The Least of 99 Evils: A Dystopian Thriller

Rate this book
You might wake up one morning to find you’ve been elected President of the New States of America. There are 99 political parties who would see you dead. Run.

Ever since presidential elections have been replaced with an objective lottery system, things have gotten out of hand. The Servicemen-- a militaristic police force-- attempts to keep order while political groups devolved into violent street gangs as they vie to control--or murder--the next elected official.

It was under the charge of the first new president, Clyde O'Brien, that the East and West coasts of America were nuked to oblivion and a wall encircling the interior states was erected. O'Brien will be your Virgil through this American hellscape of anarchists bent on dismantling the system, corporately owned military groups, cannibalistic hippies, and religious fanatics fond of human sacrifice.

This is a dystopian thriller with flourishes of horror and biting satire in the tradition of a post-world America. The humor keeps pace with the breakneck speed of the plot, and before you see it coming, you'll come to understand that the only rule that applies in this new frontier is survival.

Hail to the chief.

Pierre Manchot is the nom de plume of some literary punk residing in and around Portland, OR.

Dude generally writes dystopian thrillers, noir, and YA post-apocalyptic. Nearly everything is steeped in humor and a distinctive style that's purely his own.

Not actually French. Je suis désolé.

Didn't really know what I was getting into when I started this novel, but boy was I glad I did.

Mr. Manchot's literary genius knows no bounds as this dystopian fiction expertly plays on the polarization of our current political climate. Set in an alternate USA, we find our fellow Americans factioned off into hundreds of political parties (or gangs, judging by their interactions) following nuclear decimation of the coasts. A wall is built around the fly over states and the scramble to get a foothold in this new landscape sets the scene for this brilliant and hilarious novel.

10/10 would recommend to everyone.

Side note: this book was really well edited!

Honestly I think this is Pierre's masterpiece. He paints a world driven by randomized algorithmic terror as embodied by the protagonist and his reluctance to be President. A rambling excursion through the underbelly of America. Highly recommend!

Funny and well written with interesting characters. Nihilistic, dark in a cavalier way, and kind of savage, but very entertaining. Recommended!
(I did find a few typos though)
