Eric Beckman, a mind-reading private investigator, is spending Christmas in snowy Vermont with his wife and daughter. He needs a break from solving cases, but the townspeople convince him to look into the village mystery: Every holiday season, someone switches the baby Jesus with one of the other figures in the town’s nativity scene.
With the help of his ten-year-old daughter, also a mind reader, he soon learns that some of the residents of the small town are not who—or even what—they seem to be. There’s something supernatural going on in Newburn, Vermont.
His investigation causes an escalation of strange happenings, and soon, swapped manger figures are the least of the town’s worries. If Beckman can’t adjust his view of the world—force himself to believe in things he never thought possible—the Christmas vacation could turn out to be his family’s last.
A Mind Reader’s Christmas may be read as a standalone book or as Book Four in the Eric Beckman series.
Al Macy writes because he has stories to tell. In school he was the class clown and always the first volunteer for show and tell. His teachers would say “Al has a lot of imagination.” Then they'd roll their eyes.
But he put his storytelling on the back burner until he retired and wrote a blog about his efforts to improve his piano sight-reading. That's when his love of storytelling burbled up to the surface, along with quirky words like “burble.”
He had even more fun writing his second book, Drive, Ride, Repeat, but was bummed by non-fiction's need to stick to “the truth” (yucko). From then on it was fiction all the way, with a good dose of his science background burbling to the surface.
Macy's top priority is compelling storylines with satisfying plot twists, but he never neglects character development. No, wait … his top priority is quirkiness, then compelling storylines, then character development. No, wait …
A Mind Reader's Christmas: An Eric Beckman Mystery by Al Macy is a cozy type supernatural ghost story. Every year at Christmas, the Nativity Jesus in the manger is switched with a Nativity animal in the town that Eric and his family are visiting this year. They decide they want to find out who is doing it. They film it and it happens so fast that it isn't a person, and they catch a spirit on film. The mystery is on. Oh, and Eric and his daughter can read minds and talk to each other with their minds too! Eric's daughter also has a few other tricks up her sleeve!!! Fun and great story! LOVED it!
Thematic reading can sometimes be tricky. I needed some Christmas stories and all my Kindle had was Al Macy. Which is usually fairly entertaining, unless he takes it too far. The man tends to tread the fine line between silly and stupid and lately has been veering toward the latter. But this was actually ok, mostly just silly, but perfectly readable and pleasantly Christmasy. Eric Beckman, Macy’s mind reader, takes a December long vacation in the snow country, but thoughts are never quiet and neither are ghosts, so he manages to get involved in solving a local (Christmas themed, of course) mystery. So much so that even Peggy, his over the top transvestite assistant, whom Macy gets entirely too much mileage out of when it comes to cheap quips, has to come and help, glamorously decked out and weather inappropriate gear, of course. So yeah, it’s that sort of thing, humorous, albeit in a very, very low brow fashion. But for a quick Christmas read it was just about decent enough. Mindless light entertainment. Plus it was a freebie.
I'm glad I came across Al Macy's work. So far, this has been the very best of the Eric Beckman series that I've read.
Al's humour is twisted and quirky as mine. Blending it with the ability to weave multiple intersting subplots -- glimpses into Eric and Cosmina's lineage, three mysteries (maybe four including the one mentioned in the book's description), more backstory on Viviana's heritage and his investigative assistant Peggy's history -- Al has created an awesome read. Not only are the characters deeper than a puddle, but they possess a chemistry that kept me rapt and entertained throughout the book.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I loved this book about a mystery that needed solving - during a holiday vacation. I've become quite the Al Macy fan!
A Mind Reader's Christmas: An Eric Beckman Mystery by Al Macy
The Goodreads summary of this book indicated it could be read as a standalone or as book of the Eric Beckman mysteries. I read it as a standalone as part of my December Christmas themed reading. I enjoyed this book, if for no other reason, it was a proper Christmas ghost story.
The novel is set in approximately 2032 (that gleaned from a passage at approximately 101 that mentions that the main character did something 7 years ago, in 2025). That's not too far in the future. There is mention of some advanced technology, mainly the Liforac drug (the wonder drug of the century -- at 101) which halted aging. You had to be at least 25 to take it, but you could take it at any age after that. The main character had taken it at age 45 (in 2025), making his chronological age 52 at the time of the story. It was interesting to see that type of advanced technology mentioned (and it is mentioned often in the story) along side of references by the main character to his continued use of Bisquick.
This book was very well proofed and edited. I only found one place where I couldn't reconcile the meaning from the context. I looked the author up to see if perhaps he was from a non-English country, which might explain the difference in idioms, but he seems to be 100% All-American. Here's the passage, which occurs at about 538 on my Kindle: "While I could turn down the gain and block the thoughts of others, it was tiring." I'm not sure what "gain" means in that sentence, but it didn't stop me for too long, and the second half of the sentence was more important to the storyline, so as it was early in the novel it wasn't really a problem for me.
Eric Beckman, his wife, Viviana, and their 10-year old daughter, Cosmina, have rented an old house in Newburn, Vermont for the holidays. Both Eric and Cosmina are mind readers, and although she is not one, Viviana is aware of both of their abilities. Beckman's business, Eric Beckman Investigations, has made him well-known to the public, so it isn't surprising when he is asked to help solve the town's mystery. It seems that for many years, someone or something is switching the baby Jesus in the local church's outdoor nativity for one of the other figures, usually an animal, in the display. The town has tried posting guards and filming through the night, but always seem to miss the exchange, which occurs in the blink of an eye. The investigation leads Beckman and his family to an old wrong that needs to be righted and to a startling discovery involving the powers that are developing in his daughter. Along the way they meet with people and with former people, all who form an intricate puzzle for Beckman's family, and his assistant, Peggy, to solve.
I have one other Eric Beckman novel on my Kindle, "Yesterday's Thief." I'm looking forward to reading that in 2018. Perhaps I've found a new series to follow.
Available Kindle Unlimited although I seemed to have gotten the first 2 through library thing as I did the other book, Yesterday's Thief {head's up that it was freebie day I guess}. Liked the book even better than the previous one, although am a huge fan of the other type of story, but this one...maybe now that I knew of the characters better maybe, seemed to flow better and not cause me as much confusion as before. When I get time, although not sure just when that might be, will re-read both stories and see if that makes a difference, knowing the characters and all better than before. Haven't so far, but saw the 2 new ones up and well, priorities....

The fascinating and otherworldly narrative keeps the readers captivated, has characters that are totally charming and captivating and incidents that keep the reader glued to the book until the end is reached make this book one of its kind reading experience!
This reader thanks the author for this tremendously enjoyable reading experience!!
This was a light reading book, small in size but big in scope. Macy a first time author for me was a surprise. I enjoyed the premise of a family of mind readers and the humor of getting into each other's heads. The story was carefully planned even with the twists of plots regarding the mystery of the manger thief/ prankster and then the other planes or realms of existence/dreams or not that were creative and innovative. Partway through this book l was certain it would devolve into something horrific like many of the ghost movies screaming in our faces and couldn't finish it! But when the horrors do come they are handled with humor and even doubt in the characters' part which makes the reader lose some of the building tension and enjoy the scary ride. Well-written, blithe, simple and clean, I really liked the story and the characters. The fantastic phantoms are unusual and it is all a great ghost story as well as a testament to the love of a close-knit family who persevere through this bizarre advent adventure. I'll be interested in reading more of Macy's work.
Cast in the remote town in the mountains of Vermont, this book is about David Beckman and his family’s Christmas holiday vacation. Like every other Beckman novel, there is a mystery to be solved in this town. Beckman uses his psychic skills to solve the mystery, but not before puzzling twists and turns mislead the reader. Wondering what’s happens next in this novel is what keeps the reader engaged.
Beckman‘s daughter is now a pre-teen and her psychic abilities are developing. One of those psychic powers is frightening to Beckman as it represents an otherworldly link that he does not possess. A friendly mysterious character from the town’s past helps guide Beckman in dealing with the town’s mystery and with his daughter’s abilities.
I have been enjoying this series by Al Macy and look forward to reading more David Beckman books.
Surprisingly good. I expected to have issues once I realized this was part of a series, and not the beginning. But it seemed to suit the mood I was in, so I started reading. Part mystery, part ghost story, part cozy family Christmas story, its premises were clear and story line compelling. The child while slightly mature for 10, seemed realistic and the futuristic touches believable enough not to inhibit the story.
And it was such a refreshing change to get a free Kindle book without a ton of noticeable grammar or punctuation errors!
I frequently pick up freebies from fkb.me, which is where I found this. I'm so far behind in reading that I'm not certain I'll pick up the rest in the series, but I will keep an eye on and follow the author. His storytelling style is fresh and worthy of watching.
What fun to read a Christmas story with a significant twist! You could put this little family in a snow globe --with their Vermont holiday rental in the background..and the town nativity scene -- except, wait...is that a cow in the manger? And what will Eric's psychic crime solving partner, transsexual Peggy WEAR.... Throwing the family into the near future -- 2025ish -- where not aging is as simple as taking medicine is a great twist, and I loved Eric's immigrant wife and her charming accent -- heard loud and clear in the book. And we haven't even touched on the precocious, mind-reading-like-her-daddy Cosomine -- what a great kid, what a child rearing challenge --
This is a great piece of fiction and a great conversation starter in your mind, if you let it -- what about a mind reading kid who instantly know's when a parent is wavering--OUCH....
Eric Beckman, a mind reading private investigator was hoping for a quiet Christmas with his wife and daughter in Vermont when they learn of a ghost switching baby Jesus from the nativity scene. His daughter also a mind reader has the ability to hear ghosts. Can they along with his assistant Peggy find out who the ghost is and help him them move on.
I received a copy of this in exchange for an honest review. I'm not usually a big fan of ghost stories but this one sounded intriguing and I love a Christmas story. This was a good read though. I enjoyed the story and the mystery was clever.
I like Eric and loved his relationship with his daughter. Their bond is very well written and sweet. This was a lovely short read and a good story.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
Eric Beckman is an investigator with a talent for reading minds and along with his wife, daughter and cross-dressing assistant gets pulled into a perplexing mystery whilst on holiday at christmas.
The figures in the town nativity scene keep being rearranged and nobody knows why or by who so Eric is asked to investigate.
A quirky tale of ghosts and supernatural beings makes this not your conventional mystery and the cast of characters keeps it interesting and the story progresses at an easy t oread rate.
The story has been well thought out and providing you are able to suspend your disbelief in all things spooky then it makes for a very interesting read
I have recieved the digital version of this book in return of an honest review. I have started reading it and will update as i keep reading. UPDATE 27th nov 2017: just finished chapter 1. Good intro. Interesting characters. Nicely told story so far. Smells like a mystery is about to present itself. Lets see what happens. UPDATE 30TH NOV 2017;I just finished reading this book. I started reading it with next to no expectation. As I read on, this book gripped me. I read it as often as I could and could not put it down at all last night.the author has done an amazing job with the etory, characters and the writing. really good book.
A unique paranormal mystery set at Christmas. Like some other reviewers, I was surprised to find how much I enjoyed this. Other than the fact that it took place at Christmas and had a mystery surrounding a nativity scene, it wasn't really about Christmas, and the main character apparently doesn't even believe in God or the actual Christmas story. That said, I thought the story was really interesting and drew me in. I liked the main characters, especially the 10 year old daughter. Since I enjoy paranormal stories (clean ones), that aspect of it didn't bother me. I thought the writing was good and well-edited. I'm interested in reading the other books in the series.
A Mind Reader's Christmas: An Eric Beckman Mysteryby Al Macy was an interesting read to say the least. it wasn't anything like what I was expecting, merging the science fiction, horror, and fantasy genres. It was more of a horror/ghost story than anything else but parented in such a way that it tied right in with Christmas with the troubled spirit switching the baby Jesus in a Nativity display with one of the animals. The plot moved forward at a decent clip and kept me wondering what was going to happen next. I enjoyed it but I think we could have done without the cross dresser Peggy. That touch was just a little too much for me.
I’ve enjoyed this series greatly. First, as to editing, BRAVO! I’m a bit OCD and rarely find books and/or series that aren’t rift with mistakes. Not so with Macy’s books. It makes a difference. A big difference. The story line is also great fun. It’s a bit of an adjustment to think in terms of being approximately a decade in the future. It’s not futuristic, just set a few years ahead. The characters are engaging and personable. I’d like to see more of Peggy and her story. Congratulations, Mr. Macy. You’ve got a reader for your continuing work.
Imaginative tale with several improbable characters who embark on a nativity figure-switching mystery which involves an agitated ghost, an old hermit who lives in a secluded wooded cottage, and a black multi-clawed otherworldly monster. Arriving in snowy Vermont at Christmastime is a family of three, a mind-reading private detective and his mind-reading ten year old daughter with their Romanian wife/mother. The exchanges between father and daughter are hilarious, made even more so when the detective’s colorful transvestite assistant joins them to solve the mystery. Far fetched, entertaining story which offers quirky people, metaphysical wonders and a dramatic cinematic ending.
I really really liked this book, I didn't think I would when I started it. Mind reading family, ghosts, Christmas, danger and a special child. Eric ( the Dad), is a investigating a strange problem in a small Vermont town, who keeps moving the baby Jesus from his manger, who is the lady in grey following them, what is going on in the ruins near the family's Christmas rental? I hope there is more from Eric's family .
This book was compelling and thoroughly entertaining. I don't necessarily believe in ghosts, however, in my experience there are some things that are unexplainable to a mere mortals mind. The thought process of an inhuman being is hard to understand but was quite intriguing and led to some not so enjoyable situations. I would definitely recommend this to other readers.
This book is a fascinating mix of a little scifi with a lot of mystery and paranormal. There's a loving family enjoying the Christmas holidays when they are, unwillingly, pulled into investigating who or what is switching the manger baby Jesus with the animals in the manger scene. The story is written from Eric's point of view with a great sense of humor. But don't think this is a cozy mystery. There's a dangerous climax for our hero to over come.
I read A Mind Reader’s Christmas way back in 2016 or 2017 for the first time. I had forgotten many of the details and it’s just as entertaining today as it was then. There are humorous moments and deadly serious events blended with great characters and a well described world. I highly recommend it and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
A Mind Reader’s Christmas: An Eric Beckman Mystery was a fun read. The mind reader aspect was an interesting and effective hook to pull you into the story. The characters are lovable and downright funny. A coming of age story with a twist. I gave it five stars and would read another of the series.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The storyline kept me interested the entire time. I thought the characters were built up well and they became very personable. The book title did not seem very exciting and a little hooky but I was pleasantly surprised with the content! I am interested in exploring other books by this author!
Not my "regular cuppa tea", (not a murder mystery ;-) this book was a hidden gem of a surprise. Part of a series, which I did not realize, but it was a solid standalone. Really quirky, very fun characters, and an interesting storyline, a ghost story set in the future. It was my first holiday read this season, (2018) and I'm not disappointed.
I loved this book! In the beginning I was somewhat confused because I did not re-read the synopsis of the book before starting it (I download lots of books) and didn't know it took place in the future. Once I figured that out everything clicked. I enjoyed the story and the humor of the author. Nicely done and fun story.
A thoroughly enjoyable read. Eric Beckman, his wife Viviana and daughter Cosmina are vacationing in Newburn, Vermont for the month of December. Eric and his 10 year old daughter can read minds and while Eric helps his daughter learn to control her gift, Eric is also learning about ghosts. Enjoy this lighthearted story as they solve a ghost problem in the town.
I really enjoyed reading this book. The main character and his daughter were fun to be with with their abilities to read each others thoughts. I'm looking forward to reading another book with these characters. Loved the Vermont background and ghosts.
