People ask me when they come for counseling, how to find a purpose for their life, how to make choices now that their children have left their home, what is the life purpose for a guy when their lifelong job is over. And it's pretty difficult to assist someone to deeply understand. Their identity is more than they knew. It really helps to have a book by Rick Warren to hand the "reading ones", a book that is so true, so clear, that there was a time when it flew off bookstore shelves everywhere.

How to Gain Spiritual Maturity

This book contains steps we need to follow in order to gain the character traits of the fruits of the spirit. The only problem is we don't find out until the end of the book that we can't get these traits on our own merit. They can only be acquired through the Holy Spirit. We cannot boast that we got these traits on our own and they can't be gotten through sheer will power. That is the reason the book is titled "God's Power to Change Your Life," because the character traits are only attained through God's Power .

In the chapter on goodness, Rick Warren writes that we are to guard our mind. What he doesn't mention is that it is important to be aware of what you're thinking. The Bible tells us not to worry. We need to guard our mind against worry by being aware of when we worry, then surrender that to God.

In the chapter on self-control, Rick Warren writes "With God's supernatural help, we can master out moods." Actually , this is true for all the topics in the book. With God's supernatural help we can gain all the fruits of the spirit.

This book was and is very helpful to me. As long as I remember God is in charge and only with His help can I do these things, I can do them. I was able to see where I was weak in some areas and needed growth and some areas I had already mastered. Rick Warren's analogy of being pruned is a good one. Jesus is the vine and we are the branches which are being pruned.

Awesome read!

After reading several of his books it's very encouraging to know the way I was taught is the right way, and God has been leading me without me being aware of it. I'm truly thankful that God loves, a nobody like me, so much so he's leading me in the truth. Pastor Rick is a awesome man of God, and I like how he conduct God's house blessings to you pastor! Thanks for your wisdom.

This was such a lovely, refreshing book on Christian living basics. Sometimes I feel like when you’ve been a Christian for so long the basics kinda go right by you, but this book has a great way of reminding new and old Christians that the Christian faith isn’t that difficult to understand or to live out. I especially enjoyed his takes on the fruit of the Spirit. I felt encouraged by this book, it had many great reminders!

If you are expecting the something as revolutionary as a Purpose Driven Life you will be disappointed, but if you are just looking for a good inspiring Christian book you will be pleased. The book is based on the fruits of the Spirit; love, joy, peace, gentleness... He gives a chapter for each of the fruits in which he gives steps to help incorporate each of the fruits in our life, while also clearly explaining that the fruit is a work of the Holy Spirit

While I know that he is an extremely popular Christian author, this is my first Rick Warren book. And I loved it! It was very validating to know that with God's help, I can change my own life. No more whining, but praying. I thought Warren gave a lot of very practical ways that Christians can truly grow in God. I'm already working to put some of these to work in my own life.

Breaking it Down

Warren does a really good job in breaking down what we need to do in order to change our lives spiritually. I love how his book is grounded in scripture, not opinion, and how he uses modern day examples to emphasize his points. Really good book that discusses the 9 spiritual fruits mentioned in Galatians 5: 22-23

Rick Warren has written an entire book centered on Galatians 5:22-23: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”

To each character trait, he awards one chapter, sharing his tips on how to implement this trait into your own life. I specifically appreciated the chapters on patience and self-control, which spoke to me more about overcoming my own short-comings, and accepting my limitations on my spiritual journey.

Warren’s writing is littered with truisms and aphorisms that are often misquoted, and spoken, or rather written into the book to support his arguments. At times, he comes off didactic, aiming to proselytize, but if you can withstand that, there are some good passages to strengthen your faith.

I believe that the manual for faith is everywhere, in the Buddha, in Allah, in God and the Bible. So I recommend this book to anyone who is seeking spiritual advice, or to be kinder, more patient, more peaceful.

What could make this book better? A story to tell, rather than feel-good bumper stickers. God’s power to change your life doesn’t need to be proved, but it sure helps to see how people have navigated difficult times not just in saying that they did, but showing how they did.

What did I appreciate most? That diving into a single verse in a book of verses can generate powerful insights, and that we must meditate on what it means to us to be faithful, to be good, to exhibit self-control. For this reason alone, I would pick the book up again.

For those who read, let me know what your take is on this book? Did anything move you? How has God changed your life?

In this book, Rick Warren takes the time to focus on the fruit of the spirit. I really enjoyed that. Each chapter we got to dive in to a particular fruit. Some things made me realize that I need change. Other things I already knew I needed the change but am stubborn. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the fruits, how they work in my life, and God's never ending love. This would be a great book for a new Christian or someone who just wants to learn more.

While I know that he is a very popular author, this is my first Rick Warren book, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's awesome to be reminded that with God's help, I can change my life. I don't need to wallow in self-pity, I'm empowered to make positive changes. This book gave me some intermediate targets to work on.

The hardest thing always the implementation. We already know what the purpose our life is, but to achieve it we ought to change. This change was a difficult one, and sometimes we felt powerless about it. This book address several things that could help us in change for the better.

Tykkään Warrenista. Pyhityskristillisyyttä ja jalat maassa olevaa teologiaa sopivassa suhteessa. Käytännönläheinen ja realistinen.

God’s Power to Change Your Life is a helpful resource for bettering one’s life via a spiritual context, especially if one can get past all the rhyming and, at many times, trite presentation.

The headline-like affirmations on the surface seem silly. On one hand, they may act as a sort of shorthand for getting his simple message across. Thus, having a trite and sometimes clichéd title or prompt may make it is easier to synthesize the message into action, especially as the author gives a solid spiritual grounding for each. On other hand, though, the over-simplicity sometimes discounts the actual problems addressed, giving almost a lack of substance or deep thought on each subject and never getting past the surface.

The book presents a good framework for motivating positive change in one’s life, but the purposeful reader just needs to get past the initial silliness of its presentation.

I liked the contemporary examples Warren used to illustrate his points in the book. I haven't read a spiritual book since (okay, probably never) and I think this book gives a good overview of the steps you need to take if you want to change your life (be more joyful, peaceful, worry less and so forth) with God's Power. I only wish the author would have been more specific about bible study. Several times Warren recommends 15 minutes of daily bible study, but he doesn't tell the reader where to start. Near the end of this book he recommends another book,'Rick Warren's Bible Study Methods.' It would have been nice to have some of the information from that book in this one.
