About the author

Natsume Sōseki (夏目 漱石), born Natsume Kinnosuke (夏目 金之助), was a Japanese novelist. He is best known for his novels Kokoro, Botchan, I Am a Cat and his unfinished work Light and Darkness. He was also a scholar of British literature and composer of haiku, kanshi, and fairy tales. From 1984 until 2004, his portrait appeared on the front of the Japanese 1000 yen note. In Japan, he is often considered the greatest writer in modern Japanese history. He has had a profound effect on almost all important Japanese writers since.

Living as I do with human beings, the more that I observe them, the more I am forced to conclude that they are selfish.

Even though i didn't read this daily, and i passed stressful times, i still finished it fast, reading a short 210 pages novel, in your main language, just makes ending a novel easier, and weirdly enough i am actually reading way more than usual lately, which is pretty weird, but i had been doing serious steps lately to reduce addiction to social media.

So The Novel, This is part one of I am a cat, By Natsume Soseki, the Japanese author of the 1900s
I have all parts borrowed from my friend Basma Omar
i actually own a copy of Kokoro as well translated, that i should find and lend to Basma because she doesn't know that i have it.

The Writer did an amazing job in Melting the different castes of the Japanese society together, I feel that in real life you won't find the humble house of the cart puller, next to the house of the teacher, next to the bigger house of the zither teacher, next to the palace of the business man!
But in doing so, in shortening the distances, and removing the barriers erected by us in reality, he made a novel where all these people can interact together, where we can see what did they think of each other, how did they live each day, even what's their dreams and aspirations and philosophies.

Even though our protagonist is a cat, his story was part of this, compared to him being the point of view of this novel, the sole witness to the lives and antiques and weirdness of this big group of people.

Women, you know i don't do content warning, but i have to say so that no one reads this because i gave it a high rating, and becomes mad at me for not warning, but yeah, while this was 1905 novel, writers for me should always know better, they should be better than the common man, and that wasn't the case here atleast when it came to women, All the women were portrayed as not capable of understanding the scholarly discussions of men, which is weird because the men in this novel weren't even smart at all, they were all pretty silly, caught up in weird rants, that were amusing and funny, not educative at all.
At the same time it was said many times, that these women didn't learn in schools, how do you expect someone you are not giving the same opportunities as you to be on your level?
Also there was that one scene, when they were making fun of the wife of the business man with the humongous nose, where the wife of the teacher was defending her, and telling them it's not decent to make fun of her because of how she looks, she didn't choose her nose, and that's actually the best thing anyone said in that novel, well other than the cat at least, the cat was just the best.

The cat MC was a delight, it was brutal making fun of everyone, acting superior to humans, i just loved it, and it surely had the right philosophy to describe, why he thinks what he thinks about us, about Catdom, about the things we spend our time doing, and all that.

The characters that make this novel, are the teacher, the art professor, and the university science graduate friend of theirs, there was a 4th guy, but he appeared rarely.
The cats, were the teacher's cat (MC), Colors a female cat owned by the zither teacher, and Black the tough cat owned by the cart puller.
The women, The Teacher's wife, the zither teacher, the cart puller's wife, The business man's wife and daughter.
which actually makes me realize another weird thing, none of the women were named!
the male characters were named, but as i read this translated to Arabic, i am not really sure if the names are accurate, because the translator, choose to translate many of the names, instead of leaving them as they are, unless that's how the novel were wrote.
The art professor was called the liar, the teacher spent most of the novel as the teacher, but then started being called Mr. Sneeze!
the science guy was called Cold Moon, so yeah you get the idea.

رواية ساخرة مسلية.
ولكن من الغريب أن تكون رواية صغيرة أقل من 200 صفحة وبهذا السعر وفي نفس الوقت مليئة بالأخطاء المطبعية واللغوية والإملائية (على سبيل المثال الفرق بين كلمة عابس وعابث وغير ذلك الكثير من الأخطاء). من الواضح أن الناشر استخسر أجرة المدقق اللغوي.

واضح أن هناك علاقة ما غير مفهومة بين اليابانيين والقطط وليس الامر مقتصراً على موراكامي فقط!

هناك روايات بصوت دجاجة وأخرى بصوت كلب وغيرها.
أما هذه الرواية فهى بصوت قط.
وليس أى قط بل هو قط مميز لأنه الأستاذ!!

ประเด็นทางสังคมอื่นในยุคเมจิที่ผู้เขียนสะท้อนออกมาในงานร่วมสมัยชิ้นนี้ยังมีอีกมาก ทั้งโครงสร้างลำดับชั้นทางสังคม ทั้งความสัมพันธ์ของคนในครอบครัว ทั้งการให้คุณค่าของคนยุคนั้น ฯลฯ สามารถรับรู้ได้ผ่านงานชิ้นนี้

ฉากหลังที่เป็น Background ของญี่ปุ่นยุคเมจิอาจไม่เด่นชัด แต่ความเป็นมนุษย์นี่มาเต็ม ผ่านเจ้าแมวเหมียวนักสังเกตการณ์ ที่ทำหน้าที่เป็นผู้เล่า ผู้วิเคราะห์ พฤติกรรมมนุษย์ออกมาเป็นฉากๆ

หลายๆ ครั้งทาสแมวมักจะสงสัยว่าแมวคิดอะไรอยู่ มาอ่านเล่มนี้อาจตกตะลึงเผลอหันไปมองแมวข้างๆ แล้วตั้งคำถามว่านี่คิดถึงขนาดนี้เลยเหรอ

ทั้งเสียดสีแดกดัน แถมแทรกด้วยความขบขันแบบยียวน
ใช้เวลาอ่านนานพอสมควร ตัวหนังสือเต็มพรึด และความหนาระดับห้าร้อยหน้าเล่นเอาจมอยู่กับ "อันตัวข้าพเจ้านี้คือแมว" อยู่เป็นสัปดาห์

เป็นเล่มทรงคุณค่าที่นักอ่านที่หลงใหลหรืออยากลิ้มลองวรรณกรรมคลาสสิกญี่ปุ่นรสชาตินุ่มๆ ไม่หนักมาก และอยากที่จะจมอยู่กับหนังสือเล่มนึงนานๆ ควรอย่างยิ่งที่จะลิ้มลอง แน่นอนล่ะว่ามันไม่ใช่งานป๊อบ แต่การออกจาก comfort zone มาลองของที่มีความเป็น originality สูง ก็เป็นความท้าทายอย่างหนึ่งของนักอ่าน

رواية على لسان قط، يحكي فيها سوسيكي عن حياته هو نفسه من خلال شخصية الأستاذ.
أحببت القصة، لكن الترجمة كانت رديئة جداً.

I am amazed by Natsume Sōseki's wit in this book, really, the word "wit" was the only thing I was thinking about reading it.
Precise, delicate and comical. All these elements fused together in a nicely-written novel made this read a pretty enjoyable one.
I liked the subtle portrayal of the intelligentsia, of the intellectual wannabe-ism and its profanities, so subtly represented by the characters of this novel and their minute and well-calculated mannerisms.
I don't think I am eager in this moment to continue reading the next two volumes, yet I will definitely remember this as a fun read which, in the future, might turn out to be pretty handy as a boredom-killer.

لما تقرأ رواية فلسفية سوداوية متقنة وأفكارها مبهرة هتخليك تشوف الدنيا بشكل مختلف، فتبدأ تفكر يا ترى حياة مؤلفها كانت عاملة إزاي عشان يكتب السواد ده كله. فتلاقي إن حياته كانت سلسلة من النحس لا أتمناها لألد أعدائي. 😅
اقتباسي المفضل من الرواية جاء على لسان القط الرمادي بطل القصة: "لا يوجد مخلوق قاسي المشاعر مثل الإنسان، فلقد رزق الله هذا القط بالأمس أربعة أطفال دفعة واحدة، ولكن في اليوم الثالث من الولادة قام الطالب الذي يعيش في ذلك المنزل بإلقاء هؤلاء الأطفال في البحيرة الموجودة خلف المنزل، ف��كى لي ذلك وهو يبكي وقال: إنه كي يكون للقطط أبناء ويعيشون حياة أسرية سعيدة يجب أن يحاربوا الإنسان حتى يقضوا عليه تمامًا".

أحببت ناتسومي سوسيكي كثيرا في روايته بوتشان، ولأجلها تحمست لرواية أنا قط

قرأت الكثير منها العام الماضي ولكنني شعرت بالضيق فترة بسبب كثرة الأخطاء الإملائية والخلط بين حروف الزاي والذال والسين والثاء بشكل لا أتخيله حتى مع واجبات أبنائي للغة العربية. تركت حينها الكتاب قليلا فضاع مني لفترة ثم وجدته قريبا بعد أن اشتريت قط وقطة لتسليتنا هنا في المنزل، فتحمست من جديد لقراءة الرواية

قط ظريف فعلا يفهم البشر ولا يفهمونه له ملاحظات ذكية وطريفة وينتقد بشدة ما لا يعجبه ... أحببت مواقفه مع القطة ألوان المدللة ... وضحكت كثيرا بسبب مواقف سيد المنزل

الغريب أن المترجم ترجم كل اسم لمعناه الحرفي فهناك السيد الفشار الذي يكذب كثيرا ويحير من يتحدث إليه والسيد عطسة صاحب المنزل والسيدين رياح الشرق والقمر البارد

هي رواية ساخرة شأنها شأن بوتشان فتجد الكاتب نتسوميه سوسيكي ينتقد مدعي الثقافة وقليلي الصبر ورجال الأعمال الأغنياء والمدرسين ومدعي الجاه ومدعي العلم ويوضح احتقار بعض الطبقات للبعض الآخر

الكتاب به الكثير من الكوميديا فعلا ولم أكن أعلم أن له أجزاء تالية ... أحب أن أقرأها طبعا لكن دون هذا الكم من الأخطاء

عجيب أن ترى العالم من وجهة نظر قط فهو يفهم ما يدور داخل منزل سيده وينتقد تصرفاته ويتمنى لو ينصحه لكنه يفضل الإلتزام بالصمت.. وهو يواجه متاعب لكونه قطا فقد يلهو به الأطفال و يمسكونه من ذيله وقد يعاقب لأنه أفسد سجادة..
ذلك القط مثقف له رأي لأنه يعيش في بيت أستاذ بينما القط الأسود جاره له شخصية حادة تشبه سيده الذي يجر العربات والقطة ألوان هي قطة رقيقة راقية تسكن في بيت معلمة قيثارة فكأن كل قط يأخذ من سمات سيد منزله

رواية غريبة جدا

تجمع الشخصيات الرئيسية الثلاثي المرح غريب واساميهم اغرب 😂 غالبا مترجمة ترجمة حرفية بس طالعة لذيذة (الفشار) (القمر البارد) ادتني انطباع عنهم وهيا احسن من الاسامي بتاعتهم المكلكعة كدة كدة .
مطلع الجزء النسائي غبي مش عارفة دة توجه الكاتب يعني ولا المجمتع اللي شايف كدة

I am reasonably certain that I did not pick up on all the nuances here, since the book is primarily concerned with poking fun at the foibles and pretensions of a time and place rather different from my own. But enough of the concepts are universal that I found it amusing on the whole, and the conceit that forms the basis of the book is charming. I'm still not entirely sure why this is considered one of the greatest stories of its era, but I'm definitely happy to plunge forward into Volume II.

ترجمة دار المحروسة سيئة، أخطاء إملائية غزيرة، طريقة تحرير السرد عديمة الاحترافية، اختيار للمفردات ضعيف، شعرت أنني أُضيع وقتي في قراءة مالا يُفهم ولا حتى يُتلذذ بلغته أو فلسفته على الأقل. وربما، -احتمال ضئيل- أنني لم أعجب بالفكرة أو القصة من الإساس، لكنني لا أجزم بذلك، لأنني لست متأكدة من فهمي للقصة، والفضل في ذلك يرجع للترجمة. سأعود لقراءتها بالنسخة الإنجليزية لاحقًا بإذن الله، وأتركها بلا تقييم إلى ذلك الحين.

I have been wanting to read this book for years, so I was pleased to be given the opportunity to read this new translation through Netgalley.

This one is the original Japanese car book; the one where it all started back in the early 20th century, about a stray car seeking refuge (of sorts), in the shabby house of a scholar. I would say it was witty rather than funny. I preferred reading about the interactions with the other cats in the neighbourhood to those of the scholar and his friends, and I'm sure I missed a lot in those scenes due to my lack of understanding of Japanese culture of the time. I would like to read the other two volumes at some point.

Alles wat ik zoek in een boek: geen plot enkel vibes, poezen en satire! Ik denk dat dit boek nog leuker moet geweest zijn wanneer je het las als tijdgenoot, rond 1904, want met mijn hedendaagse en westerse blik merk ik sowieso niet alle nuances van Natsume’s humor op. De Nederlandse vertaling die ik las is heel erg Hollands, dus ga ik voor deel I en III misschien over op het Engels! 🐱🐈🐈‍⬛

A new translation of I am a Cat in 2025 by Nick Bradley offered a refreshing spin to this beloved classics by one of Japan greatest author, Natsume Soseki. This is the Volume 1 to the 3 part book of the series, a charming book on our cat narrator as he chronicled the daily lives of human in the household with his snarky comments. As a fan of Natsume Soseki's Kokoro, his writing style was very charming to me for Kokoro was such a special novel and I have lots of good funs with the humorous Botchan

I am a Cat was a satirical narration on upper middle class world of Meiji Era Japan told through the perspective of a cat. The cat was funny, he was unabashedly cynical in critique of its master, the professor, the friends & silly colleagues he has, his families and the servants. With his noble acts, his polished demeanour, the cat putting on airs as his master is a man of education while also looking down on his master's insolence, the flippant ambition to pursue various hobbies but then abandon them for he has no talent, the ego & pride he has a teacher but barely making any effort to go out and lounging around in the house

The story explored on identity, vanity, human condition in such humorous way that I was laughing for how hilarious they are as these humans are so flawed from the Cat's POV. Getting critiqued by a cat was absurdly funny bcus they are adorable feline but can be very sassy. Through the cat dialogues and narrative, his eyes becomes the observer to these dailies life and conversations his master, Kushami has with his friends painted in long winded exposition on situations. Soseki projected his cynicism on the intellectuals and their appallingly obnoxious ways of stories as there are more talks than substance like putting on acts of reading a thick book but then fell asleep after or crafting grand lies filled stories with straight face like Meitei. The first volume tackled a lot on the emergence of Western values slowly incorporated into Japanese culture, how the cat saw human as selfish beings, with him feeling cat is a superior being than thede foolish humans that have too many contradictions in their life. The new translation was fairly easy to read and I enjoyed how the story was told but since this is an uncorrected proof, there were some spelling mistakes, grammatical errors & disjointed sentences but other than this, I think this is great for those who want a modern translation that is easier to read

«القطط لها أرجل ولكن لا يشعر أحد بوجودها، فهي تسير في كل مكان من دون أن تصدر صوتاً، وكأنها تدوس على الهواء أو تسير على السحاب أو كأنك تلقي بحجرٍ في الماء، أو كأنك تعزف على قيثارة في كهف، أو كأنك تلعق شيئاً لذيذاً يجعلك تشعر ببرودة أو دفء يؤدي إلى سعادتك».

بهذه الكلمات وصف القط (الراوي) بني جنسه، أثناء قيامه بمهمة استطلاعية تطوعية لحساب سيده مدرس اللغة الإنكليزية، ضد السيد كاني`ـدا، المليونير الياباني صاحب الفيلا القريبة؛ في رواية «أنا قط» للكاتب الياباني نتصوميه صوسيكي (1869 – 1916) التي صدرت ترجمتها العربية عن «مركز المحروسة للنشر والمعلومات» في القاهرة، بتوقيع المترجم ماهر الشربيني.

يفتتح صوسيكي، أحد رواد الرواية اليابانية، روايته بجملة حاسمة ودالة ومثيرة للفضول: «أنا قط، لكن ليس لي اسمٌ حتى الآن». ثم يمضي القط الراوي في صفحات قليلة ليصف معاناته عندما سُلِب من أمه وإخوته، وتحول إلى قط شارع، ثم كيف تسلّل إلى منزل المدرس مرات عدة وطرد منه كل مرة، إلى أن أشفق عليه المدرس وأمر الخادمة بالإبقاء عليه. تالياً، بعد أن استقر القط وأدرك أنه في أمان وأنه سيجد بشكل دائم بعض الطعام ومكان دافئ للمبيت، اطمأن، وراح يروي الأحداث بمنظور تأملي فلسفي، لا يتورع فيه القط في شكل طفولي ساذج – يليق بوعي حيوان منزلي– عن محاكمة البشر من حوله وإطلاق أحكامه ضدهم، متهماً إياهم بالأنانية والجهل والميل إلى العنجهية الكذّابة والتشبث بتقاليد بالية وغيرها من الأطروحات الفكرية للقط المنزلي إن صحّ الوصف. تتوسع حياة القط، هكذا يمضي صوسيكي في سرده، فيتعرف الى قطط باقي بيوت المربع السكني والجيران، كالقط «الأسود» في بيت الرجل الذي يجر عربة اليد، والقطة «ألوان» في منزل مدرسة الموسيقى، ويبدأ في تبادل الزيارات مع قطط الحي، وبالمثل، كقط منزلي كسول ومتحاذق، لا يكف عن نقل وقائع الجلسات الحوارية الدائرة بشكل متواصل بين رب المنزل، مدرس اللغة الإنكليزية «القابع في مكتبه في شكل متواصل كمحارة ملتصقة بحجر»، مع صديقيه، السيد الفشّار «دائم الكذب»، البروفيسور الجامعي المحب للمقالب والذي يستمتع دوماً بوضع محاوريه في حيرة تشبه الأحاجي والنكات الرديئة، والسيد «القمر البارد» الذي يعد بحثاً عن فيزياء وميكانيكا عمليات الشنق، والذي يريد أن يقترن بابنة السيد كانيدا.

لا ينقل نتصوميه صوسيكي الواقع كما هو، بل يخضعه لعدسة جمالية تخص ذائقة المؤلف، فيبدو واقع الشخصيات ناعساً، انعزالياً، مفارقاً للواقع الياباني في تلك السنوات أو متعالياً عليه وساخراً منه، ومرد ذلك إلى طبيعة الكاتب ونشأته، فقد ولِد صوسيكي في طوكيو لعائلة غنية، إلا أن تقلبات الدهر عصفت بها وبدّلت ظروفهم فصاروا فقراء، وكان صوسيكي هو الأصغر بعد خمسة أبناء ذكور، ويبدو أن الأب لم يرغب في مجيئه، ومع التحولات العاصفة، قررت الأسرة تسريبه– كقط– إلى أسرة أخرى غنية، إلا أن ربّي الأسرة الجديدة ماتا خلال أعوام معدودة، فعاد صوسيكي إلى أسرته الأصلية مصحوباً برفض من الأب، ثم حدث أن مات ثلاثة من إخوته خلال ثلاث سنوات، فأصيب بالاكتئاب وتضررت أعصابه.

كان الطفل صوسيكي راصداً جيداً ومراقباً جيداً خلال تنقّلاته المبكرة بين بيوت طوكيو، كقط منزلي لا يمتلك أي حق غير الغذاء والمأوى، وبعض التعليم والتربية. ومن هنا يمكن رصد كيفية قيام المؤلف بتوزيع سماته الشخصية على شخوص رواية «أنا قط» فهو نفسه عمل مدرساً للإنكليزية مثل سيد المنزل، وقد كره تلك المهنة كثيراً حتى هجرها، وهو نفسه عمل أستاذاً جامعياً مثل البروفيسور الفشار، وهو نفسه مصاب بأمراض عدة مختلفة أبرزها مرض في المعدة تماماً مثل رب المنزل، عدا أن أنه هو نفسه، لا يفرق كثيراً عن ذلك القط المنزلي خفيف الظل. وبسبب تلك السيرة الحياتية المضطربة، وبسبب رفض المؤلف الانخراط في الخدمة العسكرية- إذ لطالما حمل صوسيكي موقفاً منتقداً الدولة اليابانية التي كانت تحارب على جبهات عدة، بخاصة مع الصين، وهو الأمر الذي ترد إشارات عدة له في الرواية- هرب صوسيكي من طوكيو إلى مدينة شمالية بعيدة يصعب وصول القوات إليها، وبالتالي هي ملاذ آمن للإفلات من التجنيد. تجلى هذا الرفض في رواية «أنا قط»، وفي معظم أعمال صوسيكي مثل «الفتى الطائش» و «قلب الأستاذ»، فيأتي الواقع المحكي عنه بصورة مموهة عن الواقع الحقيقي، هناك ميل للسخرية، والكارتونية، وتقليل الأحداث الكبرى، لمصلحة حكايات تتفرع ببطء وتؤدة وروية وترسم صورة للمجتمع الياباني من زاوية نظر ورؤية المؤلف، ما دعا بعضهم إلى وصف هذا اللون الكتابي أو التيار بمذهب «التروي»، كما ورد في مقدمة المترجم «حيث ينظر إلى الحياة بطريقة تأملية، وهو مذهب مضاد لمذهب الواقعية».

بهذا الشكل، تسيل أحداث الرواية ببطء، وإن كان ذلك لا يتنافى مع كونها مسلية ومشوقة، فمجرد حضور فكرة أن هذه الحياة بين ضفتي الكتاب مطروحة من وجهة نظر قط، يضفي روحاً من السخرية والكاريكاتورية، تضاف إلى أسلوب القط القبيح والمتعالي والواثق في نفسه إلى درجة التقديس، تضفي تلك المفارقات المغزولة بحكايات فرعية وحوارات مستمرة وقصص مضحكة أو متأملة، شيئاً من الحيوية على السرد البطيء. فالقط المتأمل يظن نفسه قطاً استثنائياً، على رغم أن لا أحد من سكان البيت يقبل به سوى رب المنزل، مع أن القط ورب المنزل يحتقر أحدهما الآخر، وغالباً ما يقوم رب المنزل بضرب القط على رأسه ومؤخرته على سبيل الدعابة، بينما تطرده الطفلتان دائماً، وتهينه الخادمة بشكل متواصل. في المقابل وعلى رغم هذه المهانة، يقول القط الراوي عن نفسه: «أستطيع أن أذهب حيثما شئت وأسترق السمع ممن أردت وأن أخرج لساني لمن أردت وأهز ذيلي في اتجاه من أردت وأتحسس ذقني حيثما شئت، وأن أعود لمنزلي على مهل، وبالنسبة لجميع تلك الأمور فأنا الأفضل على مستوى اليابان، ومهارتي في القيام بتلك الأشياء تجعلني أشك أنني سليل القط العفريت الذي يظهر في قصص الكارتون القديمة».

وهكذا، جعل نتصوميه صوسيكي، هذا القط السارد في رواية «أنا قط» المترجمة لأكثر من عشرين لغة، يقوم بتقديم صورة تأملية للمجتمع الياباني، في مرحلة انفتاح الدولة على الحضارة الغربية ومحاولة المواءمة بين الأصالة والحداثة التي انشطر المجتمع الياباني حيالها، خلال تلك السنوات.

A good book and a good translation, but for me it was a case of unmet expectations. I knew it would be a satirical book about a cat's commentary on the Japanese society of the time, but I expected the cat to have more relevance. There were entire sections where I forgot he was there, because the focus was on the conversations.

However, the conversations themselves did shine a light on human nature, and made me reflect on how similar we all are at the core, across cultures and time. Some segments about the nature of creatives made me feel called out xD.

And the first half of the book does focus on the cat's antics and relationships quite a bit, which I enjoyed.

I also have to mention the translator's prologue. I loved reading about Natsume Sōseki's life, and it enhanced my enjoyment of the book to have some context on him. Both the translator (Nick Bradley) and Sōseki lived between cultures, and there are some very poignant quotes that I related to a lot:

Culture shock is something we all expect, and are prepared for. Reverse culture shock, on the other hand, is far more unexpected and debilitating. Returning home to a place we have created in our minds, and finding it not as we remembered, is much harder than leaving home for somewhere we expect to be different. The ultimate realisation that we can never go home, is a deeply upsetting one, and the cause of an awful melancholy from which it is hard to recover. Or maybe this is just what growing old is.

So, despite the action being a little too slow and cat-less at times, I do recommend this book and its translation!

بما أنني من محبي الحيوانات وبالأخص القطط و أيضا من محبي الثقافة الشرق آسيوية مثل اليابانية والكورية فبالتالي هذا الكتاب كان كأنه موجه لي أنا بالأخص :)
أحببت الرواية وشعرت كأنني أقرأ مسرحية من مسرحيات برودواي .. لا أدري لماذا جائني هذا الشعور لكنه ازداد في نهايتها بشدة ... الأحداث تدور في نهاية القرن الثامن عشر وبداية التاسع عشر وبالتالي يجب أن نتفهم أن العقلية التي كتبت بها مختلفة عن عقلية كتاب العصر الحديث.. ولقد كان هذا من الغريب بالنسبة لكاتب ياباني شعوري أنه شخصية مطلعة بالرغم ان الكتاب كتب في مرحلة كانت اليابان فيها منغلقة على نفسها
الكاتب روى قصته على لسان قط و قد كان تركيزه في البداية على القط وأفكاره وشعرت أنه على فهم و دراية بسلوكيات القطط وطريقتها في التفكير .. بالإضافة إلى الكوميديا اللطيفة التي ارتبطت بهذا القط و باقي أبطال الرواية ... شعرت بالملل أحيانا .. قد يكون السبب أساسا تنسيق النص .. الرواية أيضا فيها الكثير من الاسقاطات الفلسفية ويجب أن تفهم سلوكيات القطط لكي تصل إلى المغزى...
الترجمة كانت الشيء الذي نغص علي استمتاعي بقراءة هذه الرواية ... فالكتاب مليء بالأخطاء الإملائية وهذا شيء مخزي في الحقيقة لأن الكتاب كما ورد عرض على مصحح للغة العربية وكان هذا العجب العجاب فإهداء المترجم جاء يحمل أول خطأ لغوي دارج في عصرنا هذا بين الشباب الذين لا يجيدون لغتهم .. فلو قلنا أن المراجع اللغوي مل أو قصر في جزئيات من هذا الكتاب فمن الغريب أنه لم يلاحظ على الأقل الخطأ الذي في الإهداء!! .. من الأخطاء التي وردت أيضا :
مأذق بدلا من مأزق ... إخرص بدلا من إخرس.. بالربط(على رأس القط) بدلا من بالربت ... نشاذ بدلا من نشاز ... بطتبيقها بدلا من بتطبيقها ... مربة بدلا من مربى... وهذا غيث من فيض للأسف!
أيضا إصرار المترجم (أو المدقق) على استخدام كلمات عامية لمجرد أنها كلمة واحدة بدلا من استخدامه لكلمات عربية فصحى لأنها ستكون كلمتين أو ثلاثة .. والمشكلة في هذا الأمر أن الكلمة العامية ليس شرطا أن تكون مستخدمة أو معروفة في أماكن أخرى ... فكلمة فشار ... معناها شخص مريض بالكذب ويبالغ فيه ... ملفق للكذب ... لا يحضرني الآن كلمة واحدة تؤدي الغرض ولو أنني متأكده من وجودها لكنها بالتأكيد ليست فشار والتي قد يظن البعض أن المقصود بها .. الفشار الذي يؤكل خاصة مع عدم وجود تشكيل... ايضا كان هناك كلمات أخرى لكن هذه التي تحضرني لأنها تكررت كثيرا
في النهاية لأ أنكر أنني استمتعت بهذه الرواية بالرغم من الأخطاء التي ذكرتها... فهذه نقرة و تلك نقرة أخرى

في النصف الأول من الرواية يبدأ الكاتب بتعريفك علي القط الاستاذ وبطل الرواية ،ومن ثم يحكي القط عن اقرانه من القطط ،ورؤيته للبشر الاحداث من وجهة نظر القط.
في النصف الثاني من الرواية تزداد في عدم التصديق ان القط قد رأي وسمع وفهم كل هذا ،ويبدأ الحشو الكثير للغاية الذي يعكر كل شيء هناك شخصيات مرسومون جيدا ،وهناك فكرة جيدة في كون الراوي هو قط لكن لم اجد داعي مطلقا من هذا الكم من الاحاديث الطويلة وغير المجدية التي اصابتني بالسأم
كنت استمع إليها صوتيا علي storytel وسرعت القراءة عدة مرات حتي 2× ثم بدأت في تخطي الكثير من المشاهد المملة توقعت انه ربما هناك اكشن ما حدث جلل لكن لم يحدث اي شيء.
كان الغلاف يوحي بأن صاحب القط ربنا يموت شنقا مثلا ويبدأ القط في التحري عن الجريمة او هكذا تصورت لكن ما وجدته ما هو إلا ملل ،ولا يوجد اي حافز لدي لقراءة الجزء الثانى.
نجمة للنص الأول من الرواية ونجمة للفكرة

What a delight to read! Funny, sarcastic and smart. The nuances of humor in this book ranges from dry, witty, dark, stupid and sometimes, almost imperceptible if you're not paying attention. I have laughed out loud literally 18 times, I know because I mark an O next to the passage every time I do. And personally I think that's my best stat. I can't wait to start the next book! Definitely, one of the best books I've read this year, and it's only January!

3.5 Narrated by a charming and right sarcy alley cat in Meiji era Japan, this fun new translation by Nick Bradley of Soseki's 1905 classic brings the era to life in an accessible and vibrant way. At its best in the early stages when we hear more of the cat's daily life and his view of humans, it does tail off (pun intended) towards the end as we delve further into the salon conversations of his masterpiece and his artsy friends. Still, well worth a read and a fine piece of translation.
