বহু-বহুকাল আগে আয়ওয়া শহরে গেছিলেন সুনীল। সেখানে দেখা মার্গারিটের সঙ্গে। অপূর্ব সুন্দর, সুগন্ধী ফুলের মতো মিষ্টি মেয়ে, যে কবিতার জগতেই সর্বক্ষণ বাস করে।

About the author

Sunil Gangopadhyay (Bengali: সুনীল গঙ্গোপাধ্যায়) was a famous Indian poet and novelist. Born in Faridpur, Bangladesh, Gangopadhyay obtained his Master's degree in Bengali from the University of Calcutta, In 1953 he started a Bengali poetry magazine Krittibas. Later he wrote for many different publications.

Ganguly created the Bengali fictional character Kakababu and wrote a series of novels on this character which became significant in Indian children's literature. He received Sahitya Academy award in 1985 for his novel Those Days (সেই সময়). Gangopadhyay used the pen names Nil Lohit, Sanatan Pathak, and Nil Upadhyay.

Works:
Author of well over 200 books, Sunil was a prolific writer who has excelled in different genres but declares poetry to be his "first love". His Nikhilesh and Neera series of poems (some of which have been translated as For You, Neera and Murmur in the Woods) have been extremely popular.

As in poetry, Sunil was known for his unique style in prose. His first novel was Atmaprakash (আত্মপ্রকাশ) and it was also the first writing from a new comer in literature published in the prestigious magazine- Desh (1965).The novel had inspiration from ' On the road' by Jack Kerouac. His historical fiction Sei Somoy (translated into English by Aruna Chakravorty as Those Days) received the Indian Sahitya Academy award in 1985. Shei Somoy continues to be a best seller more than two decade after its first publication. The same is true for Prothom Alo (প্রথম আলো, also translated recently by Aruna Chakravorty as First Light), another best selling historical fiction and Purbo-Paschim (পূর্ব-পশ্চিম, translated as East-West) a raw depiction of the partition and its aftermath seen through the eyes of three generations of Bengalis in West Bengal, Bangladesh and elsewhere. He is also the winner of the Bankim Puraskar (1982), and the Ananda Puraskar (twice, in 1972 and 1989).

Sunil wrote in many other genres including travelogues, children's fiction, short stories, features, and essays. Though he wrote all types of children's fiction, one character created by him that stands out above the rest, was Kakababu, the crippled adventurer, accompanied by his Teenager nephew Santu, and his friend Jojo. Since 1974, Sunil Gangopadhyay wrote over 35 novels of this wildly popular series.

Death:
Sunil Gangopadhyay died at 2:05 AM on 23 October 2012 at his South Kolkata residence, following a heart attack. He was suffering from prostate cancer for some time and went to Mumbai for treatment. Gangopadhyay's body was cremated on 25 October at Keoratola crematorium, Kolkata.

He was honored with Ananda Award (1972, 1979) and Sahitya Academy Award (1984).

আহা! মার্গারিট

মার্গারিট মেয়েটার সাথে পরিচয় হয়েছিল ছবির দেশে,কবিতার দেশে। সুনীল আর মার্গারিটের ছায়াসঙ্গী হয়ে সাক্ষী হয়েছি তাদের প্রতিটি পদক্ষেপের। ঘুরে বেড়িয়েছি আমেরিকা থেকে প্যারিস। পাগলের মতো পাঠ করেছি ফরাসি কবিতা। অজান্তেই ভালোবেসে ফেলেছি মার্গারিটকে। তারপর ছন্দপতন। মার্গারিটের সাথে সুনীল এবং আমার যোগাযোগ বন্ধ। দীর্ঘ ১৭ বছর পর,আরও একবার চিরচেনা আয়ওয়া শহরে গেলাম। আয়ওয়া সেই শহর,যেখানে মার্গারিটের সাথে প্রথম পরিচয়।


১৭ বছর পর আবার চললো মার্গারিটের খোঁজ। তাকে খুঁজে ফিরলাম চেনা ক্যাফে,চেনা রাস্তা,চেনা সব মুখের ভীড়ে। কিন্তু মার্গারিট যেন হাওয়ায় মিলিয়ে গেছে। কেউ কিছু জানাচ্ছেনা। যারা জানে তারা মুখে কুলুপ এঁটে বসে আছে। তারপর .... তারপর একদিন জানলাম,কবিতা পাগল মার্গারিট এখন ফুল হয়ে ফুটে আছে।


সাহিত্যমান বিচারে এই বই তেমনকিছুই নয়। কিন্তু ছবির দেশে কবিতার দেশে পড়ার পর,যারা মার্গারিটকে আমার মতো ভালোবেসে ফেলেছিলেন তারা স্রেফ তার নামে,তার খোঁজে একটানে পুরো বইটা পড়ে ফেলতে পারবে।

বস্তুত এটি ছবির দেশে কবিতার দেশের একটি এক্সটেন্ডেড অধ্যায় যা ঐ বইয়ের সাথে জুড়ে না দিয়ে সুনীল মার্গারিটের প্রতি এক ধরনের ট্রিভিউট স্বরূপ আরেকটি বই ছাপিয়েছেন। মার্গারিট, এক ধরনের ফুলের নাম বায়োলজিক্যালি অথচ আমার কাছে এক বিশাল হাহাকার আর শূন্যতার নাম। " ছবির দেশে কবিতার দেশে " মার্গারিট ম্যাথিউ নামক যে সুন্দর ক্ষত রয়ে গিয়েছিল ভেবেছিলাম তার কিছু একটা হবে। কিন্তু সে ক্ষত না শুকিয়ে তা শুভ্র ফুল হয়ে দুলছে। ভাবতে ইচ্ছে করে ক্ষতটা একটা উপন্যাস থেকে সৃষ্ট, তাও মাথায় চলে আসে সত্যিই মার্গারিট নামের কোন এক মানবী, মথ যেমন প্রজাপতিতে রূপান্তরিত করে তেমনি যেন নিজের নামখানা সার্থক করার জন্য ফুল হয়ে কাঁপছে। সবই স্বান্তনা মাত্র।

এই বইয়ে সুনীল মার্গারিটের নাম নিয়ে আম্রিকায় স্ত্রীর সাথে নিজের দিনগুলোর কথাই মূলত চালিয়ে দিয়েছেন।

আহা মার্গারিট! :( কবিতায় আকন্ঠ ডুবে থাকা মিষ্টি মেয়েটাকে সুনীল হয়তো খুঁজে পেয়েছেন..। হয়তো তারা এখনো কবিতায় বুঁদ হয়ে কাটিয়ে দিতে থাকেন অসংখ্য সন্ধ্যা। হয়তো গিন্সবার্গ মাঝে মাঝে আড্ডায় বসেন। পল এসে খোঁজ নেন তাদের ডিনারের। কে জানে..। মার্গারিটকে সুনীলের মাধ্যমে চিনলেও হয়তো আমি সেই ডেইজি ফুলের বন্ধুত্বের জন্য অপেক্ষায় থাকি। হয়তো...। যেখানেই হোক, ভালো থাকুক সুনীল। ফুল হয়ে ফুটে থাকুক প্রিয় মার্গারিট :)

Truth is stranger than fiction and it's all over this memoir of its own kind. Read this in one sitting on a feverish evening, while trying to avoid editing a PDF for work. It's a travelogue and a memoir within a memoir. There was suspense, sadness and sweet recollections. Speckled with intercultural references and nostalgia, beautifully interwoven stories were told, jumping back and forth in time in a place revisited after a decade and a half. I'm not a Sunil reader by any means, but his sharp wit and cloud-light humour were contagious. He was a well-sought and seasoned writer by the point of this book's publication, which is very obvious by the effortless writing at times, some indulgent repetition of same phrases and words throughout, while he recounted to himself his own tales, like the পাণ্ডুলিপি was never proofread or edited, or perhaps deliberately left there. Didn't quite understand some of the pointless name-dropping particularly poor Elizabeth Taylor's seeming unattractive to him of all, but plus point for the mention of Tim Leary, mescaline and the whole blurb about the beatnik marijuana movement, lol. The connected web of his universe was well showed in a few words, and reminiscent of how our stories at the end of the day are all about people and connections. I always think about the lives ppl choose to live when they choose their present incarnation, since coming across the Law of One. Sunil's soul had definitely made a contract with Paul's for this life, perhaps they owed each other one or were part of the same soul complex. The effortless ways in which Sunil attracted what's in his reality, grasped the right opportunities, been at the right place at the right time, is touched upon magically in this book. It's there if you seek it. Two other great literary techniques amazed me. 1. How he said unsaid things by talking about something else: "show not tell" using a completely different scenario. He touched upon Swatee like she was never central in the stories, but clearly she was a core rock around whom his life revolved. He portrayed Marguerite's whimsical but soft ways in a similar way, through stories of their poor days when they ran out of pocket money, or through the encounter with the 3 dudes who randomly visited his flat one time. I wondered if Marguerite could be bipolar? 2. The way he shaped the whole "plot" themeing it as "in search of Marguerite" to make readers keep coming back to wonder about this overarching storyline. Even through essentially recounting tales of his travels, he held it all together using the structure of a good novel, the "crisis" made through an intense memory which also served as a foreshadowing to a tragic end. This added magical suspense while transporting you back from the reality side of recounted anecdotes. Sigh! That's good writing, like a watercolour painting with well blended strokes.

মার্গারিট কে নিয়ে লেখা সুনীলের " সুদূর ঝর্নার জলে " বইটা এটার ঠিক আগেই পড়েছিলাম। দুই বইয়ের মধ্যে অসংগতি আছে বেশ কিছু।

ভালো লাগে নি পড়ে। দায়সারা গোছের, খাপছাড়া লেখা লেগেছে। মার্গারিটের প্রতি সুবিচার করা হয় নি।

ফরাসী বান্ধবী মার্গা‌রিটকে নিয়ে সুনীলের স্মৃতিচারণার এটি তৃতীয় ও শেষ পর্ব। প্রথমটি 'সুদূর ঝর্ণার জলে', এখনো অবশ্য আমার পড়া হয়নি, পরে পড়ে দেখতে হবে। আমি শুরু করেছিলাম দ্বিতীয়টি, অর্থাৎ 'ছবির দেশে, কবিতার দেশে' দিয়ে। তৃতীয় এই পর্বটি বেশ সংক্ষিপ্ত, পড়তে সবমিলিয়ে ঘন্টাদুয়েক লেগেছে সম্ভবত।

মার্গা‌রিটের সঙ্গে সুনীলের প্রথম দেখা হয়েছিলো আইওয়াতে, ষাটের দশকে। এর সতেরো বছর পর সুনীল আবার আইওয়াতে যান, তবে এবার স্ত্রী স্বাতীকে নিয়ে। এবারের এই ভ্রমণ এবং মার্গা‌রিটের খণ্ড খণ্ড স্মৃতিচারণ নিয়েই এ-বইটি।

লেখাটা আমার কাছে খুব ভালো লাগেনি, অন্তত 'ছবির দেশে, কবিতার দেশে'-র পাশে দাঁড়াবার মতো তো নয়ই। পুনরাবৃত্তি খুব বেশি চোখে পড়ে। 'ছবির দেশে, কবিতার দেশে'-র অনেক তথ্য বা ঘটনাই এতে আবার সংক্ষেপে বর্ণনা করা হয়েছে, এমনকি বইয়ের ভেতরেও একই কথা ঘুরেফিরে বলার প্রবণতা চোখে পড়ে। কোনোকিছু নিয়ে বিস্তারিত লিখবার কিছুটা অনীহাও বোধহয় লক্ষ করা যায়, সবকিছুকে কেমন যেনো দ্রুতলয়ে ছুঁয়ে ছুঁয়ে যাবার প্রবণতা। এটা কি রচনাকালে সুনীলের বয়সের পার্থক্যের জন্য? তারুণ্যে লেখার স্পৃহা কিংবা ভাবাবেগ বেশি ছিলো? হতেই পারে, তবে স্পষ্ট করে বলা যায় না।

সুনীল গঙ্গোপাধ্যায়ের মার্গারিটের প্রতি শেষ অর্ঘ্��� হিসেবে লেখা বই "মার্গারিট ফুল হয়ে ফুটে আছে"।
মার্গারিটকে নিয়ে অনেক কথা আমি বিগত বই পড়ার পর লিখে ফেলেছি,
তবে লেখকের স্ত্রী, স্বাতী, আমার মনে প্রবল ইচ্ছে জানার, লেখকের তার অসমাপ্ত ভালোবাসার জোড়ে তিনতিনটি বই লিখে ফেললেন, একটি বইয়ে বিশেষ উল্লেখও আছে মার্গারিটের কথা, পূর্ণ ভালোবাসার জন্য তার কাছে কি লেখার কিছুই ছিলো না?

"শুধু প্রেমের উপর নির্ভর করে কি সারাজীবন কাটানো যায়? বিয়ে ও সংসারধর্মে প্রবেশ করলে নিশ্চিত প্রেম টিকিয়ে রাখার জন্য আরও অনেকটা খুঁটি লাগে। সেই খুঁটিগুলোর নাম স্নেহ, মমতা, কৌতুক ও নির্ভরশীলতা।"

"মার্গারিট এখন নদীর ধারে ফুল হয়ে ফুটে আছে। যতবার ঔই সেতুর পাশ দিয়ে যাই, সেই ফুলের দিকে তাকাই। কিন্তু কাছে গিয়ে হাত দিয়ে ছুঁই না! "

"আমরা অনেকেই বেঁচে আছি, শুধু মার্গারিট নেই।অথচ তার হারিয়ে যাওয়া উচিত ছিলো না।"

সুনীল আর মার্গারিটের ছন্দপতনের। ঠিক ১৭ বছর পর সুনীল আবার সেই চিরচেনা আয়ওয়া শহরে পা রাখলেন। স্মৃতির খাতা যেনো উন্মোচন করা হলো ফের। চেনা সব মুখের কাছে জিজ্ঞাসবাদ করা থেকে চেনা ক্যাফে, রাস্তার মোড়ে মোড়ে যেন তারই খোঁজা করা। কিন্তু কোথায় মার্গারিট? কেউ যেনো চিনে না মার্গারিট কে!
আয়ওয়া নদীর দু'পাশে অনেক ফুল ফুটে থাকে। সেই সব ফুলের মাঝেই মার্গারিট ফুল হয়ে ফুটে আছে।

আহা মার্গারিট! কেন এই ছন্দ পতন?খুব জানতে ইচ্ছে কেউ কি এমন হয়েছিলো?

মার্গারেট কে নিয়ে লেখা বই অথচ মার্গারেট কে খুঁজে পেলাম না। কি করে পাব, মার্গারেট তো হারিয়ে গেছে, নাকি 'ও' হারিয়ে ফেলেছে! মার্গারেট জড়িয়ে আছে সবজায়গায়, সব মানে সবটায়......

সুনীলের ভক্তদের জন্য ভালো বই। বিভিন্ন বইয়ে ছড়িয়ে থাকা টুকটাক মার্গারিট নিয়ে এই বই। মার্গারিটকে আমি প্রথম জানি অর্ধেক জীবন বইয়ে। অন্তত দশ বছর আগে। প্রেম, ভালোবাসা ব্যাপারগুলো সুনীলের লেখাজোখা থেকে শিকেছে যারা, তাদের এই বই ভালো লাগবে। আর বইয়ের কলেবর ছোট। কাহিনী জানতে রিভিউ পড়ে সময় নষ্ট না করে চট করে পড়ে ফেলা যায়।
মার্গারিতা আসলেই ফুল হয়ে ফুটে আছে।
