This may be blatant instalove but pair this with Cochet’s tendency for hardcore fluff with a good dose of sexy and one can’t really begrudge the King of Frost getting a second chance at love with an elf who too, deserves another shot at being happy. Cheers!

This was a perfect little send off to what has consistently been a joyous M/M fantasy series full of light, positivity and love.

In this final instalment of the North Pole City Tales, we witness the royal festivities in the lead up to Prince Jack Frost and Rudy Rein Dear’s highly anticipated wedding.

There’s much to do and heaps of fun and frivolity to be had, but Jack’s father, Eirik, the King of Frost, isn’t particularly in the mood to socialise and make merry, preferring to close himself off in his library with his books.

Eirik has spent centuries living in solitude, since the loss of his Queen, but his lonely way of life is challenged when Dasher Rein Dear, Rudy’s most tenacious elf brethren, sets his sights on winning Eirik’s icy heart.

Ardently pursuing the King of Frost, one (initially) unwelcomed interaction at a time, Dasher is determined to show Eirik that, despite their mutual past heartbreaks, love and a renewed joy of life is still within reach.

Although fast in pace and relationship development—as is the norm in this particular series—I enjoyed Eirik and Dasher’s second chance romance a great deal, to the point that they may have been my favourite couple of this charming six-book series.

This story was all things sweet and lovely, and I very much appreciated the feel-good vibe that was so prevalent throughout the series at large. The world-building and the easy-breezy romances were definitely the highlight of this particular saga for me. It was a fun little Christmastime inspired romp and, truth be told, I’m sad it’s over.

Gorgeous ending to this absolutely delightful series filled with Christmas joy and lashings of love.

Dasher's heart has been broken before and he knows the pain the King of Winter hides behind his stiff exterior.

The sparks between them lit up the page with a gentle humour tucked inside the teasing and gradual acceptance that each had found a new start.

The King's Courage is definitely my new favorite book in this series... Oh the tears and the laughter!
Ms. Cochet has outdone herself with this book in the series... she pulls out all the stops and truly weaves a tale of amazing love and redemption. What an awesome, heartwarming, wonderful and affirming read this was. Now all I have to do is keep wishing for another such North Pole story in my stocking for Christmas again next year!!

*I received an ecopy of this book from the publisher. This has not influenced my review.*

I had been anticipating this one since... Book 4? Whenever it was that Dasher first set his sights on the king. Granted I only had to anticipate it for a few days since I binge-read the series, but still. The king was a character we never got to know very well, and Dasher seemed a little more mature and deep than the other elves we'd seen so far but still playful, so it seemed like the romance would be a good one. And I was right---this relationship was a little more serious and believable for me than the others in the series because of these two characters' maturity and pasts, and I liked the book all the more for it. But don't worry, this book still had the same sweet, easy, light romance that readers have come to expect, and once these two did start wooing each other, their relationship turned out to be the most fun and playful one yet. I loved the flirting and how they kept trying to one-up/fluster the other, like when they were using Eirik's powers to send and receive whispers on the wind in order to whisper naughty things to each other and try to make each other blush all throughout lunch one day. And I literally laughed out loud during some parts, like when Eirik joined in the Rein Dear games and, well, you'll see what happened and why it was so funny when you read the book ;-) There were even some nice non-romance things in the book, like touching moments between Eirik and Jack (father and son).

I believe this was the last in the series (unfortunately, since I've enjoyed all the books), but it would seem the author saved the best for last as this was definitely my favorite one! To be honest, I didn't expect to enjoy this series as much as I did since I'm not generally a fan of fluffy books or of novellas/shorts in general. But, while this was not a particularly realistic series, it had creative world-building, sweet romances, and hilarious Christmas-based sexual euphemisms, and it was overall a lot of fun and just what I was in the mood for!

*Note: Even though each book has different main characters, I recommend reading these in order.*

*I've read this book multiple times. This review was written after my 1st read.*

Just one little 2nd read update: The scene during the Rein Dear games is perfection, and I was looking forward to it the whole time, and it did not disappoint 😄 It's so fun.

I look forward to revisiting North Pole City every time a new book comes out! This series is the perfect mix of sweet, sexy, magic, and holiday feels.

This time around, readers get to visit Jack Frost’s palace in Svalbard, Norway. It was equally as enchanting a setting as North Pole City.

description

From the first book, the King of Frost has been an enigmatic character. He’s a curmudgeonly recluse, but he clearly cares for his family. Dasher, with all of his brazen charm and disregard for the rules, was just the Christmas elf to break through Eirik Frost’s cold hard shell.

When the book starts, Eirik and Dasher are already halfway in love. Since the two first met each other in book 5, they’ve been slowly falling for each other. Dasher’s happy about it, Eirik less so.

I couldn’t help but grin like a fool each time Eirik tried to convince himself that he felt nothing but irritation for the younger elf. He was so obviously smitten!

But slowly, against the backdrop of Jack and Rudy’s wedding, Eirik finally lets himself feel love again. Since his wife’s death, he’s shunned all happiness and warmth.

I thoroughly enjoyed how bold Dasher was. Every time Dasher decides to break the rules and walks right into Eirik’s personal life, Eirik protests a little bit less.

description

Readers learn more about both MCs’ pasts, and it just made me root for them even more. They were just perfect for each other.

While there is a bit of drama in the second half of the novella, I would still say that this is a fairly low-angst read. Once Eirik gives into what he really wants, he and Dasher are well on their way to a happy ever after!

Overall, this was a very enjoyable holiday read. If you’re looking for an MM series with lots of Christmas cheer, give the North Pole City Tales a try!

This was very sweet low angst romance between Dasher Rein Dear and Eirik Frost, Jack's father and the King of Winter. There was more to Dasher than I thought, and who knew that King Frost could be so romantic! I enjoyed their whirlwind romance together with wedding bells and Christmas festivities that preceded Jack and Rudy's wedding. It was the perfect ending to the series - everybody got their happy ever after, and all the past hurts were laid to rest. Loved it!

The King’s Courage is the sixth and final book in Charlie Cochet’s charming North Pole City Tales series. I have a soft spot in my heart for this sweet and playful series that imagines the Christmas tales come to life. Over the series we have met Kringle as the mayor of North Pole City, Jack Frost, the toy soldiers who protect the realm, and of course, the Rein Dears who fly the bi-planes that deliver all the toys. The series is clever and fun and Cochet manages to infuse the stories with a lot of charm as little holiday details are worked into the books.

Over the course of the series, we have been anticipating the big wedding between Jack and Rudy and in this final book, we see that play out. But the focus here is on Dasher and Eirik, and the two have been dancing around each other for a while now. Or more like Dasher has been sniffing around Eirik and finding himself rebuffed as Eirik is too scared to really explore anything with him. So here we get a payoff on two fronts as we get both the wedding and the resolution to this relationship.

The guys are sweet together and though they fall pretty hard and fast once Eirik lets go, they are charming enough to make it work. I wish I had a better feel for why Eirik suddenly sees Dasher in a different way, and why he is now ready to explore it. But I enjoyed their relationship and the way Dasher helps Eirik open up and find some happiness. At the same time, we see some more depth in Dasher as he shares his own painful past and the men are able to connect about their shared experiences.

This was a sweet conclusion to this series. Eirik and Dasher were cute dancing around each other. There danger stalking them all was a good twist as well. I loved seeing everyone happy at the end of this series. All the reindeer have their happily ever afters and everything ties up with Jack and Rudy's wedding.

"The King's Courage" ist mein Favorit.

My annual visits to North Pole City have become a much-loved Christmas tradition, and when I saw that this year, it is finally the King of Frost’s turn to find happiness, I was very excited. I saw little hints of what the author might have in mind in last year’s installment, but the reality of getting to watch Eirik deal with his much-denied feelings under the relentless, if very loving, onslaught of Dasher’s advances, was a true treat. North Pole City and Winter Wonderland are as magical as ever, and I just love the fascinating world that Charlie Cochet has created from a mixture of winter legends and stories.

I absolutely loved The King’s Courage by Charlie Cochet. I’ve had many friends’ praise Charlie’s writing and storytelling ability, and now that I have finally gotten the chance to read one of her books, I have to agree. The King’s Courage is fabulous. Charlie had me laughing and giggling and then falling in love with Dasher and Eirik, even though they made me cry three times. And I still can’t believe how much feels and plot Charlie managed to get into such a short book.

I have read books twice as long that hasn’t been this detailed. The writing makes you feel like you are there with them and experiencing what they are doing and feeling. I love this play on the North Pole and Santa and his eight reindeer. Except, instead of their being reindeer, they’re the fabulous Rein Dears who are elves and work at North Pole City in the Rein Dear Squadron under the watchful eye of Mayor Kringle.

In the sixth book in the North Pole Tales series, we get the wedding of Jack Frost and Rudy Rein Dear which is only three weeks away. Everyone travels to Jack’s palace in Svalbard, Norway, where the happy couple will exchange vows beneath the northern lights. There are festivities planned that lead up to the wedding, and Dasher Rein Dear, a Christmas elf, eagerly anticipates the fun. He also is eager to stay under the same roof as the blustering winter spirit who’s caught his eye, the King of Frost, Jack’s father. Dasher meets the King of Frost, Eirik, in the fourth book, Loving Blitz, when they were searching for an Elska rose and the King of Frost happens to have one. Dasher has been fascinated with him since then.

But a long-ago tragedy has left Eirik afraid ever to love again. As the King of Frost, Eirik maintains his distance from everyone, including his only son, Jack. With everybody coming to the palace he’s forced to interact during the festivities and is worn down by the young Christmas elf who insists on intruding on Eirik’s solitude. Dasher is determined to find a way to show the lonely king that his heart still beats and he shouldn’t fear to allow it to beat for another.
I loved watching Dasher force Eirik to come out of his shell and have fun again.

They are a great couple that compliments each other. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series, and I have already picked up the first two book in the series to get started. If they are as good as this book is then I will be a happy camper. I would like to thank Levi Read for allowing me the honor of reviewing this book since he usually snaps all of Charlie’s books as fast as they come out and claims them as his precious.

A sweet, exciting, and endearing conclusion to a beautiful holiday series, Charlie Cochet brings it in with a homerun with this tale of Eirik, the King of Frost, and Dasher, a, uh, dashing member of Rudy’s Rein Deer squad.

Dasher’s friend Rudy Rein Deer is finally marrying Jack Frost. The wedding of the year will take place at Jack’s palace in Svalbard, Norway, but Dasher isn’t looking forward to the wedding as much as he’s looking forward to the opportunity to get closer to Eirik, Jack’s father. Dasher sees beyond the royal persona to the man beneath and he’s hoping to convince the king of his feelings and longing to someday having those feelings returned.

When the king lost his queen long ago, he locked away his frozen heart, but when he and Dasher have a chance to really talk and Dasher relates his own story of a lost love, that heart begins to thaw.

Of course, evil forces try to draw them apart and put Dasher in mortal danger. Can Eirik, Kringle, Jack, and Rudy find a way to save the day?

This isn’t intended as a standalone as most of the characters from the previous series are present for this wedding and play a role in the story. If you haven’t ever read these books, by all means, go get them! It’s a wonderful series and this story provides the perfect ending to a set of stories that will warm your heart on a cold winter’s day.

Lovely end to a lovely series.

It was nice to get to see so many things finally come to fruition: Jack and Rudy's wedding, Dasher finally getting Eirik to stop running from him.

I think my favorite thing about this one, though, was getting to see Eirik use his powers.

Some Favorite Quotes:
Three weeks of Christmas-elf mischief, extravagant balls, frivolous parties, and--Kringle help him--socializing. It was enough to make him want to hop on the first glacier to the Antarctic.

"He asked to borrow a book. I would never refuse anyone a book."

"I don't know when it happened, but I think my heart was yours before my head even knew."

This is the final book of this awesome series. When Dasher recognizes the need for love in the heart of King Frost (Jack's Dad), he finds himself drawn to him. Even though the king denies the attraction, he eventually is lured into Dasher's arms. This is a story about broken hearts and healing love. What a FABULOUS way to end the series. A MUST READ.

I kept reading the North Pole City Tales, because for one the series got better with each book and because I wanted to know if Dasher could melt the Kings heart.

Wow, those 2 could melt the North Pole. They're so sweet together. And sexy. I think there was a heatwave in Norway after those Rein Dear Games.

Such a lovely way to end the series. There was lots of build up where Dasher was interested in the King, but seeing Eirik let Dasher in and find love again was beautiful. Hearing Dasher’s backstory gave me a small case of the leaky eye, but it was well done. I loved this series and this world.

"Courage and the King", the sixth volume of "North Pole City Tales", is a novella that, in general, undoubtedly surprises readers in many respects. Let's start with the fact that the King of Frost is one of this novella's lovebirds. Although in earlier volumes the author woven into the story small cautions as to this fact, it doesn't change the intensity of the revelation concerning this serious, cold king's love life. And here comes another reason to be surprised, because in "Courage and the King" we get to know this other, so far unknown to us, face of the King of Frost. In this novella, however, Eirik is not the only one who surprises us, because Dasher, or more precisely his story is also incredibly astonishing. Well, I think nobody expected that, especially since Dasher's past is really moving. So if we take into account everything we didn't expect when we started reading this series and this volume, the whole thing is quite surprising, just as I said at the beginning.

A very beautiful and interesting motif of this novella is striving to heal one's heart. This theme applies to both main characters, which emphasizes its importance as well as adds extra depth to it. In fact, this is the main subject of this story, although, to some extent, it seems hidden between the lines. Nevertheless, here and there Charlie Cochet allows the reader to clearly see that it drives the story and constitutes its essence. In fact, this volume is not about love itself, but about another chance for a great, beautiful feeling, about healing the heart, healing old wounds and loving someone else, someone who is not one's first great love.

Another extremely important topic that we find in "Courage and the King" is coming to terms with the past, guilt, pain and loss. There's no doubt that this subject refers to both main characters, but it is definitely most evident in Dasher's case. And that's because his past returns, opens old wounds and enters the present. I admit that the way the author develops and presents this topic is wonderful, touching and noteworthy. Something like this can't be easily forgotten. Charlie Cochet really showed the readers that she can move them deeply even when they don't expect it. Beauty combined with sadness that brings tears to our eyes, that's how we can describe it the shortest and most accurate way.

In summary, "Courage and the King" is a really good part of the series. Although the story is rather simple and the feelings between the characters develop quickly, the novella touches us deeply. The strength of this installment of "North Pole City Tales" are the tears we have shed reading it and our delight over its romantic side.

___________________

„Courage and the King”, szósty tom „North Pole City Tales”, to nowelka, która ogólnie rzecz ujmując niewątpliwie zaskakuje czytelników pod wieloma względami. I tu pojawia się kolejny powód do zdziwienia, gdyż w „Courage and the King” poznajemy inne, nieznane nam do tej pory oblicze Króla Mrozu.

Niemniej jednak, tu i tam Charlie Cochet pozwala aby czytelnik wyraźnie zobaczył, że napędza on fabułę i stanowi jej esencję.

Podsumowując, „Courage and the King” to naprawdę dobra część serii.

What a brilliant way to end a series(if it has to end). Not only do we get to experience Dasher and Eirik, the King of Frost's romance but we also get Jack & Rudy's wedding. Lovely all the way around.

Blogger Note: This is a combined review for the last three because frankly I can't imagine just reading one of the series, for this reader its all or nothing and as I've broken the series into 2 parts for my Saturday Series Spotlights on my blog I decided that's how I would divide up the reviews as well.

Having read the first three books in less than 2 days time and seeing as the final book wasn't released until the 20th, I decided to wait until the 19th to begin #4(Loving Blitz) because I knew that once I started Loving I would go directly into Disarming Donner(#5) and then I'd have a heartbreakingly near week-long wait for the finale, The King's Courage. So anywho, on to my second half series review.

As with so many series that each installment centers on a different couple, it takes a couple of chapters to get into each new pair because I'm just not ready to let go of the previous duo. Well, North Pole City Tales was no different really but seeing as this is more of a holiday novella series, I tried to open my heart before beginning each new entry and it worked because Cupid/Blitzen, Donner/Calder, and Dasher/Eirik were all brilliant. I just can't get over the creativity and imagination the author put into this Christmas universe. I know I touched on it in my review for the first three but seriously, Rein Dear Squadron, Toy Solider Army, Elves, King of Frost, and my personal favorite the Mayor Kringle. Its just such a unique take on the legendary characters we've come to love with the holidays and a wonderfully adult version that sets your pulse racing.

If you are looking for something different and yet scream Christmas spirit than North Pole City Tales is worth checking out. Don't think though that just because I said it screams Christmas spirit and is full of characters we were introduced to as children that its all happy happy with no drama because there is just the right amount to make NPCT a well rounded heartwarming journey. I wouldn't call it angst but there is some drama but there is also humor, lust, friendship, and tons of love. Now that the author has written the finale, if you haven't read it this is the perfect time to start. Charlie Cochet has once again proven that we are never too old to let the holiday magic into our hearts.

Well, what can I say? I've been waiting for this book since last Christmas and now that it's finally here it didn't just live up to my expectations, it surpassed them.

With every story in the North Pole City Tales series, there's a warmth and a sweetness behind the romances that just makes me love each book more than the last. As the final book in the series, The King's Courage is my ultimate favourite, unsurpassed by the others. It's beautiful, heartbreaking, and quite scandalous when it wants to be. It's everything I could have ever wanted from this story and more.

I can't say too much about the plot, because it would ruin the surprise, but I'll admit that I was crying before the book even reached the halfway mark, and again after that. There was so much emotion and story told in such few pages that it shouldn't have been possible to feel as connected to the story and the characters as deeply as I did. But the genius of this series is that each book has a link to the next, so we've known Dasher and the King since book one, even if their parts were small. We know them, we know their stories – or, at least, part of their stories – and there's less need for long explorations of who they are or their backgrounds.

Dasher was a bright, lovely character who reminded me of Vixen, a little. Both had been hurt and put on a mask to hide that hurt for too long. Eirik, the King, was a broken, lonely man until Dasher came along. Seeing them together, their chemistry is so brilliantly written, and I love how they become playful and open with each other. Yet it still manages to be gradual and gentle between them. There's heat – Holy Christmas, is there heat! – with the snowball fight and the whispers on the wind showing just how naughty they can be, but there's also tenderness and uncertainty, fear and doubt. In fact, it's probably the hottest, most scandalous book of the series, what with that beautiful moment of a father-son bonding conversation being sealed by Jack's parting words about that desk drawer!

Overall, I love it. From the world building, characterisation and plotting of the series, nothing has changed – it's just as brilliant as when I read the first book. Only, this time, I felt like I was returning to my favourite Christmas holiday spot, meeting old friends and celebrating their good fortune with them. The King's Courage might be the last in the series, but it's a perfect round up of all the stories, of the sweetness and spice, and a perfect ending for a perfect series. Charlie Cochet has surpassed themselves with this one.

I've just seen that the series will be compiled into a paperback, so guess what I'm getting for Christmas? Because this series is a re-read every single Christmas and there's no way I don't want a paperback where I can binge read from one to the other without even moving!

Favourite Quotes

“Eirik narrowed his eyes. “Why the blasted holly would you choose to sit in silence when faced with such merriment? You’re a Christmas elf. Frivolity and cheer are in your nature.”
“That’s true,” Dasher agreed, his smile warm. “It’s also in my nature to want to share such merriment with one I hold dear.”
Eirik scoffed. “Well, then, I suggest you go find him.”
“I already have.””

“Eirik let out a huff, but his eyes were alight with amusement. “What am I to do with you, Dasher Rein Dear?”
Love me.”

Dashing Dasher Melts the Heart of the Frost King!

I looked forward to this romance the moment the Frost King lost his temper with the very forward Dasher, and all but threatened to turn him into decorative ice sculpture for his garden.

The build up to Dasher winning the Heart of his King was a slow one, but I knew once it happened I would fall as hard for the Majestic Spirit of Winter as Dasher. King Eirik may have been as old as the first ❄snowflake❄ but inside he still had the Heart of a very strong, virile, and loving man. It would just take the love, patience, and empathy of someone who could relate to his suffering for him to be willing to give love a chance, once more.

I have LOVED each and every novella in the NPCT's Series, and I look forward to revisiting Winter Wonderland and North Pole City again...and again...and again.

This fantasy series, obviously penned for adults, would not have been loved as much without all the songs, and stories I learned about Santa, elves, Jack Frost, Rudolf and all his Reindeer brothers, when I was but a girl.

Charlie Cochet took beloved childhood dreams of fantastical people in a fantastical place and turned them into a very adult world of enchantment. A WORLD where I can indulge my romantic side...with ☕ cocoa and cookies 🍪 lots and lots of cookies! ✨🍪🌈🍪✨ Thank you, Charlie!

I've been reading this series for the few years (I read the first one, "Mending Noel," in 2014). I all of them I've read around Christmas time, which makes sense of course since they are holiday novellas. I enjoy them. This is another pleasant story in a series of pleasant romances.

"The King's Courage" is a sort of December/May romance, but when the characters are more or less immortal (they can be killed, but they won't die of old age), age is sort of... less of an issue I guess. And there are some funny moments between one of the main characters and his son who is about the same age as the other main character. This is one of those stories with a whole lot of gay men without any decent female characters and, at least that I can remember, no lesbians to speak of which always annoys me a little. Yeah, I know it's a gay romance but how many gay men do you know that don't know any lesbians or bisexual/pan ladies? Because I don't know any (that's because they know me, I guess, but still). But I still enjoy the stories overall.

Look, I doubt this is going to win any literary awards but if you just want something to make you smile and enjoy a few steamy moments--this is a good choice.

4.5 stars rounded up to 5 stars!!!

The last book in a fantastic holiday series!!! These enchanting characters in North Pole City were delightful. At first when Dasher was pursuing the King, I was thinking no way can this work. From the beginning of the series the King was so elusive and set apart and isolated from everyone.

I read the books in the series back to back so I noticed some inconsistencies. As it was fantasy I did not delve too deeply, or try to go too far below the surface. The king was so powerful why did he take so long tot hear when Dasher was calling, yet when Rudy in Book 2 called Jack heard right away. These powerful beings all had to be present and had Mayor Kindle as backup when Dasher went to meet with his ex. This had me scratching my head for a sec but I tried not to dwell

Anyway... I really enjoyed the ride into this fantasy land, it was really what I needed in this season. Sigh. I must confess if I read these books any other time they may not have passed 3 stars, but it was just what the doctor order for my holiday reading. I totally enjoyed the series.
