CIRCUMVENT is full of suspense with so many twists and turns as everyone is freaking out trying to find Nikki. She went to France for the magazine she works for. As soon as she arrives she is injured and has amnesia. Nikki disappears. It is such an interesting story line on current affairs and very realistic, so much so that I had chills while reading. CIRCUMVENT kept me hooked to the very end as I was cheering for Ruggiero to find Nikki and regain their happily ever after.

The dialogue between Nikki and Ruggiero had me cracking up and crying, sometimes at the same time. Obviously, Nikki means everything to Ruggiero and he won’t stop looking for her without a fight. CIRCUMVENT is filled with family, hope, secrets, drama, and learning to let go. The characters are not perfect and each has their flaws which made them all relatable to me. The story really hits home with the reader in these covid times we are living in.

CIRCUMVENT by S K Derban is a story that is going to grab you right from the very first page and never let you go. I’ve never read this author before but I’m excited to find her older books now as I truly loved her writing. Learning about Nikki and France was very enjoyable. S K Derban sure knows how to keep the reader engaged, trying to figure out why Nikki is in the situation that she is. I think the aspect I enjoyed the most was reading the descriptions of the streets of France. S K’s writing and descriptions, had me feeling as if I were right there in France with these characters dealing with their life struggles.

I was so impressed with this amazing ride. This suspense was unlike anything I had read in awhile. It is refreshing to have a suspense with an already married couple and to have a international journey to find the love of your life. Ruggiero is not your typical hero and Nikki is not a damsel in distress, but when circumstances outside their control separate them, they show that true love wins in the end.
I found myself agonizing over the story and if Rugi would find Nikki. To have them in the middle of a more sinister plot made it all the more tense and exciting. I have not read a book by this author before and I was drawn in and it was better than I could have expected. I was truly impressed. The suspense was perfectly paced and the romance was just right.
I received an eARC of this book and this is my honest review.

Nikki and Ruggiero Delemont are a young happily married couple.Ruggiero is a famous pastry chef. Nikki is a write for Chef de Cuisine. They live together in a beautiful beach house on the island of Maui. They love their life together. Then Nikki receives an assignment to cover in France for 3 weeks. Unfortunately, this is also a busy time for Ruggiero so he cannot travel with her.

Nikki travels alone and soon finds herself waking up in a French hospital with amnesia. She doesn't know who she is. But someone does. And that someone doesn't want Ruggiero to find her. Can he find Nikki? Can he figure out what is going on?

Circumvent by S. K. Derban is a modern day mystery set in some beautiful places. Derban writes beautifully about the areas the characters are living and staying in. As a foodie, I also enjoyed her descriptions of the delicious food and desserts within the story. It was a mystery and I wasn't sure how Ruggiero was going to find her. Nor was I sure if Nikki would regain her memory. Circumvent was a fun and interesting read to find these answers. I liked the main couple. I did not like the bad guys too well but that is how it should be, right?

I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions within this review are my own.

Circumvent is a novel unlike any other I've read; full of suspense, but also of faith and marital love. Ruggiero and Nikki live a beautiful life on Maui. He's a head chef at a fine restaurant; she's a writer for a major food magazine. When she leaves to cover a wine festival in France, Ruggiero isn't able to go because of the holiday restaurant schedules. They will miss each other, but are looking forward to their own work and seeing each other afterwards. Until Nikki doesn't arrive in France. And in fact, when Ruggiero checks, there's no record of her even being on the airplane as a passenger.

And so, Ruggiero swings into action. He contacts the local police and the hotel where Nikki was supposed to stay. There isn't much evidence he can find. But the wheels are now set in motion. What he doesn't know is that Nikki IS in France; but she doesn't remember who she is or that she even HAS a husband. Yet a solicitous doctor is very interested in her case...

S.K. Derban's Circumvent is not to be missed by those who love a good mystery and a solid love story between a husband and wife. Derban's descriptions of her settings (Maui, France, and even the business class of her airline) make you wish you could be there; and you'll fall in love with her characters...and maybe even have a little sympathy for those who are not-so-good. Be sure to pick up a copy of book:Circumvent|36584284]! You won't be able to put it down...even if, as I was, you are nervously turning the pages worrying about Nikki!

The two stars of this book for me were Ruggiero and Detective Kanaeholo. They seemed to do the most interation in the story. Plus, they were the ones to solve the mystery surrounding Ruggiero's wife, Nikki. Ruggiero shows just how far a husband's love can get him when it came to finding Nikki. As far as Detective Kanaeholo is concerned; he is no dummy. He had good instincts that did pay off.

I would classify this book as just above a cozy mystery. There is no blood or gore. So perfect for mystery fans that like a good mystery without all the gore after affects. The situation that Nikki found herself in is scary in the way that it could translate to real life. In fact, I think it has. Author, S.K. Derban pens a good story with this book. I do want to try out other books by this author.

Circumvent – [to manage to get around especially by ingenuity or stratagem] I thought matched its name beautifully. I loved S.K. Derban’s character viewpoints and their different personalities. It was easy to get a feel for the characters and how they worked through the various aspects of the case.

The case overall was interesting, and I liked how S. K. Derban walk though the case with the different perspectives of the characters. Plus, the locations used were amazing and I totally want to go there now! S. K. Derban really brought them to life and used distinct aspects of each one in the case.

Overall, I really enjoyed this story and have several more of S.K. Derban’s books on my TBR pile now.

How could his wife just disappear? All Ruggiero knows is that he sent his wife Nikki to Hawaii. Now she seems to have dropped off the face of the earth.

The reader is let into both sides of the story. While her husband may not where Nikki is or what caused her to disappear, the reader does. I think that made the book a mystery with certain suspense elements. I was not quite sure if the husband and wife would be reunited. That was really the only part that I wondered about.

Besides enjoying the main characters, I did enjoy the supporting cast. Especially the experienced sergeant and his wife. Having a book set both in Hawaii and France was fun.

Disclaimers: The first time I started this book, I stopped because there were too many personal details at the beginning. While the couple was married, I almost found out more about them than I wanted. For me, I felt like it was a swinging door - part way open then closed. Some people will not have a problem with the descriptions, but they made me a bit uncomfortable. There were also some minor swear words (less than ten for sure throughout the book) that might catch readers off guard that were expecting this to be a completely clean book.

I did read this book as a part of a book tour, but I already owned it. So was not given a complimentary copy because I did not need one. The first time I started to read the book, the beginning chapters through me off. (See above as to why.) I knew if I signed up for the promotion, I would in fact read it. I have had many positive interactions with this author online, and I knew that I wanted to support her by reading her book.

Overall I enjoyed the book. Because of the disclaimers (especially the few chapters in the beginning), I give this book a 4.3 rating. If you enjoy mysteries that are clean overall, this is a good book to read.

Circumvent
By S. K. Derban

Nikki and Ruggiero Delemont have what seems like a perfect life. They live in Hawaii, Nikki working from home, and Rugi as a pastry chef. Life is busy but relaxing. But when Nikki gets an assignment that takes her to France their world is about to get upended.

Nikki's assignment is an article, or rather a group of articles, set in France. But when Nikki doesn't get back to Rugi letting him know that she arrived safely, he's more than a little concerned. What follows is a search that brings more questions than answers.

Circumvent is a mystery that even though the reader sees both sides of there are some things that even the reader is left to wonder and speculate about.

In all honesty, I was a little leary with the first few pages as I felt in my opinion it was straddling the fence for belonging in the "clean read" classification. But from there on I had no real concerns.

The pacing of the story is just right with the various characters reacting well to their unique situations. Each character change is identified so the reader knows whose viewpoint is being presented.
Overall I would say that this was excellent reading.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectation but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Circumvent is a modern suspense story that had me intrigued from beginning to end. This is the first novel I've read by S.K. Durban but it will not be my last. She has a way of grabbing the readers attention and not letting go until the very end. I loved all the little plot twists and of course the setting (who doesn't love France!) captured my imagination, and had me dreaming of not only the sights and sounds, but also the delicious foods that are mentioned.

My heart went out to Nikki and her plight but her husband Ruggiero and Detective Kanaeholo, and their friendship, completely stole my heart, and were hands down my favorite part of the novel. I did feel like Nikki was quite naive but under the circumstances I can't say that I blame her. I admired the fact that she never let go of her faith, and the fingerprints of God are all over the story.

What really got me was how plausible this story was, which is a scary thought! Circumvent is a wonderful read, full of twists and turns, combined with faith and heart. Great weekend read!

S.K. Derban is a new-to-me author, but this will not be the last of her books that I shall read. I enjoyed Circumvent, a contemporary suspense story. As Nikki journeys alone from her home in Hawaii to a work assignment in Lyon, France, the unexpected happens. She finds herself in the hospital with no idea who she is nor why she is there. And the mystery continues to grow as her husband, Ruggiero, Chef extraordinaire, and their friend Detective Kanaeholo begin the international search for Nikki. I liked these two men and their friendship. They are strong and determined to get to the bottom of her disappearance. Derban keeps the reader's interest high with a few twists to the plot, a thread of faith in God, delectable food references ("Ruggiero's macadamia nut, cream pie masterpiece featured silken folds of Kona coffee cream layered over a bed of chocolate."--who could resist that!) and delightful setting descriptions. I would love to go to France as described by the author, the open-air markets, intimate bouchons serving delicious regional cuisine, and the traboules, covered shortcut passages from one street to another. Readers who enjoy inspirational mysteries with a sweet romance between a married couple will not want to miss Circumvent.

3.5 Stars

This book is difficult to categorize. There’s a slight mystery (but since readers are clued in early as to the “who,” it’s more a case of finding out they why that keeps you going), there’s a touch of romance, and some women’s fiction (yet a good portion of the book is told from the men’s POVs).
However, in Circumvent, S. K. Derban takes readers to some great locations (Hawaii and France, anyone?) and describes some delicious food which had my mouth watering.

For me, the true stars of this book were Ruggiero and the detective. As Ruggiero embarks on a search to find his wife, turning over every rock he can, the detective follows his instincts. I also appreciated how Durban added characters who showed that there are kindly strangers who are willing to assist others in need.

Overall, an entertaining story that took me on a short adventure and taught me a thing or two.

Nikki is a writer for a food magazine, when she is sent to interview a famous pastry chef in Hawaii. Ruggiero sweeps Nikki off her feet and the two end up in love and married, living in Hawaii. Nikki is given an assignment in Lyon France for three weeks, but Ruggiero can I join her due to his busy season at work. When Nikki arrives in Lyon, she is attacked in an alleyway and wakes up in a hospital with amnesia. The story takes off from there with Ruggiero trying to locate his wife by any means necessary. He is contact with the hotel concierge, a detective Kanaeholo, and he travels to Lyon to find his wife all while losing his mind with worry. Nikki isn’t aware that she is married, missing her husband, or even that she doesn’t live in France. How can she stay out of a danger she doesn’t see? Can Ruggiero find her in time? Will her memory come back?

So first off, I loved that I learned a few things in this book: bouchons and traboules. I now want to travel to Lyon just to find one of these hidden restaurants and shortcut passages. The author did a good job making the details and relationships seem authentic. This was a Christian book; but not in your face religious. I think those are religious, and those that aren’t, would still really enjoy this story. Also….if you like to travel and eat food! The details for both are good.

Nikki traveled to Hawaii to do a report on a famous Swiss pastry chef living there named Ruggiero Delémont. She and him end up falling in love with him and becoming Mrs. Delémont. Soon, another assignment calls her to spend three weeks in France, her home country. Ruggiero can't come with her due to work, and so he has to send her off by herself.

After safely arriving, Nikki finds herself in a dangerous situation, and wakes up in a hospital with no memory of even her name.

Ruggerio hasn't received any notice from Nikki, and he doesn't know if she even arrived safely in France. He is determined to find the love of his life, even though something, or someone, always seems to get in his way.

Having this mystery novel in double POV was possibly the best decision that this author could have made. Being able to see what was happening to Nikki, and then flashing back to what Ruggerio was going through gave the book an in-depth feel. I was able to see how confused Nikki was as she tried to remember who she was, and how frantic Ruggerio was to get back to his wife. The character development in this novel was great as Nikki has to basically re-learn her identity, and Ruggerio has to learn how to work with the technology that his wife uses all the time to try and find her.

This was also a very suspenseful mystery novel. Readers get the sense of time "running out" as Ruggerio tries to find his wife, and the trail keeps leading to nothing. I was also confused in Nikki's part, and I kept trying to match things that she saw to what Ruggerio was seeing. This made for a very engaging plot.

The world-building of this novel was very in-depth, and the scenery of France was beautiful. I felt as if I was back there, going to restaurants in the streets. The only thing that was missing for me was the street crepes, but that's beside the point. It was very accurate!

The novel was well-paced, and there wasn't a dull moment. I hate mystery novels that have dry spots constantly throughout the story, but this one definitely didn't have any. There were also no editing errors or ends that weren't all tied up. It was simply a pleasant read throughout!

My favorite character was Nikki. Even though she seemed rather gullible in her state of amnesia, she seemed legit when she did have her memory. I would definitely like to read more about her and Ruggerio. Disappointing that this is a standalone novel! However, I would definitely read more by S.K. Derban after this.

This novel is advertised as being Christian, but I would still recommend this novel even if you aren't religious. The story was great either way. If you are Christian, as I am, it definitely adds a special touch that other mystery novels don't always have. I loved how neither of them gave up their faith, even as they struggled to find each other.

I would recommend this novel to anyone who likes mystery novels, Christian romance novels, or thrillers.

I received a copy of this book and this is my voluntary review.

Nikki is off to France to do an article. Leaving behind her husband Ruggiero. Upon arriving in France, she is confronted with danger and ends up in a hospital unable to remember her past. This is where the story gets really fascinating and intriguing.

While Nikki is in the hospital, her husband who is totally smitten with her, is beside himself with worry for he hasn’t heard from her and can’t find her. So he gets Detective Kanaeholo involved. And what they uncover just knocked my socks off.

The danger is like a second skin in this book. Nikki doesn’t even realize she is in danger. The doctor helping her seems so kind and pleasant. Only his past is very dark and what he is involved in is very dangerous. She is staying with him while figuring out her life and trying to get back her memory.

At this point you feel so bad for Ruggiero. He truly loves his wife and cannot find her. Not only that, Nikki does not remember him. So here he is trying frantically to find her only she doesn’t know she is missing for someone. When he does find her, it is so heartbreaking and watching him reignite his wife’s love for him so they begin to relearn about one another. This also has me swoon because you see the romantic in Ruggiero.

The story has great descriptive writing and has you feel you are in France with them. The mystery and danger is palpable and feels like a living breathing entity. I love who everything is interwoven together and how you feel as if you are in the moment with the characters. A mystery that keeps you wondering to the end and a story that keeps you in the moment.

This book caught my attention from the beginning. I enjoyed learning things about France: the festivals, the traboules. I enjoyed Nikki. She was a bit naive and trusting, but under the circumstances it made sense. She trusted her "savior". I liked that she never forgot God, and felt Him close even during trying circumstances. Ruggiero, her hubby, was another favorite. He seemed to have a very patient personality, and didn't get too worked up over much. Probably my favorites were detective Kanaeholo and his wife, and the hotel manager Samy from France. Both of them impressed me very much with their willingness to help out someone they didn't even know, their compassion and the detective's faith.

The book was full of suspense and twists as they tried to find out what happened to Nikki after she disappeared. It was an interesting take on terrorism and very realistic in a sense. It definitely kept me hooked to the end as I cheered for Ruggiero to find Nikki and regain their happily ever after.

I appreciated the uniqueness of this plot. There were just a few things in the book that I felt might not be appropriate for a younger audience, so I would recommend this to mature readers.

Circumvent by S.K. Derban is a contemporary Christian suspense that will intrigue you and keep you guessing.
The characters are well drawn and realistic. The setting is exotic in Hawaii moving to Lyon in France. With comprehensive descriptions we can view the scenes in our mind’s eye.
We witness that even when a character can remember very little, they can still remember that they love God. This highlights the importance to really know God, so that even if all else fails, we will remember Him. We are reminded that God has our name engraved on His hands. He will never forget us. We see this symbolised in the novel as a bracelet is engraved with a name.
A name change signifies a change in circumstances.
There is the theme of trust. God can always be trusted. The evil one seeks to deceive us as he may even be disguised as goodness.
True love means leaving home to search for the one who is lost. Likewise Jesus will leave the ninety nine to search for the one.
Circumvent was an engaging read. I think it would translate well into a movie… any producers please take note.

* I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own *

This is the story of Nikki Sabine Moueix who had taken an assignment to travel to Hawaii where she met and married a Swiss pastry chef Ruggiero Delemont. Life was perfect for them both living in Hawaii but when Nikki is called out on another assignment and this to back to France, Ruggiero is unable to go with her.
But on entering France Nikki is caught in a confrontation where she winds up in a French hospital with no memory of her past. Ruggiero is beside himself and does everything he can to try and find her but it seems that Nikki made some friends and they have taken her out of the country and she doesn’t realise the danger she is in.
This was a good story with Nikki trying to remember who she is and Ruggiero trying everything to get the love of his life back home to him

I enjoyed this book. The banter between husband and wife at the beginning had me intrigued. It was very realistic. Nikki is a journalist who gets sent on different assignments for her magazine. I enjoyed the set up for the 'action' part of the story. The getting to know the characters is one of my favorite parts of the book.
The characters are good and pulled me in. I felt so bad for Ruggiero and could feel his panic. The detective was smart he may have been my favorite. I really felt bad for Nikki and was rooting for her throughout to just remember! The pace was a bit slower than I had expected but the storyline, you will want to stick with it. Overall, it was a good book.
A 3/5 for me.
Thank you to the author/publisher for the review copy of this book (via PUYB). I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.

Nikki and her husband, Ruggierio, have the perfect life in Hawaii. They are madly in love, they have their dream jobs, and they live in paradise. However, when a dream assignment takes Nikki to France by herself because Ruggierio can't go right away, Nikki quickly finds herself in danger. Waking up in a French hospital not able to remember a thing, she quickly makes friends with the doctor who found and saved her. Will Ruggierio be able to find her and help her regain her memory? Is the good doctor really a friend or foe?

Such a great suspenseful story! I completely enjoyed every minute of it! I quickly fell in love with the characters and found myself trying to figure it all out. Will Ruggierio find Nikki? Will she remember him if he does? Who is Maurizio really? I couldn't put it down until I had all the answers! It was a great story and I definitely recommend it!

One disclaimer, this book has a little more innuendo than I usually read. I just want others to be aware.

Love will always find a way

I loved this 2nd book from the author. Ms. S. K. Derban did not disappoint me in her 2nd book. Love will always find a way is the best lesson that I learned while reading this book.

This book is sweet, funny and at the same time suspense. It is hard to put it down. Ruggiero a guy who can cook, will melt your heart with his sweetness at the same time a man who is not afraid to lose everything for his wife. It is also adventurous and you will learn more about France. Paris, you are in my bucket list.

Though this is fiction, a situation can be true. Hats off to all the authorities that helped solved the crime. It's a very scary situation and author did a phenomenal job with this book.

Nikki Moueix and Ruggiero Delémont were both amazing characters that I could not help, but feel for. I spent most of the book all but begging Nikki to remember and her husband to find her. This was truly a unique story that was different form all other romance stories that I have read!

Nikki and Ruggiero are a young and happily married couple. Nikki is given an assignment in France and Ruggiero is a very busy chef and unable to go with her.\
When Nikki gets to France she ends up in a hospital with amnesia. Ruggiero is very much in love with her and will do anything to save her.
This is a book with mystery and suspense and I would recommend it to anyone.

Nikki Sabine Moueix was a good character and her interesting circumstances did pull me in. However, I found the pace of the book to be to slow and I would have liked there to be more action in the book as I felt like the slow parts were too slow. If you do not mind a slower build story that does pull you in then you will enjoy this book.

Take a bit of international intrigue, a dash of psychological thriller, and blend them into a story of romantic suspense involving a couple with a strong marriage and a good life, and you might have an inkling of the elements that make up S.K. Derban's Circumvent.

The loving relationship between Nikki and Ruggiero Delémont draws the reader in to their life in Hawaii, and adds to the tension of Ruggiero's search for her in the aftermath of an unprovoked attack in France. With no memory of her past, Nikki tentatively places her trust in the wrong person, and links to a far more dangerous man are uncovered as Ruggiero begins his search for her.

In Circumvent, S.K. Derban has crafted a story of a happily married couple whose lives are disrupted by the machinations of others, but retain their faith in God as they find their way back to each other. With engaging leads, likeable secondary characters, and a plotline that keeps the pages turning, this was a story I did not want to put down.

While Contemporary Romantic Suspense from modern authors does not typically appeal to me as much as those of the mid-20th century, Circumvent is an unexpected mix of elements and hits so many of the right notes. Recommended with a note that this is a work of Christian fiction that portrays more of the intimate marital relationship than some readers may expect.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary digital copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

Another amazing book from S.K. Derban!! All of the characters are so diverse and unique and I love getting to discover their different personalities! The way the several locations are described make it so much fun to visualize! Very creative and definitely one of my favorites :)

Nikki has the perfect life - she is married to a man who adores her and whom she loves with all of her heart. She has the job we all dream of and even better she is able to fulfill her work duties from the beaches of Hawaii! She receives a dream assignment to head back to her beloved France for several weeks but unfortunately her husband can not join her.

Despite her husband's nervousness (he loathes using technology!), Nikki plans her assignment back to France right down to a shuttle to the airport. It was this off-chance decision to take the shuttle to the airport that alters her future. She is targeted by a ring of criminals (due to her lone female flying status) to transport something that we assume is of great value and illegal into France. This is only the beginning of the nightmare that Nikki and Ruggiero must endure.

When Nikki doesn't respond to multiple calls and texts, Ruggiero pictures the worst possible situation and his suspicions are confirmed when all traces of Nikki have been wiped clean - no record of her on the flight out of the US, no passport usage and no arrival in France. She has literally been erased. I can't even begin to imagine the fear Ruggiero faced - no only was he in a different country all together, no one could explain how his wife could just "disappear" from flight records when it was clear that she went on the plane. He turns to his friend in local authorities and the pressure to find Nikki ramps up.

While Ruggiero is desperately trying to discover what happened to his wife, Nikki finds herself in a hospital with no memory of who she was or how she even got there. She turns to her physician and rescuer - the only person she does have a memory of. But not everything is quite what it seems. Our rescuer may not be the knight in shining armour we are originally led to believe he is and may have some ulterior motives up his sleeves.

This was a novel that I could not put down - I had to see what happened to Nikki (does she remember, do the criminals hurt her further) and Ruggiero (can he discover what happened to Nikki and where she is, and if he does find her - can he adjust to her loss of memory). It was an intense story full of surprise, hope and love - I loved every moment of their story!
