Frank is an orphan who runs away from the orphanage is search of his parents. He gets transported back in time and meets a bunch of cavemen who speak without using any vowels.
The art is very good. All of the people talking without using vowels can get very confusing especially if they speak in short words.

After being exchanged by three previous families Frank is due for an appointment with a fourth potential family, Mr and Mrs Fugly (I kid you not! 😆). He “drops in” to the meeting with the director of the orphanage, who accidentally admits she doesn’t know what happened to his parents. Deciding to run away (again!) Frank is caught by the gardener who tells Frank the truth, that he found Frank when he was about a year old. The gardener shows Frank a map of where he found him then sends him on his way.
After a journey on foot to find his parents, complete with some pretty funny falls, directionally challenged Frank finds himself sucked through a portal of sorts and winds up in prehistoric times. There is no phone service, no internet and apparently vowels haven’t been invented yet, so the locals tlk lk ths (talk like this). It does take a bit to get used to the way they talk and because of this, FRNK may not be the best comic book for reluctant readers. There’s one swear word in this book but your kid most likely already knows it anyway and its use is really funny.
This is the first comic in a series of three so there’s the inevitable ending just when you’re really getting into it. I’ve read this comic book twice now. The first time I was so frustrated by the lack of vowels in the prehistoric world that it took my attention away from the story. Having said that, after a break and coming into it knowing about the vowel situation, I really enjoyed reading this the second time.
There’s a fair amount of humour I missed the first time around and this time I really focused on the awesome job Brice Cossu has done with the illustrations. The expressions in both present and past add to the humour of the text and the details in the landscape, plants and animals are wonderful.
The vowel situation will be off putting for some readers, although it’s only for a portion of the book. If you can get past this, you’ll find a series that has a lot of potential. Besides the humour and time travel, there’s action and fight scenes, along with the mysteries of where Frank’s parents are (if they’re still alive) and whether Frank will go home in the end. I suspect he may find home in prehistoric times but I haven’t read past the first comic so that’s only my gut feeling.
What this comic proves to me is that if you’re not entirely sure what you think of a story it’s completely fine to cleanse your reading palate with other books before you attempt a reread. Had I reviewed this book straight after I read it for the first time you’d be reading a very different review. I’m definitely interested in getting my hands on the rest of this series.

Czytanie komiksów u mnie wygląda tak: absolutnie nic nie wiem o fabule, wiem za to, że spodobała mi się okładka i w ciemno biorę niektóre wydawnictwa.
I kurde - strzał w dziesiątkę! Nastoletni Franck po raz kolejny ucieka z sierocińca, nie chcąc trafić do kolejnej rodziny zastępczej. Dostawszy wskazówki od starego przyjaciela ogrodnika udaje się na poszukiwanie miejsca, w którym ten go znalazł, a poniekąd na poszukiwanie swoich rodziców. Na miejscu jednak wpada do jeziora, w którym znajdował się magiczny portal... i przenosi się do prehistorii.
Mówcie co chcecie, ale kreska jest przepiękna, fabuła bardzo fajna, jest zabawnie, a Franck to naprawdę cudowny dzieciak, choć ciągle pakuje się w kłopoty. Potrzebowałam dokładnie tego, idealnie trafia w moje gusta i nie mogę się doczekać tego, co jeszcze przede mną ♡

The adventure of FRNK - as the tribe calls the boy, since they don't use vowels - despite being aimed at teenagers 12-17 has an unusual complexity in its time line, that reminded me of Netflix's TV series "Dark", and that makes this graphic novel quite appealing and surprising.
WARNINGS: partial nudity, mild violence

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review!
What happens when a boy, looking for his parents, lands in prehistoric times? Well first of all, learning the natives vowels, as they are all talking without those. And how that sounds/looks? Well, I guess you probably texted enough times and were too lazy to spell out words. There you go. ;)
I wasn’t sure about our MC in the first 3 pages (though I can understand why he didn’t want those parents, one didn’t seem interested in kids, the other was a bit too sports-obsessive, and the other had just too many puppies (I never thought I would say this)), but quickly (probably about the time when he decided it was a great idea to sneak away ending with him hanging for dear life over a greenhouse) I liked him, and with each page I found him more and more interesting and sympathetic.
I loved how he first thought he was at a set (given what he saw at the cave entrance), but how he quickly realised that maybe, just maybe, this was all reality. And like so many typical stories set from modern to prehistoric his first worries were the fact there was no internet and he would miss the release of a game he liked. Yup, priorities straight.
I loved that when the people learned vowels, their first word wasn’t their names, oh no, it is a classic and it had me in stitches. :P
The art was fabulous. Unlike so many graphic novels were at times the art doesn’t look too pretty when the characters are in motion, this one captures everything perfectly. I really have zero complaints about the illustrations. They are perfect, especially the expressions which had me rolling off my chair a few times. The style is a bit reminiscent of another comic, but I can’t for the life of me think which one it was.
It is just a shame that this volume is only 58 pages. I definitely want more of it. I want to see if our MC can find his parents (do they perhaps live in this age, if yes, are they still alive?), and I want to see what his plans are for the cavemen (and cavewomen). Is he really going to start learning them how to farm? Is he really going to show them how life is supposed to work? Boy, I can’t wait!
All in all, highly recommended and I hope that a second volume will come out soon.

Me ha gustado mucho. Los dibujos son geniales y la historia es sencilla, pero tienes ganas de seguir leyéndola. He visto que son 8 cómics, los intentaré leer.
En este primer tomo, no se cuenta mucho. Franck es un niño huérfano de 13 años. Vive en una institución y ya ha pasado pasado por 3 familias de acogida. Cuando se le gestiona ir con otra familia, Franck toma la decisión de buscar a sus padres. Él pensaba que estaban muertos, pero parece que hay una posibilidad de que estén vivos...

I’m not sure what to say about this. I didn’t hate it. The art was okay, so was the story but I couldn’t really connect with the story or the characters.
It didn’t captivate me…
I don’t think I’ll be reading the next issues… Or maybe I will to see if I get into it more.

I really did not like this and had to put it down less than halfway through. Thought it has beautiful art work, the fact that most of the characters don't use vowels when they speak got REALLY annoying REALLY fast. Also, it's hard to root for a protagonist who is just so obnoxious and unlikable!

Un début très prometteur avec un personnage drôle ! L’idée de voyager dans le temps et de perdre les voyelles, c’est inédit, j’aime le concept. J’ai hâte de lire la suite qui apparemment est topissime !

Maybe I'm just a touch too old for this. Might appeal to a younger teen/tween audience who like a Naruto-esque protagonist (kind of obnoxious, not exactly dumb but not the brightest). Our hero, a troublemaker-y kid living at an orphanage, runs away from his latest attempted adoption after finding out his parents may not actually be dead and falls through a time-warp to prehistory (but a Croods-type goofy prehistory, not a realistic one - sorry, history-buffs). Rescued from a saber-toothed tiger by a grumpy caveman, he soon stumbles into a conflict between rival cave-tribes. It feels like it's going to be a white-saviour-style story (most of the cave-people seem white, but you know the feel) - for example, his first order of business one the dust settles is to teach the primitive savages vowels (which haven't been invented yet) and change all their names to something he can pronounce easier (I know it's intended as a silly 'these cave-people are just like us' joke but...*cringe*), with the sense that he (though kind of a fool by modern standards) will be a leader to these primitives with his (even very limited) superior modern knowledge.
Again, I am not the right audience for this and likely won't continue with it (my TBR being as tall as it is), but it might appeal to younger teen-tween reluctant readers who are interested in action and silliness but don't care too much about depth.

[Recensie van Album 1-6 (Le Début du Commencement - Dinosaures)]
Zeker een van de betere stripreeksen die in Spirou heeft gestaan, de voorbije jaren. De eerste paar delen zijn vertaald naar het Nederlands, maar daarna is die vertaling stopgezet. Redelijk zonde, maar echt verrassend noem ik het niet: het duurt nogal een tijdje voor alles op gang komt. Zo doorheen de eerste drie verhalen gebeurt er uiteindelijk redelijk weinig dat het verhaal echt vooruit helpt. Je krijgt dan wel heel wat setting en personages waaraan aandacht besteed wordt, maar naar echt interessante gebeurtenissen is het wel wat zoeken... Dat is een beetje zonde, want op zich had het wel wat sneller kunnen beginnen. De eerste drie à vier delen dienen voornamelijk om alles op poten te stellen, afgewisseld met een aantal idiote situaties waarbij Franck alles in het honderd stuurt. Het doet eigenlijk meer denken aan een soort stripversie van The Flintstones, alleen verwacht je in feite wat meer.
Ik begon zelf zo'n beetje de hoop te verliezen bij Album 4, die het einde van de eerste cyclus inluidde, maar toen kwam het einde van dat deel. Bam. Opeens kreeg de reeks heel wat meer potentieel. Je krijgt een ferme onthulling te lezen, een grote plottwist, en die maakt heel wat goed. Er komt ineens een hele lijst vragen in je op, en al krijg je vervolgens wel eens hier en daar een antwoord, de albums erna maken er vooral toch gebruik van om dat vragenlijstje nog wat uit te breiden. Hier is heel erg veel gaande, dat is wel duidelijk. En ik ben heel erg benieuwd wat er nog allemaal gaat komen.
De tekenstijl heeft duidelijk manga-invloeden. Cossu amuseert zich er heel erg mee; in de eerste delen is het naar mijn mening soms net iets té karikaturaal en/of extreem, het is aan de scherpe, puntige kant... maar dat heb je natuurlijk wel vaker met manga. (Een van de redenen waarom ik geen zin heb om veel van die klassieke manga-reeksen te lezen.) Doorheen de albums wordt zijn stijl wat afgeronder, en dat bevalt me wel meer. De kleuren zijn wel de hele tijd erg knap!
Het was ook in Album 6 (dat dus niet meer in het Nederlands verkrijgbaar is) dat ik een soort echo merkte tussen Franck en Kenza die Torak en Renn in Avonturen uit een Magisch Verleden van Michelle Paver ook hebben. Hun manier van doen tegenover elkaar komt erg overeen. Het is ook tof om te zien, want de relatie tussen hun tweeën heeft doorheen de tijd ook duidelijk vorm gekregen. Ook de andere personages zijn erg aangenaam om over te lezen.
Al bij al zeker een topper. Ik zou vijf sterren gegeven hebben als het begin iets sterker was geweest, dat is volgens mij toch echt wel een gemiste kans. Maar als je zin hebt om een keer een goede jeugd-, fantasy-, en mysteriestrip in het Frans te lezen (met niet al te moeilijk Frans), dan is dit zeker een goede keuze.
Al moet ik je misschien wel even waarschuwen wat dat 'niet al te moeilijk Frans' betreft: rsprnklk sprkn Knz n d ndr nwnrs vn d prhstr zndr klnkrs, ds hl vl vn d tkstbllnnn n lbm 1 zn r ngl vrmd t (volledige versie: ). Dat is even wennen, maar als je een beetje een basis hebt in het Frans lukt dat ook wel. Of anders moet je het eerste album in het Nederlands lezen (want dat gaat dus wel!) en daarna overschakelijken naar het Frans. Trzynastoletni Franck to wychowanek sierocińca, który niestety nie może znaleźć właściwej i kochającej go rodziny zastępczej. Jego sytuacja powoduje, że postanawia on opuścić sierociniec i wyruszyć na poszukiwanie swoich prawdziwych rodziców. Trafia on na budowę prehistorycznego wesołego miasteczka, zlokalizowaną w sercu pobliskiego lasu. W wyniku pewnych wydarzeń zmienia się całkowicie jego życie. Przenosi się on bowiem w czasie do okresu, kiedy to na świecie istniały jeszcze dinozaury. Nastolatek przyzwyczajony do nowoczesnych „udogodnień” będzie musiał się jakoś odnaleźć w nowych realiach, unikając „zjedzenia” zarówno przez dinozaury, jak i niezbyt przyjaznych kanibali.
Obsadzenie w głównej roli sieroty, niemogącej znaleźć kochającej go rodziny, może dawać mylne przeświadczenie, że dominującą stroną komiksu będzie „dramat”. La historia comienza de forma bastante normal. Franck es un niño de unos diez o doce años que vive en un orfanato al que ha sido devuelto ya varias veces. Durante una entrevista con la cuarta familia que va a adoptarlo averigua que sus padres podrían estar vivos y decide escaparse para buscarlos. Cuando llega al lugar donde lo encontraron de bebé, en medio de ninguna parte, se cae al agua y emerge en la prehistoria.
Me hizo mucha gracia cómo intenta sobrevivir. Al pobre chico parece que no va a salirle nada bien y su mayor preocupación es que no puede usar el GPS del móvil para volver al río de la cueva por la que viajó en el tiempo. Además, como no sabe nadar, encontrar el río tampoco le serviría de mucho. Supongo que el misterio de quiénes son sus padres acabará estando relacionado con la prehistoria y con la posibilidad de viajar en el tiempo. Este primer tomo no da muchas pistas, sino que es más bien una introducción al argumento general en la que, realmente, no sucede casi nada. Eso sí, me costó no reírme con los intentos de Franck de comunicarse con los hombres prehistóricos y de enseñarles a usar vocales, ya que ellos sólo usan consonantes. Suena un poco absurdo si uno lo piensa un poco, pero una historia de viajes en el tiempo tampoco es realista.
Aunque no sucede mucho en este tomo, pienso seguir leyendo la serie tanto para ver cómo se desarrolla el misterio de quiénes son los padres de Franck como para ver en cuántos líos se acaba metiendo.

I am soooo excited to know that this is just the first in the series! This was BRILLIANT! Any book that can get me to continually laugh out loud gets my definite approval and this Graphic Novel did just that! I had wondered why the title was 'Frnk'. I thought it had been a spelling error or something, I wasn't sure. But, once I found out why, it made sense and was SO funny! The artwork is really good too. The only issue I have is that the text is so small and even on my tablet it's only just readable without having to adjust each page to make sections bigger. Plus my eye sight (touch wood) is very good so people with not so great eye sight might also struggle. In other words, this isn't made for use on phones. But it's totally and completely worth reading! It's written for middle grade but if your like me, still a kid at age 32, you will also enjoy this if the description sounds appealing to you. I'm not saying that everybody will love it as much as me, but that it's not just for kids to enjoy. I need to find out when the second book is due out...

The first artistry we get is a delicious reproduction of cave paintings that look like the ones in Chauvet, France. Things go downhill from there.
A sullen young teen is not looking forward to his fourth adoption, figuring this family will be just as bad as the previous three. He tries to escape, but only makes things worse; in a large shot with a building filling the background, there’s a red arrow to show us where he’s falling. (Thanks for that.)
The kid goes through a glass roof, falls off a wall like Humpty, and goes head over heels down a rocky hill, but other than a band-aid is perfectly fine. Huh. After a lot of ows, they add one more “And ow!” Cute.
I love the redhead administrator for much more than the color of her hair; too bad she’s only appears at the beginning. But then they placate me with more redheads later.
It was never meant to be realistic, obviously—not with time traveling—but some of the small moments, like him running on water, are too ridiculous and didn’t need to be. He takes too long thinking it’s a theme park, then instantly jumps to the most absurd possibility. (The fact that he’s right is just a coincidence.) More than anything else, this kid is just too annoying to root for.

'FRNK: The Beginning Begins' by Olivier Bocquet with art by Brice Cossu is a book that would be fun for young readers, but there is one 4 letter word that, while it is hilarious in the context of the book, may offend some parents.
Frank is an orphan who can't stay in any foster home. When his latest "parents" show up, Frank decides to run away. With the help of a friendly gardener, he is given a lead to where his real parents might actually be. He finds himself transported to a weird prehistoric world where everyone wants to eat him or use him for bait. Frank can't understand them because they don't use vowels in their speech (they haven't been invented yet).
It races right along and Frank's clumsiness keeps getting him in and out of trouble. It's all perfectly fine, but parents might have problems with that 4 letter word for excrement. If you can see your way past that, it's a pretty fun adventure.

A quick bit of whimsy this, with an unfosterable boy escaping his institution before his new surrogate parents recover from first meeting him, only to enter a prehistoric world of some dreamy quality that seems to have a clue to where he came from, and who his birth parents might have been. That's all forgotten, however, in order to have slapstick action scenes, and different tribes of cavemen, ll f whm tlk wtht vwls - sorry, all of whom talk without vowels. Yes, if you haven't watched Only Connect then you'll like as not suffer. Pleasant artwork, but the story isn't all there, and you have to wonder why this publisher has rushed to get this book in translation (it's still ongoing, with the third volume a month away as I write for the native French audience) when so many better books must have been available. Still, this is reasonable for a bit of juvenile lightheartedness.

Lekka, przyjemna i ciekawie rozpoczęta historia o trzynastoletnim wychowanku sierocińca.
Jest to opowieść o chłopcu, postanawiającym uciec z domu dziecka w celu znalezienia swoich biologicznych rodziców. Przez przypadek trafia do czasów prehistorycznych. Od tego momentu rozpoczyna się walka o przetrwanie w świecie, w którym nie ma internetu, jak i samogłosek.
Główny bohater będzie musiał przeżyć w epoce, w której ludzie nie wynaleźli jeszcze ognia ani mydła. Zostanie zmuszony do zmierzenia się z krwiożerczymi bestiami oraz nieokrzesanymi troglodytami.
Frnck. To dopiero początek „to wspaniały początek interesującej serii obrazkowej. Mam nadzieję, że następna część będzie trochę grubsza. Czuję ogromny niedosyt po przeczytaniu. Młodsi czytelnicy na pewno szybko pokochają Frncka.

Шаблонна казочка про підлітка, який втік із притулку шукати батьків і ненароком опинився у доісторичних часах, де давні люди полюють заради виживання на мегафауну, а також ворогують між собою. Яскравий малюнок і безідейність, бо це вам не “Доктор Стоун”, тут все простіше і з простим прямолінійним гумором. В першій частині відбувається знайомство головного героя зі світом та з дикунами. Виникає конфлікт з місцевими канібалами. Фіналізується гепіендом.
Чому така дивна назва у серії? Бо прадавні дикуни не вміють вимовляти голосні. Оригінально, пфф. Маю надію (та не дуже), що це якось використають у продовженні.

Full of adventure, engaging and funny.
Most of the time, he is either running from danger, falling down, or getting into trouble.
Seems aimed at a younger reader who is attracted to women. (At times a bit sexist with some toilet humor).
Love the illustrations! I think this was a fun introduction to a new graphic novel series, and except for it seems suited for tweens.

He cogido este libro porque me ha parecido bastante interesante.
El libro es sobre aventura, concretamente de viajar en el tiempo. Es de un niño aproximadamente de 12 años que está en un orfanato. Sorprendentemente, una pareja acogió al niño, pero él no quiso y se escapó, cayó en un pozo y apareció en la prehistoria...
A mí personalmente me ha parecido muy interesante, me hubiera gustado que pusieran un poco más de texto, pero bastante bien y es entretenido.

Gekocht voor de dochters. Het dynamische, eigentijdse tekenwerk maakte me benieuwd en heb het toch ook eens gelezen.
Vooral de eerste pagina's (in het weeshuis) vind ik zeer goed. Wanneer het avontuur echt in gang schiet en het verhaal een zotte rollercoaster wordt, dan doet het me niks meer.
Ik vermoed wel dat kinderen rond de 8 tot 12 jaar hiervan zullen snoepen.
Vooral de eerste pagina's (in het weeshuis) vind ik zeer goed. Wanneer het avontuur echt in gang schiet en het verhaal een zotte rollercoaster wordt, dan doet het me niks meer.

Cette BD m'avait été recommandée et je ne regrette pas une seconde de l'avoir lue !! C'était vraiment une chouette lecture, je ne m'attendais pas à ce début et j'en ai été agréablement surprise! Quant à la suite, le coup de voyelles je trouve ça super original et on s'y fait vite mine de rien ! L'idée de base du voyage dans le temps est très sympathique et maintenant, j'ai hâte de lire la suite !

Szórakoztató kaland képregény, a rajzok nagyon jól illenek a stílushoz, a színek pedig leugranak a papírrol. Viszont elég sok minden hiányzott belőle, hogy igazán érdekes legyen. Lehet, hogy a következő számok elindulnak valamilyen irányba, de egyelőre nem igazán aggódom Franck miatt, hogy ott ragad e a kőkorszakban magánhangzók nélkül.

Nette Geschichte, durch die fehlenen Vokale der Steinzeitmenschen sind die Dialoge stellenweise recht schwer zu lesen. Fragwürdig fand ich jedoch die Entscheidung, dass es gerade der hellhäutige, blonde Franck ist, der eine Mentorrolle für etwas dunkelhäutigeren Steinzeitmenschen einnimmt. Das ist keine Geschichte, die unbedingt einen White Saviour benötigt hätte...

Une BD assez sympa à lire ! Ça va très rapidement quand même, il y a beaucoup d'éléments dans ce premier tome et pas assez d'explications, mais l'univers est cool, les dessins sont jolis, ça donne quand même envie d'en découvrir plus.

Es hat sehr viel Spaß gemacht, das Buch zu lesen. Meine Lieblingsstelle war, als Frnck feststellen musste, dass noch keine Vokale erfunden wurden.. urkomisch.
Wie es mit ihm weitergeht und ob er jemals den Gärtner wiedersieht, würde ich gerne erfahren.

J'ai beaucoup aimé ce premier tome. L'histoire est bien faite, je ne m'attendais pas à cette approche et en plus elle aussi un côté humoristique. J'avais hésité de le lire et là je trouve que Frnk est super !
