Ram is considered the jewel of the Surya-vamsa, the most upright of all solar kings despite the fact that he belongs to a dynasty of legendary rulers. In Dilip, Raghu, Aja, and Dashratha, Ram has a host of role-models, but it is believed that he was the only king who combined and surpassed their individual strengths. The interesting thing about the Ramayana is that while it is the story of a husband out to rescue his wife from a demon-king, Ram is always considered the king of Ayodhya first. But what exactly were his qualities as a ruler? In The Rightful Ruler, Devdutt Pattanaik explores this very question through various aspects of the Ramayana to offer a glimpse into the world of the varna-dharma-following Ram. Effortlessly straightforward and unabashedly intriguing, this is Pattanaik at his best.
