Rate this book
Connie August, a Christian combat medic, one who had experienced healings and miracles on the battlefield similar to those in scripture, wasn’t looking to make waves back home now that she was retired from the service. She opened Connie’s Pizza and settled into her chosen community, wanting to be herself, content to lead a small group of paramedics, doctors, nurses and chaplains who were studying the scriptures and sharing their experiences from across the Chicago area. Ryan Cooper, CEO of a religious-affiliated private hospital, had seen too many of Chicago’s children die from gun violence, young mothers die from cancer, and random illness take both the young and old. He wanted the vibrancy of God’s healing to be a predictable experience again. A friend introduced them at a party. He wanted to understand what she’d experienced. She wanted him to give a chaplain friend a job when he retired from the service. They struck a deal that would change both their lives and soon begin to reverberate across Chicago. This is Ryan’s story, Connie’s, but mostly it’s God’s story, a God who is still amazing in his goodness.[back of book]

I have been a fan of Dee Henderson for years. Her stories have captivated me while giving me a wholesome look at what it means to be a Christian. I have been able to loan and recommend her books to friends many times over. Her books have encouraged my Christian friends with ideas on how to talk about Jesus with family and friends. My non-Christian friends have also enjoyed her books and come away with comments like "I am learning more about what it means to be a Christian." Sadly, I cannot recommend this book to anyone for several reasons. It appears to not have had the same editing process as her other books. It does not have a story of any real length. It is mostly a series of scripture quotes that are taken out of context to support a conclusion that is not at the heart of Christianity. According to her website, Dee Henderson is writing a "non-fiction" book about healing. "An Unfinished Death" seems to contain the research for that book, with a few pages thrown in to try to turn it into a story. The book's characters are undeveloped and seem to be in the story for the sole purpose of quoting scripture. "An Unfinished Death" would not only bore my non-Christian friends, but it would confuse them as well. The only reason I completed this book is in hopes that the author would find a logical reason for its content and format. In my opinion, she did not. I will continue to re-read and share Dee Henderson's other books, but will not keep this one on my shelf as its only use would be to illustrate how badly one can convey an idea. Such a disappointment!

On her website, Dee Henderson says that this book is very different than her other books, and she is very correct in saying that. It has not the suspense nor the romance that is typical of her books and reads more like an intense Bible study on the topic of healing. Nevertheless, it was thought provoking and has left me still thinking about it after finishing.

An Unfinished Deathby Dee Henderson is quite different from her other books. Although classed as a novel it reads more like a Bible study. I took my time reading and absorbing this book. The premise is that we as Christians should be seeing the same miracles in our lives that first century Christians did. We should be raising people from the dead and healing the sick through the powerful name of Jesus Christ. I am not sure on my part if it is a lack of faith or what. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever, Hebrews 13. I do think it is a book that should be read with a prayerful heart. So grab a pot of tea and plan to spend a bit of time absorbing this book.

Until the very end I struggled how to rate this book. According to my current understanding of the Bible I'm not sure about a few topics if they are really that way. I plan to study on those and should I come to the conclusion they are correct I'll raise my current rating of three stars to four.
The other huge issue for me were the many typos/incorrect/missing or unnecessary words/expressions and some formatting issues which lead to a lower rating by a star as well. Should the author provide and reviewed copy (via Amazon) at any point in the future I'll change my rating accordingly.

This was a very intense book a blend of a fictional teaching experience and bible study showing how much the author cares about this topic. I was blown away by the number of used Bible verses (according to the companion book: Healing Is By Grace Alone more than 550 direct quotates and references) and will use those as a starting point for my personal Bible study. Apart from a few points I'm convinced about its truth and still have the hope I'll be able to confirm those I'm doubtfull about with time and additional Bible study.
The fictionalized teaching experience is a main 'vehicle' for the Bible study and the reason I consider this more of a non-fiction than ficiton. We don't learn very much about the characters and there's not much actual character development (apart from spiritual development of the male main character) or a real plot (basically we only get to listen on their meetings). There are appearances of characters from the author's novels and I liked the bits of updates on their lives. For those interested you'll find a list of characters (and their books) I identified behind spoiler tags at the end.

Despite the many critical voices about the author's change of style and 'genre' I still enjoy her books and find them even more valuable to her original romantic suspense novels as I learn much about different topics (here healing) and am nudged to study on this topic myself more strongly than before (to confirm or refute the content). I plan to add to this review the results when I'm finished though it will take some time as I want to study thoroughly.

Now I'm looking even more forward to the author's non-fiction works and hope they are as helpful as this one.

After reading the reviews I won't read this book. Many readers are warning that it's full of prosperity doctrine. So please be aware that this book is not like her other books. She takes a lot of scriptures out of context and twists them to support the prosperity gospel. Check out the reviews on Amazon.

At the moment I’m so enraged by this book that I’m not to be trusted with my input. But feel free to read the other reviews. It was terrible.

If you agree with the author's conclusions regarding healing and resurrection you will love this book. If you are looking for romance, mystery, and action, then you will be disappointed. I don't agree with the author's conclusions and read the book only because my wife asked me to so I could evaluate the scriptural argument made. The book is a presentation of the case for present-day resurrection that attempts to make that case in the form of the story. Neither the case made nor the story worked for me. There was no mystery where the story was going to end up.

My fear regarding this book is that it conveys to unbelievers a way of approaching scripture that I find quite dangerous. The author is not the only one who uses this approach. It is quite common and seems to assume that if something is stated very directly and repeated often it must be true, especially if it appears to be supported by a snippet of scripture.

I cannot recommend this book. Instead, I would recommend taking the time to read the entire New Testament. I think if you do that you'll come to a different conclusion.

Dee Henderson is my favorite writer of all time. I am an avid reader and have read the everything she has written and the Mallory series three times. I believe this is the most comprehensive book I've ever read and I will read it many times. She brought to the front what the truths that Satan has hidden from modern day Christians. It wasn't her normal mystery novel, but I found she wrote about the truest mystery of all. I have recommended this book to many Christian Leaders and Minister friends with the hope that these truths will be manifested in their ministries. It is refreshing that their is still someone brave enough to write their beliefs. She did warn ahead that this was not her typical novel so everyone had the opportunity to not read it and you don't have to believe her doctrine. No matter what you believe I have read this with an open mind and heart and I have had a renewal of my faith. I am 79 yrs. old and served God most of my life, but had gotten
comfortable but the things she brought out made healing and resurrection clearer. I've seen healings but am now believing for whatever God wants to do. Thank you for writing from your heart.

Loved this book! Don’t read it if you are looking for the mysteries/suspense stories that you typically read a Dee Henderson book for. This book is written as fiction, but it contains a lot of Bible verses and scripture references. It deals with the Holy Spirit, and the subject of healing and restoring the dead back to life. If you are a strong Christian and believe in the literal interpretation of scripture, you would like this book. If you want a light read, don’t read. This book deal with a heavy subject. It makes you think and question, but leaves you with a sense of hope and expectation.

I did NOT like this book!! I think it's totally unrealistic, and, if Ms. Henderson is right, then everyone that has died after people prayed for them were lost or didn't have faith. I don't believe that!! This book has ruined her previous books for me, as she had some of the same characters in this book. I've talked with others about this book, and they feel as I do, that the topics here are not handled Biblically. Yes, I know she gives passages; however, I feel they are taken out of context, and manipulated to prove her point, probably by the very "ministers" she mentions in the back of the book. I do not believe the way she does, and wish I had never read this book. This was a total turnoff for me, and I really enjoyed her previous books. This was a waste of time and money. If I had known there was a good return policy with Amazon, I'd have returned this book.

In my mind, this should have been a non fiction book. The “plot” is one person teaching another about healing and raising people from the dead. The one doing the teaching is a former combat medic who has seen miracles on the battlefield and is quietly teaching a few chosen students how to pray for healing and resurrection.

Since I was expecting fiction, I didn’t enjoy reading it. I actually stopped several times and went back to see if maybe more of a plot was going to kick in.

It didn’t.

The dialogue is Connie teaching Ryan. He records her lessons and adds his own notes. So it’s pages and pages of Scriptures on healing.

As a non fiction book, it’s probably excellent. Calling it fiction, it’s a tedious read.

I did not know about the different style this book was written with. It’s certainly not like any of the others which is what I was expecting. I took this with me to read expecting the suspense of her previous books. Alto the last book was pretty predictable and was hoping for another twist in her writing
Dee Henderson is just like one of my favorite authors. I think if I had been in the frame of mind for a scripture reading it would have not taken me by surprise. When my mind gathered what was happening I had to read at a time my head was wrapped around more of a scripture study not a “fiction” book.

I chose this book because I was familiar with this author’s work. I enjoy a good book to escape life’s issues. This book was just what I needed and was at the right time. I have been battling with rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia for years. I’ve spent the last three days reading and rereading sections. I searched my Bible and took it to the Lord for confirmation. The fictional format she used for this allowed the characters to ask the questions I would have asked if it were a bible study. I have found a deeper relationship with my Lord. Did I get my healing? Well don’t you know, I got my healing at the cross!

This book was an eye opener. It’s not like the other Dee Henderson’s that I have read. To be honest it really, helped my Christianity. I feel like it was a labor of love on Dee’s part. I spent as much time reading this book as I did confirming what she was saying with the scriptures she quoted in the book. It literally changed my view on so many things. It’s fiction and the story is interesting but at the same time there was so much to learn that I have since applied in my life.

I would recommend that every believer reads this book at least once. I will be reading again in the near future. God bless You, Dee!

An extremist and unrealistic fantasy

I bought a book expecting a story but instead got a discourse on the extremes of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, I will carefully vet any future books before purchasing, pulling verse's out of context, changing versions when the version used appears to back up the misguided theology. She uses 120 was the age of what God wants us to live in direct contradiction to the Word which says 3 score and ten or 70 years, while I enjoy her stories these are nothing like her past works and I would gladly have done without wasting my time on them .

Author Dee Henderson shares the fictional story of Christian combat medic Connie August who retired from the military to open a pizza restaurant in Chicago. The main focus of the book is faith-based healing and bringing the dead back to life in a prosperity gospel kind of way. Regardless of your belief in these miracles, Connie shares important spiritual truths in a teaching mode with Mercy Hospital CEO Ryan Cooper. There are numerous biblical verses to substantiate Connie's teaching.

An Unfinished Death, a look at real life in Christ

This book is easy reading, while being an excellent teacher. Anyone and everyone who reveres Jesus as Lord and Savior should read this novel, and then read it again. There is an amazing, practical application here for living the Spirit-filled life day by day and being prepared for whatever situation might cross your path, being naturally supernatural and supernaturally natural.

As much as I enjoy Dee's fiction, this was preaching with a little bit of story around it. I appreciate that she felt led to write this and it seems clear that she has some strong feelings on the subject. I didn't always agree with her interpretation, and after a while I just had to set it down and walk away.

Awesome book!

It took two days for me to read this book and it held my interest even when I put it down for a friend's visit. It will be on my mind for days to come. I learned so much but I am sure I will read some of it again. I have read most of the books by this author and all were great but this is a little different. I am sure I will not forget it.

Worst book of the year, for sure. There is no real story in the book. The alleged plot consumes probably about 20 pages in the book. What the book is however is an instructional manual on faith healing which is tantamout to reading a 300 plus page sermon practically straight out of the mouth of Kenneth Copeland or some other name it and claim prosperity gospel preacher

Insightful!

Amazing what God can teach you through fiction when you want to learn. Love the tie in of previous stories and characters.

Read this book with a willingness to learn and apply God’s truth. I am, and the results are astounding!

Dee Henderson has been my favorite author for a long time. This book just launched her to a whole new level.

Thanks Dee!

I thoroughly enjoy all Dee Henderson’s books, reading them several times through the years. She incorporates theology teaching in all of them. This one, however, had more than normal. She has given me a lot to think about.

Know God's grace

An Unfinished Death is just that. We don't have to accept death. this little book explains why in such a way that it cannot be refuted. It is clearly Truth all the way. Any minister or Christian that wants to be healed and heal others needs to read this book.

Absolutely fascinating

I have felt for a long time that we Christians have not been living as the Bible says we should. We are healed. However,we still get sick or are not as healthy as we should be. This book opened my eyes and mind. I am sure it will yours, too.
