An all-new easy-to-read adventure based on the latest season of the hit LEGO Ninjago TV show on Cartoon Network!
There's a new gang in Ninjago City -- the sons of Garmadon, named after Lloyd's dad. These crooks are tough, and they are determined to steal the famous Oni Masks. If they get all three masks, they could become all-powerful.
It's up to Lloyd and the ninja to catch those crooks! Can they protect the masks -- and Lloyd's dad's good name?
This book adapts the first episode of Season 8 "Sons of Garmadon," part 1 of the Oni trilogy, which is the most cinematic and ambitious Ninjago storyline and probably one of the best storylines in animation I've ever seen. (Yes, it's better than Dragon Ball Z.... because it doesn't stretch out every 'final battle' for 40 episodes!)
The ninja learn about the masks, meet the royal family of Ninjago (who knew it even had one?) and of course the Jade Princess Harumi who will become a very important character later on. The book ends right where the episode ends so zero closure. But it's still a good tense 'thriller' that which my kids loved.
(If you can get the short chapter book "School for Crooks," the third story in it shows what happens with Harumi in episode 2, after the end of this book when she disappears from her room and Lloyd goes out into the night to find her).
Okay read. I don't know a ton about the Lego Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu series. I have watched a few episodes, but I'm usually cleaning or crafting at the same time so I don't pay a lot of attention to it. More of just background noise.
This was an okay book. It is a Level 2 book for grades 1 to 3. It is meant for developing readers and uses new vocabulary and longer sentence length.
While the story is interesting, it's not a full story. Instead it is just an introduction to the Mystery of the Masks plotline. It gives the basic set up of the plot then ends very abruptly.
Pictures were okay. They have the telltale blurry quality of screenshots taken directly from the show.
The book is set up in chapters, each a few pages long, which helps to break up the text.
Overall, it was okay, but there wasn't really any action, just all set up.
We went to the library yesterday to sign up for the summer reading program and S picked out an entire stack of these easy reader comic books, and nothing else. He is obsessed with these things right now. This one is actually NOT a particularly easy reader. It's strange because the text is big as if it should be an easy reader, but as far as sentence structure and word choice goes, this is currently far too challenging for my kindergartener to handle. So I read it aloud to him. These types of books are never my favorite, but he was pleased with it.
First, you need to know who these characters are, as this starts in the "middle" of their characteristics and what these people (Lego) can do. I did not realize that this was #17. Plus, there is a twist ending where there is an opening ending. However, if your kid is into Lego or Ninjago it could be a fun addition to their collection and help to get them to read.
