Unexpected Places is the personal story of gospel singer Anthony Evans, son of well-known pastor Tony Evans and brother of author Priscilla Shirer. In this intimate and moving memoir, Anthony shares the details of his struggles with depression and doubt, and encourages readers with the unique story of his search for purpose and identity.
From growing up duty-bound to his name, to his time as a finalist and then talent producer on The Voice, Anthony explores the pressures he experienced as a child and as a young man in Hollywood, and describes the journey to his renewed faith in God. He exposes the vast differences between what the world teaches us to value and how God values us. Anthony examines what his parents did right in raising him but also describes how they unknowingly missed his elusive pain. Finally, he reveals how God orchestrated His plan to grow Anthony into a man who is in love with life, his heritage, and his individual calling.
Anthony has learned to embrace the incredible beauty of his unique voice. In Unexpected Places, heinvites readers on their own journey to do the same.
I’ve been a long time fan of Anthony Evans’ music, and still am, but I found this book difficult to connect with. I can relate to some of the author’s journey to be his full self, but as soon as he gets through telling about a tough experience, he retreats back into shallow Evangelical platitudes. I was hoping for a deeper reveal of who Anthony is, but didn’t find it here. And even though I grew up evangelical, I cannot relate to this overly simplistic view of God and faith. I think Anthony expresses himself best through the music he writes and sings. He is certainly gifted.
Do you know what it’s like to feel that everyone else is looking at you and comparing you to someone else? Have you ever felt that the weight of the world was on your shoulders before you even had a chance to begin to take the first step on your own spiritual journey?
If so, then you won’t want to miss Anthony Evan’s new book, Unexpected Places: Thoughts On God, Faith, And Finding Your Own Voice – the must-read memoir of the season!
Anthony knows what it’s like to grow up surrounded by the spotlight. He’s the son of illustrious preacher Tony Evans and the brother of beloved women’s Bible teacher Priscilla Shirer – both who are household names in many families!
And he knows what it's like to achieve household fame as well as a finalist on the popular singing show, The Voice.
But behind the scenes, this creative, talented, sensitive young man often struggled in ways his friends and family did not see or understand. In his moving memoir, Anthony shares the intimate details of his struggles with depression and doubt, and encourages readers with the unique story of his search for purpose and identity.
Unexpected Places is an inspiring story that reminds us that no matter who we are, God loves us, sees us, remembers us and cares for us, even when we’re grappling with insecurities and doubt.

I write this review with tear filled eyes. Anthony Evans Jr. painted a vivid picture of the pastor's child. As a Pastor's wife, I saw my three children's images throughout his book. As he pulled back the curtains of his life to reveal the real Anthony, he released my children's stories page by page. His transparency about his personality, his ADHD disorder, his spiritual journey and his failures that led him back to faith. I felt each step along the way, heard each sigh and prayed for and with him as if it were just happening. Yet, tears of joy fell when Anthony shared in the final chapter, Back to Life, "I never was supposed to be him.(referencing his dad) I was supposed to be me. Just honest, vulnerable, sometimes-silly, oversensitive, attention-deficit, messed-up Anthony Evans Jr. God's creation. Loved and forgiven." Oh if we could only guide our children until they grasp this concept. God has created them to be just who they are, not who we expect them to be. Every parent should read this book, however I challenge all Pastors and Pastor's wives to study it until we get it right. Thank you Anthony! God bless.
I am a long-time fan of Anthony Evans' music and I enjoyed reading his story. While I cannot relate to any of his specific experiences, I can relate to several of his lessons and realizations about God and life in general as well as the themes of not fitting in and having professional and personal lives that do not turn out as expected -- being taken to "unexpected places." I deducted a star because he wasn't quite as transparent as I wanted him to be. From my perspective, there were a number of unanswered questions -- for example, what were/are his career aspirations in music (and relatedly, from a career perspective, what was the purpose of participating in The Voice and how upset was he to not make it further)? Is it Andi herself that he is having trouble getting over or the fact that he blew his chance of getting married? How did he really get over his depression (must have been more to it than a single epiphany at group counseling). That said, I am glad he shared his story with us. God bless you, Anthony!
I thank Anthony Evans, Jr. for such an anointed transparent book. This book will surely minister to so many people. It was refreshing to read about a Christian who admits he didn't have all the answers. Christianity didn't keep him from falling into depression or self-doubt or being unsure about his destiny. He shared his struggles as a preacher's kid (pk), especially the son of a world-renowned pastor. It was interesting to learn about the gospel and Christian recording industry. No matter the genre, it appears that music executives are more concerned about classifying artists instead of cultivating who they are. He wrote in-depth about some differences between Gospel and Christian music and how they are marketed. Not only is this book an excellent read, but it's also empowering to know that everyone's walk with Christ is an individual journey. It doesn't matter if you're the son of a powerful minister, or the brother of awesome authors, you have to know Jesus for yourself.
I chose this book because of my January fast and it spoke to me with where I am in my life right now. This book was definitely a quick read. Anthony Evans Jr has a short attention span which he disclosed in the very beginning of the book. Therefore the chapters were short, straight to the point but very powerful. His story was a true testament that if you truly grow your relationship with God and take time to listen he will reveal so much to you in everyday normal things like brushing your teeth, sitting on a plane, going to class, etc. in everything that Anthony did, overcame, battled he took something away from it which is inspiring. As I continue on my own faith walk this is something I strive for; listening to God in everything.

Unexpected Places Is a must read!!! God used Tony Evans Jr. mightily in the writing on this book. Even when life gets hard as it sometimes does Anthony reminds us that through it all God will never leaves us nor will he forsake us this book was a blessing from the beginning to the very end.
Even in our darkest moments in life there is always light at the end of our tunnel with God all things are possible. This book was very inspiring. Thank You Anthony For being so honest and transparent this book will be a blessing to many people who are still struggling to figure out this journey called life. When we put our trust in God he will take us to unexpected places.
It takes courage and vulnerability to share your innermost struggles. Anthony shared that, and he has this wonderful ability to tell a story and draw a spiritual lesson out of it. I could relate to so many of his struggles. And he doesn't end by telling you that he has it all now, but still has desires that he remains hopeful, along with the past regrets. That's the reality of what many of us face, and I appreciate that he takes the risk to share this instead of how some would feed you with "why are you still bothered/struggling? That's because you don't trust God or look to Him enough." and make you feel condemned.
You get storytelling and uplifting moments in this book. The author does a great deal of name dropping and shares photos with celebrities. It was good to read about and connect with the journey and process of thoughts that take you from one step to the other. As a reader you get a good dose of drama and real life takeaways that help to make your own life a little better. You take what you want and leave the rest when you finish the book.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Anthony's thoughts on life. I appreciate how transparent he is about the struggles he's had and how the Lord has met him and encouraged him. As a family in ministry, I particularly appreciated his perspective on growing up as a PK and the impact it had on him. I worked at Pine Cove Christian Camp with Anthony, and it was fun to read about his experiences from those days... yet challenging, too!
Excellent, excellent, excellent! I recommend this book for all Christians. Mr. Evan was very transparent about his struggles and mistakes. This book helped me to understand what it means to walk by faith, and what it means to be true to yourself. You don't have to be perfect for God to bless you, nor do you have to be anyone else.
Thank you Anthony Evan's Jr. for sharing your story!
I've never read a book that spoke life with each word, every letter, word ,syllable were of significance. Anthony's transparency, vulnerability, authenticity and love for God is truly refreshing and inspirational. His story gives sincere validity to the need to assess ourselves, honor and embrace our humanity and strive to bring the greatest glory to God. Well done Anthony SharleneTeresa
Real, honest truth of a man seeking God's place for him. I was sucked in from the beginning. Written in a way that made me feel like I was on the journey with him, seeing how God was growing and shaping him all along the way. Thank you, Anthony Evans, for sharing your story. Your stories of how God spoke to you...well, He used those to speak to me. Thank you.
A great memoir of the popular singer-songwriter's life, family, and career. Though the author doesn't go into great detail about his deeper struggles, Evans shares his major victories and setbacks, and the lessons learned along the way. This book is humorous and anecdote-filled, and nearly anyone can enjoy it and learn something from it.
Excellent. The author capture you from start to finish with his transparency and authenticity. It doesn't get any more real than this. Great example of what it means to be naked and unashamed. Thank you Anthony for showing readers that even though we are broken, in God's hands we can be made beautiful. Well done! Kingdom Man!
Wonderful! I identified with Anthony in so many ways and was challenged in some very specific ways from the Lord through His story. Listened to it on audible, and though not read by Anthony, it wasn't a detraction. Get this book!
Anthony Evans showed us how to be transparent in the midst of out struggles. None of us are perfect but we God on our side we can continue to press forward. A good read. May God continue to bless you Anthony Evans jr
It was fun and funny. I often read and get sidetracked so the fact that he bounced around with mini stories was refreshing. I am glad he wrote a book because I know of the family but never up close and personal.
Powerful testimony of the life of a preacher's kid. The pressures , expectations, struggles, self doubt. A transparent honest look into the life of someone living faith out in the public. Recommend this book. I congratulate Anthony Evans for writing this book.
I was truly surprised by the life that Anthony Evans Jr is living. God has favored him on his Christian journey and it is truly evident in his autobiography. This was a great read and I highly recommend it to others who who want to experience God in Unexpected Places.
It is encouraging to me that other people struggle in their Christian walk.... too many times I've encountered believers who portray a trouble free life!
This was good, instead of some the dreamy droll that more than a few Christian authors hand out, this book shared real stumblings that ordinary folks with ordinary issues, including PKs and those of us that have multiple siblings. I appreciate that he could share many of the adventures and the pathways that life has bestowed upon him. Thank you Anthony.
