Delayed Justice

Rate this book
She had long given up the desire to be loved. Now she only needed to be heard.

Jaime Nichols went to law school to find the voice she never had as a child, and her determination to protect girls and women in the path of harm drives her in ways both spoken and unspoken. As Jaime, now a criminal defense attorney, prepares to press charges against someone who wronged her long ago, she must face not only her demons but also the unimaginable forces that protect the powerful man who tore her childhood apart.

Chandler Bolton, a retired veteran, is tasked with helping a young victim who must testify in court—and along with his therapy dog, Aslan, he’s up for the task. When he first meets Jaime, all brains, beauty, and brashness, he can’t help but be intrigued. As Chandler works to break through the wall Jaime has built around herself, the two of them discover that they may have more to offer one another than they ever could have guessed—and that together, they may be able to help this endangered child.

This thrilling installment of the Hidden Justice series explores the healing power of resolution and the weight of words given voice. And as Jaime pursues delayed justice of her own, she unearths eternal truths that will change the course of her life.

Whew, this one was my favorite of the series so far! Going in I got worried because of the tragedy in Jamie's past and how heavy a subject that would be (sexual abuse by someone in her childhood). First of all I was impressed of how perfectly Cara Putman got the emotions and the situation down to wring my heart, and yet stayed away from the tiny details that would have done no more than gross me out and make me take a break from the reading. Excellent balance there, that left me thinking of Jamie's situation and feeling her pain without having to get buried under sordid and sensational word pictures.

The thriller portion itself was full of twists and turns, including a case where Jamie gets to really put her heart to work to get a child protected.

Just so much to love in this one, overall!

FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and Thomas Nelson. A positive review was not required. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.

Mrs. Putman must have a deep well of courage to have written this book. It isn’t an easy topic. Sexual abuse never is simple. Not only did she broach a difficult theme, but she handled it with a delicate and considerate yet reality-bearing hand. Her approach to the abuse felt masterful. It’s tough to balance the stark reality of sexual abuse and its victims and predators with the grace of salvation. Yet, that’s precisely what this author has done.

The two-perspective approach on the abuse—from a silent victim and one who has already found her voice—was brilliant, as it showed that both types of victims must pair courage with truth to see justice done here on earth. Living out the reality this book portrays takes guts and moxie, and I hope any man, woman, or child who finds themselves a victim will seek out help in order to obtain justice and complete healing.

Another aspect of this book that pleased my heart was that the so-called “little people” of the story (the victim, the attorneys who didn’t presume to stand a chance, etc.) weren’t afraid to stand up to big-name bullies (bosses, generals, senators, etc.). This is something that is reflective of today’s society, where big-named bullies (actors, sports stars, politicians, etc.) think they own the world and can push us little people around just to get what they want, whether that be to abuse someone, win a championship, star in the next summer blockbuster, or obtain the political seat of their choosing. This book shows that those bullies don’t always win in the end.

The theme of “you’re not alone” was the perfect companion to come alongside the brashness of the abuse. I think it’s important for people who are being bullied or abused to know they aren’t alone. It’s crucial that those facing “big bullies” in work, school, or other aspects of life know they can keep reaching for truth and justice. They don’t have to let those bullies beat down their spirit, even if they beat down their body. Each victim, every person is important. Every person matters. God’s love can keep a victim’s spirit intact through the pain and help that person become an overcomer who can find true healing.

It isn’t always an easy battle, breaking free from abuse. This book reflects that well. The journey Jaime took toward faith in this story reveals that the struggle to believe that God cares in the midst of our worst pain is completely real and valid. But, y’all, He does care. Completely, wholly, supremely. Keep fighting for that belief until you find that it’s true for you too.

Something that’s very clear to me, after having read this book, is that the author has a heart for pain and healing in people. She had my eyes misting over several times, because Jaime’s pain was so raw and real and believable. Also, her friends’ caring love toward her, how they chose to stand with her and be her support system—whether she liked it or not, at times—was so exquisite that the emotions bubbled up until I was dry-sobbing (because the tears refused to fall; they were there!). I already knew Mrs. Putman could pull my emotions into the story (she’s done that many a time for me, through her previous books), but this book, this journey was next-level awesome and one I’ll definitely revisit down the road.

This book is an incredible look at how the pain of sexual abuse spiderwebs out into every portion of a person’s life, including their outlook and daily habits. I hope it will open many people’s eyes and stop abuse in its tracks.

A couple more notes:

The inclusion of a comfort service dog was spectacular and eye-opening. I loved Aslan and how he was able to be a comfort to certain people in the story.

I loved that neither of the leads used nicknames for each other. This was a refreshing change from the norm in Christian fiction right now.

Brandy alcohol was mentioned once by a bad guy. I was very happy the leading good guys did not partake in alcohol. This, too, was refreshing.

“When He seems most hidden, He is most present.”

Y’all. Jaime’s story undid me. Maybe because of the current news headlines. Maybe because of the tie-ins to The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and Aslan. But definitely because Putman has woven together a story of a woman finding her voice and using it to fight for justice for those who can’t yet speak up.

Jaime may compare Chandler to Captain America (and you won’t hear me complain about that visual) but she is a true superhero in her own right. To have risen above the heartbreaking abuse in her childhood – and the emotional isolation it created – to achieve not only great personal success but also solid friendships, a tender heart, and a fun sense of humor is inspiring to me. And then to take on the powerful man who abused her, just when he is in the public eye as never before… her courage is something to aspire to in my own life. Even though I have not experienced the abuse that Jaime suffered, we all have moments where we stand at the crossroads of ‘speak up’ and ‘stay silent’. I hope I have the courage that she showed to speak up when needed – and, conversely, to stay silent when needed.

Chandler… blissful sigh. The Captain America comparisons are not far off. This military vet is an all-around good guy with a protective heart and a faithful Golden Retriever named Aslan (which, as an aside, is totally what I want to name a golden retriever, should i ever get one). His instincts are spot-on as he gets to know Jaime and begins to see the hurt she’s carried inside for far too long. Balancing his attraction and growing feelings for her with the need to make sure she is protected – and to patiently and compassionately work through her honest faith questions with her – definitely shows off his Captain America side quite nicely...

Bottom Line: I loved the journey that Jaime and Chandler take toward God, justice, and wholeness in this latest installment in the Hidden Justice series. It’s not a light-hearted read, to be sure, but there are moments of humor at just the right times along the way. The references to The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe made my bookish heart happy – and the way Putman used this book in Jaime’s life is just perfect. Besides being a great legal thriller, this is a story of courage and hope even when God seems absent, knowing that He is in fact closer than the air we breathe and grieving with us. Putman tackles tough questions and does so with grace and authenticity. A great addition to the series!

Another exciting legal thriller from Cara Putman! Once again, one of her novels seems to have anticipated current headlines, and Jaime’s story gives us great insight into victims of abuse and the troubles they face when seeking justice. Jaime and Chandler are intriguing and well matched, and their romance is tender and realistic. With plenty of twists and turns, the story kept me flipping pages. Another winner!

Putman finished this series with the best book of all IMHO. Focusing on sexual abuse of children, Putman deals with touchy subject matter in a beautiful way leaving any details left unspoken but showing the depth of the pain left in the soul of children who are subjected to this as well as the immense guilt felt by parents who have somehow not known it was happening.

Intense from start to finish and filled with amazing characters as well as the wonderful group of women lawyers who have stood by one another through law school and life after. This novel stars Jaime as the main character. Abused by her uncle as a child, she now feels she has the strength to finally confront him through legal channels; but little does she know that as a possible next general in the Navy he will not go down without a battle. Chandler aka Captain America was definitely the perfect hero to stand behind Jaime as she deals with the battle for her job, her life, and her sanity. And the sweetest character of all was Chandler's comfort dog, Aslan, who helped Tiffany through legal testifying that no child should ever have to endure.

Filled with suspense, romance, legal intrigue, spiritual growth, and prayer, Putman concluded this series with a mesmerizing book.

Delayed Justice is a great addition to the Hidden Justice series and is Jaime's story. In the previous stories, she has been aloof and quiet. We find out that she has issues going back to when she was a child-abuse from a relative. Jaime has decided to seek justice and the path is not a smooth one. The journey is made better by the support of her parents, close friends from college that we met in the other books-Caroline, Hayden, Emilie and their mentor, Savannah along with a special new friend, Chandler Bolton, a retired vet. Chandler works with veterans that need counseling and help with issues caused by war. He has a comfort dog, Aslan, named after Aslan in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, to help give comfort and whose services are used for therapy but when Savannah needs Jaime's help with a little girl who has gone through the same thing that she did as a girl, Aslan's help is much needed. Tiffany was abused at the hands of her mom's boyfriend. Jaime and Aslan help Tiffany cope with testifying before the courts about her abuse.
Jaime's story is an emotional journey of healing, strength in great distress and threats, trust and coming to faith. It is a story with suspense, danger, and romance. I highly recommend it.

Why Sometimes Awful Books Are the Best
I’d never read anything by Cara Putman before Delayed Justice. Never fear. I’ll remedy that forthwith.

Look, there’s no way I’ll ever say this is a “good story.”  It’s not. It’s a horrible story that far too many boys and girls in the world can echo. It’s horrible and awful, and I hate that the need to write it exists.

Every bit of me wanted to throw it across the room as I read. But there was one problem.

I couldn’t stop turning the pages to pause long enough to aim.

It’s that good. It’s that awfully good.  Ms. Putman takes the horrible reality of child abuse and lays it out with no holds barred.

And yet she did—she held back exactly where she should. Not many authors know that delicate balance between dangling you over the cesspool of life so you are fully aware of its existence and the reason we’re to fight it without at least dipping a small toe into it.

Cara Putman didn’t.  Not even once.
We lived the horror with young Jamie without actually seeing or hearing anything too graphic.  We knew it was—we knew.  But with skillful writing and the brilliant use of subtext, we got a full picture without ever once having the veil of discretion raised.

Even if I didn’t like the characters, the description, the setting—the rest of the plot!  Even if I hated the rest of the book, I swear I’d have given her five stars just for that.

Look, when I realized that she was going to take us into the heart and mind of misused children, I didn’t know if I could take it. I can handle a lot, but sexual crimes are my personal line.  It’s just… I can’t.

Don’t get me wrong.  I’m throwing a caveat out here. If abuse is a trigger for you, be warned.  You may have trauma reading this book.  I expected to close it and respectfully bow out of my commitment or skim anything remotely related to Jamie’s case.

It absolutely wasn’t necessary.
Were the characters great?  Yep.  For once, you have two broken people—one not ready to trust a romantic interest.  The other just barely ready to consider it.  Both navigated the change naturally and without instant changes of heart just because of hormones.  That alone should win Putman some sort of award.  I’ll nominate her for anything just for that alone.

But her descriptions.  Wow. She writes descriptions I love to read—just enough to let me see what’s going on and no more. I wasn’t overpowered by lengthy details about every knickknack on every shelf in every room as if she’d taken writing lessons from Dickens.

Thank you, Ms. Putman!
Instead, I learned about each character by what she did share… and each character was so raw and real I felt like I’d met them before.  Characterization—spot on.

Her writing style engages the senses and emotions exactly as it should. Only once (and remember, I read an advance reader copy, so it was likely corrected) did I find a couple of paragraphs where I wanted to say, “Okay… does every sentence need to start with ‘she’?”  That’s it.  That’s the only objection I had in the whole book.

Even the “conversion prayer” didn’t bug me like so many do. This wasn’t some Sunday school paper contrived tale. It was a realistic, reasonable moment that required prayer.

Score one for reality.

Frankly, I recommend this book to anyone—with a reminder of its content.  This is a hard-hitting book about topics that shouldn’t even exist!  And it’s handled with skill, sensitivity, and authenticity. Bravo. I am so glad I requested a review copy. So glad.

Yeah. Sometimes awful books about terrible things are the best—at least when the author knows how to make sure we see the evil without being steeped in it.

This book just absolutely gutted me. If you're looking for a light, easy read, maybe put this one on the shelf for a while until you are ready for a book that speaks to real life difficult situations.
This novel seems to have literally been taken right from the headlines. These issues are at the forefront of the news just this week. It delves into the hard questions--why did she wait so long to report the abuse? How believable is she, and what proof does she have?
I had so much compassion and empathy for Jaime as she navigated difficulty from every side. Learning how to have courage when she didn't feel as if any existed. The author's use of The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe as a teaching tool is so meaningful and will touch every reader, regardless of background and experiences. We all need to know that we have a God who fights for us, who isn't tame.
The relationship between Chandler and Jaime is portrayed so gently and beautifully as well. The friendship that develops into something more feels right with this story, as difficult as the situations dealing with past abuse are to handle at times.
My only slight quibble with this book is that I felt the ending was a little abruptly tied up, but overall this is such a fantastic novel I can overlook that one small thing.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, all opinions are my own.

Cara Putman has created another amazing novel. She filled this one with her trademark twists and turns and kept this reader very hooked from start to finish! I found myself on the edge of my seat on more than one occasion with this story.

Jaime and Chandler were beautifully chiseled. They were perfect for their roles and really became a part of me as I followed along side them. I felt their relationship grow like it was my own, I felt their hearts beating like mine as they helped the victim. And Aslan....oh how my heart loved that therapy dog! Of course, I'm a sucker for all animals!

Once again, 5 stars to the talented Mrs. Putman. Her story will take you on a journey you won't soon forget. The pages turned long into the night for me, and before I knew it, Jaime and Chandler's story came to an end. Definitely recommending this one with hats off and two thumbs up.

Writer, Cara Putnam tackles a controversial issue still today, despite the prevalence of . Early on, we witness the protagonist, Jaime deal with her PTSD as a result. In this story, Jaime at age 29, decides that she needs closure and takes steps to be heard. Unintended consequences follow and she finds herself in a situation, where she is in the limelight to a great extent and pressure comes to bare. The conflicts that follow are very realistic. As things hit critical mass, she realizes that those she has always kept at arm's length, are still there to support her and be what she needs in her time of greatest need. That includes the romance character that like Superman (even compared to him) saves the day (God helps too). Since this is a Christian story, the situations end on a positive note.

I enjoyed the writing. This woman can write a novel. You visualize the scenes clearly. You have just enough information about the characters. The pacing was good and kept my interest. Some points were overlooked (one important upcoming scene was discussed then completely skipped however, it was never picked up again though it was important to the story, except as an aside mention many chapters later, like an afterthought). I am now interested in the two earlier stories in this series. I did not feel I missed anything important reading the series out of order.

Now for the critical part of this review. I have lived through the aftermath, only my experience was a great deal worse. Thus I find, the fact in the midst of all this turmoil, the protagonist wanted and was willing to consider Chandler as a romantic partner. Sure, I am not saying it isn't possible just not likely. I know it can happen, I just find it unrealistic. I attended a lot of support groups when I started dealing with my abuse (more than one a week). I had men ask me out during that time, I WAS NOT INTERESTED! Most of the other women, I met in support groups were not seeking romantic connections either. We did discuss this topic frequently. I did change my tune about four years later, so I will give this story the benefit of the doubt. This is more a fairy tale but the trauma was different so there is that. I just don't see it in light of other things that happened to Jaime at the same time (let's just say her life really unravels quickly, in fact mine did in the same way!).

Amazingly, I saw two other paradoxes that niggled at me throughout the story. I'm not saying they couldn't happen, I just think that they are improbable. One, despite the fact that Jaime will often be stymied when under duress or fear being momentarily unable to speak, she has chosen a job which demands speaking under stress as a career, she is a public defender. Which brings me to my next challenge, having been victimized repeatedly in her life, she defends people accused of crimes. I kinda get it. She knows that some people are wrongly accused or treated to harshly by the system based on the charges and extenuating circumstances, but I think it far more likely that someone, who has experienced such victimization would work as a prosecutor seeking justice for victims.

The author does briefly touch upon this apparent contradiction but I didn't quite understand her argument. I am guessing that Jaime saw the system victimizing people, the only case really mentioned is a man, who is being prosecuted for having to many pain pills that he legitimately needs for pain. I doubt that is what she was tasked with all day long. Frankly, I didn't buy it as a reason.

Finally, a last point, while Jaime has a strong support system, not a lot of people do when they share this type of abuse. Again, this was a popular topic in the support groups I attended.
Especially, today where people have become so narcissistic, truly this portion of the storyline really seemed like a fairy tale. Your results may vary.

Cara Putnam writes legal thrillers, romantic suspense, and historical romance. I have read a number of her books, including the previous two books in this series. With her latest installment of Delayed Justice, the title fits perfectly. I couldn't wait to read Jamie's story and see what darks secrets lie in her past and how she will deal with them.

My favorite aspect of the Delayed Justice was including The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis as a tool to show God's love even when the persons past isn't perfect. Chandler did a wonderful job suggesting and donating a copy for Jamie. I really enjoyed Putnam's insight into the story. I have read the Chronicles of Narnia a number of times and seen the movie. I even wrote two graduate level research papers in graduate school about the stories, but the profound insight into the story that reached into Jamie's soul brought tears to my eyes. I LOVED this part of the story. It was raw and real.

The emotions of Jamie ran true to everything I have ever read about victims about sexual assault. Putnam dug deep and really brought Jamie's past and present hurts to life. I kept feeling bad for Jamie, but kept cheering her on at the same time. She is definitely a strong heroine that I admired.

As for Chandler, he is an amazing hero. He loves Jamie even though he knows what happened in her past. He moved slow and kept praying for her to come to know Christ. He didn't rush her and proved that she was someone worth waiting for. Now that is a wonderful hero.

While the genre of Delayed Justice is romantic suspense, it does lay more heavily on romance than the suspense. A little bit of suspense was sprinkled throughout the novel with a climactic moment that came and went in two pages, but the novel didn't rely on the suspense element as much. The plot was more on the transformation of Jamie and the growing emotions between Chandler and Jamie. I did enjoy how Putnam allowed the story to end without the cliché proposal or wedding scene. Thank you!

Overall, Delayed Justice by Cara Putnam does dive deeply into the emotions and thoughts of the aftershock of a sexual assault. I loved the characters in this story and hope to see them more in future novels. The spiritual element in this story is wonderful and would be a great way to share Jesus with others. Delayed Justice is intriguing and raw. I really enjoyed reading this novel.

I received a complimentary copy of Delayed Justice by Cara Putnam from Thomas Nelson Publishing, but the opinions stated are all my own.

Delayed Justice is a captivating and sometimes chilling story of a woman's desire to be rid of the shadows that haunt her. Jamie’s story is like that of many women and how she handles herself as she faces what she hid from for years with determination. Even when doubts plagued her, she stood firm, relying on the support of those around her and loved her.

Delayed Justice comes at a time when our country is hurting and struggling with current events. I think we could all take a note from the pages in this story. If we call on the Lord to heal our hearts, He will answer. Through Him, we can face the shadows and shine His light on the darkened corners.

Delayed Justice is the thrilling third book in the legal suspense series, Hidden Justice. Like the first two books in the series, Delayed Justice offers a riveting mix of legal drama, romance, strong friendship, faith, personal discovery and suspense. Delayed Justice is particularly stirring and tender as the characters face horrific cases - personal, past and present.

Jamie Nichols works tirelessly as a criminal defence attorney to give a voice to those who don’t have one, fighting against the powerlessness she faced in her own childhood. Now in her adulthood she has decided to press charges against her abuser, but she knows it might bring about fierce retaliation. When she is asked to assist a young girl facing the same horrors she herself faced, Jamie knows she can’t refuse. Even if it means working closely with retired veteran, Chandler Bolton and his Golden Retriever therapy dog.

Delayed Justice takes readers on a journey of healing, of justice and voices standing strong. Delayed Justice and its message of speaking out against sexual abuse, especially when committed by people in positions of power, is incredibly timely. Jamie’s story is powerful and moving, as is the story of the young girl Jamie and Chandler work to help. Delayed Justice explores the heartbreaking process of trialing these cases in the US legal system.

Family, friendship and romance all play important parts in Delayed Justice. Jamie struggles with her relationship with her parents. Launching the case against her abuser gives Jamie a chance to reveal her pain to her parents and to start rebuilding the relationship between them. Fortunately, Jamie has an incredible support system around her (even if she is sometime reluctant to draw upon it). Her friends (many of which are familiar faces from the first two books in the series) bring tension release to the story and very needed support to Jamie. Finally, the romance is a delightful part of Delayed Justice. While Chandler and Jamie do not have a smooth first meeting, it isn’t long before the two are working together and supporting each other through the challenges they both face. The chapter sections written from Chandler’s perspective, which alternate with those written from Jamie’s point of view, also give readers a more in-depth understanding of the pain he has faced and his growing feelings for Jamie.

Jamie undergoes a journey of spiritual transformation in Delayed Justice. Through gentle (and persistent) nudges from her caring friends and frank discussions with Chandler, as well as reconciling the events of her childhood, Jamie is able to move from distrusting and doubting God to entering a firm relationship with him.

At times a little disjointed and heavily dialog focused, Delayed Justice has a complex and layered story but is quick and easy to read. With a constant underlying tension and a spike of action right at the end, Delayed Justice will keep readers hooked to this thrilling tale of justice.

The publishers provided an advanced readers copy of this book for reviewing purposes. All opinions are my own.

DELAYED JUSTICE is the third book in Ms. Putman's series (Imperfect Justice, Beyond Justice and DELAYED JUSTICE) but it easily stands alone. Jaime is a lawyer because she wants revenge on her uncle who sexually molested her as a child. She connects with Chandler who has a dog who is a counselor -- or rather used as a comfort animal for some clients.

Ms. Putman said in an interview I read somewhere that DELAYED JUSTICE was a very hard book for her to write. I can see that. It has dark undertones and is heavy at times, but the message is needed. The faith message is very subtle but at least it's there.

I was not ever sexually molested, but this book was very hard for me to read. I hurt for Jaime. I was also bothered greatly by the ending. It didn't feel resolved to me--especially Chandler. I won't give away any spoilers, but I was left with questions.

Ms. Putman is an excellent writer, engaging, and she obviously knows her law, so it is fascinating how she uses lawyers in her books a lot. Fitting, for a lawyer who is also a writer, wouldn't you say? Fans won't want to miss this book, and will be kept guessing with the suspense. Will justice be served?

I was given a copy free. All opinions are my own.

Romantic suspense/mystery is my favorite genre. I used to stick to vintage books from the Golden Age of Detective Fiction, but in the last few years, Christian authors have been writing top-quality books, and i'm finding many new favorites. When Delayed Justice came my way (that sounds like a song title, don't you think?), featuring a lawyer, a military hero, a service dog and a little girl, I gladly accepted an advance copy.

There are layers to this book - no one-dimensional characters or plot holes.  The heroine was "damaged" by her past but she went on to become a strong, intelligent woman.  The hero was... a hero. I like over-the-top good and Godly men.  :)  Over the course of the book, with the help of  Chandler and her friends, Jaime discovers that God is the one and only true healer, and He is more than sufficient.

The use of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was beautiful. It's hard to do non-cheesy evangelism in fiction, but Ms. Putman did a fine job.

Delayed Justice and the other two books in the Hidden Justice series, Beyond Justice and Imperfect Justice, feature a trio of lawyers devoted to  (surprise! getting justice in some very contemporary social issues. The legal aspect of the book was well-developed without becoming tedious.  She did a good job with her portrayal of PTSD (and also civilian PTSD), and  I liked the way she presented the trauma of sexual abuse with strong emotion instead of just a factual recital.

This is a good book, and I'm going to read the previous two books in the series. I'm always glad to find a new author of Christian mystery and suspense books!

Wow! This is such a fabulous novel! I loved it. Jaime was a great main character, my heart broke for her and I found myself wanting to give her a hug and be her friend! It was absolutely beautiful to watch her journey and character development from the start of the book to the end, and see her discover God's love for the first time! Chandler was just such a fabulous hero (one of my very favorites of this year!) I can't even begin to count how many times his kindness, thoughtfulness, and chivalry warmed my heart and totally turned me into a puddle! And his therapy dog, Aslan, oh my word! Every time Aslan appeared on the page I ended up either chuckling at his antics or blinking back happy tears at the sweetness and power of his presence, let me tell you Aslan is THE PERFECT name for this amazing dog, I loved him so much and I know every other reader of this book will too!
I LOVED that The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe played such a big role in this book. LWW is one of my all time favorites and it was so perfectly and flawlessly woven into the story that I am speechlessly awestruck by Cara's amazing writing!
Overall, I loved this book so much! It has it all, suspense, drama, romance, humor, a fabulous faith story, and some amazing character development. I loved everything about it, what more can I say?! Definitely one for the keeper shelf! I highly recommend Delayed Justice and very much look forward to reading more of Cara's suspense novels in the future!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher, which did not influence my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions are one hundred percent my own.

What a journey you are about to begin as you turn these pages, now this is the third book in this series, but they can all stand alone, with some recurring characters.
With this story, actually there are three stories here, in a way related, but different, and you will become engrossed in all, and want answers, and hope all these characters will survive, you will soon care a lot about them.
There are some very deep subjects here, and you will be jumping with fear, and then you will fall in love with a beautiful, smart dog. I wanted to get to the end of the book to know all the answers, but at the same time I didn’t want to leave, a real page-turner.

I received this book from the publisher Thomas Nelson, and was not required to give a positive review.

DELAYED JUSTICE is book three in the Hidden Justice series by Cara Putman. This book deals with sexual abuse a topic that so many deal with today. So many keep quiet afraid to say anything. This is a very powerful and intense story that is bound to capture your attention the whole way through this story.

"God is always there. Even when we can't see Him. When He seems most hidden, He is most present. I've found in those moments He is closer than my breath. I have to choose whether to see Him, but He's there." (p 167)

A powerfully moving story filled with inspiration, compassion and hope. So much more than a thrilling suspense or captivating romance -- though there are elements of both in Delayed Justice. This is the kind of read you feel your way through. The kind that leaves you with an ache in your heart and the desire to lean closer into the Lord. And I so appreciate the faith elements in this story! It brings light to the darkness of some really tough subject matter. And there are so many quotable quotes that I think I must have copied half of the book into my inspirations journal!

"Was God pursuing her through friends who brought Him into routine conversations?" (p 232)

Yes, Jaime, God is pursuing you in the most marvelous way. Christian friends come along side her during the biggest battle of her life -- including her neighbour, Chandler. He's a family counselor at the Vet Center with a therapy dog named Aslan. Seriously -- how can you not love a hero who names his golden retriever Aslan?! I did some serious Lion, Witch and Wardrobe fan-girling during my reading too -- thanks to Chandler. He's a military vet who has dealt with his own kind of trauma and feels called to help others deal with theirs.

"Father, I need You to show me what to do. Would You restrain me from doing too much? Help me to obey your prompting without overstepping my position and pretending I can do what only You can do." (p 152)

Brought together to help a traumatized little girl, Jaime and Chandler begin a complicated relationship. There are so many layers to their personal stories and their romance. And then there are two suspense plots and the legal angle which builds to this incredible moment of triumph that brought me to tears. She did it! Jaime found her voice and fought her fight and it felt so good!

A stunning addition to Putman's Hidden Justice series! I want more!!!!!!

I guess I never actually read the blurb on what this book is about--just having read the other books in the series, I went straight into it. I didn't expect the theme of child molestation--one of those subjects that may not be taboo, but is definitely 'handle-with-care'--but to my [to be fair, naive] eyes, the author handled it with compassion, grace, and incredible, raw emotion. The other two books in the series were good, but this one . . . wow.

It is intense; maybe not as much in the suspense aspect as the previous books, but just in the incredible wounds of Jaime's past and her fight to overcome them in the present. With his own experiences with PTSD and his job in counseling, Chandler is the perfect hero for her; he knows not to push, not to rush her, not to invade her space. In everything he does, his actions show that he cherishes her, something that has been missing from her life.

And I love that the Jaime and Caroline's friendship is brought to the forefront, by virtue of Caroline's needing a temporary place to stay. In spite of Jaime's tendencies to close herself off, she and Caroline are still very good friends--they know when to dig deep and how to uphold each other, even when they don't have the same philosophy of life (at least to start). Caroline's insistence on praying for her friend is inspiring; this book whetted my appetite even more to find out her story. Hopefully it will be forthcoming!

Scandal, abuse, and allegations are running rampant in our society and this is nothing new. Don’t reach for books like Delayed Justice and expect a feel-good read. Books that tackle the tough stuff are “need to” reads, they are an exercise in empathy, they expand our understanding of the human experience, they change the way we see the world around us.

The nature of Jaime’s childhood makes her professional success and sense of humor all the more impressive. Her courage in pursuing charges against her abuser is inspiring. Jaime’s observation of Chandler’s Captian America like characteristics extend beyond the physique of a retired veteran. He is a natural protector and not one to back down from a challenge.

Despite the heavy topics and the high standard set by the previous installments, I have to say that this book is my favorite of the series. Delayed Justice is joining its predecessors on my all-time favorites shelf, I highly recommend it, and eagerly anticipate more stories from Cara Putman!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a review. The opinions expressed are my own.

After all these years, Jaime Nichols has finally found her voice to demand justice of the man who molested her when she was a child, her uncle, Colonel Dane Nichols. Jaime, terrified of the man because of his repeated assaults, has become an attorney and honed her voice to give other victims the chance to speak out that she did not have. What she doesn't realize is that the senate is holding hearings for Dane to become a general and NOTHING will come between Dane and his ambition.

Retired veteran and veteran advocate, Chandler Bolton and his comfort dog, Aslan, meet Jaime as she tries to help a little girl who's been molested. As he learns of Jaime's past, Chandler determines that NOTHING will hurt her while he's around.

Jaime and Chandler are interesting characters, each fighting demons from their past. It's a good Christian read.

Tough topic for the final book of the Hidden Justice Series. Main character Jaime was abused by her uncle at eight years old. Twenty years later she has the courage to pursue charges against him.

The author does a good job of painting the impacts of abuse on Jaime as an adult. It influences so many areas of her life.

My favorite characters in this novel were Chandler and his dog Aslan. I hadn't heard of comfort dogs previously, but can see how they'd be beneficial.

Delayed Justice, by Cara C. Putman
Read by Siiri Scott
Contemporary Christian Fiction
Audiobook

Characters
Jaime Nichols - sexually abused by uncle as a child
Chandler Bolton - social worker

At first I was concerned that too much detail might come out regarding the main character's abuse at the hand of her uncle when she was a child. I was impressed that no sensational detail was included. I applaud the author for her tact. The reader can come to their own conclusions without the aid of uncomfortable graphic elements.

Second, I love when a young woman has a group of supportive, loving girlfriends who would drop everything to help. Such was the case for Jaime. Plus she had the added bonus of them praying for her, even though she was not happy with God for not stopping the horrors inflicted on her as a child.

Third, the aspect of how to deal with God as she looked back at those circumstances was done fairly well.

Fourth, the friendship turned romance was gentle and okay. I didn’t buy her trusting Chandler, though. It just came on too quickly. Twenty years of being afraid and untrusting of men would take a bit more time. I also didn’t buy their chemistry. But Chandler was patient and gave Jaime every reason to eventually trust him.

Her uncle Dane was just too far fetched, and the maniacal character that had a grudge against Chandler was a strange addition that didn’t seem to fit.

Interesting story, though.

Should you have a choice of reading this or listening to it, choose reading it. That's all I need to say. 😏

Wow. I’ve recently discovered Cara Putman’s books after a friend recommended them to me and I’m so glad I did! I work in the justice system and Cara Putman’s knowledge and first-hand experience in the legal field is a breath of fresh air when it comes to realism and believability. This particular book was extra special. Trigger warning: it deals with extremely difficult topics (child molestation), but she is able to craft the story without unnecessary detail and also without oversimplification. Reading this story was healing in a sense to me after having to transcribe the live witness testimonies of two separate child victims in the last few weeks. The book actually helped me process some of the grief and anger I had felt when I heard these children tell their stories (and yes... with support dogs at their feet...). Putman captures the emotions and the legal system steps extremely well, and brings redemption and relatability into the many-faceted pain involved with these stories and cases.

Delayed Justice was okay. I found the pace slow and a lot of repetition. It was interesting to learn about therapy/comfort dogs and I thought the author did a remarkable job at handling a tough subject. I recommend reading the series in order. I only read Delayed Justice and I felt I was missing something in the beginning. I will share my complete review soon.

Definitely a page turner. This book dealt with a deep and timely topic in a respectful and compassionate manner. Given the nature of the emotional turmoil, it is difficult to do justice to a romance evolving in the midst, but this one was done well. Full review is at my website.

I received this book complimentary from the author. I was not required to give a positive review. All of the opinions I have expressed here are my own.

A fast-paced thriller that kept me on my toes! I really enjoyed this story and felt that it was a book that would make me want to read the others in the series. The characters were strong and realistic keeping a pace that made you feel as though you are racing with them to find the answers.
