Sette's world takes a turn for the weird when she tries to rouse Duane from his nighttime stupor, and she finds herself learning more about her attack zombie than she ever wanted to. A mad land of monsters awaits, each one hoarding secrets, each one ready to bite.
A book with 12 ratings, almost all of them five out of five stars, is suspicious as hell. If I didn't know better, I'd chalk up the stellar ratings on this relatively obscure webcomic to pleasant trolling or sock puppet accounts.
But I know better.
I've been reading Unsounded on and off for somewhere around five years, unfortunately more "off" than "on." But with the arrival of the successfully Kickstarted third volume on my doorstep, I decided to re-read them all again*. To be blunt, I was astounded that the beautifully illustrated and masterfully written webcomic I had enjoyed was somehow even better.
Pages for the comic are posted three times a week, which is how I had initially read these three chapters. I loved them at the time, but reading them all in succession as one continuous story rather than as chopped bits draws everything together in a way that I hadn't experienced before (and, I'm assuming, is the way they're supposed to be experienced.)
By the third volume, one has presumably read chapters 1-6 already, so I won't go into details in regards to plot/ characters/ etc., but I wanted to share the newfound love I have for the series through a review. It truly, honestly is even better than I remembered, and I'm glad that I have made the time to experience this comic as it was intended (aka, not under the covers on my iPhone at midnight waiting for another page to upload.)
If you have come across this review as a fan of fantasy comics having not begun this series, please do yourself a favor and begin so immediately, but please make time to do so in one sitting.
*The first three volumes, chapters 1-9 are available for purchase in collected volumes. They are also available to read online for free, along with chapters 10-12. 13 will begin in January 2018.
And so the mystery of Duane Adelier is revealed! All while the mysterious machinations of our villains begin to bubble to the surface.
This volume contains Chapter 7, which contains an infamous flashback scene showing Duane Adelier in the last day of his life—and also officially introduces Captain Lemuel Adelier. Brother to Duane Adelier and the love of my life. There is almost as much mystery surrounding this handsome soldier as there is in the main plot. What role, if any, did he play in the assassination of his brother, and the untimely demise of his young niece? Who's to say! You should read this comic to find out.
And then there is Sette and her own family issues. Her crime lord da sent her on this mission, only to find out that he had lied to her. This whole journey had nothing to do with proving herself and collecting her cousin's dues—Duane Adelier himself was the true spoils, and Sette the only one who could lure him West.
But to what end? Who wants the undead rector? And why was he to be delivered alongside the First Silver super-weapon?
Mysteries abound! You should read Unsounded to find out :)
Still one of the greatest stories I've ever read. It's so rare and precious to find a great storyteller who's also such a skilled artist. These books are a gem.
Another installment of the excellent Unsounded webcomic in book form. As always, Ashley Cope provides some of the best art around, and a great story. Highly recommended.
