L'Histoire de Tol

Rate this book

Gosh, what an extraordinary story; I think the best m/m BDSM-themed story I've ever read. This is a sequel of a kind (or perhaps more a counterpoint) to The Story of Tim (same author), although it easily works as a stand-alone. My only regret is that there isn't a 6-star rating.

The story headed in a completely different direction from what it seemed to be after the first chapter: it seemed it was going to be just another slave fuck-fest, which suprised me as I expected a lot more from the author after reading the first book. However, my faith was rewarded, as it quickly proved to be, instead, a story about justice, love, redemption, trust, forgiveness, and learning to accept our worst selves. It is, however, a hard-core BDSM-themed story; I think the only activities not engaged in were bestiality and scat play.

The author is a skilfull writer, and it's a delight to read with the pacing, dialogue, charaterisation, and a complete absence of typos or inappropriate word use. The author acknowledges they have zero real-world experience of BDSM: this is a fantasy used to explore themes the revolve around the nature of being human, and the things we do to each other and ourselves..

I can see now why the author needed to introduce the BDSM society in The Story of Tim: it annoyed me at the time, but without that set-up this whole premise would not work.

If you like BDSM-themed stories the add to your must-read shelf immediately.

An interesting story, with a bit more thought behind it than similar works. Don't be put off by the fact this is Nifty story about a 14 year old boy, Tim, and a 30-something Dom, David. This is nothing like the sissboy series etc, and instead the 14-year old is written like a 25-year old; he's articulate, intelligent, thoughtful, self-aware, and incredibly mature.

The premise is that Tim was abused as a seven-year old and it has affected his life. Tim feels a lack of self-worth, and has not had supportive adults around him to help him deal with what happened (in fact he has never told anyone). Now 14, Tim seeks to use BDSM to reclaim the acts that were done to him as a helpless child, so that they are associated with love and care, instead of pain and helplessness.

The story is written from the point of view of the Dom, who wrestles a great deal with his conscience, and asks for a lot of advice (including the boy's primary caregiver) about taking on a 14-year old. In the end he only does so because he believes Tim will seek D/s somewhere else if he doesn't, and this is likely to be with someone less experienced, less careful, and less caring. David also is aware of the minefield he faces dealing with the fallout from Tim's sexual abuse; Tim's ability to discuss this articulately is another reason the story is pure fantasy, but also why it is interesting above the PWP level.

The story is written like a reminisence of how this couple started their journey together, as if from many years in the future, and continually reinforces how much David loves Tim, how good they are together, and how it's a permanant relationship.

The author states outright that they have no real world experience with BDSM, and the story is a fantasy. This rings true for me with most of the pain play aspects, which are glamourised and seem altogether delicious. However the most flawed part is the writing of a heirarchy of high-placed, politically powerful Dom/mes who check to make sure Tim and David's relationship is not itself abusive. This sense of an organised, secret D/s world falls flat, in contrast to the engagement between Tim and David, which, while still clearly fantasy, explores some interesting ideas about the nature of power-exchange relationships. Tim is clearly smarter and more mature than David, and is defintitely the one in control of the relationship. Tim choses to hand power over to David in order to gain something he's looking for. Tim is shown using both his safeword and slow-word, and David is shown as planning scenes carefully in order to achieve what Tim needs, rather than for what will get his own rocks off.

A reader looking for quick hot sex will be disappointed; it takes quite a whole to get there, and there's only about four scenes of penetrative sex, one whipping, one spanking, an ear piercing, some forced chastity.

In a way, it's a shame the author chose to make Tim 14. I'm assuming, for a Nifty reader, the whole underage thing is the main selling-point (so to speak)of the story. However if Tim was assumed to be 18-25 absolutely nothing about the way the character is written would change (except for having a discussion of changing universities instead schools), and it would make more internal sense, in that Tim could also address his inability to forge an intimate relationship with another man with the spectre of his abuse hanging over him. Removing the underage aspect would open the story up to a wider range of readers. It definitely doesn't come across as fare for the typical Nifty reader: the writing is good, with actual punctuation, line breaks, and deeper thought than is usually encountered in Nifty fiction.

So overall, a good free read for those who enjoy their fantasy m/m BDSM on the more thoughtful side.

1.5* rounded down.

First let me state that Simsala truly nailed it in her review to be read here:

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Then, I don't know why I never reviewed this, but after a quick glance over the first few chapters and at the end, I realised I've read this already in 2013 and hadn't been much taken with it then. Nor am I now.

This is a tortureporn fic masquerading as "dark BDSM" which is really rather mechanical. Mind, nothing against setting up an AU or situation in which you can endlessly torture someone, possibly even feeling justified about it, and wallow in the sadism of it. I've read my share of such stories, and quite a few of them are excellent, either as masturbation devices, or - when really well-written - even offering insights into suffering and those causing it.

Alas, no such quality here. In the end it was just a long list of torture scenes without much emotional depth or any occasion to delve into the characters and live vicariously through them. As a sadist myself little of what was depicted was turning me on either, most seemed to come straight from visual porn and was rather leather-centric.

I've got more out of a casually broken wrist in The Administration and the scenes surrounding it, than this whole fic, I'm sad to say. And if one goes for something like this, The Humiliator is really the better vehicle as well.

The Story of Tol is a very dark, riveting story of BDSM (sadism in particular), revenge and redemption. It has elements of fantasy mixed with a stark, realistic language, that leaves the reader with the chills. There were BDSM societies, an internal judicial system with severe methods of punishment, etc.

The beginning of the story dragged me under so quickly, I could not put it down. And I wanted to. I was scared.fly was as if I were a child again - watching Friday the Thirteenth, covering my my eyes to block out the horror, but being unable to resist peeking through the gaps. I was worried I picked up a book of torture PWP.

Fortunately, with the encouragement of friends, I made it past the horror. Well, the initial bits, at least, and into the meat of the story. And while my own horror at the MCs actions subsided, the book became no less engrossing, and only slightly easier to read.

Still, the story had grabbed me, and it wasn't letting me go. And to the authors great credit, I began to care for a (once) reprehensible person. And I was fully immerse in his story.

Until the last third of the story, this was a solid five-star read. The ending got a bit fantastical for me, but this is still a solid story. I highly recommend it (but only I you have a strong stomach)

A free-online BDSM fantasy.
Vicious, sadistic, cruel but
so heavy on pathos, pomp and misplaced BDSM-glory that I couldn`t help but
roll my eyes - it simply was too much.
The total lack of subtleness and sheer amount of senseless over-the-top torture masked as catharsis made The Story Of Tol an unimpressive, almost boring read.

Hahahahaha, wow, what the fuck?

Boy, is this way out of my comfort zone but I was...kinda fine with that. I love BDSM stories that try to constantly push boundaries so props to the author for that.

What I did have a problem with was the juvenile style of writing. There was no finesse to it. The whole thing also felt like a lot of smut and no substance. My personal preference insists on some sort of tangible emotional connection in slave-themed fics like these so I was left only half-satisfied towards the end.

EDIT: People have told me that I probably should have read the The Story of Tim first which apparently built the whole setting for this fantasy world(I was a little confused with how the hierarchy worked)

Yeah, I probably should have but I don't think I'm going to delve back into that world again.

What to rate this? There were times it bordered on silly, times it made me think and other times it seemed to be drawn out. I'm not even what to say about it. I liked it in the end. Maybe 3.5 rounded up.

Mesmerizing and enthralling if you have any interest in the psychology behind BDSM you must read this. It is not the smoothest story, the dialogue can be stilted at times, it is unapologetically violent and harsh - but the journey is so worth it. Redemption, justice, and honesty through great personal trial bring Tol into the light from the darkness.

I think this one would speak to many on a deeper spiritual like level. The idea that you exercise your demons not by drowning them (in substance abuse, detachment, or willful ignorance) but by confronting them head on. You accept nothing less than the truth - and it will set you free. More importantly the concept that knowledge and honesty bring power - real, true power - the kind that is capable of nearly any feat.

I loved everything about this story - the carefully crafted characters, the plot that had a purpose, the society and world they inhabit, and the bits of wisdom it imparts. The fact it is MM is likely going to keep some readers away and that is a crying shame - no less than tragic. There is much to be gleaned here about many things - including yourself.

Favorite Quote: "You'll manage as a Master does. You'll get your support from your slave. When he is weak, you hold him up. And when you are weak, you lean on him. That's how it works."

Where oh where is Jack Rowan?

Do I need to plug a few warnings?
Children are harmed, people continually being beaten bloody, there are rapes and murder. Ok?

EPIC love story. Some paranormal stuff just woven in so beautifully it's hardly detected, until suddenly you realize and it simply "is". Some will find the spiritual "woo-woo" off putting. I loved it! I found The Story of Tim and The Story of Tol to be remarkably well written, rich in detail and depth.

Mandala #7 Deep Undertakings "The only way out is through"

Mandala #9 Lurid Desires "Acknowledge your appetites"

Mandala #11 Fierce Endurance "We endure together"

Mandala #23 Just Revenge "Payment is made"

That was really well done. Aside from the story being crazy/interesting/wow, jaw-dropping occasionally... I'm so glad I read it. Tol's narrative was incredible and to see everything he went through from his point-of-view was, well I'm kind of at a loss for words.

I can see why it's a classic and I can't wait to get Tim's story.

This is divided into 9 parts, and when I finished part 8, I stopped reading for several hours. Why? Because I didn't want to finish reading the last part and have this perfect ride be over. So I spent over 4 hours FEELING this unfinished story sitting at the back of my brain and being a complete masochist about Not Finishing it!

For me, the main theme was the ethical/spiritual development and self discovery of the main character. I think the BDSM and paranormal(?) elements were brilliant aids to get the reader into the right mental space to absorb whatever revelations Tol experienced.
I feel like I've been exposed to subliminal messages, slightly wierded out, but in a good way.

In other words, this is not a "romance" story in the normal sense of the genre, and to read it with that expectation will only lead to disappointment.

Regardless, the storytelling is amazing. Gripping, but also balanced, and extremely tightly structured. I could feel that structure like a steel frame just below the surface the entire time I read this.
The Story of Tol has been an amazing experience. Thank You Mr Rowan!

This story is not only an excellent BDSM novel, this is also a philosophical and ethical book. For someone like me, who am SM from conception (probably because it's in my genes), this story is a real delight. As the author puts it somewhere in the middle of the novel, this story is one of "ruthless compassion".
This is definitely not for the faint of heart though. There is almost not a page without someone being tortured (usually Tol). But we're seduced by his desire to redeem his offense at any cost and by his unfailing love for Aron.
I am surprised that the book is not for sale on Amazon. I'd be the first to give it five stars and I am sure the author would sell a lot of this story.

This story make such a big impact on me. Wow!!!
Surprise you can find some jewel on Nifty.

This story is not for everyone. Deal with a 14 years old teenager that is a masochist, his 28 years old uncle (not blood related) that is a sadist and how you deal with the need to be hurt and to hurt someone.

Note: The fact that the teen is 14 years is talk about a lot in the story.

'You could have had me, but you threw me away.'

It all starts with a terrible crime. 24-year old Tol tries to suppress his sadistic urges almost all his life. Only when he meets 16-year old Aron does he lose control.
And then the beast roared, and broke through the bars. [… ]
"I felt cruel, powerful and ruthless. I was hurting him, and I wanted to hurt him more. I wanted his screams, I wanted his pain. I was no longer resisting it, I was participating, enjoying, feeding it. I felt my smile."
But Tol is found out and accepts his punishment, which is carried out by the victim's friends:
"I, Tolgrund Burnley, as an alternative to being handed to the police for prosecution in respect of my treatment of Aron Miheliewicz Chernik, hereby surrender my person to the custody of his friends as a ward of the way, and consent to any treatment of me they may choose, reserving only my life.

"Before you sign it, let me point out that it means just what it says. You consent to us doing anything at all to you. The only thing we can't do is kill you."
We then follow Tol in a downwards spiral of suffering, sexual violence and torture.

This was a gripping and well-written tale with a unique story line. At times, Tol’s acceptance of his punishments put me off. It helped that the topic of consent was a recurring theme of the book:
"It all comes down to consent. In our world, most things do."

Like others, I found this difficult to rate. It's a BDSM consensual slave story with a 14-year-old main character. He doesn't really act much like a 14-year-old but it is an important point. Because this story, like others by Jack Rowan, seems to be more about making a point than writing sex. And one point is that chronological age or age of consent does not really make a relationship right or wrong. Although this story was told from the perspective of David, this was Tim's story and Tim was the super-perfect character that the reader is meant to aspire to be. Even if he is 14 and a submissive, he is the one in control throughout this story. Tim was smarter and more self-assured. Tim did have a history of being a victim of abuse that David helped him deal with through the BDSM, perhaps in a somewhat atypical way, but that didn't make him less of a heroic character. Tim appears again in The Story of Tol and continues to be a powerful slave. While this story really made me think, it wasn't very sexual... there was essentially nothing in the first two chapters, and I don't know if you'd call it exactly romantic... it was more understanding the two characters and how they fit together than really "falling in love."

This one was all weird for me. I've read the sequel months ago and really liked it, but this was neither here nor there. The underage issue and the age difference don't bother me, so it's not that. More the flow of the story and the grown up way Tim was presented in. Sex scenes seemed too much with not enough time in between and the side characters were made somewhat sloppy. Really, the sequel was so much better. As for recommending, I can't really recommend this to anyone and be at peace. I can't emphasize enough how much an acquired taste this story is and how many limits it might cross with some people. So read other reviews before reading it, read the warning before the first chapter and don't get into something you can't handle.

That said, I do like this author and would like to read more. BDSM world works for him despite not living it and the talent hidden in his mind is more than obvious.

Sequel/Side-story of 'Story of Tim'

This one was extremely hard for me to read for me as a victim of rape.
No this story does contain rape in different form, the point of view is the one of the sadist, sadist that here is not a gentle man but someone that deal badly with his need and want a slave like in the old time, when sane-safe-consensual didn't exist.
But, Tol is going to be stop and the same group than in the first story is going to help him understand the wrong of his view and help him find the good person inside of him.

Better than the first one!

Warning: This story contain a lot of torture scene, not here without a purpose but can be difficult to read about.

Yes, it's contain a love story but this aspect is secondary to the story. Here the main point is the redemption of a human.

I admit I was a bit wary when I saw this was on Nifty. But while it was at times a bit intense (for me at least, and not necessarily always the same kind of intense), there was nothing dirty about the relationship that develops in this story. I really loved both MCs, and quite a few of side characters too. As for the writing, while it certainly was not at the level of published work, there was nothing distracting about it either, and it allowed me to flow with the story well enough.
It would probably be fair to warn reads that in stead of a big, central and complex plot, this centers on the debuts of a young submissive in the world of bdsm, and the unfolding of the intense relationship with his loving master... with a few detours.
All in all, a very enjoyable read.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4 stars. M/M. Another dark, erotic fanfiction story I found on Goodreads. This was really well written, very few errors at all. A big caution for those considering reading this, one of the MC's is a 14-year old boy. I've read the story and I accept that this 14-year old (a survivor of abuse when he was 7 years old) was capable of giving consent, but I know that others would disagree and they should probably skip this one.

Bonne lecture.

Soooooo... I don't know what to do with this not-so-little nugget.

It started out very promising and I was totes into it. Then it started devolving, for me at least.

I think where I should have known it wasn't going to work for me, was

THE WATERWORKS IN THIS BOOK L. A. W. D.!!!! *and NOT the kink kind*. EVERYBODY AND THEIR MOTHER FUCKING WEEPS not once, every few paces there was someone "weeping" . If I NEVER SEE THAT WORD AGAIN IT'LL BE TOO SOON!!!

I could have forgiven all the grammatical errors, all the words missing, and sometimes the author would forget who was doing the action and switch them up, AND there were paragraphs where I just simply could not understand what he was trying to convey, but I got the gist of it and so I ploughed on extrapolating where I could, and glazing over that which I couldn't; but when you put everything together, it just didn't work for me. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I think maybe the problem is where the story went, instead of where it could have gone. I was invested in where it could have gone, which is why I didn't DNF it; I kept hoping we'd turn a corner and get back on track which would have made up for everything else, but alas.

This, did not, work for me.

I will say though, the character I liked the most was Aron,

auditory masturbation, he's trying to get me off by whispering❤️

It wasn't all bad and for that, 2.5 stars rounded up to 3.

Wow... rather traumatic but a must-do experience. Not the sexiest story I have read, but it was very... profound. Through part 1, I thought it was going to be a typical story of a rapist, control-freak, sadist... not exactly the typical Nifty story (a young man being enslaved against his will without really being told what's going on), but a somewhat common type. Things started getting even darker in subsequent parts and I thought of quitting.

Then I got past that part, past the senseless brutality and it all started to come together in a very interesting way. I'm not sure if I really believe in the mechanism that makes Tol work... believe in his change... but the story gave a really good exploration of consent, love, violence, pain and how they all interact. The supernatural mandalas were a little weird and unnecessary to the story, but the judgements (even if they could be argued either way), the ideas of right and wrong, and the way consent transformed relationships was very powerful and very well illustrated. One of the three best explorations of BDSM that I have read, along with Fettered and Power Play: Resistance, which took less traditional views on consent, and I am shocked that the author says he isn't involved in BDSM at all.

The sequel to this story (The Story of Tol) had a much greater emotional impact on me. But I would still recommend this one, too. For one, it's a much tamer introduction to the alternate universe (it's contemporary England, but has a powerful BDSM society among other things) than Tol's story (which is full of non-con and horrific abuse). The writing is good and the dynamic between the MCs unusual: although the sub has a history of abuse, for once it's not the Dom who thinks it a good idea to heal his sub through BDSM. And there's an psychiatrist involved. Yay!

Jack Rowan has apparently dropped off the radar, but there are two more stories of his on Nifty: Island Summer and Jamie and Sam.

A very nice, if a bit short, story about how Tim overcomes abuse and learns to love in a sub-dom relationship.

I felt this story had a bit more realism in it, than many other bdsm stories I've read. The way that David plays his dom role, for one, seems to cut a lot closer to what a loving, caring dom is like in real life and less that of a fantasy creation.

I love Tim's character, he is flirty, teasing and yet the perfect sub. He isn't the negative sub either, which you read too many of, but rather the one that will do anything for his master and wants, no needs, that submission role. Although, at the same time, I felt that Tim's age was more like 25 rather than 14... he just seemed a lot older.

All in all, it was a lovely story portraying Tim and David's life and coming together. Definitely worth another read.

I liked this story. I gave it 4 stars because I gave 5 stars to "The Story of Tol" by the same author and this last story was definitely better. So I could not really give the same number of stars to this one.
This is interesting to see a Dom/sub relationship were the sub is more intelligent than the Dom. Usually, the authors insist on the opposite. The Dom here does not want a sub who is just a carpet to put his feet on nor a couple of holes to put his c...ck inside. So, this is a good story, but I strongly suggest to read it before "The Story of Tol". Keep this last one for the desert. This is a real good desert! :)

This is a story of one man's redemption - and while I can't say I enjoyed it exactly, I can say that it kept me glued to the pages. Whether the psychology of the BDSM in this novel is accurate or not, I have no idea, but in many ways it becomes irrelevant, as the author 'sold it' successfully to me.

Definitely not a story for everyone, and one I probably won't re-read unlike some other dark novels I have read. There is graphic violence, rape, torture and cruel confinement in this story so be prepared, but to be honest, I found the mental and emotional aspects most intriguing - not something I would enjoy or indulge in, but fascinating just the same.

This is a weird one. The ages of the characters (34 and 14!) were actually less of an issue than I thought they would be for me - in fact,I just read one with an 18-year-old which felt a lot more squicky in terms of people being taken advantage of.

I guess what weirds me most about it is it can't decide whether it wants to be wish-fulfillment porn, or a story about issues. So it mingles both, sometimes a bit queasily.
