A board book retelling of the Lord's Prayer in child-friendly language that helps little ones learn to pray.
Hello Daddy! We want to know you. And be close to you. Please show us how. Even the youngest kids can experience God's Never Stopping, Never Giving Up, Unbreaking, Always and Forever Love in this board book that presents the Lord's Prayer in words a child can understand.
Do what is best-- just like you do in heaven, and please do it down here too.
I don't make it a practice to review board books, but I am a fan of all books in the The Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story Whispers His Name family. The Sally Lloyd-Jones/Jago combo is always an enriching experience for all ages. In this title, the Lord's Prayer is paraphrased for little ones. The illustrations bring the prayer to life and I can envision this one coming off the shelf again and again as children are taught how to pray.
This uses the exact same text as one will find in the author's other book, The Jesus Storybook Bible. So if you already own that book, you already own the text of this book.
However, what takes up one page in that previous book is made into an entire picture book, with pictures that do a great job supplementing the text. And by making it into a stand-alone picture book, it's better suited to younger children who typically have lesser patience for more words per page.
Just like the JSB, this book is so special to our family! It not only puts the words of the Lord’s Prayer into accessible, readable language for all ages - because who the heck knows what HALLOWED BE THY NAME or FORGIVE US OUR TRESPASSES means unless you grew up in Sunday school or otherwise churched enough to be exposed to that? - it also reframes the prayer to my own adult self, reminding my heart of the gospel in fresh and different words. I’m seeing a lot of hate for the nontraditional words, but don’t we want people to come to know God who don’t already have all the prior training? Don’t we want to translate the Bible and life and words of Christ into modern language that people in our modern communities can understand? If this makes you upset, boy are you going to be shocked when you find out the Bible wasn’t originally written in English!
Anyway, my ten month old LOVES this book and so does our family. Anything that illuminates the gospel to us afresh and invites us further up and further in is a big giant YES in our house.
It’s a great book, not just for kids, but adults, too. The wordings of the book is simple for kids to understand, but also makes it relatable because it reflects how we speak with and to each other nowadays. The illustrations are fantastic and eye catching. It’s just like the books I had when I was little and got me hooked on reading. Easy five stars ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I am not a fan. The actual words of the Lord's prayer are simple. I learned the prayer as a small child. It gave Jesus's example and recommendation of how to speak to God. It has comforted me, thrilled me and amazed me. It was sung at my wedding and at my husband's funeral. It is words for the ages and needs no dumbing down.
It surprises me that I give a 2 rating to a Sally Lloyd-Jones book, but I didn't care for the text. In Found (Psalm 23) the vernacular much more closely followed the actual Scripture, but I'm not sure if read Loved without know it was phrased from The Lord's Prayer that I would realize that. Maybe that is deficiency in me. As always, Jago's illustration are interesting to explore.
A paraphrase of the Lord's Prayer in language that little children can grasp.
I really like the way Sally Lloyd-Jones rephrased this. I think many adults would benefit from this paraphrase. It makes it very easy to understand and apply to life. The illustrations are sweet too. Highly recommended to Christian families, Sunday schools, and Christian schools.
I love Sally Lloyd-Jones’ The Jesus Storybook Bible. This book takes the Lord’s Prayer, which is included in there, and expands the illustrations to a full-length board book. The illustrations, of a group of children going on a forest adventure, are sweet, but the way she translated the Psalm is almost too simplified and not recognizable to the original Biblical text.
Cool kids book. Very colourful, cool, and prophetic
A fun read with lots of love. Awesome kids book 📖. The message is easy to read, inviting, and eye catching. Worth getting. Makes a great gift for any age. A prophetic eye opening valuable book from Heaven. Very moving. God inspired.
More or less says the same thing as the Lord's Prayer, but it's definitely not a direct translation into child-friendly language. And some points aren't very lyricial / transitions seem abrupt.
Illustrations are fine. I think they're probably best when they show some kids fighting then making up.
The illustrations are lovely, but there is simply no need to dumb down the Lord's Prayer in this way. This oversimplification takes all the poetry out of it and removes some key concepts. Children have memorized and recited the Lord's Prayer for countless generations, and this board book should have just used the real text, even if it was from a simpler translation.
Just lovely! This is the Lord's prayer retold in language children would understand and use, with Jago's wonderful, soft illustrations. Not only was the text beautiful, but Davy delighted to point out details in the pictures, like the dog running after the cat or the fish in the pond. I am now going to explore all of Lloyd-Jones other retellings for children!
4 stars for the illustrations  This book is a paraphrase of the Lord's Prayer in language that little kids can understand. It was nice to read and think differently about what the words we're used to actually mean.
I typically love this author’s works but was disappointed with this. It did no favors to either the Lord’s Prayer or the children to whom this book may be read instead of the actual Lord’s Prayer. I would’ve given it an even lower rating if it weren’t for the gorgeous illustrations.
Nice pictures but the text is a poor representation of the Model Prayer. As one other reader noted if you didn't know ahead of time that it was supposedly based on the model prayer- you would have a hard time knowing it.
This is a board book for little children with a simple rewording of the Lord's Prayer. It uses warm, inviting illustrations and short phrases to engage a child in the story. It does a good job breaking profound truths into easy-to-grasp concepts.
Couldn’t wait to get my copy in the mail! The dynamic duo have done it again! Beautiful adaptation of the Lord’s prayer that is simple enough for children, poignant enough for adults.
I really do love this book but I don't find it flows as well as Found (the board book released previous to this one) nor The Jesus Storybook Bible. But it is really lovely and I still recommend it.
What a great adaptation of the Lord's Prayer. Excellent for bedtime, wrapping up a day of adventures with a simple and beautiful prayer that has stood the test of time.
