Hiromu Arakawa (author: 荒川弘) is a Japanese manga artist, best known for Fullmetal Alchemist (鋼の錬金術師 Hagane no renkinjutsushi). Her real name is Hiromi Arakawa
Arakawa was born and raised on a dairy farm in Hokkaidō. She thought of being a manga artist since she was little. After graduating high school, she took oil painting classes while working on her family's farm. During that time, she also created dōjinshi manga with her friends and drew yonkoma for a magazine. After eight years she moved to Tōkyō and started out as assistant writer for Hiroyuki Etō. Her debut as manga artist is in 1999 with STRAY DOG. In 2001 she started working on her famous and award winning series Fullmetal Alchemist, that soon gets a successful anime adaptation. Other works include Silver Spoon (銀の匙 Silver Spoon, Gin no saji Silver Spoon).
Arslan’s gang had to split up on the way to Peshawar. Narsus is still using clever tactics to stall Silver Mask, who continues the hunt for Arslan’s head. Silver Mask showed compassion for a blind girl, but continues on his path of self-loathing. The snake clan is able to partially teleport and they are slicing up villages, but still no match for Narsus who burned the snake villain alive and saved a Zot bandit. We need their cute fan art between battle scenes. A Lusitanian bishop was murdered in a scandal. The volume closes up with arrival at the Magic Mountain, supposed home of the legendary snake clan that has been committing disembodied-hand murders.
With Arslan's loyal retainers split into various factions each group finds new allies and/or troubles as we discover the Zot Clan, a tough to finish warrior swearing revenge, and trouble begins to bubble over in the Lusitanian capital as Silver Mask finds himself finding his own allies as he finds himself bound to both friends and foes alike.
Thinking back on Hiromu Arakawa's work on Fullmetal Alchemist some people might think of the series as a series safe for kids but there was some seriously dark stuff in there and in this series war has come to this world as well though what we lack in alchemical replacements we get skill with weapons and tacticians mixed with a variety of lords that either show slivers of kindness in a potentially dark world as others share in the darkness as they seek their own interests. However even with the darkness ever present in the story I still get caught off guard when a brutal strike such as an arrow in the face or someone being cleaved in two before collapsing to the ground. :)
I'm really enjoying this series, which I think is in part due to it being written and drawn by the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist (which I shamelessly love to bits!). This volume is just as good as the previous ones and I'm really looking forward to reading the rest!
A manga series that continues to impress and entertain. There were some scenes/details in this volume that were not in the anime (as far as I remember ;-) ), I appreciated it very much.
I love the characters, it's nice to know that there are still many volumes left for me to enjoy...
I am very behind on Arslan - probably need to read beyond the end of the anime to decide how good it is. For now, I love the semi-historical setting (had me reaching for google maps at one point - I assume "Maryam" is "Mary" which ONE DAY I AM GOING TO) and Arakawa-sensei's art is always very soothing.
While infighting fractures the Lusitanians, The Silver Mask begins to consolidate his support. Arslan’s party has been separated throughout eastern Pars as they make their way to the hopeful safety of Peshawar Citadel. Will they all survive the trip? Lots of horse violence to start this one. And a poor, poor falcon. Illustrated people violence... aye oh kay... animal harm... no bueno! Humans are weird aren’t we? This is probably my favorite volume so far. The stakes have never been higher. Even Daryun had a tough fight—the rematch, not. so. much. Narsus finds a fiancé, or she finds him! Always fantastic art. Tremendous action scenes, but still too many text bubbles. Guiscard always has a lot of thought bubbles around his panels. The mountain prison of the Snake King Zahhāk looms large over Arslan’s future.
The story is kind of starting to drag since they split up. We are focussed on what is going on in Hirmiz's camp. They are trying to humanize him, giving him a long lost love that was probably killed, but keep in mind he murdered some women for no reason other than she was a fake Queen and they were with her.
You want to root for him, but he also cast his lot in with the Lusitanians that are murdering, raping, and destroying everything.
I really enjoy this series. I am a big believer in supporting the authors. That is another reason I have been buying the series. I like how the characters in this series seem real.
