This was all charming and enjoyable, but I don't think my mind is in the mood for something straightforward and slice-of-life right now. Everything I read these days that is a slice of life will be deemed dull by me.

I’m blasting through this right now but I wanted to pause and take note of my feelings before I continue reading. I am absolutely in love with Ikoku Nikki. It isn’t a drama, but it isn’t a slice of life either. The pain and trauma of the characters simmer in the background and spark when the assumptions they have built on the foundations of coping fall. And its absolutely beautiful.
It makes my chest sink in understanding those pains. It makes my face burn in anticipation of the release of tears that come from the relief of seeing someone come out on the other side and still be loved.
On top of this, Yamashita’s art is wonderful. It dissolves from scene to scene. It leaves characters alone in panels that make them seem helpless, pitiful, and alone. Then it brings them together within the evening imaginaries of Takumi, who warmly sees her aunt as a hope for a new life.
I love this story, simply put. And I’m excited to read more.

很好看！最近看到亮點最高的漫畫。一開始是kindle unlimited推薦以為是百合漫才看的，但其實不是。故事大概是寫宅在家的小說家收養了父母意外雙亡的十五歲姪女的雙人生活跟心情，這種聽起來挺無聊的典型無病呻吟。內容嘛，既然主角是小說家，走向自然是所謂的文青風，但是對話又嚴厲又輕鬆，完全沒有做作感。想說日常生活裡的各種人情也就那樣還能怎樣？但看起來就是有趣。總之說故事功力之高深令我相當驚豔。另外，角色塑造一番棒！主要角色不用說，配角也好，連差不多路人等級的每個都很討人喜歡！
只是它的日文對我果然有點難。真心想購入日版紙本書。

No sé por qué después de una mini crisis me sentí atraída a leer este primer tomo pero no me arrepiento, encontré cierta familiaridad y comfort en los desiertos de Makio y Asa.
Me encantó este primer tomo aunque debo admitir que lloré más de una vez. Y sin darme cuenta, había terminado los primeros cinco capítulos.

Une fille de 15 ans perd ses parents et se retrouve colocataire avec sa tante, écrivaine un peu hors norme qui n'aime pas trop les contacts humains. Dans ce premier tome on touche juste la surface de l'histoire et on commence à connaitre un peu les personnages. J'aime bien la façon délicate et poétique dont on traite le deuil. Je lirai sûrement la suite.

Este manga trata bien el duelo y como a veces es imposible de transmitir con palabras lo mucho que te afecta. Me gusta mucho la relación que tienen Asa y Makio, como cada una aporta su grano de arena para que las dos crezcan.

Một cuốn nhật ký kì lạ về những điều muốn nói, và không muốn nói, chẳng cần quan tâm nội dung cũng không cần tính xác thực, chỉ đơn giản muốn viết gì thì viết. Vậy thôi...

J'aime quand les mangas nous présentent des personnes différentes qui évoluent dans une société où ce n'est pas facile de diverger de la norme, encore plus quand on est adulte, car "on devrait avoir compris". On l'a bien fait dans Otaku Otaku, Tome 1, mais Entre les lignes s'y attarde aussi, à travers le regard d'une adolescente qui est peut-être tombée sur la meilleure personne, dans sa situation qui sort de la norme. La franchise des personnages et de leurs choix est rafraichissante. Je suivrai ce manga avec intérêt.

Esta es la clase de historias que disfruto, un slice of life que nos muestra la evolución de personajes "distintos" que conectan y aprenden uno del otro por situaciones de la vida, específicamente "el duelo".
Es decir, por un lado tenemos a Makio, una novelista a mediados de sus treintas que tras enterarse de la muerte de su hermana y cuñado se reencuentra con su sobrina, una adolescente de 15 años. A pesar de no haber tenido una muy buena relación con su hermana decide hacerse cargo de su sobrina. Es entonces que su estilo de vida da un gran cambio porque poco a poco tendrá que adaptarse a convivir con otro ser humano. Por otro lado, tenemos a Asa, una chica de 15 años que tras la muerte de sus padres ahora vivirá con su tía, que dada su personalidad la hace descubrir una forma de expresarse y caer en cuenta que los "adultos" no son tan "rígidos" como hubiera pensado.
Lo que me gusta de esta historia es que vemos dos puntos de vista interconectados. Como adulta, Makio provee a Asa con tutela en cuanto a validar sus emociones y como adolescente, Asa nos comparte su perspectiva al lidiar con la situación. Principalmente, me va gustando la apertura a la expresión y comunicación entre este dúo del cúal apenas vamos conociendo el contexto de su presente. Por supuesto, también tendrán que lidiar con sus conflictos internos e inseguridades pero confío en que su relación y autopercepción serán suficiente para sobrellevarlo.

+ En este momento (2026-01-25) la adaptación al anime va en el episodio 4, como no me pude aguantar la curiosidad por saber como se desarrolla la historia me decidí a complementar con el manga.
+ Me dieron ganas de también "comenzar" un diario.

Je le savais d’avance, en lisant un titre de la collection Life de chez Kana, je n’allais pas être déçu. C’est une collection qui me plaît à chaque fois un peu plus !
Asa a 15 ans et ses parents sont morts dans un accident de voiture. Pourtant, ce qui est surprenant, c’est qu’elle ne sait pas comment réagir. Elle n’est pas triste, ni heureuse, elle ne sait pas réellement ce qu’elle ressent.
Elle se fera accueillir par sa tante Makio qui a 35 ans. Cette dernière est autrice de roman pour adolescents, mais surtout, elle vit comme une recluse, elle n’est pas à l’aise en société. Elle était même en froid avec sa sœur, elle n’avait pas revu cette gamine depuis des années. C’est ainsi que nous allons suivre leur quotidien et leur cohabitation. Deux femmes bien différentes, mais qui pourraient être d’un grand soutien l’une pour l’autre.
C’est un titre tout en douceur. Comme toujours, Kana nous propose dans sa collection Life un manga tranche de vie remplie d’émotions et qui nous pousse à la réflexion. Ici, nous y abordons le thème du deuil chez l’adolescent.
D’ailleurs, les personnages m’ont beaucoup plu. Que ce soit Asa ou même Makio, les deux jeunes femmes sont attachantes. Elles ont leurs caractères, leurs personnalités, elles doivent apprendre à vivre ensemble.
Ce que j’ai adoré ici, c’est que les émotions étaient retranscrites à la perfection. J’avais une bouffée de sentiments qui envahissait mon cœur lors de ma lecture !
En bref, c’est un titre qui nous pousse à nous questionner, nous touche et nous émeut. En tout cas, c’est ce que j’y ai ressentis. Kana nous propose une nouvelle fois, un titre pour la collection Life des plus émouvants !

This was a sweet but melancholy slice-of-life that was occasionally quite touching. The characters as well as the story’s portrayal of grief both felt very real. Nothing extraordinary but still enjoyable.
Side note: I initially started this because I really liked Maiko’s design. :3

"It's not something i'm sharing with anyone", was it?...
It's nice to know that there is someone out there that has had the same thoughts as me. The same feelings, and then the skill to write it so neatly and straightforwardly. It is also the most frustrating thing in the world, as a person with a malfunctioning mouth, but maybe that's jealousy on part of the characters, that they could find how to say it and I could not. And the embarrassment that comes from realising that something is precious to you.
Hmmm, how should I say... Diary of a Strange Land makes me wonder if I am more transparent of a person than I thought.

Asa's parents have just died in a car crash. Her maternal aunt Mikio is struggling to feel sad over the loss of a sister who always made her feel less-than. She has no intention of getting involved with Asa until she really LOOKS at the fifteen-year-old and sees someone who is struggling just as much as she is. On impulse she offers Asa a home with her, but how can someone as emotionally closed off as Mikio raise a grieving child? That's the emotional thrust of this volume, and it's a very different approach to a story about grief than we typically see. It's well done and I'm now positive that Tomoko Yamashita is one of the most versatile mangaka working.

Genre yang gwej banget soalnya tentang slice of life anak yang ditinggal orang tuanya kecelakaan dan akhirnya tinggal bersama tantenya. Bahasa inggrisnya berat amat jadi kadang aku skip wkwkwk. Ntar kalau ada mood mau baca lagi. Can't wait to watch the movie and the anime!

Stumbled across this series randomly and am thoroughly enjoying both the art and the writing, as well as just the fact that it's a series about an aunt and a niece--two women and their relationship, driving the plot!

Si os gusta el slice of life entonces os recomiendo que dejéis de leer mi reseña y vayáis directamente al manga (desgraciadamente no ha salido en España). Y si eso no os ha llamado la atención, dejad que lo intente con mis palabras
Para empezar, el manga trata de una chica, Asa-chan, que se ha quedado huérfana tras un accidente de coche. A partir de ahora, tendrá que vivir con su tía; una escritora de 35 años soltera, introvertida y con las habilidades sociales de un palo. Aunque son familia, en realidad, son dos completas desconocidas. Makio, la tía de Asa, odiaba a la madre de la chica y, durante todo este tiempo, perdieron el contacto por completo.
| Just what exactly can you give a person traveling through a desert? No matter what sort of water, or shade, or clothing, or words, or gaze, just what help can it be to someone walking through a desert alone? To someone who lives their life carrying the desert?
¿Qué pasará cuando ahora sus mundos choquen tras la desgracia? ¿Podrán una adolescente y una mujer aprender a convivir juntas? El manga te lanza directamente en esta situación tan trágica y poco a poco te va enseñando como estas dos personas se hacen un hueco en la vida de la una y la otra, como pasan de orbitar, temerosas de chocar, a compartir la arena del mismo desierto en la que su soledad se encuentran.
El manga habla de la pérdida, de la soledad, de los sentimientos de cada uno, del amor, del arte, de ser el yo que quieres ser. Un manga de personajes, de descubrimiento. Un manga que, de seguro, no os dejará indiferentes.

Not one of those melodramatic slops with awful flat characters. Here, they feel sincerely humane, genuine with their respective deep-seated emotions. Imperfect in their own ways, though not without their own individual strengths.
Main characters, Makio and Asa, both have their fair share of difficulties in life but neither this Aunt-Niece pair just a couple of passively stunted victims of their past nor they deus-ex machina their ways to process their grievances and overcome their struggles but through organic n lively developments which gradually bring out meaningful changes in their lives.
Yes, there are moments of introspection. Yes, there are moments of mutual n honest communication. Yes, there are pauses to stop n breath for its natural progression. Yes, there are conflicts but they aren't contrived for the sake of some cheap drama. And further yes, for here, every form of payoff feels honestly earned, creating a balanced sense of realism.
Most of them are all very well written charas. Though, personally Makio does stand out the most for me, such a beautifully nuanced adult character from the Josei Spectrum.
Do give it a try. It might become a genuinely refreshing experience for you. For I believe, the premise sincerely fulfils its promises this time.

Ikoku Nikki trata sobre Asa, una adolescente que acaba de quedarse huérfana tras morir sus padres en un accidente de tráfico. La hermana de su madre, Makio, la adopta.
Ahora Asa tendrá que lidiar con el duelo y con la nueva relación con Makio, quien, a pesar de ser una adulta, se comporta de un modo distinto a sus padres.
Me ha gustado mucho lo pausado y reflexivo que es este manga, sus personajes son complejos y tridimensionales. Es muy fácil empatizar, especialmente con Asa y Makio, dos excelentes protagonistas y muy alejadas del prototipo de personaje femenino típico que encuentras en el manga.
El dibujo es limpio, con una línea fina y suelta. Tiene un estilo de dibujo algo serio, adulto, creo que pega muy bien con el tono de la obra. Me gusta mucho como dibuja a las mujeres (Makio, especialmente) y como usa el espacio negativo para resaltar los sentimientos de los personajes.

One of the best manga I've ever had the chance to read. I'll call it creme de la creme of josei/slice of life genre. It's been over a month I've read it and yet to this day I think about all the characters. The beautiful and tender exploration of grief, loneliness, love, familiar love, sisterhood, motherhood and friendship. The warmth that it radiates and the messages that it lays down with excellent art work. I cannot recommend it enough. It is also soo inclusive. I love that it also has a sapphic couple and aro elements. I'll prize and praise this manga at any given day. Tomoko Yamashita never fails to amaze me with her range.

Una noia de 15 anys perd els pares en un accident de trànsit i se'n va a viure a casa de la seva tieta, amb qui no tenia pràcticament cap relació perquè odiava la seva germana (mare de la protagonista). En aquest primer volum tenim un tastet de com són els inicis d'aquesta convivència tan peculiar i com gestionen un dol sobtat. Dones independents, que els costa mostrar-se vulnerables, demanar ajuda, que no volen ser una càrrega, però que de mica en mica van confiant l'una en l'altra ♥ No em solen agradar les històries tan assossegades amb poca acció i centrades en la psicologia dels personatges, però aquesta em té força intrigada.

I personally really like that like, and I think it’s such a beautiful and truthful way to describe how some people deal with loneliness or how they take comfort in it.
I’m really immersed in this story, probably because, from the few chapters I’ve read, I relate a lot to Makio’s character. She brings me a lot of comfort about my own adult life that doesn’t really feel like one because I don’t "feel" much like an adult at all.
I will continue reading this story with a lot of interest!
