This concise work is a summary of Imam Abu Isa al-Tirmidhi's Ash-Shamail al-Muhammadiyya, a widely-acclaimed work which details different aspects of the character and lifestyle of Allah's Messenger (May Allah bless him and grant him peace). Based primarily on the Moroccan scholar Sheikh Muhammad Abd Hayy al-Kattani's summary entitled Munyat al-Saa'il, this book beautifully captures the essence of each chapter of theShamail, allowing readers to draw ever closer to Allahs Messenger (May Allah bless him and grant him peace) and study his salient features, as though they are directly observing his blessed personage. In an era where Muslims are being detached from Allahs Messenger (May Allah bless him and grant him peace), the lifeline of a person's belief, it is hoped this summary will help rekindle the flame of love for him and inspire readers to emulate his blessed example. The Khulāsa is a summary of Imam Tirmidhi’s 𝘈𝘴𝘩-𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘮𝘢̄’𝘪𝘭 𝘈𝘭-𝘔𝘶𝘩𝘢𝘮𝘮𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘺𝘺𝘢𝘩 (“The Sublime Qualities of Muhammad”), a compilation of ahadith that beautifully capture 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 ﷺ.
This work is mainly based on Moroccan scholar Sheikh al-Kattani’s summary of the Shamā’il, thus it concisely showcases key features from each chapter, making for a short but moving read. It details the Prophet ﷺ’s physical appearance, hair, turban, garments, speech, gait, eating and drinking habits, worship and humility.
“He did not repay an evil with an evil, but pardoned and forgave.” [347]
The original author, Imam Tirmidhi, was a 9th century scholar and hadith collector, narrating from many esteemed hadith scholars including Imam Muslim and Abu Dawud. His teacher Imam Bukhari honoured him, stating, “𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘵 𝘐 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘯 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘪𝘴 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘮𝘦.”
If you’re looking for a humble refresher on the Prophetic lifestyle and how to beautify your character in accordance with the sunnah, this summary will not only provide you with guidance, but will also encourage you to indulge in the seerah to gain a more in-depth understanding of the Rasool ﷺ.
This work is a summarised version of Ash-Shamail al-Muhammadiyahh, the description of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), slimmed down without mentioning the chain of narrators. The format of this book consists of points in succession, some being shorter than others. So do note that you're not going to be getting yourself into a book that reads with a continuous flow. The benefit of this is that if you're a layman like me, this format can be quite helpful to subconsciously memorise these points, if listened to more than once. Added to that is the short duration - so overall, I think this audiobook should be a good investment.
I'm also very glad the narrator is a fluent Arabic-speaker. It was a lot more authentic this way and natural. Plus, the narrator ensured that the subheadings were nicely spaced out so it didn't get mixed up in my head.
He was the most beautiful of people by heart, as it was free of every vice. He was the truest of people in speech, softest in nature and noblest in company. Whoever saw him suddenly trembled due to his awe. Whoever mingled with him loved everything about him.
Words can never put into words how beautiful the Prophet(saw) was in everything to the tiniest bit of his life.
Concise but sufficient. We usually pick a book to read OK the sunnah or sirah at home during Rabbiul Awwal and we completed this book as a family. Great for kids to learn and adults to revise.
Alhamdulillah, just completed the reading of this highly beneficial summary of Shamail al Tirmidhi. The notes by the author nicely complemented the main text and inccreased our appreciation for the scholarly giants of the Islamic tradition who gathered information on the minutest details of the Prophet Muhammad's صلى الله عليه وسلم life.
It should be noted that I read a different edition of the book published by Karima al-Marwaziyya Foundation, translated by Saleh Malik.
I finished reading a translation and commentary of the entire Shama'il of Imam At-Tirmidhi this week, I am currently reading Imam Nabahani's Shama'il, and this was an amazing summary that really helped solidify many of the most important areas of the text for me. It is also on Audible as an audiobook, and the reading is very good. I plan to listen to it regularly as well as having the written text. It seems ideal to use in a Halaqa study group circle as well.
Really enjoyed the book. Easy concise summary for those wanting to know more about the prophet SAWS. Lots of precise points for those wanting to adopt any etiquette of the Nabi SAWS. Would be a great family time read for young and old.
