The Culling #2

The Authority

Rate this book
When everything she’s ever known is a lie, one young woman must make a choice that could change the course of history.

Glade Io is torn between two worlds. She’s a trained killing machine—selected by the ruthless Authority to be a Datapoint, a tech-enabled agent of the state who eliminates threats to the human colonies throughout the solar system in the Culling. But her time among rogue colonists called the Ferrymen has convinced her that The Authority has far more sinister plans in store, and all the justifications they fed to her are lies. Vowing to help the rebels fight The Authority from the inside, Glade must sabotage a captured Ferryman ship that The Authority  is planning to use to attack the Ferrymen stronghold.

Though Glade is drawn to the brave leader of the Ferrymen, Kupier, she has older loyalties as well. Her friend and mentor Dahn Enceladus is charismatic and ambitious, but although Glade cares for him, she can no longer trust him. Her younger sisters are also in danger of facing Datapoint testing, and now she’s being forced into an upgrade she cannot refuse. But help is about to arrive in an unlikely form: a ghost from her distant past.

Ramona Finn writes about courageous characters who fight to live in broken, dystopian worlds. She grew up sitting cross-legged on her town's library floor - completely engrossed in science fiction books. It was always the futuristic world or the universe-on-the-brink-of-extinction plot lines that drew her in, but it was the brave characters who chose to fight back that kept her turning the pages.

Her books create deep, intricate worlds with bold characters determined to fight for their survival in their dystopian worlds - with a little help from their friends. And, of course, romance is never out of the question...

Like young-adult dystopian books? Then you're going to love Ramona Finn's "The Glitch" -- set in a futuristic world where an Artificial Intelligence rules, Lib wakes up in a barren land with one thought lodged in her mind: "Find the Glitches".

This book came to me from NetGalley. Since I am a huge fan of sci fi and dystopian books, this rang my bells. Now, on to an honest review.
Although the story is complete and excellent, I would suggest you read Book 1 first. I was able to follow along without it (I absolutely plan on reading it, but I’m so unorganized that reading books out of order is a common occurrence)
This world is set far in the future. Of course mankind has screwed everything up. The Earth became uninhabitable and humans began to settle on the moons of planets in our solar system. The distances make the worlds hard to control so...enter evil villain. Like any well written villain you can almost see where he’s coming from.
The powers that be develop a tech that controls crime by killing off the bad guys. So, a teenager is outfitted with tech that can kill someone on Jupiter’s moon with their mind from far away.
Enter The Chosen One. Her name is Glade Io (Io is one of the 67 moons belonging to Jupiter where she is from). She can pick and kill an entire solar system. Eek!
While her power grows and she becomes the special project of the super villain, she must decide who the true bad guys are and where to place her loyalties.

Publisher synopsis:

As good, if not better than the first. You get to see Glade grow and become her own person, someone she is afraid of now that she is more controllable (read it, you'll understand). It is an amazing feet of the author to write as a conscious controlled by another and the desire to listen and defy at the same time. Thrilling and enthralling!! Can't wait for the next book in the series!

I received this copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The complexities between what Glade's logical reasoning is telling her and what she feels is the truth are at war with each other, two sides of the same coin. She is in an impossible situation where it is hard to know just who to trust and one false move could be her undoing. Her ability to soldier on so calmly in the face of so much death and betrayal is admirable and even though she is a Datapoint she is unlike any other which makes her unique. It is that uniqueness that creates a spark of hope within her leading her on a journey that will have many casualties along the way. Everything is connected and finally she will have some of the answers she deserves but at what cost?

This author draws you into Glade's world making it seem all too real and I am keeping my fingers crossed that she will succeed in the war against the Authority.

Another spellbinding cliffhanger!
Gah. This second book in The Culling trilogy is expertly done. There’s a fantastic balance of mellow and action that keeps you engaged and somewhat on the edge of your seat.
I’m eternally grateful book 3 is already published, I foresee an epic thrill ride for this final installment.

When everything she’s ever known is a lie, one young woman will be forced to make a choice that could change the course of history. Glade Io is torn between two very different worlds. On the one hand, she is a trained killing machine. She is a Datapoint, a tech-enabled agent of the state who has been selected by the ruthless Authority to eliminate threats to the human colonies throughout the solar system in The Culling. But, on the other hand, the time she spent with the rogue group of colonists called the Ferrymen, opened her eyes to the atrocities on The Authority’s agenda, and she’s realizing that the justifications they’ve fed her are nothing but lies. Vowing to help The Ferrymen fight back against The Authority from the inside, Glade must figure out a way to sabotage a captured Ferrymen ship that The Authority is planning to use to attack the rebels’ stronghold. Glade is also torn between Kupier, the brave Ferrymen leader and her loyalties to her friend and mentor, fellow Datapoint, Dahm Enceladus. While Dahn is both charismatic and ambitious, and has always been Glade’s closest ally, she’s realizing that even though she cares for him, she’s no longer able to trust him. Her younger sisters are facing the possibility of Datapoint testing, and she’s been forced into a tech upgrade that she couldn’t refuse and is unable to fully control. Just when she thinks she’s in an impossible situation, Glade finds help from an unlikely ally, a ghost from her past.

This is the sequel to The Culling, and the second book in Ramona Finn’s The Culling trilogy. And it is honestly even better than its predecessor. There’s more action, more danger, more drama and suspense, and more intrigue. Glade is finding more and more that she isn’t the emotionless super soldier she has been trained to be. She’s desperate to protect her younger sisters, as well as her friends on the station, while also keeping The Authority from attacking The Ferrymen and their colony. She’s facing death as a traitor at every turn, but Glade sees no other choice but to do what she knows is right. In many trilogies, the second book just doesn’t live up to the first or even the final book, but that’s definitely not the case here. This was a real page turner of an adventure from the beginning all the way to the amazing end! And, in the midst of the action and suspense, Finn manages to incorporate a lot more character development. I really enjoyed getting to know both Glade and Dahn better, as well as the leader of the station, the ruthless Haven. I honestly can’t wait to read the next book because of the cliffhanger that The Authority ends on. I simply have to know how Glade protects everyone she cares about, while also preventing harm to the innocents across their solar system, and how she stands up to Haven. There’s just so much more I need to know!!

I’d like to thank Ramona Finn, Relay Publishing, and Netgalley for providing me with an electronic copy of this book. I understand that receiving the book in this manner does not obligate me to leave a positive review. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

WOW!! SO, SO GOOD!

This is the 2nd Ramona Finn series that I have ABSOLUTELY DEVOURED like a filet mignon steak dinner after a 7-day fast! The other is called The Glitch - and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND those, as well!
First, this is book 2 of The Culling series, and I would be remiss if I didn’t urge whoever is reading this to read book one, The Culling, first!
This story....is so incredible! The entire world she has created is UNREAL!
SETTING: Dystopian future. Our Solar System. Hundreds (thousands?) of years in the future.
CHARACTERS: Our heroine is named Glade Io. She is a Datapoint for The Authority, the ruling government over the moon colonies of our Solar System.
The antagonist is a man named Sir Jan Ernst Haven, the Authority member who oversees the Datapoint program, and is a whole new breed of wolf in sheep’s clothing!
SUMMARY:
A Datapoint is a certain type of person who, in this day and age, would be considered an anti-social personality. They don’t feel empathy or any of the complicated feelings that “innocent” or normal citizens would normally feel. Those innocents need protection from dangerous society members, so the Datapoints are trained to “cull” those citizens of the cols who have brainwaves that are considered to have violent and/or murderous tendencies. There is a culling every ten years. Or, there is supposed to be. Haven is trying to switch it up. (Yep...He’s a slithery Snake!)
My thoughts:
I feel like I know these characters! They are so MULTI-FACETED, so lovable and relatable! And there is SCIENCE and PHYSICS and some astronomy - I’m geekin’ out like CRAZY!! If you’re not into the science-y stuff, no sweat! You don’t have to be to enjoy this precious gem of a book! Seriously, you’ll FLY through this series, and enjoy all the places it takes you both physically and emotionally. Finn has a way of pulling at the raw emotions within, and evoking almost a visceral response. I’ve sobbed. But I’ve rejoiced and laughed and wanted to swear at some of the characters! Man, I’d love for this to be a movie...that’s the kind of series this is!
READ IT! LOVE IT! I DID!

This book picks up soon after book one, you should probably read book one first, you don't have to, but this book will make more sense if you do.

I couldn't help but feel for Glade, she's been put in a situation that seems impossible. Questioning everything that she's been told there's no easy way out, and that's what makes this book so good. Glade has to overcome her feelings and the people trying to control her.

There's lots going on in this book and as it progresses so many things start to make sense while others show that the weren't what they first seemed. Plenty of twists here and lots of action.

I'm really enjoying this world, it's detailed and the people seem so real, I cant wait to find out what happens in the next book.

The narration is excellent, the character voices are brilliant and at times had me forgetting that I was listening to only one person. The delivery was spot on!

I received a free copy of this book from the author and/or narrator and/or publisher and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.

The second in the culling series, this novel was well written but too predictable in the way that YA reads sometimes can be. We pickup where we left off with Glade Io aka ‘the chosen one’ meant to cull the entire solar system. What different here is that Glade is troubled by this newfound responsibility and she doesn’t know who to trust. Knowing how the story would play out, it became somewhat boring and even the action scenes didn’t hold my interest due to lack of suspense. The characters themselves do get some better development, which helped the story tremendously, but again didn’t endear me to the plot much. World building was great. i liked this story because it gave me a good sense of the scenery and the world we’ve entered, but that felt a little lackluster at certain points where i needed some detailed description. At one point we come to understand what her home planet/moon, Io lols like with its red volcanoes, but not much else. In spite of all that, i do want to see how the story ends and will be reading the next novel in the series.

I loved getting more into Glade's world. I've enjoyed following her and I'm really enjoying finding more about her.I completely agree with Dahn that she's some kind of unsolvable puzzle even with being in her mind. Glade doesn't react at all like I'd expect accept when it comes to how she feels about Kupier. I love following her story and seeing how this is all going to pan out even with all the twists thrown in. Stacey's voice just helps the story become more alive in my mind and helps make the ride much more enjoyable.

I really enjoyed this a lot. The characters seem real. While it does have the typical ‘chosen one’ she’s not also the most beautiful girl anyone has ever seen and she’s not a typical girl either.
I love all the worlds created and the tech.
Narration by Stacey Glemboski was excellent.
I will definitely look for more by this author and narrator.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review

The best so far!

Glade is my new favorite heroine. This series is so exciting! I could not put this book down during the last stretch. I had to know what happened. This author doesn't leave cliff hangers but writes such a compelling story you want to continue reading the next book.
I am off to do that now!

The second book is the aggressive leader's formation of his culling team. Being the lead he is stationed on a space station hidden in Neptune's rings. This books also describes the various human home worlds and sets up the competitions agenda. The culling limits that have been set are questioned. The unease permeates those in training for culling and the human population in general.

Glade Io !

The second of this series was even harder to put Down. Pretty sure I knocked it out in only a few days and I work 7 x 12 hr days, yes, lost some sleep! Ramona Finn weaves another captivating story and you just have to love Glade Io. Interesting twist on the final page, I won’t spill the beans you’ll have to get to the last page on your own. Enjoy!

Much better

I wasn't thrilled with the first book but decided to plug on in hopes the second installment would pick up speed. I was not disappointed. I wanted to read this book and had a hard time putting it down. The plot is fresh and new and not like most other distopian fiction. Can't wait to read the last one!

So...

You know what the best part of being an adult is? I can decide to stay up half the night to finish a book. And that's exactly what I did with this one. Now all I want to do is read the final book. Brilliant, funny, romantic and with a genuine look into how the human mind works. Mix that with sci-fi which is my favourite genre? Unbeatable.

I really enjoyed this story. The main character, Glade, can be a little frustrating at times but the relationships she forms throughout the series are real feeling. She really grows as a character and the story progresses at a good speed. The love story is what kept me going but the twists and turns in this futuristic universe were enjoyable, and even sometimes surprising.

Edge of my seat!!

Great follow-up, I'm so addicted! I tried to slow down bc I don't want it to end, but I couldn't! Read this in one day! My only complaint on this book was I felt alot of things were repeated over and over, but the story was still great!

Action packed page turner

I really enjoyed the character development. The plot was a little lean because of it though, but I feel like it's the middle of a trilogy, so this is where we get the meat... To coin a really bad analogy..lol

Better than the first!

It took no time for me to become interested in this book. This was better than ‘The Culling.’ The characters were so well developed and melded into the storyline well! On to ‘The Ferrymen.’

An easy and short read, this sci-fi story tells the tale of a young girl equipped with a weapon that could bring destruction to an entire solar system.

I really liked the creativity with how the world was built usually the sci-fi that I know off surround the idea of inhabitation of certain planets like Mars or Venus. But in this world, people do not inhabit the planet. They inhabit the moons surrounding the planets. The scenery and imagery built by the author helps

The chosen one trope is one that, I believe, takes a lot of deliberate effort to be written well because of how many times it has and continues to be done, and unfortunately, I did not feel it with Glade. Though there was some development with her character she still made the plot predictable in how things were to come to an end.

The plot was bland. I was no were near the edge of my seat because there lacked suspense. My heart was not palpitating in anger or frustration or happiness. The action scenes left me with a sour taste of bored.

Though I was able to follow along well with what was going on, I would advise reading the first book before diving in this one because there were some things that were left unclarified.

Summary: if you're looking for a short but entertaining read then this book is for you.
