matt’s friends. They kept telling him he deserved a certain type of woman and assured him Darcy would be bad for me. Thankfully, Matt is smarter than them and gave in to his heart and scored himself the bad girl. Overall, an enjoyable read!
I️ just loved this series. I️ was hooked from the very beginning and I couldn’t put this book down. Darcy and Matt might have been suspicious and had wrong assumptions of each other but when they get to know each other they realize how wrong the were. Darcy might have tried to hate Matt on principle especially since he looks like his brother but the instant attraction that she feels towards him could not be ignored. Matt might like his life organized with disciple and structure but once he meets Darcy and gets to know her he realizes that opposites do attract. I’m glad that they had their HEA. I️ love Nina Croft’s work and I️ can’t wait to read more of them.

Just released from Prison, Darcy Butler has one goal in mind; to seek out her niece Lulu to insure she is well taken care of and happy. Railroaded and incarcerated for three years for trying to protect her sister from an abusive husband has left her broken. Guilt shadows every day for her because while she was away her sister was killed while a passenger in a car driven by her drunk husband Stephen. Although Lulu lost both of her parents she has adjusted to a life with her uncle Captain Matt Peterson. Croft has created strong characters in Matt and Darcy along with a unique and different romantic plot. Enjoyed this author's skill. This is book 3 in the Cutting Loose series and it features Darcy, Matt and who could ever forget the little tornado, Lulu. I love strong female leads. Darcy is tough on the outside but soft and insecure on the inside. Matt is perfect on the outside but a little scared on the inside. Both are this way because of their pasts. They do say opposites attract and these two couldn’t be more opposite! There are two things they’re in sync with and the first is Lulu, their niece. She’s hell on wheels and she loves fiercely. The second is sex, with each other. These two set the sheets on fire!
Great story with awesome characters! The story line had great flow. This author is amazing and I can’t wait to read more from her!
Such a great story and easy read. I felt so sorry for all the shit Darcy has been through. After loosing her parents, wasting 3 years of her life in jail just for protecting her sister from an abusive husband, and then her sister getting killed in a horrible accident. Then not being allowed to even visit her niece. I was so glad to see some things finally go right in her life. I am so glad I had the opportunity to read the books in this series. I have really enjoyed each of them. Darcy, Rachel, and Summer will be friends for life and each deserves their happiness. Thanks NetGalley for the arc in exchange for my honest review.
I couldn’t put this book down, at first. Later, I wanted to throw it down. 2.5 stars.
Good Points: -The plot was strong. The conflict was very realistic. As a result, you could understand each character’s actions and emotions. -I liked the background each MC had. The author doesn’t cheat her way through the story with a billionaire.
Weak Points: -the hero has low emotional intelligence. As a woman without self esteem issues and enough pride to get pissed at offense, I found some of the heroes actions off-putting. At times, he treated the heroine like she had no emotions or feelings to hurt. How could he think that he wouldn’t offend her by spending time elsewhere? (trying to avoid spoilers) -the “bad girl” label ruined the romance. She wasn’t a “bad girl” and I was annoyed by his inability to say so until so late in the book. It caused her and others to view her as bad. This pissed me off. But, it was difficult to hate him because she didn’t seem to think much of herself. -By the end of the book, I wanted the heroine to value herself and the hero to show her that he did too. That didn’t happen. Other characters had to step in and save the relationship in the last part of the book. -I hate emotional drama or distance in the last part of any romance. It leaves little time to cultivate the feeling of HEA. So, the ending felt false. He needed to work for it. He never had to in this book.
OOOH I love me a kick ass girl! Add the fact that she is MMA fighter and went to prison for breaking an abusive arsehole's arm...Yeah I'm girl crushing!
Nina Croft has created a pair of characters where opposites attract and watching them develop and see how they make a relationship out of it was great. I loved that they both focused on Lulu and that she was a central part of what was important. The fact that she was a terror in her toddler years makes it better.
I really liked that Darcy was as strong as she was, and that Matt liked that about her. Matt himself was no slouch. I liked that he was organized he didn't make it a priority in his relationship with Darcy. He was accepting of her even though they differed on things. He was alpha enough to hold his own with her but soft enough to welcome her. I enjoyed seeing a character with that sort of depth.

The Bad Girl and the Baby (Cutting Loose) Nina Croft struck gold with her Cutting Loose series. The message behind the series is a powerful one. We all make mistakes, but it's not the mistake that shapes us but the lessons we learn from them. Out of desperation, these women have made some hard choices and pay the price for them. Will their lives ever be normal again. The Bad Girl and The Baby is Darcy's turn to reveal her truth. Struggling with sorrow, guilt and determination, she is ready to take back her life and find her only living relative. The problem is Matt Peterson keeps getting in the way. How is an ex -con supposed to redeem herself in the eyes of the man that holds her future in his hands? Give him her heart and trust him to do the right thing. Darcy and Matt are as gritty as they come with a lot of baggage standing in the way of a happy ending, but the thrill is hoping they make it to the other side.
Captain Matt Peterson prides himself on being able to handle anything...until he winds up as the guardian of his baby niece, Lulu. Two years and six nannies later, his well-ordered existence is in chaos. Still, he’s all Lulu has. Except, well...there is an aunt...

REVIEW: 3.75 stars--THE BAD GIRL AND THE BABY is the third and final instalment in Nina Croft’s contemporary, adult CUTTING LOOSE erotic, romance series focusing on three friends-Summer, Regan and Darcy – three women who met in prison while serving sentences for crimes of passion. This is gym owner and MMA fighter Darcy Butler, and SAS Captain Matt Peterson’s story line. THE BAD GIRL AND THE BABY can be read as a stand alone without any difficult. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary but I recommend reading the series in order for backstory and cohesion between the three former inmates who became the best of friends.
Told from dual third person perspectives (Darcy and Matt) THE BAD GIRL AND THE BABY follows Darcy Butler as she struggles to gain access to the little girl her sister left behind. Three years earlier Darcy was sent to prison for beating up her sister’s husband Steven-a man who routinely abused and battered Darcy’s older sister; and the man who would eventually destroy all of their lives. Fast forward to present day wherein Darcy has yet to meet her two-year old niece, now in the care of her former brother in law’s brother. Enter Captain Matt Peterson, the man with whom Darcy will fall in love. What ensues is the building relationship between Matt, Darcy and their niece Lulu, and the potential fall out when Lulu’s paternal grandparents, back in Australia, offer a permanent home to the child with whom Darcy has fallen in love.
Darcy Butler is a tattooed fighter; a woman who isn’t afraid of physical confrontation but a woman who battles between her head and her heart. Falling in love with Matt Peterson meant he had the ability to break her heart, a heart Darcy believes was hardened upon the death of her estranged but beloved sister. Matt Peterson knew only one thing and that was the woman who claims to be his niece’s aunt is the same woman he believes to be psychotic stranger. Matt’s attraction to Darcy is tempered by the prior knowledge of Darcy’s assault against the brother he barely knew, and her physical appearance that would not be accepted as an army captain’s wife.
The relationship between Darcy and Matt is strained by Matt’s preconceived notions about his brother’s former sister in law-a woman he believes to be a drug, addled fighter who routinely goes around beating up people she doesn’t know. As the story line progresses Matt begins to see the ‘real’ Darcy Butler, a woman whose heart had been broken too many times in the past; a vulnerability that was slowly breaking down the barriers around our heroine’s heart. The $ex scenes are seductive and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
We are re-introduced to the previous story line couples including Nathan Carter and Regan Malloy (Falling for the Bad Girl #1), and Nik Masterson and Summer Delaney (Blackmailing the Bad Girl #2), as well as Darcy and Matt’s two year old niece Lulu; Darcy’s friend and fellow fighter Sam: attorney Elinor Saunders; nanny Diana Prescott; Matt’s meddling friends Angie and Gary; Matt’s parents Jolene and Gareth Peterson, and his younger sister Hannah.
THE BAD GIRL AND THE BABY is a story of opposites attract / enemies to lovers but struggles with a spate of preconceived notions from a number of the story line characters including our leading couple. Through a series of lies told by his brother Steve, Matt believes Darcy to be a danger to Lulu and everyone he loves; and Darcy is a woman who sacrificed everything to protect a woman, who in the end, died at the hands of the man she claimed to love. A lack of communication, and the fear of rejection and loss keep our couple at arm’s lengths but none more so than Darcy Butler who fears losing the man and the young child she had grown to love. The premise is dramatic and heartbreaking; the characters are energetic and spirited; the romance is emotional and intense.
Darcy Butler is ready to get on with her life now that she's been released from prison, and her first order of business is to convince Captain Matt Peterson to allow her to see her niece. However, getting him to see her isn't easy, so she decides to get creative in her attempts to meet him. Yet, the moment she meets Matt and he grants her what she wants most, she finds herself wanting to spend more time with him. Will Darcy get her chance at happy ever after, or will she allow her past to keep her from being with Matt?
The first two books of this series are absolutely wonderful reads, and this story was no different. Really, right from the beginning, I found this story very engaging and Darcy's determination to meet with Matt sets the fast-pace of the story. Will Matt give her the time of the day and get to know her, so she can meet her niece? Will Darcy be able to prove to Matt that she's not a violent person, despite going to prison for assaulting his brother? However, it was from the moment the hero and heroine come face-to-face for the first time that had me completely hooked, as there's instant chemistry, even though Darcy does her best to ignore it because of what his brother did to her and her sister.
As for the dialogue, it was intense due to the main characters back stories, especially that of the heroine, as going to prison for protecting someone she loved and being betrayed by that person couldn't have been easy to deal with, but I liked that she's bounced back and is doing everything she can to honor what her sister asked of her. However, the dialogue wasn't all intense. There was some really good playful banter between the hero and heroine, as they're complete opposites and Darcy enjoys pushing his buttons, especially because he's so organized and what the heroine classes him as 'stuffy'.
Both the main characters are relatable, likeable and so entertaining that I could not put this book down. Darcy is resilient and courageous by confronting Matt and asking for what she wants, even though she knows it's not going to be easy because of her arrest record. Luckily though, she doesn't go down without a fight, even if it means making Matt realize that his brother wasn't a good man. I also liked the tight friendship she shared with the two women she met in prison and that they would do anything for each other, especially when it comes to giving much needed advice as Regan and Summer push Darcy to realize that she deserves happiness as much as anyone else. Yet, what I liked most of all about the heroine was the growing bond she shared with her niece and that she would do anything for her, especially if it means having to let her go so she can have a better and happier life.
While the hero, it hasn't been easy for him becoming the guardian of his niece, but he's done the best he can. Certainly, he's kind and caring and will do anything for the adorable little girl, which is proven by the gift he gives his niece towards the end of the book. I also liked his determination to win over the heroine, even knowing that she might never feel the same way about him as he does about her. Will the heroine see how right Matt is for her before it's too late? Yet, what I liked most of all is that he gave Darcy a chance to prove she's good enough to be in her niece's life and that she's not normally a violent person. She only did what landed her in prison to protect someone she loves, even though her protecting that person backfired.
Overall, Ms. Croft has delivered a very satisfying and compelling read in this book where the chemistry between this couple was strong; the romance heady and showed how good this couple are together; and the ending had me loving that the hero realized what he wanted before it was too late. No way would he lose the two people that have come to mean everything to him. However, it was the epilogue that wrapped this story up perfectly, as Darcy and her two friends deserve the happiness they've achieved after everything they've been through. I would recommend The Bad Girl and the Baby by Nina Croft, if you enjoy the enemy to lovers trope or books by authors Samanthe Beck, Rebecca Brooks, Sami Lee and Joya Ryan.
I read this for the SBTB reading challenge’s 'least liked subgenre' category, which for me is exactly ‘military hero romance with ex-con heroine forced proximity because of plot moppet orphan in the family.’ To clarify, no disrespect to men and women in the military. Only, I dislike the use of the ‘military hero/heroine’ character in an unrealistic, overly-sanguine manner designed mainly for titillation. That life is not shiny and golden, people.
So what is behind this gloriously purple cover and risible title?
The story is set in England, with an incredibly and unapologetically badass heroine, a hero in the military, and an orphaned niece. The main characters are connected through their siblings’ marriage. Heroine Darcy’s younger sister married Hero Matt’s brother. Alas, Matt’s brother was a abusive, and Darcy was sent to prison for injuring him while protecting her sister. Darcy has now finished her sentence, and unfortunately the abusive drunk hubby and sad sister have died (he drove drunk and killed both himself and his wife in an accident), and their daughter Lulu has been orphaned.
Darcy wants to be involved with her niece. Matt has full custody. Since they have not met, both believe the worst about each other. Matt’s asshat of a brother had created an exaggerated and embellished picture of Darcy’s character as unstable and violent. Matt is refusing to allow any contact between Darcy and Lulu. Darcy despises Matt’s physical resemblance to his brother, and worries that the brothers’ personalities might also be similarly abusive. So, there are some obstacles to overcome.
The initial insta-attraction between them is balanced nicely by mutual adversity. They recognize that they are attracted to each other, but there are many things to work out. Darcy is hesitant to get attached, because she has lost her entire family except for Lulu. Matt has a strong protective instinct, which at times almost goes into jealously possessive. He recognizes it, realizes that behavior is dangerous, and Darcy does not let him get away with any excessive behavior. I believe that Matt was stronger than his brother, who was unable to control himself and went fully to the dark side. Abusers/batterers usually are weak people. But he works towards being a decent man, and respects Darcy.
The story is fast-paced, and the POV changed effectively between the main characters; there was no confusion about whose brain we were inside. Darcy is a MMA fighter, but there is no graphically described violence. There are very detailed sexy times, and very little angst considering the subject matter.
I liked the conflict and resolution between the characters. Things were talked about, and after they met, they worked maturely through the initial ‘big misunderstanding.’
The only downside is that I generally dislike orphans as a plot motivator in romance.
Overall, a nice quick read with characters that I respected and real-life complications.
Now that she’s finally out of prison after three years, Darcy Butler is ready to look for her niece Lulu. An MMA fighter, Darcy now works in a gym until she decides what the future will hold; she looks every inch the bad girl, but she must act the proper lady to convince Captain Matt Peterson to let her see her niece, nothing more. With a criminal record, she is not hoping for more. He is Lulu’s uncle has been her legal guardian since the three year-old’s parents died. Darcy had been carefully keeping track of Matt, but when they meet in person, she did not expect to find the man she hates to be so appealing.
I thought THE BAD GIRL AND THE BABY sounded different, but I had no idea how wonderfully clever it would be! Nina Croft’s Darcy is a fabulous heroine: she is unapologetic, honest, direct, and a woman of convictions; she has an unusual occupation which is not just a convenient excuse for storyline purposes; she is tough and she loves being physical. Matt was such a wonderful hero as well: he is not a manwhore! Hurrah! He is in the Army, Lulu has quite disturbed his very ordered life, and Darcy upends it even more. I loved their backstories, their rich backgrounds; I loved that they were no misunderstandings, and that Darcy and Matt opted to deal with the situation like reasonable adults, and I loved that there were no clichés in THE BAD GIRL AND THE BABY; not one! Neither is the other’s type, but the situation forces them to look at each other as people, because they both want what’s best for Lulu. And this is what makes them realise that they like each other, which leads to a very believable and extremely satisfying romance.
I applaud Ms. Croft for giving us an unvarnished and realistic view of abusive relationships for both sides of the fence, and how difficult it is for everyone concerned to do something, how it impacts so many lives in different ways. On the other hand, there are some delightful and amusing scenes of people who have no clue as how to be with a small child. In THE BAD GIRL AND THE BABY, absolutely nothing went as I expected, and it was absolutely brilliant! It was a very quick read, because I had to know what would happen and I loved those people! The writing is remarkable smooth and easy; the pace impeccable; and the ending just gorgeous; THE BAD GIRL AND THE BABY is absolutely fabulous!
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
Turmoil, compassion and lust are just a few of the exciting things Nina Croft stirs up in the latest book from her Cutting Loose Series! The characters we've met previously in this series have been really fun with intriguing back stories, and this one is no different! She understandably has a major chip on her shoulder, and he's so uptight he might never even give her a chance ... but all bets are off when she reaches out and gives him the info he needs to open his eyes and let her be in her niece's life! A really great read ... it's feisty yet has a warm, gentle side as well ... it's steamy, yet endearing at the same time ... and best of all, it'll steal your heart from start to finish!
Darcy Butler is fresh out of a three year prison sentence for pounding on her abusive brother-in-law. She only wishes she had done more permanent damage that would have stopped him from killing her sister in a drunk-driving accident a few months later and leaving her niece an orphan! She promised her sister she'd make sure LuLu was okay if anything ever happened to her, and she's trying to do just that ... only hear guardian's lawyer keeps putting up road blocks!
Army Captain, Matt Peterson has been juggling a lot for the last two years since he became the only family little LuLu had left and turned his world upside down to take her in. He knows her aunt has been trying to see her, but he doesn't want an ex-con with a record of violence anywhere near her, so he's been letting his lawyer handle it. When Darcy tracks him down and sets him straight on exactly what happened with his brother, he's left with no other option than to let her at least see their niece. As he watches her fall under adorable LuLu's spell, he can't help but feel attracted to the woman she actually is, and all that she's dealt with to be the person she is today!
This is the first book that I've read by the uber talented Nina Croft, so I'm a bit miffed at myself for coming so fashionably late to the Cutting Loose party! Especially since I devoured The Bad Girl and the Baby cover to cover. Darcy Butler has a lot of demons that plague, especially after spending 3 years in prison for beating her abusive brother-in-law up. However, that's not what she regrets, it's the fact that she didn't do more harm to keep him from killing her sister in a drunken car wreck. Now days, all she wants is to check on her niece to make sure she's safe. Captain Matt Peterson is very organized & prides himself on being able to handle anything, that is until he got custody of his niece LuLu, which has thrown his world into serious chaos. Adding to that is Darcy coming into their lives trying to see LuLu, not to mention opening his eyes about how his brother really was. But the worst part is the insane attraction he has to her. That's more than I wanted to say about the actual story, but the insane layers to this fast paced storyline made it impossible. I LOVED Darcy so much, so needless to say, I wanted to hurt everyone who looked down on her, including the mouth watering Matt, as he was one of the worst. That's not to say that their chemistry wasn't off the charts hot, because it made the sexy times SCORCHIN HOT, but in everyday life, he made some questionable douchey decisions. But that entertaining cast of secondaries, especially Darcy's friends, kept me laughing hard. And the final point, was the twist that I never saw coming but made me sing colorful metaphors all over the place. I LOVED this story, and CANNOT WAIT to read more of this author! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Great little book about two people who don't think they deserve love. My first from Nina Croft and I have to say I it will not be my last. Matt and Darcy are brought together by the sometimes incorrigible but always adorable Lulu. Their niece is now living with Matt since his brother (her father) and his mother (Darcy's sister) were killed in a car accident. They meet in a bar, not so accidentally and the fireworks go off almost immediately, even across a crowded room.
As they come to grips as to who they are to each other, there is definite chemistry that can't be denied and their agreement to be acquaintances with benefits is a recipe for disaster. But these two stubborn souls can't stay away from each other and almost lose not only each other but their Lulu.
What I loved most was that the author went in a very unique direction, with having Darcy only recently being out of prison. For a crime that is a little too close for comfort in she and Matt's situation. There is a ton of misunderstanding and misinformation about both of them that they need to reconcile in each of their minds. And as they do, feelings emerge that neither of them wanted nor expected.
This is a no-nonsense type of story that I happily devoured. I went in blind and now I need to go back and read books 1 and 2 in the series. Those feature Darcy's fiercely loyal former cellmates who found their own unexpected happy.
I'm glad I took the chance on this new-to-me author. She writes well even though the 3rd person narrative through me at times. Well worth my time I couldn't imagine giving it anything less than 5 solid stars!
This Cutting Loose Series has been without a doubt one of my favorite by Nina Croft. Each of the heroine had extenuating circumstances that led to their jail time. I like how they do not blame others but take responsibility for their actions. Then each woman works toward a better and different future. The Bad Girl and the Baby gives us Darcy’s story. I liked this fierce woman who is the protector that Captain Matt Peterson should have been. Is she perfect, not at all, even a little broken too. However, she was easier to like than Matt, but he did wise up over time, losing his self-righteous attitude, so he grew on me.
Like her friends, Darcy has to prove that she is more than the stereotype. All the heroines in the series are complex but Darcy may be the most. I enjoyed reading her story as layer by layer the author revealed this character. Lulu was easy to love, with her well-being being a great motivating relationship starter for Darcy and Matt.
The Bad Girl and the Baby is my favorite book in a favorite series by Nina Croft, just as I said earlier. I can highly recommend this book along with the previous two. Each book is connected but is also a stand-alone.
An ARC of the book was given to me by the publisher through Net Galley.
I got hooked on Nina Croft’s writing when I picked up the first book in her paranormal series The Order, “Bittersweet Blood”. (Warning: Do NOT buy the box set featuring the first three books plus a novella unless you don’t want to get a single thing done until you’ve read them all — they are that addictive.) Her latest release is a great contemporary with an interesting plot. The two main characters aren’t looking for love, but end up finding it while struggling with several issues. The couple, Darcy and Matt, come together through the love of their orphaned niece, but neither is very comfortable dealing with a child, especially one so spirited. I appreciated that both characters dealt with their doubts and fears in being able to handle that kind of responsibility. As for the romance...! Darcy and Matt have an intense connection and when they get together it is sexy as hell. It was fun to watch these two navigate from strangers with misconceptions about one another to hesitant friends to scorching lovers and, eventually, true partners. Now if you’ll excuse me, there’s a new book in The Order series to devour!
This is the first book of this particular series by Ms. Croft that I read, so given that there are two books before this one, it didn't deter me from enjoying the book. There is enough background information from the two previous books provided in the book to enjoy the story without reading them.
The premise of this book can be summarized in a few sentences: Bad Girl is aunt to Baby. Baby is the niece of Hero. Hero and Bad Girl are attracted to each other. Hero and Bad Girl try to resist...but in the end, they fell in love. Of course, there are some obstacles to overcome along with a wonderful set of secondary characters like the two couples from the previous books.
Overall, it was a nice story filled with a cute Baby, a Bad Girl with a heart of gold, and a wonderful Hero that is Book-Boyfriend material. From a personal preference, it would be better to read the whole series in order, but one can read this book without reading the others. This is another Ms. Croft book read and enjoyed.
Provided a copy by the author for an honest review.
Loved this book! This is a fast paced contemporary romance that kept me turning pages just as quickly as possible. Darcy is the bad girl who just got out of prison and Matt is the good boy soldier who got custody of their shared niece after her parents died and while Darcy was in prison. Matt believes Darcy is nothing but trouble and is committed to keeping her away from his niece. Unfortunately, while his facts might be technically accurate, he's gotten it completely wrong...
This is a must read for fans of the genre. While this is part of a series, this is a stand alone novel, however its so good that you really owe it to yourself to read them all. Put this one at the top of your list, you'll be glad you did.
