Creo que es imposible ponerle alguna nota a este diario en particular, porque es un texto no literario. Es un texto fundacional que dio los primeros pasos para que la literatura de América comenzase a crecer como tal, por lo que su importancia es legítima y relevante.

Tuve que leer este texto para uno de mis ramos de literatura y por supuesto, no es entretenido ni fácil de leer, porque esa no era su función, pero sí uno comprende mucho más sobre la historia de América, sobre cómo y porqué sucedieron ciertos sucesos y el después tras la llegada de los españoles, lo que hace que tenga un profuso valor histórico.

A todo aquel que le interese la historia o que le apasione el conocimiento por los sucesos de antaño, le recomendaría leer esta obra, porque hace que varias piezas de la historia encajen y tengan sentido.

Γυρίζοντας απο το πρώτο ταξίδι του στην Αμερική, ο Κολόμβος παρέδωσε το ημερολόγιό του στην βασίλισσα Ισαβέλα. Εκείνη το κράτησε και φρόντισε να αντιγραφεί, παραδίδοντας το αντίγραφο πίσω στον Κολόμβο. Το αυθεντικό ημερολόγιο δεν ξαναεμφανιστηκε μετά το θάνατο της βασίλισσας και αργότερα, μετά το θάνατο του Κολόμβου, χάθηκε και το αντίγραφο. Αυτό που έχει μείνει ως τις μέρες μας είναι ένα αντίγραφο του αντιγράφου, ό,τι κι αν σημαίνει αυτό.
Το ημερολόγιο καλύπτει την περίοδο απο την αρχή του ταξιδιού στις 3 Αυγούστου 1492 μέχρι τις 15 Μαρτιου 1493 οπότε και γύρισε στην Ισπανία.
Περιγράφει τις δυσκολίες του ταξιδιού, τα προβλήματα που είχε με το πλήρωμα όταν άρχισαν να δυσανασχετούν και να φοβούνται επειδή αργούσαν να βρουν στεριά.
Πιάνοντας επιτέλους στεριά στις Μπαχάμες και μετά στην Κούβα και την Ισπανιόλα, αρχίζει να περιγράφει την ομορφιά του τόπου. Κάθε δάσος, κάθε ποταμι, είναι το πιο όμορφο που έχει δει ποτέ. Κάθε λιμάνι χωράει 1000 πλοία, όλα τα πλοία της Ισπανίας, όλα τα πλοία του κόσμου, όλα τα πλοία του σύμπαντος και λίγα ακόμα.
Όταν συναντάει ιθαγενείς περιγράφει τους ανθρώπους που αργότερα θα υποδουλώσει, θα βασανίσει και θα αφανίσει ως πολύ καλούς, ευγενικούς, όμορφους και σκέφτεται πόσο καλοί σκλάβοι θα γίνουν. Πόσο ευκολα μπορεί και μια μικρή δύναμη Ισπανών να τους επιβληθεί αφού εκείνοι είναι ειρηνικός λαός που δεν ξέρει τα όπλα.
Ψάχνει σαν τρελός για χρυσάφι, σε κάθε χωριό ρωτάει συνέχεια που θα βρει χρυσό και όλοι του απαντάνε οτι παρακάτω θα βρει πολύ χρυσό. Ανταλλάσσει χαντρούλες και κουδουνάκια με όσο χρυσό βρίσκει στα χωριά των ιθαγενών. Αιχμαλωτίζει ιθαγενείς, άντρες, γυναίκες και παιδιά για να του πάρει μαζί του στην Ισπανία. Συνεχίζει να αναφέρει συνέχεια πόσο καλοί άνθρωποι είναι.
Τέλος, μετά απο ένα δυσκολο ταξίδι, καταφέρνει να γυρίσει πίσω καμαρωτός για να δρεψει τις δάφνες του.
Ενδιαφέρον και εκνευριστικό ανάγνωσμα.

Columbus own factual log of what happened on the voyage he discovered America. Some of the book unfortunately was lost, but the holes are covered with contemporary sources description of what was written about in the lost parts.

Een bijzonder boek! Het is een samenvatting door de priester Bartolomé de las Casas van het scheepsjournaal van Columbus, voorzien van voetnoten door Wilfried Uitterhoeve. De reis van Columbus lees je dus eigenlijk vanuit drie perspectieven tegelijk.

De las Casas is bekend vanwege zijn streven om de positie te verbeteren van inheemse volkeren onder Spaans bestuur. Het is dus niet onlogisch dat eerdere reviewers van dit boek het beschouwen als te rooskleurig. De samenvatting van de las Casas zet Columbus bewust neer als een goede Spanjaard ten opzichte van latere Spaanse conquistadores. Dat maakte de conflicten in het scheepsjournaal alleen maar interessanter voor mij tijdens het lezen.

Eveneens interessant is het beeld wat Columbus had van de aarde. Hij denkt de gehele reis dat Indië is bereikt en dat het einddoel is om het Mongoolse rijk te bereiken zoals Columbus kende vanuit de geschriften van Marco Polo. De Khans bestonden toen al feitelijk niet meer, maar het beeld van het rijk van de Khan bepaalde wel de acties van Columbus.

Soms missen er misschien wel wat voetnoten die meer uitleg geven over waarom Columbus deed wat hij deed. Het verduidelijken van dieren en planten is boeiend om te lezen, maar als lezer ben je toch ook wel nieuwsgierig naar verschillende stammen, gebruiken etc. vanuit inheems perspectief. Korte opmerkingen hierover hadden het verhaal nog wat completer kunnen maken.

Een aanrader voor wie inzicht wil verkrijgen in de reis van Columbus. Ook in deze samenvatting komen boeiende details voorbij zoals de toevallige ontmoeting tussen Columbus en ontdekkingsreiziger Bartolomeu Dias die vlotjes lezen.

I've been wanting to read Christopher Columbus' journal ever since I read some disturbing excerpts from it. When I picked this up from the library, I discovered that I had somehow requested an edited version meant to give middle schoolers a taste of reading primary sources. I once taught 9th grade history and loved using primary sources in the classroom, so decided to check this out. I was appalled. No context is given, no explanations are provided, and no thought-provoking questions are asked. Not finding some of the passages I remembered reading elsewhere, I was able to locate the full text of the journal online to see what was missing. Edited out was a passage on how easy it would be to conquer the natives Indians. The book does mention captives being taken to bring back to Spain, but does not say that two captives managed to escape even though it records the story that one native asked to join the captives because he was related to them. These edits have bolstered the rosy view of Columbus that school children have long been taught, but it's not acceptable to perpetuate this view in our diverse society. And how is reading this teaching kids to use primary sources?

Fue una lectura para un trabajo de la universidad y no veía la hora de acabarlo, si por cada vez que en el libro dicen "oro" yo me tomara un shot, terminaría con un coma etílico, es verdad que tiene datos interesantes los cuales desconocía pero el libro es muy repetitivo y escrito de una forma densa que es difícil en varias ocasiones entender, muchas palabras antiguas y que hay que tener en cuenta parar la lectura para buscar sus significados.
En si, el libro habla de como llegaron a tierras de la "India" y más que llegar a catolizar, buscaban oro.

Mi parte favorita son las notas a pie de página de Bartolomé de las Casas en plan: "bueno, aquí Colón se flipó demasiado"

Cuando pone que ve sirenas y sigue tan tranquilo es bien gracioso

Cuando dice que no entiende el idioma y acto seguido se inventa todo lo que dicen es bien gracioso también

This book was recommended reading for my 5th grade son's history course. We enjoyed reading it together. Includes 44 sepia illustrations, which makes for quick reading as some pages are mostly pictures. Illustrations help explain Columbus's log. Interesting that he kept 2 logs, 1 real for himself, 1 fake for the sailors so they wouldn't know how far they had really travelled and want to go back to Spain. We were surprised how many birds were described. We would stop and look up these different birds to understand what Columbus had seen.

I loved this book because it has so many details and does not leave very much out. It goes from August 1942 all the way to May 1943. He talks about all of the Indians that he met and what they did for him but also with the challenges that they faced like a ship taken over by pirates and a crew sailing away then coming back but lost in a storm. I also liked the part when the Indians helped him when they ran aground to save everything aboard the ship.

I only wanted to give this four stars, but "it was amazing" is really exactly how I feel about this book.

I have to admit a lot of it is just my own ignorance. I had no idea that Columbus's journal of the first voyage survived; I knew very little of what happened on the journey. It is actually a pretty good yarn.

How often does anyone think to make a 500-year-old primary source available to kids?

Maybe the best part is that almost every page raises questions that are left unanswered. Just to pick the most obvious examples: Columbus seized men, women, and children from among the natives. He left thirty-nine men, the crew of an entire ship, behind in the new world. What becomes of these people? Columbus mentions more than once that the "Indians" are friendly, peaceful, and unarmed, and that a small force could subjugate them all. What will happen next? Back to the library for more books, to find out...

No sé muy bien qué opinar sobre este libro, creo que su contextualización es mucho más interesante que el diario en sí; el cómo la visión que nos presenta Colón en estas páginas contradice totalmente con su visión real, teniendo en mente una meta diferente a la que plasma en estas cartas y viéndose obligado a seguir adelante con su mentira para contentar tanto a sus compañeros como a los reyes.

A pesar de que me interesó la manera en la que Colón veía a los indios, primero con regocijo, luego con desprecio, sin ser para él más que un elemento más de la naturaleza, de a ratos se me hizo bastante denso, al punto de que tuve que cortar la lectura a medias para después pasar al audiolibro.

Quizás mi mayor error con esta lectura fue hacerla después de la Segunda carta de relación de Hernán Cortés, la cual me pareció mucho más dinámica. En contraposición, la monotonía con la que se expresa Colón llega a ser bastante abrumadora.

Un poco difícil de leer por ser un español antiguo y porque no se trata de una obra literaria, ni una narración de un viaje, sino de un diario de a bordo. A veces un poco pesado, cuando solo cuenta el rumbo, las millas recorridas, lo que veía en la mar, tanto a la ida como a la vuelta. Pero el contacto con los nativos es muy interesante y divertidos los comentarios.

It was fascinating to actually read the first hand account of Columbus. Modern histories about Columbus give a mostly negative impression of him and simplified depictions of the people he meets in the "new world". This shows a very different perspective that feels more genuine. Which I suppose it is!

It was an interesting read since it gave us the thoughts directly from the man himself. An interesting way to study the events of his first voyage. I read this book to my second grader as part of her studies of Christopher Columbus.
