Bite Me Spider: An Eight-Legged Nightmare by Nora Penn is much more than a simple horror story. It is a story about hope and the possibility for a cure for cancer. As Hannah, a wife and mother, lays dying in a hospital bed, her only hope, and a bizarre one at that, is that a spider can save her life. The spider takes a bite and we fade to black. The Black Hermit spider works a miracle and cures Hannah. However, that cure doesn't come without a price, and the spiders wreak havoc with their deadly venom, creating a sense of doom and a highly frightened citizenship. This is a scary, creepy story mixed with a bit of humanity to make it more pleasant. If you are a fan of spiders, and especially if you are not, this is a compelling story that resonates on many levels.

Bite me Spider is a horror book that brings back the hero that has to save his family and the world, doing some shady actions. There is definitely more to it than just a straight horror story. Yes, we’re dealing with an invasion of giant mutant spiders. Yes, there are some bloody sequences. Yes, there is stuff here that will haunt your nightmares every single night. But there’s an important human side in the display that creates an interesting plotline. This is also a story about a family that has to live with a terrible illness and decides to put everything at risk to save each other. There are a lot of emotions here.
Nora Penn is a gifted writer. This is a very interesting book with a great plot, attractive to every horror novel readers out there while offering some depth to it. It’s dark, it’s bloody, it’s twisted, but it’s also about love and hope.

Bite Me Spider is a horror plot with family drama and a story of James Dresden, who goes above and beyond to save his family, planet from these horrible eight legged spiders that are path of destruction. Well, it seems like watching a horror movie where the villains are spiders. So the concept is nothing new but what is new is how it started where a family opted for a radical new treatment, the bite of genetically modified Spider. The author shows the advancement of science at one end and on the other hand warns of the consequences.

Unabashedly an action story, this isn’t a book that takes itself too seriously. We have ever-growing giant spiders that not only defy the second law of thermodynamics, but are also so far removed from reality in their anatomy that no arachnologist would consider them arachnids, let alone spiders. To be clear, this isn’t a criticism; the spiders also talk and even get to narrate a section of the book, so it’s not like it’s a research failure, just a fantastical style choice.

A post-apocalyptic tale, main characters are naturally thin on the ground, the majority having been eaten (or rather, turned to mush, exploded and left uneaten; it’s not clear how the spiders actually get the sustenance to multiply and grow as they do) in the opening of the book.

As for the human characters we do have, again: it’s an action piece, not a character study, so do not expect depth, just a few archetypes to provide a cast and/or move the plot along.

All-in-all, if you like B-movie style “mutated animal monsters” stories, then this a book for you.

Was this a first timer book?

Reminded me of a B-Flick movie, was good but kinda simple as far as plot goes. Seemed all over the place.
