Forging a new quest, Maddie and Alex unite the desert runners in order to find enough food to feed the Tromoal through their birthing. But there’s descent into chaos at the mayor’s farm on the discovery of a stolen Tromoal egg and the fact he’s hoarding zombie cattle. Maddie's choices are limited, but her fight isn’t.
Dawn Chapman has been creating sci-fi and fantasy stories for thirty years. In 2005, her life and attention turned to scripts, and she started work on The Secret King (TSK), a 13-episode science fiction television series, with great passion for this medium.
In 2010, Dawn returned to her first love of prose. She has been working with Coach EJ Runyon, who has encouraged her away from fast-paced script writing, to revel in the world of TSK and Letháo as an epic prose space journey.
This year, her experience of working with producers/directors from the United States and Australia has expanded. From drama and science fiction to action, Dawn has built a portfolio of writing, consulting, and publishing.
That's about all that's needed to get me to read a book. Just put a dragon on the cover :)
This book doesn't really have a dragon on the cover, nor is it truly a book about dragons, but I did not care much. Going through first two books in Puatera Online series was enough to make me want to read the third.
And it made me desperately want to read the fourth. But, not because it was awesome.
I believe it is okay to lose the sight of a story at hand when you care about the grand picture. Writing then usually becomes a wrap-up - loose ends are tied up and focus of the story is turned to new events.
"We're done here" was pretty much it. But the universe is set very well, characters are rich, there's a lot going on... So let's make use of it and look forward to new problems to solve. And that's exactly the problem I had with the Desert Storm. There were no deeper problems or any real action. It was simply a continuation of previous troubles which got resolved little by little. A wrap-up.
Game mechanics were not used, or exploited, anymore. Actually, barely even mentioned. This became painfully obvious when the story built up the tension for the upcoming encounter with a character who managed to become a Demon Lord. While everyone fought for their lives in the past months, he became much more powerful. Not a single soul knew what happened there. Nice! A mystery to solve!
There was a classic raiding party formed - A tank, healer, DPS, items and buffs all around, the whole shebang! Wow, raiding!
And then it all ended with such an anti-climax that it took me a full chapter to recover. "I'm glad to have all these powerful people around me," the main character stated at one point but failed to add "and not do anything with them."
The character around whom the big part of the main story revolved got sidelined to a level of no more than a background noise. He was still mentioned frequently but nothing was being done about it. The "He is still relevant" reminder was served every once in a while.
- We must hurry! Go, now! - But we need time to prepare and they may know we're coming! - No, we have a surprise on our side!
... and then they get ambushed.
The book really looked like a rushed job on many occasions. I still liked it, as I liked all the characters and their stories, but it became increasingly more difficult to summon enthusiasm when some of them started behaving illogically.
This review may sound a bit harsher than intended but that's not because the book is bad. I'm just conditioned at this point to expect more so disappointment was strongly present. Still, it's a good book and narrated passionately by Andrea. That made up for any shortcomings.
I'll be looking at a sequel with a new set of eyes. It better be damn good, like the first two books were.
Desert Storm (Puatera Online #3) by Dawn Chapman (Goodreads Author), Andrea Parsneau (Goodreads Author) (Narrator)
Verdict Expected much more from it. Runtime 03:23 Overall Performance Story
FACEBOOK LINK: https://www.facebook.com/EyesOpenRevi... *this review contains a few spoilers* Can...we...say...favorite book in the whole damn series?! This book was the PERFECT mix of world-building, questing, and everything else that books one and two might have lacked a little bit in. Not to mention, the quests in this book were EASILY the ones that held all of my attention the easiest. First of all, Alex. I just...cannot...with that. What happened to him hit me WAY harder than I expected, especially that scene where Maddie was just about to let him go. Everything was so *vivid*, the imagery was absolutely perfect. I don't think a character's death has effected me this much in a long time. I ended up loving Alex a lot more than I realized in the first or, heck, even the second book. That shit was not okay. I did not allow that. Moving on (.-.), the twists in this book were absolutely wild. Especially Dail. I just...GAH. When Dail was first introduced in the first book, I was NOT expecting his involvement to be as extreme as it was. And, even though he was a villain, I loved him almost as much as I did Alex. His character and plot-line, that is. Everything about that situation was - well, it was everything. I can't even wrap my head around it. He and Alex were written so, so well, they are/were, probably, my favorite characters - shooting higher than Maddie, even. Just, ah. I love their plots so much. I'm not going to gush about every single individual plot line in this book because otherwise this review would be way too long and I don't want to spoil EVERYTHING, I just had to make comment on Alex and Dail because they are/were my favorite parts of this series, but I will say, as I did above, that this book had the perfect mix of everything. In-game awareness, especially, that I feel like #2 was somewhat lacking. I know it's a weird thing to miss, but that's what, I feel like, makes this series so unique. I will say that I have absolutely no idea in what direction the later book(s) will go now that my two favorite plot points are resolved (I think). I'm kinda scared, but also excited. As always, this book is a high recommendation for anyone who enjoys LitRPG - reading #1 and #2 is necessary, of course, but this one...this one was definitely my favorite. :D
As with the other books in this series - I'm hooked. Chapman writes of a world that I would both want to live and play in. That's pretty great for a LitRPG series.
Desert Storm - aka Puatera Online Book 3 - continues the story from the first two. Maddie is performing unlike any NPC anyone has ever seen or played with and must continue to make the hard decisions to keep the players (visitors), other NPCs, and maybe even the whole world from collapsing.
Desert Storm wasn't as emotional as book two was but it was a close second. There were a few scenes (post-portal for example) that were just absolutely heart wrenching. Chapman has my emotions all tied up in this series and I've heard that it's going to take an interesting turn in book 4.
Maddie is such an interesting character (the play on words intended). She finds out a lot about herself in this chapter and it's been fun watching her grow and become her own in the three storylines. Her arc has been one of the more enjoyable ones in the LitRPG stories I've read so far.
I can't imagine what will continue to happen, but I'm sure that Chapman is hard at work trying to make this world come alive even more. I can't wait for it. I've really enjoyed the first three books.
I had requested and received audiobook version of this book for free from the narrator / author / publisher, in exchange for an unbiased review.
This series just doesn't give up and keeps giving. I had loved book 1 and 2 and now book 3. Each of these books were better than the other. (yes, that's an infinite loop.) I love that each of these books are novella length so that I can complete each of them in one sitting and then pick up the next book to continue where the previous book finished.
The trend continues with this book 3. It starts where book 2 finished. Here we see a journey of self-discovery and preparation for the big war, which has been slowly building up so far. Maddie's character grew so much since the first book. Love that character arc. The journey journey itself was soo much fun and entertaining. Dawn Chapman has a good knack for telling beautiful stories in spellbinding way. Can't wait to listen to the final installment of book 4.
Dawn Chapman remains one of my favorite independent authors thanks to her amazing ability to craft fascinating new worlds and ideas. The MMORPG our heroine and hero live in has been fleshed out across two books with a plot that merges the real with the virtual. I was fully satisfied with where the story went and hope she'll return to this setting sometime. Fans of LIT Rpg and sci-fi will enjoy this, I think. The characters are likable, the plot direct, and the developments believable (for a simulated world). I liked the narrator too.
These are the third to fifth books I’ve read/listened to by this author and I can’t wait to listen to another. I first listened to Jessica’s Challenge then Dahlia’s Shadow. All the books in the series are ones I would listen to again.
Maddie is a self-aware NPC. Although she has a difficult time going against her programming, it is possible. Throughout these books, Maddie learns a lot about the truth about herself (one of which I found awkward at first, but then it started to make sense) and the world of Puatera. These books have a story thread separate from the other Puatera books, until near the end when we gets hints how they will merge.
Book 1: Desert Runner Maddie is a Desert Runner. She accepts high risk retrieval jobs for pay. She’s getting paid well for this job, but soon learns why all other desert runners before her declined this job. Constantly in pain from an old trauma, she has little choice now but to take her unwanted passenger with her, across dangerous Tromal breeding grounds, to his destination to complete this job.
Book 2: Desert Storm Maddie and Alex learn the food supply usually given to the Tromal is not enough to get them through the birthing season. The local people’s lives are now at risk. After learning more about the Tromal, Maddie gathers the other desert runners in an attempt to gather enough food for them. To add to the troubles, they find a stolen Tromal egg and there is a herd of zombie cattle.
Book 3: Desert Born Maddie finds out that, after she’s safely delivered Alex to his destination, he’s been beaten up and not completed his quest. Feeling compelled to help, she assisted him on his quest. They soon learn there is little choice but to go back to the desert and search out the Tromal or everything they know shall be threatened.
These are the first to third books I’ve listened to by this narrator ( Andrea Parsneau ) and I would listen to another. She does a great voice for Maddie. In fact, she does all the voices really well. Her narration brings the characters and story to life. The books are great, but her narration is also why I could hardly stop listening until the books were done.
There are no explicit sex scenes, excessive violence or swearing.

Volume three picks up as the Tromoals leave to take the infant King safely back to their home. The noble egg was stolen one-thousand years ago and presumed lost. Maddie discovered its existence on the Mayor’s farm, rescuing it. As it hatched, the Tromoals realized what it was and immediately left for home. This left Maddie and a loyal group of Runners to care for and protect the almost three-hundred Tromoal eggs. The cattle that the Runners had collected would feed the newborn once hatched. Prior to the Tromoals leaving, Alex had agreed to transfer his soul or life energy into the weakened egg of the Matriarch. This would strengthen the life force of the egg which is to be the next clan heir. This would also prolong Alex’s life in-game, which was coming to a speedy close in RL while ushering in a totally new and remarkable experience. Maddie continues to discover who and what she is in relation to the game. She’s not an NPC, not a visitor, nor a player; what is she? The game coding, not as tight as it should be, permitted some NPCs to make modifications to their skills and/or stats that were never intended, allowing them to attain that semi-sentient status. Maddie, with the help of a couple of friends, has taken full advantage of this bug. Meanwhile, Maddie makes plans and gathers allies to eliminate the forces plotting against the Tromoals. Review: This installment in the series picks up right where books 1 (Desert Runner) and book 2 (Desert Born) leave off. Desert Storm is focused on the prep for the war of all wars…evil vs good. Desert Storm is intensely action packed. Maddy is trying to gather all supplies, soldiers and anything else she can think of or her team to prepare. Maddy is forced to do something tragic and painful to her personally, again sacrificing herself, for the sake of hopefully benefiting the future of her world. Maddy gets a couple of opportunities to leave her virtual world for the ‘real world’ (London to be exact).
This novella ends with a cliffhanger leading you to the next (and from what I hear might be the final installment). I shouldn’t have to tell you this, but I will…THIS IS A MUST READ if you enjoy the sci-fi/fantasy genre! I absolutely love Ms. Chapman’s work and let’s just say this isn’t my normal genre that I devour but I do devour this series and I can’t stop…it’s just that damned good!!
Like the second book in the series, Desert Born, Desert Storm didn’t quite live up to the awesomeness of the first book, though it was still enjoyable.
More of Maddie’s world is fleshed out, and we finally understand a bit more about what’s going on (though certain details left me as confused as Maddie).
Even though it feels like more of the details of the world could have been expanded on and investigated, same as with the second book, I’m interested in seeing what happens next. This is a light LitRPG, where there are some mechanics present, but the majority of the story is focused on Maddie’s continued adventure in figuring out who she is as she seeks to protect the tromoal.
OMG I never thought I'd find a book series better than Outlander. Sure, ok, it's a completely different genre. But maybe it's because I am a gamer. But this story spoke to me. It's every gamer's dream to end up in a game world like Miss Chapman describes. I was so hyped about it I actually even posted it on Facebook urging others to read it. And the only other time I've ever done this was with Outlander. Well I personally didn't read it, I listened to it. And in my opinion, no matter how good the story is, in audiobooks the narrator Makes or breaks the story. This narrator fully made this story. She's amazing. This book does not belong to a game, the game world Puatera is fictional. But you will perfectly be able to orientate yourself in the story. A big A+ from me.
Audiobook review: Book 3 finds Maddie trying to rally trips to assist her quest in saving the Tromoal (Dragons) eggs. The journey is filled with emotions, team efforts, self discovery, action, and fighting. Great victory for the team at the end! Lots of mini plot twists introduced that I’m sure Ms. Chapman will expound on in later books! Love these short stories! I received a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
GameLit light More of the relationship between the digital game world and the dragons is revealed, and Maddie's new role. The notion of an NPC gaining sentience and that there might be link to physical planes, all linked by an online VR game is well done. Recommended. Looking for the next book in the series.
I love the build up you created! This was a fantastic book! The emotional roller-coaster you put into this book was insane! I'm really excited to read your next book!
I'm enjoying this series And I'm hoping to read the next ones I'm enjoying read the 1st 3 took me about a week to read them1st book Felt like it was longer than the other
Man I was sure this is a trilogy, now I absolutely know it's not which is good and bad. Good because it's an awesome story! Bad because I want to know how it ends. Yes this is one of those creation that grabs you from the beginning and that you can't wait to finish it, but when you do you get sad because you want more, in short which ever it goes it always suck :-). I truly love this series as you can already tell. Hoping that number four is on its way, beside a great story, all those twists and turns blow my mind away, which is a great part of why I love this series especially on this third book which totally twisted me around all the way to the last minute ! There is nothing else you can ask from an author, a good story which you can't predict or know where it's heading is magic which only a few authors have mastered accomplishing it ! As is with the first two books, performances is perfect on this one to. There is absolutely no way that I can find not to recommend this book or the entire series. I can't see anyone not liking it so I'm not worried recommending it, I truly can't see how anyone won't enjoy this series it's absolutely impossible!!!
