In my very humble opinion, this is even better than the first, and that is saying something. It is non-stop action from the outset, full of adventure and excitement that would have to make any child longing to find amazing adventures of their own. Humphrey and Pickering again provide the slapstick scenes of light relief in what is otherwise a quite dark story on the quiet. Absolutely wonderful and I can't wait to read the final instalment.

What a cracking sequel to a brilliant first novel. The pace is storming. It’s scary, intelligent, unputdownable. Best villain in years. And the sweetest, most adorable rhinoceros beetle you’ll ever ever meet ❤️❤️😘

Insanely fast. The story motors on with the power of the beetles at its heart. I cannot wait for the third and final instalment of this excellent trilogy.

I devoured this second installment. There are many things that I enjoy about Leonard's writing but it's the absolutely precise balance of plot that I find incredible. She seems to see these stories in a filmic quality and it's clear that her theatre work not only lends a sense of the dramatic and well as perfect pacing, but character, timing, knowing when to move from one scene to the next, the role of dialogue and action - she just had a real masterly of the lot. This time, I loved the growing involvement of adults in the book and there was a strong theme throughout of children and adults being treated as equals. Brilliant stuff: about to jump into the final book in the trilogy.

Even better than Beetle Boy
I never thought I would see the day that I'm concerned about the wellbeing of a group of beetles!
Looking forward to the Battle of the Beetles

Another belter of a story. Picked up straight away from where Beetle Boy left off. Loved it and will be recommending to our District Bookworms!

Absolutely beetling brilliant. Wasn't sure it could hit the heights of Beetle Boy but it does and then some: a rip-roaring adventure exploding from every page. Tomorrow calls for a trip to the Army Surplus stores to pick up my camo bag - I need to be ready for the Amazon. The Battle of the Beetles can't come soon enough.

M.G Leonard’s writing is proving, once again, to be utterly engrossing- a complete whirlwind of action and excitement. Tightly knitted and pacey, Leonard transports you back into the world of beetles with great ease, creating a gripping story that just cannot be put down. Perhaps even better than its predecessor, Beetle Queen paints the perfect villain and takes the exploits of Lucretia Cutter and the beetles onto the next level. There is just the right level of unpredictability within the plot, extending right until the finale and building an irresistible suspense. Too many questions are left to be answered in the next book!
I am always intrigued by the depiction of adults and parents within children’s literature, and Leonard’s portrayal of key adults is increasingly interesting. Amidst the fun and adventure of all things beetle are some rather sinister themes tied to parents, particularly abandonment and abuse. I am greatful for this- Leonard strikes an excellent balance between some tricky subjects and making an entertaining read, which will certainly intensify and add to the depth of discussion with children. These undertones make this thriller a lot more meaningful for me, and I cannot wait for of the third of this superb trilogy.

M.G Leonard has done it again. Should I be surprised when Beetle Boy alone was so fantastic?

The story is still just as gripping with new plot points explored, after all Lucretia Cutter is still out there! A return of the fun and wonderfully witty writing style from Leonard guarantees this is just as explosive as its predecessor. Every age should be able to enjoy the humour but also the incredible amount of research into the Scientology. I found myself learning new things every chapter.

Old and new characters are in abundance, especially love Moticilla and the return of Pickering and Humphrey despite their chapters seeming slightly redundant, I'm hoping they will have another part to play in the finale. Novak has instantly become more likable this time round and the insane plan that Lucretia plots is fabulously wicked and extravagant, I was terrified during the final chapters.

Over all, a sequel that hits its previous installment out of the ball park. I cannot wait for the final installment, Battle of the Beetles.

Having enjoyed every word of its predecessor, Beetle Boy, and fallen in love with all those beetles introduced in the first book, I worried that the follow-up would disappoint me. I needn't have wasted a moment on worrying about that. As a couple of other reviewers, this one might be even better than the first book. It might seem impossible for villain Lucretia Cutter to get even more despicable, but she does as she finally reveals her plot to take over the world through her control of certain beetles. Friends Darkus, Virginia, and Bertholt continue to fight the good fight against her, even more determined when it seems as though Darkus's scientist father has joined her side. (The emphasis here is on SEEMS since I doubt that anyone believed that for a minute.) As Lucretia prepares to attend a film award show in LA with her daughter Novak, she also launches an attack against many of the beetles who have escaped her grasp. My heart broke as I read the passages describing their fate, but I was also grateful that Baxter, Marvin, and Newton, the youngsters' insect friends, had survived. The author has a firm grasp on her characters and plot, and moves the action forward quickly, setting readers up for a showdown in the Amazon where Lucretia has a biome. While the younger characters are just as delightful and unique here as they were before, it was interesting to see some of the older ones such as Darkus's Uncle Max, and Betholt's stage-stuck mother get a little more time on the page as their characters were more fully fleshed out. Readers who are squeamish about beetles and things that crawl or fly may not like this book, but I found that it gave me a whole new appreciation for them. Fifth, sixth, and seventh graders should find this one right up their alley.

Be jokios abejonės patiko!

It seems to have taken my son and I quite a while to get through this second Battle of the Beetles book, not because we weren't enjoying it, but just because I don't seem to have had as much chance as I normally get. This book picks up more or less where book one, Beetle Boy finished. Personally, I didn't quite enjoy this one as much as the first, but it was still good. My eleven-year-old love it though and it was really for him not for me. No doubt we'll be moving onto Battle of the Beetles, before long.

Lucretia Cutter is very beautiful, very elegant and very, very clever. An inventor pushing back the boundaries of science, a designer whose creations fill rooms with jaw-dropping beauty, Ms Cutter demands – and deserves – our admiration.

That she is cold, calculating and full of utterly wicked intent only further serves to seduce readers of Beetle Queen by M. G. Leonard (@MGLnrd) into trying uncover her evil plot – involving beetles, genetic manipulation and haute couture – before it is too late.

The world as we know it is under threat (think back to the grasshoppers in the Banks of Plum Creek to remind yourself of the total devastation tiny critters can cause…) and the only people who could prevent disaster are a trio of young friends, prepared to defy their parents, one of whom may have gone over to the dark side.

This sequel to Beetle Boy, a glorious Roald Dahl/Kafka mash-up, is thrilling and deeply satisfying, with characters – authentic, interesting and bags of fun (even when evil!) – who you yearn to meet in real life driving a plot full of satisfying food for thought about our place in the world and how we treat it.

Dusted all over with an iridescent sparkle of magic that comes from combining cutting-edge science with show-stopping glamour, Beetle Queen combines warmth and charm with the addictive adrenalin of (the threat of) terror and a mystery to solve. Hurrah for the Beetle Boy! BOO HISS (but secretly we love you) for the Beetle Queen! Bring on The Battle of the Beetles and the epic show down that can’t come soon enough in the final part of this intelligent, funny, curiosity-inspiring adventure story surely set to become a classic.

My last read of 2020! I absolutely love the second book in the Beetle Boy trilogy. In this book Darkus, Virginia, Bertolt and their super witty beetles are trying to stop the mean and evil Lucretia Cutter. The story is part detective, exciting, funny and full of adventure. I can’t wait to read the final book and anything else this author writes.

Heerlijk! Wanneer komt deel 3?
